12 undergraduate architecture students developped, fabricated, and assembled an architectural installation for TRex, a startup technology business incubator in downtown St. Louis. The installation explores how architecture affects human senses, as well as the effects generated by the architectural entity. Students researched ways to alter vision using reflection and use light as an environmental variable to generate the form of the installation.

I took Furniture Design while studying abroad in Copenhagen. Our studio studied the master’s of Scandinavian furniture design, including Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Alvaro Aalto, and Jørn Utzon, among many others. We were each given a blank shell and a metal base. I asked myself, How much of the plywood shell can I strip away with it still being a chair? Still comfortable, durable, and ergonomic? I was inspired by birds nests, street grids, stained glass, and spiderwebs.

The goal of this studio was to design and build a cycle inspired by the movements of an insect. I worked in a team with two other students, Cristina Clow and Kim Gagnon, where our original inspiration was from studies of centipedes. Through our multiple iterations, we let go of our original studies of the centipede, and ended up with Mantis, a 7 foot-tall upright reverse-recumbent tricycle with working brakes.

I was assigned to design a terrarium. As I was researching alternative growth methods, I was inspired by Japanese artist Koshi Kawachi to attempt to grow radishes in manga comics. I was intrigued by this process because it is an innovative way to plant while recycling and reusing old books.

The undulating curves that formed in the moist books inspired the form of the growing pods in my terrarium. Each row of pods was tilted so that water could travel down to the bottom, where there was a pump to lead the water back to the top. To form the curves in the terrarium, I CNC milled molds to thermoform the plexiglass strips. Prior to thermoforming them, I lasercut air holes for growth. I attached LED lights under each row to light the row below it.

Spring 2015Contemporary Art Museum, St. LouisProfessor: Lavender Tessmer and Jason Butz

I was brought in to work on the completion of this graduate design build installation, where I CNC milled and fabricated about a quarter of the project. Sheets of recyclable PETG plastic were laid on CNC milling machines, fabricating the modules efficiently with minimal waste.

The graduate architecture students in the studio were Jay Bassett, Qian Huang, Boxun Hu, Jeffrey Lee, Chun Liu, Alex Melvin, John Patangan, Joseph Vizurraga, Lingfeng Zhang, and Yue Zhang
