Que représente pour vous le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe?Pour moi, le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est la plus grande course, la vraie consécration, le championnat du monde des courses plates.

Mon souvenir le plus lointain remonte à mon enfance lorsque des amis, l’écurie Duboscq, ont réalisé l’exploit unique d’être premier et second avec le frère et la sœur.

L’ambiance de ces deux jours est formidable et la clameur de la foule au départ de la grande course significative de l’émotion collective suscitée par l’événement.

Que représente pour vous le fait d’être propriétaire de chevaux de courses? Voir courir un cheval défendant vos couleurs est un plaisir unique en son genre, et ce n’est pas sans de vifs regrets que j’ai cessé de faire courir durant les douze années de ma présidence du PMU pour des raisons déontologiques.

Je suis très heureux de faire courir à nouveau depuis deux ans.

Y’a-t-il un avantage à avoir été Président du PMU pour l’exercice de vous nouvelles fonctions à la tête de France Galop?Bien sûr, c’est un grand avantage. Je connais bien maintenant le fonctionnement et les besoins du PMU, et ce que les Sociétés-Mères du galop et du trot peuvent attendre du PMU.

Quelles ont été les priorités lors de votre prise de fonctions?Il a d’abord été nécessaire d’organiser France Galop pour lui donner plus d’efficacité en tant que société de services pour les professionnels et les sociétés régionales.

Ainsi, le Directeur Général, Hubert Monzat, est-il désormais entouré de deux Adjoints : Christian Maigret pour la partie Administrative et financière et Henri Pouret pour la partie Courses.D’autre part, plusieurs Commissions ont été soit créées, soit rénovées : Le Conseil économique et social est chargé d’étudier la situation financière des professionnels des courses et de proposer des solutions pour l’améliorer.

La Commission des régions accueille désormais, aux côtés des représentants des Comités régionaux, les Présidents des principales sociétés régionales, afin de créer les conditions d’une coopération plus étroite entre la société-mère du galop et les courses régionales.

La Commission des propriétaires a pour but, en travaillant de pair avec le département Propriétaires de France Galop, de fidéliser les propriétaires faisant déjà courir et de susciter de nouvelles vocations.

Dans cet esprit une présence active dans des salons professionnels a commencé à être organisée pour faire découvrir les courses de chevaux à de futurs propriétaires.

Enfin, le Comité stratégique de l’Institution des courses, présidé par le Sénateur Ambroise Dupont, a été constitué en parfait accord avec Le Trot et les pouvoirs publics, afin de préparer le mieux possible l’avenir, principalement économique, de la filière course et de ses 76 000 emplois sur tout le territoire.

Où en est le dossier du Nouveau Longchamp?C’est un investissement important que l’on ne pouvait pas engager en l’absence d’une garantie de bail suffisamment longue. Nous avons conclu des négociations en cours depuis plusieurs années, par un accord avec la Mairie de Paris : un bail de cinquante ans, à compter de 2006, aussi bien pour Longchamp que pour Auteuil.

Un projet d’une telle ampleur a fait l’objet d’un appel d’offre entre cabinets d’architecture. Sept candidats se sont manifestés parmi lesquels la commission chargée de proposer un choix et présidée par Henri de Pracomtal, a retenu en 2011, le Cabinet de Dominique Perrault. Longchamp va être ainsi complétement rénové avec un projet adapté aux attentes du public.

Les travaux devraient débuter en 2014 et être d’une durée limitée conduisant à ne délocaliser qu’un seul Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, probablement à Chantilly, dont le

site a accueilli quelque 40.000 personnes pour le Prix de Diane Longines.

Le programme des trois ans suscite de nombreuses polémiquesTout le monde admet que le programme classique des pouliches fonctionne très bien. En revanche, celui des poulains fait l’objet de nombreuses critiques. Il faut donc le réexaminer afin de rechercher la meilleure adaptation pour valoriser au mieux la génération classique des poulains de 3 ans.

Dans une conjoncture économique très difficile, restez-vous optimiste pour les courses ?Nous sommes depuis quelques années et sans doute pour longtemps encore, dans une sérieuse crise mondiale, notamment européenne. Les courses connaissent presque partout de graves difficultés. La France hippique fait face. Tout permet d’espérer que ce sera le cas dans l’avenir. C’est ma conviction, car notre modèle est solide.

La famille Bélinguier et la passion des courses hippiques.Bertrand Bélinguier ne pouvait rêver plus belle élection que celle qui le porta à la présidence de France Galop, après avoir été Président du PMU pendant douze ans. Il se rapprochait ainsi plus encore de ce qui fut une passion familiale dès la fin du dix-neuvième siècle.

C’est son grand-père Jean qui déclara il y a cent vingt ans les couleurs jaune et violet qui allaient se transmettre de père en fils. Dans les années cinquante, elles connurent leur plus beau titre de gloire grâce à un certain Birum qui remporta le Grand Prix de Paris sur 3000 mètres, à une époque où les bons chevaux de grande tenue jouissaient d’une belle considération.

Incroyable coïncidence, André Bélinguier a été propriétaire d’Ad Altiora, cinquième mère de deux gagnantes de Prix de Diane Aquarelliste et Sarafina, mère d’Altissima, lauréate de la Poule d’Essai des Pouliches 1963.

Un véritable conte de fées pour sa propriétaire, qui l’avait gagnée dans un concours organisé par Paris-Jour, quotidien appartenant à Madame Cino del Duca, elle-même célèbre propriétaire. n

What does the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe represent for you?For me, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is the greatest race in the world and the Championship of flat racing.

My earliest memory of the race goes back to my childhood when friends of ours, the Duboscqs, achieved the unique feat of finishing first and second in the Arc with a brother and sister.

The atmosphere over these two days is incredible, and the build up of excitement amongst the crowd before the start of the big race is proof of the public’s love of the event.

What does it mean to you to be a racehorse owner? To see a horse run in your own silks is a truly unique pleasure, and it was not without a big regret that I decided to cease having horses of my own during the twelve years of my term as President of the PMU. I am delighted to be able to own racehorses once again which I have done so for the past two years.

Do you think that being President of the PMU has helped you in any way now that you are in charge of France Galop?Of course, it is a huge advantage. I now understand the function and needs of the PMU, and what the Racing Associations responsible for flat racing, jump racing and trotting expect from the PMU.

What were your first priorities when you took on the role of President of France Galop?Firstly it was important to organise France Galop in order to make it more effective as a service provider for both racing professionnals and the regional racing authorities.

Also, the Chief Executive, Hubert Monzat, is now aided by two Deputies: Christian Maigret, who takes care of the administrative and financial side, and Henri Pouret, who is responsible for racing.

Multiple Committees were also created or reorganised:

l The Economic and Social Council is responsible for studying the financial situations of racing professionals and to propose solutions to improve them.

l The Regional Committee now includes

the Presidents of the main regional Racing Associations along with the representatives of the regional committees, work to improve co-ordination between France Galop and regional racing.

l The goal of the Owners Committee is to work alongside France Galop’s Owners Department to recruit new owners and encourage those who already have horses in training. This is why we have organised an active presence at the racecourses to enable possible future owners to discover the pleasure of racehorse ownership.

l Finally, the Strategic Committee, presided by Senator Ambroise Dupont, has been created in partnership with Le Trot, the Trotting Society and the State, to prepare for the future as much as possible and to take care of the 76,000 employees in the sport.

What is the latest news on the new Longchamp?It is an important investment which we could not undertake without a lease of appropriate length. We concluded the negotiations, which had been on-going for several years, with an agreement with Paris City Council for a 50 year lease, starting from 2006, for both Longchamp and Auteuil.

