CITY Challenge – LRT & Tramway role in the new cities

But transforming public mobility goes beyond simply procuring tracks and vehicles

City populations are swelling by more than one million every week. Car ownership is exploding. Pollution and congestion are spiralling out of control as the number of private vehicles races towards one billion*)

▌ City challenge

€110 billionestimated annual

cost of road congestion in Europe

488cities with more than one

million citizens in 2014. The UN expects this number

to rise to 662 by 2030

To build a sustainable future and secure a better quality of life for citizens, city authorities need to provide public transport that is cost effective, attractive and sustainable

▌ Role of City Authorities

LRT & Tramways are playing a critical part in addressing these needs. Quick, clean and green, LRT & Tramway signals a city’s commitment to embrace change. In many cases, LRT networks become part of the cultural identity of the cities they serve –symbols of civic pride

The role of LRT & Tramway network in modern cities

▌ As link to New Districts and Underground/Metro Circle

Typical Mission in a big cities like:

- New Taipei City Area- Songjiang – New District of Shanghai

▌ As Public Transport Backbone

Typical Mission for medium size cities like

- Gold Coast, - Florence, Palermo- Manchester

▌ As complementary transportation model

Applicable to all scenarios where the needs of combining metro/tramway/road is required

- Sydney, Milan, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Berlin,

▌ As green and easy to access transportation model to move people inside a new area

Inside University Campus, Industrial/Administrative area

- Doha, Amman, Velizy (Paris)

New Taipei City Master Plan for Tramway

Many cities are reintroducing LRT as an efficient way to…

• Commit to green and sustainable city

• Develop new areas and avoid urban sprawling

• Renew and revitalize the City Centre

Traffic Light Priority Management – Advanced Solution

Cost Efficient Solution to support high level of performance balancing Public Transport Priority and Private Traffic

▌ Advanced Traffic Light Priority Management

The Wayside Transmission Unit (WTU) receives the requests of traffic lights prioritization from the on-board system

The command towards the traffic lights controller will be send considering:

- the operational status of the Vehicle- Speed of the Vehicle or distance to the road

crossing- Direction of the Vehicle

The WTU is able to interface the Traffic Light Controller via dry contact, Serial or Ethernet Protocol (high flexibility). If necessary the WTU can receive the route request command also from OCC.

The Physical Marker consists of a RFID Passive tagOCC
