Ferragosto• Felice Ferragosto! Ferragosto is an Italian holiday traditionally celebrated
on August 15 of each year. As for the history of the holiday it may have originally been related to a mid-summer celebration representing the end of the hard labor season of harvesting in the fields. During the Roman Empire this time of year represented a time to honor the gods, in particular Diana, and the cycle of fertility and ripening. In fact, the present Italian name of the holiday is derived from its original Latin name “Feriae Agusti” or Festivals of the Emperor Agustus.
• Presently, Ferragosto is mainly a short holiday for brief vacations. The holiday also coincides with the peak activity of the Perseid meteor shower, which gives Italians a particular viewing advantage for this astronomical event. To most all Italians Ferragosto today means sun, beaches, family, vacation, fireworks, happiness and “gavettoni”. Gavettoni meaning bag or basket full of water – also know as water balloons! Be prepared, young people would line the streets in preparation for battle with each other and naturally to get soaked with water!