Such a large project required an invitation to tender from architectural firms. Seven candidates put forward proposals and the Committee

responsible for this project, which was presided over by Henri de Pracomtal, choose Dominique Perrault’s firm in 2011. Longchamp will be completely renovated in a project adapted to meet the needs of the racing public.

The work will start in 2014 and the duration will be restricted so that only a single Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe will have to be run elsewhere, probably at Chantilly where the racecourse already accommodated around 40,000 people this year for the Prix de Diane Longines.

The programme for three-year-olds has created numerous debates. How will this be resolved? Everybody is in agreement that the fillies’ Classic programme works very well. However, the colts’ version has been criticised. We need to look at it again in order to find the best possible solution for the three-year-old colts’ Classic generation.

In the current difficult economic climate, are you still optimistic for the future of racing?For the past few years, and no doubt for the years to come, the world and especially Europe has been in a serious economic crisis. Racing is in difficulty almost everywhere. But French racing has stood up to this crisis and the signs give hope that this will continue to be the case in the future. I truly believe this, as our racing industry is solid.

THe Bélinguier family and their passion for racing:BERTRAND BéLINGUIER could not have dreamed of a better election than that of the Presidency of France Galop, having already presided over the PMU for twelve years. He is continuing a family passion that has existed since the 19th century.

His grandfather, Jean, chose his gold and purple racing silks 120 years ago and these silks have been passed down from father to son.

In the fifties they had their greatest moment of glory when they were carried to victory by Birum in the Grand Prix de Paris.

André Bélinguier owned Ad Altiora, the dam of the 1963 winner of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Altissima, and also the fifth dam of two Prix de Diane winners in Aquarelliste and Sarafina. A true fairytale for the owner of Altissima, who won the horse in a competition run by the daily newspaper, Paris-Jour. n

Q : L’association du Qatar avec le week-end du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est à la hauteur de ce que vous espériez ?R : Oui. C’est une fabuleuse association entre le Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club et France Galop, et cela continue de l’être. Nous sommes fiers d’associer notre pays à un évènement hippique si prestigieux et historique au monde. Cela permet au Qatar de laisser son empreinte dans l’histoire des grandes courses hippiques internationales. Q : Quels étaient vos principaux objectifs lors de la signature de ce partenariat ?R : Notre objectif principal était d’être associé à un des évènements majeurs du monde des courses.Le partenariat entre le Qatar et France Galop vient d’intérêts communs que sont l’amour et la passion des chevaux. Le Qatar a une longue et riche tradition des courses et nous sommes fiers d’avoir construit ce partenariat qui fait du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe le plus grand rendez-vous sportif du galop international. Q : La Qatar Arabian World Cup est une vitrine exceptionnelle pour les courses de pur-sangs arabes partout dans le monde. Pensez-vous que la course a atteint tous les objectifs que vous vous êtes fixé ?R : Oui, je suis ravi de dire que c’est le cas. La Qatar Arabian World Cup est un énorme succès. C’est le tremplin idéal pour promouvoir les courses de pur-sangs arabes du monde. Le fait que les chevaux Qataris aient gagné les trois dernières éditions de la Qatar Arabian World Cup nous a procuré énormément de fierté. Avoir cette course le même jour que l’Arc est très spécial pour nous au Qatar. Cela donne une nouvelle dimension à la Qatar Arabian World Cup. Des milliers de spectateurs internationaux regardent la course de Longchamp, ainsi que des millions de téléspectateurs partout dans le monde. Q : Il y a de plus en plus de réunions de pur-sangs arabes ainsi que de courses dans les programmes mixtes en Europe et dans le monde depuis la création de la Qatar Arabian World Cup. Est-ce dans votre intérêt ?R : Oui, cela nous a permis de présenter les courses de pur-sangs arabes à un nouveau public international. Maintenant les gens comprennent, respectent et apprécient ces courses à travers le monde. Durant les deux dernières années, des hippodromes parmi les plus prestigieux au monde ont accueilli des courses de pur-sangs arabes. Nos chevaux ont mis le Qatar sur la carte du monde. Bien évidemment, nous souhaiterions que le nombre de courses de pur-sangs arabes se multiplie en Europe et à travers le monde dans les années à venir, et il semble que nous soyons en bonne voie pour que cela se produise.

Q : Le succès du partenariat entre France Galop et le Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club a permis au Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe de gagner en notoriété. Pensez-vous que l’on puisse reconnaître que le Qatar soit un pays, et pas juste un pays appartenant au monde hippique ?R : Comme vous le savez, ces dernières années, le Qatar a été partenaire de beaucoup d’évènements sportifs en les accueillant à Doha. Dans le cas du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, nous avons pris la décision de sponsoriser un évènement à l’extérieur de notre pays. Cela nous a effectivement apporté une certaine couverture médiatique, faisant de la publicité non seulement pour notre passion des courses mais aussi pour le sport et pour notre pays.

Q : Vous possédez les meilleurs pur-sangs arabes au monde. Qu’est-ce qui vous fascine chez eux ? Avez-vous les mêmes sentiments pour le pur-sang anglais ?R : Le Qatar a pour tradition de produire de très bons pur-sangs arabes au meilleur niveau et ce depuis des années. Tout le monde adore le pur-sang arabe. Leur richesse culturelle et leur élevage ont toujours été spéciaux. Les pur-sangs anglais aussi sont spéciaux à leur façon... Nous les aimons tous les deux. Q : Ce n’est pas inhabituel que l’Arc soit gagné par des français, des anglais ou des irlandais, c’est pourquoi la victoire allemande de Danedream l’année passée a rendu la course encore plus internationale. Cette année le Japon a une chance de gagner pour la première fois, grâce à Orfèvre. Est-ce que cette participation internationale vous plaît ?R : L’ Arc est connu comme étant une des courses les plus célèbres au monde et il est donc tout à fait normal qu’il attire des concurrents internationaux. Le fait que des propriétaires de tous les pays soient prêt à engager leurs chevaux dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe indique

bien que tous les chevaux des pays étrangers sont capables de gagner. Peut-être un jour verrons-nous un cheval Qatari gagner le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Cela serait une grande satisfaction pour nous. Q : Le Qatar a acquis une réputation mondiale dans le sponsoring d’évènements sportifs. Voyez-vous le sport comme une façon de briser les frontières et de rapprocher les nations et leurs habitants ?R : Le sport est un superbe moyen de rapprocher des pays. D’après notre expérience à recevoir des évènements internationaux sur notre territoire, nous savons que le sport réunit les gens. Quand les athlètes pratiquent un sport, leurs fans les suivent car ils partagent avec eux l’amour et la passion de leur discipline. Le Qatar est une nation passionnée de sport et nous allons continuer à soutenir autant d’évènements sportifs que possible. Q : L’Arc est connu pour son ambiance, rassemblant les amateurs de courses des quatre coins du monde, le Qatar ressent-il qu’il fait désormais partie à part entière de cet évènement sportif ?R : Le Qatar fait dorénavant partie intégrante du meeting de l’Arc. Nous avons travaillé très dur pour que l’Arc ait la meilleure réussite possible. Je pense que nos efforts ont porté leurs fruits et nous sommes ravis d’avoir contribué à la réussite de cet évènement hippique si prestigieux. Q : En vous tournant vers l’avenir, que souhaitez-vous pour le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe et la Qatar Arabian World Cup ?R : Tout ce que je peux dire, c’est que je souhaite de tout mon cœur que ces deux courses deviennent encore plus importantes et grandioses à l’avenir. Je veux m’assurer que le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe et la Qatar Arabian World Cup continuent de s’améliorer année après année. n

Q: Has Qatar’s sponsorship of the Arc worked out as well as you hoped it would?A: Yes. It has been a great partnership between us and France Galop – and will continue to be so. We are very happy to be associated with one of the most prestigious and historic horseracing events in the world. It has put Qatar firmly on the world map as far as horseracing is concerned.

