Good full, dark red. Deep, pure, brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice and leather, plus a hint of oak spices. Offers lovely aromatic lift but comes across as tightly wound, even youthfully imploded, today, showing less texture than the more open-knit Ambrogio.

Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate La Coste 2006

Page 4: Best Barolo & NebbioloWine

Brunate component: Medium red. Mocha, brown spices, tobacco and cocoa powder on the nose, with suggestions of superripeness. Sweet, lush and deep, with decadent flavors of plum, tobacco, brown spices and earth. Finishes long and sweet, with substantial broad, ripe tannins. From a barrel of pure Le Coste: Bright, deep red. Rather Burgundian aromas of mocha, smoke and earth, with good mineral lift

Rinaldi Francesco & Figli Barolo Brunate DOCG

2010The 2010 Barolo Le Brunate is the most dynamic and textured of these wines. Dark cherry, plum, smoke and violet notes flesh out in a firm, muscular Barolo endowed with tons of classic Brunate nuance. The flavors are intense, dark and bold. Balsamic overtones develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance and complexity

Rinaldi Francesco & Figli Barbera d’Alba

DOC 2013The colour is intense ruby red with purple reflections. Nose of red fruits and ethereal nuances that flow onto the palate. Medium-bodied. It is a lovely, easy drinking wine and suitable to drink with most meals. The suggested serving temperature is 16° – 18° C

Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Tre Tine 2010The 2010 Barolo Tre Tine is classic and austere to the core. Here, the blend of sites yields a massively tannic, old-school Barolo that is for the exceedingly patient. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, cedar and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. The 2010 is incredibly focused, with tons of Le Coste in its flavor profile, but above all else, in its structure

Brovia Barolo Ca Mia 2010 (Magnum)

Smoke, tar, earthiness and licorice add gorgeous dimensions of complexity in the 2010 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca’ Mia. Here, too, the flavors are remarkably bright and focused. The dark, brooding notes of Serralunga are very much present, but the 2010 impresses for its pure balance, harmony and class. Dried rose petals, spices, licorice and game add complexity on a huge finish supported by big, incisive tannins.

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2010

This was a treat Mascarello pulled from cask at the end of my tasting): Medium red. Knockout nose showcases tangy red fruits, minerals and porcini. Conveys an impression of superb concentration and dusty extract, with the tactile solidity of the best young 2010s already coming through in spades. A wine of great length and potential

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2004

Just as impressive as it was at the outset, the 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis remains fresh, vibrant and absolutely impeccable. Black cherries, plums, spices meld into mocha, menthol and leather as this plush, inviting Barolo shows off its alluring personality. As good as the 2004 is today, it truthfully still needs time to show all of its cards

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne

2006How many dinners start with a wine of the pedigree of Luciano Sandrone’s 2006 Barolo Le Vigne? Not too many. The 2006 was incredibly tight when we opened, but after a few hours of air it is striking. What a wine. The flavor profile and tannin structure are decidedly classic, but the expression of fruit and overall texture are those of the modern school