Q: What were your main objectives behind the sponsorship?A: Our main objective was to be associated with one of the biggest racing events in the world. The partnership between Qatar and France Galop stems from a shared interest: a love and a passion for horses. Qatar has a long and rich tradition of horseracing and it was totally appropriate for us to become involved with France Galop and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Our partnership has also enabled us to promote Purebred Arabian racing on the world stage.

Q: The Qatar Arabian World Cup has been a huge success in showcasing Arab racing worldwide. Has the race achieved all your objectives?A: Yes, I am pleased to say it definitely has. The Qatar Arabian World Cup has been a huge success. It provides the ideal platform to showcase Purebred Arabian horseracing to the world. With Qatar horses winning the last three Qatar Arabian World Cup races it has made us immensely proud. To have this race on the same day as the Arc is something special for us in Qatar. It brings a new dimension and importance to the Qatar Arabian World Cup. The race is watched by the many thousands of international visitors to Longchamp, as well as millions of television viewers worldwide.

Q: There are many more Arabian race meetings and races in mixed cards in europe and around the world since the inception of the Qatar Arabian World Cup – is this what you were aiming to achieve?A: Yes, it has helped us introduce Arabian horseracing to a new global audience. Now people understand, respect and enjoy Purebred Arabian horseracing across the world. Over the last two years some of the most prestigious racetracks in world racing have been welcoming Arabian races. Our horses have certainly put Qatar on the world map. Of course, we would like to see more Purebred Arabian races in Europe and worldwide in future years and the signs are positive that this is happening.

Q: The marriage between France Galop and the QReC has worked well and the Arc has grown in stature during Qatar’s sponsorship – do you feel that it has helped to put Qatar, as a country, on the map globally and not just in horseracing circles?A: As you know, Qatar has been supporting a great many global sports events in recent years. We have hosted numerous world-class sporting events in Doha. In the case of our involvement in the Arc we had decided to take our sponsorship to another country. Definitely, our sponsorship of the Arc has given us more exposure and promotion for Qatar, not only in horseracing terms but also as a sports-loving country.

Q: You have some of the world’s finest Arabian horses. What is it about the Arabian that fascinates horse lovers and horseracing followers – and do you have the same feelings for the ‘english’ Thoroughbred?A: Qatar has a rich tradition of producing top-class Arabian horses. It has been with us for many years now. Everybody loves Purebred Arabian horses. The rich culture and breeding of Arabian horses is always special. Thoroughbreds, too, are special in their way. We love them both.

Q: It’s not unusual for the Arc to have French, British and Irish winners and Danedream’s victory last year for Germany has made the race even more international and with Orfèvre in with a chance of winning for Japan for the first time in the history of the race it could become even more famous. Do you welcome international competition?A: With the Arc traditionally being one of the world’s most famous races it naturally attracts international competition. It’s a good sign that horses from different countries are capable of winning the Arc and that their owners are eager to compete. It is a truly global event and we encourage more and more competition from various countries. Who knows, some day we might see a horse from Qatar winning the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Now that would be something special for us.

Q: Qatar has earned itself a worldwide reputation as a world-class supporter of sporting events – do you see sport as a means of breaking down barriers between countries and bringing people and nations closer together?A: Sport is a great vehicle to bring nations together. From our experience in hosting world-class events in Qatar we know that sport really does unite people. When people play sport and fans follow it, there is lot of love and passion involved. Qatar is a great sport-loving nation and we will continue to back sports wherever and whenever we can.

Q: The Arc is famous for its atmosphere, where horseracing fans from all over the world come for the racing and the occasion – does Qatar feel that they are now a part of this great sporting occasion?A: Qatar is definitely an integral part of the Arc Meeting. A lot of hard work has been put into the Arc from our end to make it as successful as it can be. Le Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club

Fondé en 1975 à Al Rayyan Park, le Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club est présidé depuis juin 2010 par Son Excellence Sheikh Mohammed Bin Faleh Al Thani. Monsieur Sami Al Boenain assure quant à lui le poste de Directeur Général. L’hippodrome de Al Rayyan se situe à environ 7 km au nord du centre-ville de Doha. Les courses furent établies par décret en 1975. Dès lors, elles se sont courues sur cet hippodrome qui a connu et connaît encore de nombreuses

transformations. Le QREC a pour mission de développer les courses de pur-sang arabes et anglais. Il organise également des concours de modèles et allures pour chevaux pur sang arabes.

THE Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) was founded in 1975 at Al Rayyan Park. His Excellency Sheikh Mohamed Bin Faleh Al Thani has been Chairman of the QREC since June 2010, while the

Managing Director is Sami Jassim Al Boenain. The Al Rayyan racecourse lies about 7 km north of Doha town centre.

Racing officially started in 1975. Since then, races have been held at the racecourse, which has seen significant changes. Further improvements are still taking place. The role of the QREC is to develop Purebred Arabian and Thoroughbred races in Qatar. It also organises horse shows for Arabian horses.

Calendrier des Courses au QatarLa saison 2012/2013 promet d’être encore plus excitante et prestigieuse que les années précédentes avec un total de 60 réunions qui auront lieu du 18 Octobre 2012 au 9 Mai 2013.

La piste en gazon accueillera 36 réunions alors que la piste en sable en aura 24.

Les courses de pur-sang arabes et anglais ouvertes aux chevaux venant de l’étranger seront dotées d’allocations plus élevées que dans le passé.

Le Haras NationalUn grand projet va voir le jour au Qatar au début de l’année 2015. En effet, le Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club construit actuellement un haras national, premier projet de ce genre dans l’état du Qatar.

Situé à Zubara, à environ 65 km de Doha sur la route du Nord, ce haras national permettra à tous les propriétaires locaux d’élever leurs chevaux sur place dans de bonnes conditions. Ce haras National offrira toutes les facilités pour l’insémination, le poulinage, le sevrage, le débourrage.

Fixtures in QatarThe 2012/2013 season in Qatar promises to be even more exciting and prestigious than in previous years. There are 60 race days scheduled between October 18th 2012 and May 9th 2013.

Breeding FarmThe Horse Breeding Farm Project in Zubara is the first national project of its kind in the State of Qatar. It is one of the largest, if not the largest, specialised projects in the Middle East.

Areej domine le trio des élèves d’Al Shahania et les sept représentants du Qatar

La “crème” des chevaux pur-sang arabes était à Longchamp, 16 au total, tous  prêts  à courir. Il y avait deux

favoris :  le cheval d’Umm Qarn  Farm, AL TAIR, invaincu lors de ses  dernières  courses (dont la Qatar Cup Gr1 à Longchamp et la Doha Cup Gr1 à Deauville) et la championne RAQIYAH, également lauréat de Gr1 dans la Doha Cup à Longchamp (terminant ex aequo avec AL TAIR). Avant cette sortie victorieuse, RAQIYAH avait remporté  la President of the UAE Cup, Gr1, à Saint Cloud. Mais finalement c’est AREEJ qui a suivi les traces de GENERAL et qui a triomphé dans la  Qatar Petroleum Arabian World Cup. Troisième victoire consécutive pour le Qatar. 

AZIZ a fini très fort et a pris la deuxième place devant le formidable JAAFER, troisième pour Al Shahania Stud, prenant ainsi les trois premières places de ce Groupe 1.

Avec sa victoire dans la dernière course du week-end de la French Arabian Breeders’ Cup, pour son propriétaire, S.A. Cheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani, AREEJ a prouvé qu’elle avait la classe d’une championne.

Le Qatar a placé sept de ses représentants aux sept premières places sur seize. L’enthousiasme et la participation de S.A. Cheikh Mohammed a permis à Al Shahania de se hisser au plus haut rang mondial des chevaux arabes de courses et de show. Beaucoup d’experts prévoyaient la

victoire de la star de l’écurie, JAAFER, lauréat de plusieurs Gr1, mais ce fut un autre pensionnaire de Julien Smart, qui lui a volé la vedette : la pouliche AREEJ.

Son compagnon de boxe, ASRAA MIN ALBARQ, a animé l’épreuve et a presque semblé être au dessus du lot. Mais le jockey Neil Callan, en selle sur AREEJ, a su monter une superbe course pour venir arracher la victoire. Il a attendu pendant les premiers 1.500 mètres, et lui a demandé un effort dès qu’il a pu profiter d’une ouverture dans la ligne droite.

Celle-ci a alors accéléré nettement jusqu’au poteau. Peut être qu’ AZIZ et JAFEER ont été surpris par cette tactique car AREEJ avait déjà pris le contrôle de la course avant même qu’ils ne s’en soient rendus compte. Dans le dernier tournant, AL TAIR a eu un souci de bride et son jockey David Bouland a eu du mal a le contrôler. Quand il a réussi à le lancer, c’était trop tard: Neil Callan avait déjà franchi la ligne d’arrivée...

Les chevaux d’Umm Qarn, AL TAIR et RAQIYAH, ont terminé quatrième et cinquième suivis par RAIHAN et ASRAA MIN ALBARQ pour compléter le ‘Coup de Sept’ des chevaux Qataris. Son entraîneur, Julien Smart, était ravi du résultat : “C’est fantastique de remporter la Qatar Arabian World Cup, nous avons atteint notre objectif. C’est un accomplissement d’avoir les trois premières places, et remarquable pour le Qatar, d’occuper les sept premières.

“Que peut-on demander de plus ? Au cours du peu de temps que j’ai passé au Qatar, avoir gagné le Kahayla Classic à Dubai, l’Emir’s Sword au Qatar et maintenant cette course, est tout simplement incroyable. Je n’aurai pas pu le faire tout seul – c’est le travail d’une équipe et je veux les remercier tous.”

“Cela aurait été un accomplissement pour JAAFER de gagner après ses victoires dans le Kahayla et l’Emir’s Sword. Mais AREEJ était vraiment géniale aujourd’hui. C’est une super jument qui a beaucoup progressé au cours de l’été en Angleterre,” a-t-il a ajouté.

C’était une première victoire à Longchamp pour le jockey Neil Callan qui nous a déclaré: “Cette pouliche est fantastique. Gagner une course de ce niveau et de cette façon est superbe. Cela ne me dérangeait pas d’attendre avec elle et je pense même que c’était la clé de la victoire. Je lui ai laissé le temps de s’équilibrer et c’est elle qui m’a dit quand elle était prête à accélérer. Lorsque je lui ai demandé

de fournir un effort, elle a bien réagi et a gagné facilement. C’est une grande réussite contre des rivaux comme aujourd’hui.” Si la pouliche courait au Qatar, Callan tiendrait à faire le voyage à Doha, se serait pour lui une première monte là-bas.

L’édition 2011 de la Qatar Arabian World Cup fut la preuve de la force et de la richesse de l’élevage des pur-sang arabes au Qatar. Réussir à produire les sept premiers de la course mythique est une vraie publicité pour les haras Qataris.

La victoire de LAHIB pour Abu Dhabi dans la première édition de la Qatar Arabian World Cup en 2008, suivi par deux succès consécutifs de GENERAL pour S.A. le Cheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani, entrainé par le français Alban de Mieulle, et la victoire d’AREEJ pour Al Shahania, promet une édition très intéressante de la Qatar Arabian World Cup 2012.

Bien sûr, Alban de Mieulle était déçu de ne pas avoir gagné cette année, mais ses chevaux ont connu beaucoup de problèmes avant et pendant la course. Cependant, le propriétaire d’Umm Qarn, S.A. le Cheikh Abdullah était si fier de voir que les sept premiers étaient des fils et filles de son étalon Amer, qu’il était aussi heureux que son frère S. THE crème de la crème of Arabian racehorses were at Long-champ on Qatar Arc Day with 16 runners competing for the Qatar Arabian World Cup sponsored by Qatar Petroleum. The favourites were Umm Qarn Farm’s AL TAIR, unbeaten in his last

seven races, including the Group 1 Qatar Cup at Longchamp and the Group 1 Doha Cup at Deauville, and RAQIYAH, who dead-heated with AL TAIR in the Qatar Cup and won the Group 1 President of the UAE Cup at Saint Cloud.

But it was AREEJ who followed in the famous footsteps of GENERAL to take the Qatar Arabian World Cup for Qatar for the third successive year in impressive style. AZIZ came a fast-finishing second with the all-conque-ring JAAFER a determined third as Al Shahania Stud claimed the first three home in the Group 1 Purebred Arabians showpiece which followed the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

With AREEJ winning the final race of the Qatar Arabian Racing series for owner H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani his filly proved to be the star performer in a high-quality 2,000 metres race that saw Qatar fill the first seven places. Sheikh Mohammed’s enthusiasm and involvement has taken Al Shahania Stud to new heights at the top of the world in Pure-bred Arabian racing and showing. Many experts were anticipating another outstanding victory by the stable’s star, JAAFER, who has won so many of the big prizes in Arabian racing, but it was another Al Shahania filly, AREEJ, trained by Julien Smart, who stole the show.

Al Shahania’s stablemate ASRAA MIN ALBARQ was at the head of the pack and looking full of running. But AREEJ’s jockey Neil Callan rode the perfect race to grab the glory. He was content to keep AREEJ covered up in midfield throughout the first 1,500 metres but when a gap appeared down the straight he produced a blistering burst of speed from AREEJ and went flat out for the line. Maybe AZIZ and JAFEER were taken by surprise but by the time they had realised the danger, AREEJ had already taken control. In the last turn AL TAIR had a problem with his bridle and when his jockey David Bouland made his challenge it was too late.

Umm Qarn’s AL TAIR and RAQIYAH were fourth and fifth followed by RAIHAN and ASRAA MIN ALBARQ completing the first ‘Magnificent Seven’ of Qatari horses. This was the fourth successive year that Qatar Petroleum had sponsored the race, with increased prize-money of €500,000 and €250,000 going to the winner.

AREEJ had benefitted from his UK campaign this season and was clearly

a tougher and more experienced prospect. Trainer Julien Smart was de-lighted with the result. “It’s fantastic to win the Qatar Arabian World Cup,” he said. “We have accomplished our goal. To have the first three past the post is quite an achievement and for Qatar to fill the first seven places is remarkable. What more can one ask for. In the short span of time that I have spent in Qatar, winning the Kahayla Classic in Dubai, H.H. The Emir’s Sword in Qatar and now this victory, is simply amazing. I could not have done this by myself – it was all down to teamwork and I thank the entire team for this accomplishment.

“It would have been a major achievement for JAAFER to win it after his vic-tories in the Kahayla and H.H. The Emir’s Sword earlier. But AREEJ was simply brilliant today. She is a wonderful filly who has improved vastly through the summer in the UK,” he added.

‘FANTASTIC FILLY ’Jockey Neil Callan, celebrating his first winner at Longchamp, commented:

“She’s a fantastic filly. To win in a race of this stature and in this fashion was simply superb. I was happy to bide my time and it was probably the key to this win. I let the filly find her feet and she told me when she was ready to go. Just down the hill she started to come back off the bridle, and I had to restrain her. But when I let her go, she responded well and went away to win well. It’s a great achievement to beat such a strong field as this.” If given the chance to ride in Qatar, Callan said he was keen to make his maiden trip to Doha.

The 2011 Qatar Arabian World Cup was a wonderful testament to the strength and depth of Qatar’s Purebred Arabians and producing the first seven home was a valuable advertisement for Qatar’s magnificent studs.

LAHIB’s victory for Abu Dhabi in the inaugural Qatar Arabian World Cup in 2008, which was followed by back-to-back victories by Umm Qarn Farm’s GENERAL, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, trained by Frenchman Alban de Mieulle, who has been based in Qatar for a num-ber of years, and now the success of Al Shahania’s AREEJ, sets the scene for a fascinating 2012 Qatar Arabian World Cup.

Alban de Mieulle was disappointed at the misfortune of the Umm Qarn Farm runners but owner H.H. Sheikh Abdullah was proud that the first seven horses past the post were sons and daughters of his stallion AMER and that his brother, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed, had the winner, AREEJ, from his Al Shahania Stud. n

Qatar Arabian World Cup breeds global success

SIX years ago, when the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club delegates came to France Galop to talk about the

possibility of Qatar sponsoring the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe it was on the basis that Longchamp racecourse would welcome a new race for Purebred Arabian horses, the Qatar Arabian World Cup.

In the first year it was held on the Saturday, the day before the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. It proved to be a positive experience in every respect – in the quality of the race, the volume of betting, and the interest of the spectators.

The Qatar Arabian World Cup met all the criteria to justify a move to Qatar Arc Day on the Sunday. It was a coup for the QREC and for France Galop – and for Purebred Arabian racing worldwide.

Due to the success of the race the Purebred Arabian had captured the imagination of racegoers everywhere and created a new global following.

Whether any country other than France would have embraced Arabian racing in such a wholehearted way is debatable. Since then Arabian races have been included in the yearly French racing programme, along with races for English Thoroughbred horses, the AQPS ( Other than Pure Bred), and the Anglo Arabs (a cross

between Arabian and English Thoroughbred horses).

Those races support betting on PMH (on site) and/or PMU (national) depending on the racecourses, and are included in the racecards for the day’s racing.

Compare that to the UK, where Arabian races are held but are not included in the racecards as a race supporting betting, and are not mentioned in the racing press or on televised race meetings.

was not only a coup for the event itself, the race revolutionised the Arabian breeding and racing industry, not only in Europe but all around the world.

As betting interest increased and Arabian horses became more and more popular with the racing public and the media, the QREC decided to provide another boost.

They increased the prizemoney and started to sponsor more and more races for Arabian horses with a full day of races at Saint Cloud on the Thursday before the Arc, and with Group 1 races for Arabian horses at Chantilly in June and at Deauville in August.

Other Qatari sponsors began creating new races, among them the “4 year old Arabian

Derby” at Chantilly, sponsored by Al Shahania Stud the day of Prix de Diane, the French Oaks.

Following the QREC initiative, other countries such as Abu Dhabi, Dubaï, Bahrain and Oman also increased their support of Arabian races in France, in the UK and all around the world.

It’s no surprise that over the last two years some of the most prestigious tracks in world racing – Ascot, Newmarket, Newbury, Epsom, The Curragh, Hoppegarten and Baden Baden among them – are welcoming Arabian races.

Through Qatar’s continued patronage in promoting Arabian racing they have brought an understanding of the beauty and the quality of the Arabian horse to a worldwide audience.

Without showcasing Arabian racing through the Qatar Arabian World Cup, the interest shown by the racing public and the media would have been negligible.

Today the Arabian breeding and racing industry is booming, instead of declining, courtesy of the QREC, under the visionary approach of HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, special advisor of H.H. QATAR PRIX FOY : ORFèVRe (Groupe 2, quatre ans et plus)Il faut remonter à l’an 2000 pour trouver un gagnant de Qatar Prix Foy remportant l’Arc par la suite. Il s’agissait du grand champion Montjeu. D’autres lauréats ont très bien couru sans gagner, comme Sarafina l’an passé ou Pride.

Ce dimanche, on n’avait d’yeux que pour le Japonais mystérieux Orfèvre, monté pour la première fois en course par Christophe Soumillon qui sera son partenaire dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

On allait voir si Christophe Soumillon allait dompté ce « quatre ans » imprévisible qui s’était carrément ralenti de sa propre initiative à cinq cents mètres du but de son antépénultième sortie, avant de revenir incroyablement finir à une tête du gagnant, mais qui avait ensuite couru obscurément avant de revenir gagner enfin de nouveau un Groupe 1.

Il fallait aussi voir si Orfèvre avait la valeur d’un cheval d’Arc. En dépit de sa décevante sortie suivant l’invraisemblable place de second après quasiment un arrêt buffet à cinq cents mètres du but, il venait de se réhabiliter dans un groupe I disputé sur 2200 mètres.

Certes, Christophe avait fait travailler le poulain à Chantilly, et disait n’avoir aucun doute sur sa valeur ni sur sa maniabilité. S’il en subsistaient quelques uns avant le Qatar Prix Foy, la course les dissipa. L’entraîneur

Yasutoshi Ikee avait engagé un leader, le « huit

ans » Aventino, confié à Anthony Crastus, pour s’assurer que la course serait bien un 2400 mètres. A la sortie des stalles, Orfèvre a tiré pendant une cinquantaine de mètres, mais Soumillon l’a vite installé dans son train en position d’attente.

Malheureusement, le cheval de train n’a pas fait le train et la course est allée ainsi jusqu’à l’entrée de la ligne d’arrivée. Là, à cinq cents mètres du poteau, Orfèvre était encore dernier et Soumillon lui demanda alors de faire son effort à la corde.

Le poulain en fit juste assez pour gagner d’une longueur devant Méandre, monté par

jaune toque bleue de la famille Rothschild bon finisseur en dépit d’un manque de train lui convenant mal. Joshua Tree, monté par Dettori qui lui avait fait gagner un Groupe 2 à Deauville, a été facilement dominé par Méandre et a dû se contenter de la troisième place.

Tant à regarder les courses qu’à écouter les déclarations d’entraîneurs et de jockeys, il faut bien admettre que les trois lauréats avaient tous largement besoin de cette course de rentrée ou semi-rentrée. Dans le Prix Foy, Orfèvre devait se montrer obéissant à un crack-jockey, ce qui se réalisa de manière très convaincante. Dans le Prix Niel, saonois avait évidemment besoin de prouver que son succès dans le Prix du Jockey-Club n’était pas une imposture, et dans le Qatar Prix Vermeille, aussi bien but en soi que préparatoire, shareta devait se montrer bien remise de son raid victorieux dans les Yorkshire Oaks cet été.

Méandre est le dernier «  grand  » élevé à Meautry. Fils de Slickly (champion de l’élevage Lagardère) et de Penne, il est né début avril 2008, période

idéale pour un foal qui bénéficiera tout jeune des effluves printaniers sans pâtir vraiment de la différence de développement avec ceux nés plus tôt.

Il faut bien avouer que le beau bai de la famille Rothschild, entraîné par André Fabre ne s’est guère illustré à deux ans. Quatre sorties, deux places en tout et pour tout, dont une (quatrième) perdue sur le tapis vert pour avoir gêné.

Dès sa rentrée à trois ans, il y a du mieux  : il se classe second d’une course F à Longchamp. Dès lors, il va aller de progrès en progrès, remportant avec sûreté son premier

succès le 27 avril dans une course B à Maisons-Laffitte. Mais rien ne permet encore de se rendre compte de sa qualité réelle quand il se présente fin mai au départ des 2400 mètres d’une «  listed  » réputée, le Prix de l’Avre. Ce jour-là, sa fin de course est si impressionnante, que bien des turfistes bons observateurs se promettent de le jouer contre Reliable Man, favori du prochain Grand Prix de Paris. Et ils ont raison. A quatre cents mètres de l’arrivée, il attend encore mais on le sent prêt à enclencher la vitesse maximale pour dépasser Reliable Man, lauréat du Jockey Club sans difficulté.

A l’automne, le Qatar Prix Niel va inverser les rôles et le classement. Reliable Man prend sa revanche facilement. Tous deux participeront à l’Arc dans lequel Méandre prendra une honorable sixième place.

C’est donc titulaire d’un seul succès en groupe I que Méandre aborde sa campagne de quatre ans. Comme à trois ans, il semble devoir attendre l’été, car s’il se comporte bien à Newmarket pour sa rentrée, il ne se classe tout de même que quatrième d’un groupe II. En revanche, on retrouve sa majesté Méandre dans le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud où il montre même un certain panache, analogue à celui du Grand Prix de Paris un an plus tôt.

Son troisième groupe I est obtenu en Allemagne le 22 juillet. Il remporte sur la piste corde à droite de Hoppegarten le Grand Prix de Berlin. Non seulement champion, mais bon voyageur aussi ce Méandre !

Il était attendu au coin du bois (de Boulogne à Longchamp) à l’occasion du Qatar Prix Foy, préparatoire à l’Arc. Rentrée tout à fait satisfaisante à défaut d’être brillante, on ne peut lui en vouloir d’être second d’un cheval de la réputation d’Orfèvre, dans une course menée à un train de sénateur ne lui convenant en rien.

Méandre gagne le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud dans un bon style.

Une seconde place prometteuse pour Méandre derrière Orfèvre dans le Qatar Prix Foy.

Hamelin a obtenu de son partenaire au pavillon fut décisive en quelques foulées. La course fut menée par le poulain « Aga Khan » Kesampour, jusqu’à mi ligne droite, tandis que son compagnon d’écurie Bayrir, lauréat cet été de Groupe 1 aux Etats Unis, fermait la marche.

Cette fois encore, le train était insuffisant en dépit du bon terrain. A quelque deux cents mètres de l’arrivée, tous les concurrents formaient un petit peloton assez compact d’où émergea soudainement Saonois qui se mit hors d’atteinte en quelques foulées.

Le gagnant est entraîné à Lyon par le très réputé Jean-Pierre Gauvin. Son jeune jockey Antoine Hamelin est bien moins connu, mais s’il continue à monter comme il l’a fait là et dans le Prix du Jockey-Club, il va vite acquérir de la notoriété.

QATAR PRIX VeRMeIlle : ShAReTA (Femelles de trois ans et plus)Il y avait plusieurs gagnantes potentielles dans cette épreuve ouverte à toutes les génération sde femelles de trois ans au moins, mais la pouliche de l’Aga Khan Shareta n’a laissé aucune chance à ses douze adversaires.

L’écurie Wertheimer ne comptait pas moins de trois partantes dans ce groupe 1, et c’est l’une d’elle, Sydara, entraînée par Freddy Head, qui mena au départ. Les « quatre ans » Shareta, Solemia et Galikova étaient toutes bien placées, mais seule Shareta a pris une nette avance sitôt entrée dans la ligne d’arrivée. En

quelques foulées, les autres protagonistes comprirent alors qu’il leur faudrait lutter pour les places seulement .Une seule « trois ans » fut vaguement dangereuse, Yellow and Green.

Notez que l’an passé Shareta, alors âgée de trois ans, était chargée de faire le train pour la « quatre ans » Sarafina, et avait courageusement pris la seconde place derrière l’inapprochable Danedream. L’entraîneur Alain de Royer-Dupré, désormais titulaire d’un record de sept succès

dans le Qatar Prix Vermeille, a souligné que la pouliche a besoin de courses sélectives pour se distinguer.

Il a dit que le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe pour elle se jouera beaucoup face à la météo. Shareta a déjà gagné en terrain très souple, mais est bien meilleure en bon terrain

Malgré un nombre de partants insuffisant dans le Niel et le Foy, les « préparatoires » ont été raisonnablement instructives. n

QATAR PRIX FOY: ORFèVRe (Gp 2, 4-year-old plus colts, fillies and mares)All eyes were on Christophe Soumillon and the Japanese mystery horse, Orfèvre. Firstly, to find out whether Soumillon had taken control of the unpredictable 4-year-old, who, in a recent race in Japan, ran off a right hand bend three-quarters of the way through the race and virtually pulled up, letting the entire field go sailing past, before setting off again and finishing a close second with an astonishing burst of speed.

Secondly, was to see whether Orfèvre had the class to compete in Arc company. Despite winning the 2011 Triple Crown in Japan, and seven of his 12 races, his recent form has been inconsistent, finishing nowhere in the race following his bizarre second place ‘last-to-nearly-first’ performance and then winning a Grade 1 race at 1m 3f.

Soumillon has been working steadily with Orfèvre on the Chantilly gallops and has been complimentary about the colt’s quality and undoubted ability. If there were any doubts before the Qatar Prix Foy they were quickly dispelled.

Orfèvre’s trainer, Yasutoshi Ikee, had put a pacemaker into the race to make sure that it was a truly run mile-and-a-half but the 8-year-old Aventino, ridden by Anthony Crastus, took them along at such a sedate pace it was little help to any of the runners.

From the stalls they went Indian file down the straight with Soumillon content to bring up the rear with Orfèvre. The Japanese star was pulling for his head early on but Soumillon soon had him settled and running to a comfortable rhythm. When they came off the bend, down

the home straight Orfèvre was still last of the five runners but when Soumillon asked him to quicken he responded immediately and did just enough to win easily.

The Andre Fabré-trained Méandre, in the famous yellow colours of the Rothschild Family, was always well placed but although Maxine Guyon produced a late run from the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud winner it was not enough to threaten Orfevre.

Joshua Tree, ridden by Frankie Dettori, winner of a Group 2 race at Deauville in August,

was easily overtaken by Méandre and had to settle for third place.

In such a slowly-run race it’s difficult to make predictions but it has to be said that the Orfèvre-Soumillon alliance proved that they could be a combination to be reckoned with in the Qatar Arc.

For Méandre, it could be argued that he was also in need of the race and that the pace was much slower than suits him best, so he certainly should not be ruled out of running a good race on October 7.

It’s true to say that for one reason or another, the three winners of the 2012 Arc Trials needed the race. In the Qatar Prix Foy Orfèvre had to show that his new jockey, Christophe Soumillon, had stamped his authority on Japan’s Arc hopeful – which he did in the style of a champion horseman; in the Qatar Prix Niel, Saonois, needed the race, and proved conclusively that his victory in the French Derby was no flash in the pan. His late, blistering turn of foot made him a comfortable winner and a genuine Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe contender; in the Qatar Prix Vermeille Shareta, showed that she had recovered from her summer campaign to deliver an unspectacular but never-the-less convincing two lengths victory.

QATAR PRIX NIel: SAONOIS (Gp 2, 3-year-old colts and fillies):Saonois was, perhaps, the most impressive winner in the three Arc Trials races. The breathtaking burst of speed Antoine Hamelin produced from the colt in the closing stages decided the issue in the space of a few strides.

The Aga Khan’s Kesampour made virtually all the running with the Aga’s other runner, Bayrir, which won a Group 1 race in the United States over 1m 2f in August, bringing up the rear. Again, the pace was slower than required, despite the good ground, and when the finishing post loomed, all six runners were almost in a line abreast. Khalid Abdullah’s Last Train looked threatening but the André Fabre-trained colt, son of Arc winner Rail Link, made little impression.

Four winners of the Prix Niel since 2000 have gone on to win the Arc so this may well be an opportunity for Saonois to make it five.

The J.P. Gauvin-trained Saonois, owned by baker, M.Pascal Treyve, took the initiative and went for home on the rail with a turn of foot that left the rest of the field floundering, to win by a length. It’s that sort of finish that wins Arcs and he may be the dark horse of the race.

QATAR PRIX VeRMeIlle: ShAReTA (GP 1, 3-year-old plus, fillies and mares):The only Group 1 of the three Arc Trials races, the 13-runner field was full of potential winners but it was the Aga Khan’s 4-year-old filly Shareta who won convincingly.

The Freddy Head-trained Sydarra, one of three runners in the race owned by the Wertheimer Brothers, set the early pace. Shareta,

Solemia and Galikova were all handily placed throughout but as the winning post beckoned, Christophe Lemaire decided to make his move early.

Within a few strides Shareta had left the chasing pack challenging for the minor places as she eased to an emphatic two lengths victory with Pirika second and Solemia third.

Shareta’s first Group 1 win came with her hard-fought victory in the hotly-contested Yorkshire Oaks in August and although she was cast in the role of pacemaker in last year’s Qatar Arc she finished a very credible second to runaway winner Danedream. Trainer Alain

de Royer-Dupré, who could boast six winners of the Vermeille – and now seven – reckoned Shareta needed a good, competitive race to set her up for another tilt at the Arc and Shareta has certainly done no wrong this year. She invariably runs a good race and her victory in the Vermeille could lead to glory in the Qatar Arc. The Aga Khan’s Zarkava won the 2008 Vermeille en route to Arc victory. Maybe Shareta will follow in her footsteps.

The Arc Trials often produce more questions than answers but this time they have provided some positive clues to the outcome of the 2012 Qatar Arc. n

Même si les statistiques sont contre le fait que Danedream reproduira la même performance que l’année dernière, c’est à dire

gagner un deuxième Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, tout le monde souhaite un tel honneur pour cette pouliche courageuse.

Alleged est le dernier cheval a avoir gagné la plus grande course d’Europe deux fois consécutivement en 1977 et 1978 et depuis 18 ans, seulement trois chevaux d’âge se sont illustrés. Cette pouliche, à l’allure d’une Cendrillon allemande, pourrait bien offrir encore une fois une immense fête à son entourage.

Il y a eu peu de surprises dans l’histoire de cette course phare, jusqu’à ce que le vendeur de meubles Heiko Volz gagne « l’Arc » il y a douze mois avec Danedream, qui a battu ses rivaux de haut niveau ainsi que le record de la piste.

Volz, qui a acheté Danedream seulement 9000€ aux ventes Breeze Up à Baden Baden, avait déjà enregistré une victoire prestigieuse avec Tryphosa dans les 1000 Guinées Allemandes en 1975.

Il n’était pas dans la même catégorie que des propriétaires comme Godolphin, Coolmore ou les familles Niarchos et Wildenstein jusqu’à ce qu’il revienne au rond des gagnants après cette course.

Danedream a pris son temps avant d’impressionner l’Europe entière. Elle a gagné seulement une fois à 2 ans, dans un maiden à Wissembourg dans l’est de la France. Son entourage a pris confiance pour l’avenir après sa sixième place dans le Prix Marcel Boussac a

Longchamp et sa victoire facile dans les Oaks Italiennes l’été d’après. C’était son premier pas vers le plus haut niveau.

Deux victoires au niveau Groupe 1 en Allemagne ont convaincu son entourage de débourser les 100.000€ pour la supplémenter dans l’Arc l’an passé. Ce qui lui a permis de réaliser l’exploit non seulement d’égaler les cinq longueurs gagnantes de Helissio ou encore de Peintre Celebre, mais aussi de pulvériser le record de la course.

L’un des plus grands propriétaires et éleveurs japonais, Terry Yoshida, a été tellement impressionné, après sa démonstration dans l’Arc, qu’il a acheté la moitié de la pouliche. Elle a depuis prouvé qu’elle était capable de répéter avec sa courageuse victoire dans les King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes à Ascot en juillet.

Il est possible que, déjà dans son agenda 2013, le croisement soit prévu avec Harbinger, Deep Impact ou encore Workforce, trois étalons qui font la monte dans le haras de Yoshida, le Shadai Farm. Il faut féliciter l’entourage de Danedream de l’avoir gardée à l’entrainement à quatre ans, leur décision a déjà été récompensée et le potentiel est là pour faire encore mieux dans l’avenir.

La pouliche n’avait pas le profil du bon investissement après sa sortie dans le Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, ou elle finissait dernière, loin derrière Méandre en juin, mais sa belle victoire après une superbe fin de course devant Nathaniel dans le King George un mois plus tard a levé les doutes qui planaient, et ses propriétaires ont maintenant hâte de défendre leur titre dans l’Arc. Andrasch Starke, qui monte

à merveille Danedream, n’a aucun doute sur le fait que la pouliche soit à son meilleur niveau, et il ajoute : « Gagner l’Arc et les King George ont été les meilleurs moments de ma carrière, mais quand on a atteint un objectif, on veut toujours aller plus loin, et je rêverais que l’exploit se reproduise à Longchamp. »

« Le train peu sélectif que nous avons eu à Saint Cloud n’a pas convenu à Danedream ce jour là. Les chevaux ne sont pas des machines. Elle a été battue très tôt, ce qui ne lui était encore jamais arrivé, et quand elle est rentrée à l’écurie, elle était tellement calme que ce n’était pas la pouliche que je connaissais. »

« Naturellement nous avons pensé « a-t-elle réussi à progresser à quatre ans ?» mais elle a galopé avec le même enthousiasme qui la caractérisait à 3 ans. Alors après sa contre performance de St Cloud on se serait satisfait d’une place à Ascot, mais nous n’étions pas surpris de la voir gagner. »

« Elle est tellement brave, elle s’est battue comme un tigre pour battre Nathaniel – Sa forme est sûre, alors pourquoi ne pourrions-nous pas gagner à nouveau l’Arc ? »

Pieter Schiergen, qui entraine Danedream, était un très bon jockey lui-même, il a remporté cinq cravaches d’or, avec un record européen de 271 victoires en 1995. Depuis il s’est installé comme entraîneur à Cologne et il a vite fait partie des meilleurs de sa profession.

Il a déjà entraîné de super chevaux comme Tiger Hill, Catella, Sumitas et Boreal, mais c’est Danedream qui lui a offert ses meilleurs souvenirs professionnels. Comme Starke, il vient à Longchamp avec de grosses ambitions. Il explique: « Danedream a été décevante à ☛

Saint Cloud, car il n’y a pas eu assez de train. Elle a besoin d’un galop plus soutenu et c’est ce qu’elle a eu dans l’Arc l’an passé, vous avez alors apprécié son vrai visage.

« De la même façon, à Ascot les leaders sont partis vite, ce qui lui a convenu. Remporter les deux plus grandes courses au monde, c’est très important pour les courses allemandes. A la maison, tout le monde l’a vue à la télé, et nous sommes alles fêtér cela en suite. C’était comme si l’Allemagne avait remporté une médaille d’or aux Jeux Olympiques. »

« Danedream a un très bon tempérament, c’est très important et décisif pour les grandes courses. Elle est très calme à l’écurie et dans son travail le matin, sa préparation s’est bien passée. »

« Clairement, ce sera dur de gagner l’Arc une nouvelle fois. Il est prouvé que cette course réussit plus aux trois ans. Nous n’aurons plus l’avantage au poids cette année, mais on sait que Danedream ne nous laissera pas tomber.»

« Elle est peut être petite mais elle a un cœur plus gros qu’elle, et notre plus beau rêve serait de gagner l’Arc avant de finir en beauté sa carrière par une victoire dans la Japan Cup. »

« Ce qui rendrait Mr Yoshida très heureux. Nous avons déjà eu beaucoup de chance et tout ce qui suit maintenant sera du bonus. » n

Danedreams Do Come TrueGeOFF LesTeR talks to the connections of Danedream who are hoping to create more Qatar Arc history with a back-to-back double.

Although the stats are firmly against Danedream producing an action replay and winning a second successive Qatar Arc this week who would deny the courageous filly another glorious victory. Alleged was the last back-to-back winner of Europe’s greatest race in 1978, and while the odds are stacked against Danedream with

only three older horses having toppled the classic generation in the last 18 runnings, the fairy story of the rags-to-riches German filly with the Cinderella profile could have another happy ending.

Shocks and surprises had been few and far between in the history of the Great Race until furniture retailer Heiko Volz gave the Qatar Arc to the people 12 months ago when the record-breaking Danedream trounced her more illustrious rivals in record time.

Volz, who paid just 9,000 euros for Danedream at the Breeze-Up Sale in Baden-Baden, had tasted classic success with Tryphosa in the 1995 German 1,000 Guineas, but he was a pauper compared to the likes of Godolphin, Coolmore or the Niarchos and Wildenstein families until he entered the rarefied winner’s circle of world-class champions .

Danedream had taken her time in making a good impression as a class act on the European stage, winning just the once as a two year old – a maiden at Wissembourg on the French borders. But connections were encouraged by her performance in staying on to finish sixth in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp, and a runaway success in the Italian Oaks the following summer was the stepping-stone to stardom.

Two Group 1 victories in her homeland persuaded connections to stump up the 100,000 euros required to supplement Danedream for last year’s Arc, and it is now history that she not

only equalled the five lengths winning margins of Helissio and Peintre Celebre but also eclipsed the latter’s course record.

Certainly, leading Japanese owner-breeder, Terry Yoshida was sufficiently impressed, prior to the Arc, to buy a half-share in the filly, who has since proved that she was no one-hit wonder by her courageous victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July.

Maybe Yoshida has a date fixed in his 2013 diary for a mating with Harbinger, Deep Impact or Workforce, all of whom stand at his Shadai Farm, and the owners are to be congratulated on keeping Danedream in training as a four-year-old. Their enterprise has already been handsomely rewarded and there is the prospect of even greater glories to come.

The filly didn’t look such a good investment when she trailed in last of four behind Méandre in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in June, but a glorious last stride success over Nathaniel in the King George the following month dispelled all those doubts and had the owners looking forward to defending their Qatar Arc crown.

Andrasch Starke, who rides Danedream so well, has no doubt that the filly is as good as ever, commenting: ”Winning the Arc and the King George are the two best moments of my racing career, but when you have done something once you want some more, so I’d love for it to all happen again at Longchamp.

“The slow pace did not suit us at Saint-Cloud and I’m also convinced that Danedream was not herself that day. Horses are not machines. She was beaten early in the straight which has never happened before. She did not kick once,

which is not like her, and when we got her home she was so quiet and not the filly I know.

“Naturally, you start to question ‘has she trained on?’, but she worked with all her old enthusiasm before Ascot.

“After her Saint-Cloud performance we would have been happy to settle for a place at Ascot, although we were not surprised that she won.

“She is so brave and she fought like a tiger to catch Nathaniel. Her form is rock-solid, so why shouldn’t we win the Arc again?”

Pieter Schiergen, who trains Danedream, was no mean jockey himself, taking the riders’ title five times, including in 1995 when he set a European record of 271 wins. Since setting up as a trainer in Cologne he has been quick to climb to the top of his profession.

However, while he has risen to racing’s elite with the likes of Tiger Hill, Catella, Sumitas and Boreal, Danedream has provided him with world-class memories and, like Starke, he is coming to Longchamp full of confidence.

He said: ”The reason that Danedream ran so disappointingly at Saint-Cloud was because there was no pace. She needs a strong gallop

and that is what she got in last year’s Arc, and you saw how good she was that day.

“Similarly, at Ascot the leaders went off fast, which suited us, and to win what are two of the major races in the world is very important for German racing. Everyone was watching at home on television, and there were huge celebrations afterwards. It was like Germany winning an Olympic gold medal.

“Danedream has a great temperament, which is also crucial when you come to these big races. She is very relaxed at home and so good in the mornings, and her preparation has gone really well.

“Obviously, it will be tough to win the Arc again. It has proved a three-year-old’s race and we do not get a weight-for-age allowance this year, yet we know that Danedream won’t let us down.

“She may be only small, but she is all heart and our perfect dream would be to win the Arc again and finish her racing career by landing the Japan Cup.

“That would make Mr Yoshida very happy. We have already been so lucky and anything that comes now is a bonus.” n

Les contes de fées peuvent devenir réalité...

Il faut prendre du temps pour connaître la version féminine de toutes les espèces, qu’elles soient humaine ou équine. Si la

championne globe trotter Snow Fairy a eu onze jockeys différents dans sa carrière, personne ne l’a monté aussi bien que l’ancienne cravache d’or en Grande Bretagne, Ryan Moore, qui est invaincue en sept Groupes l avec l’élève d’Ed Dunlop.

Ryan, qui est aussi discret que le fameux Lester Piggott, ne montre pas ses émotions ; pourtant, même lui avait l’air ému quand Snow Fairy est revenue après plus de neuf mois d’absence pour gagner le Prix Jean Romanet à Deauville au mois d’août.

Dunlop a avoué qu’il avait bien pensé que c’était la fin de carrière pour Snow Fairy quand elle a été victime d’une blessure sérieuse au tendon, au Japon, en novembre dernier. Mais la jument, qui adore voyager autant qu’un randonneur, a donné tort aux vétérinaires quand elle est revenue encore meilleure qu’avant.

« Snow Fairy a gagné des courses niveau Groupe 1 dans cinq pays différents, son succès de septembre dans les Irish Champion Stakes la met à égalité avec Ouija Board, » commente Dunlop, qui préfère ne pas comparer ses deux cracks. « J’ai eu tout simplement la chance d’entraîner les deux. » Il nous laisse tout de même comprendre que le tempérament de Snow Fairy la rend plus facile à entraîner que sa compagne de boxe, double lauréate de la Breeders Cup.

Il ajoute: « Ce que Snow Fairy a fait est incroyable. Elle nous a emmené dans un tour du monde – Japon, Hong Kong, Dubai, France, Irlande – et nous sommes très fiers d’elle. »

« Elle a gagné au niveau Groupe 1 à trois, quatre et cinq ans, il n’y a pas beaucoup de chevaux qui réalisent cela. Honnêtement, j’ai cru que nous serions dans l’obligation de mettre un terme à sa carrière après le Japon l’année dernière, mais sa propriétaire, Mme. Christina

Patino, est tellement coopérative qu’elle a laissé à la jument le temps de nous montrer ce qu’elle pouvait faire »

« A cinq ans la plupart des juments en ont assez des courses, elles veulent aller au haras et ç’aurait été facile d’y envoyer Snow Fairy. »

« Mais quand on a commencé à la retravailler au printemps, son enthousiasme était toujours présent. Elle a un cœur énorme et elle est très dure. Si on a le même terrain léger que l’année dernière je ne vois pas pourquoi elle ne courrait pas aussi bien qu’en 2011 – voire mieux. »

Le palmarès de Snow Fairy comprend des victoires dans les Oaks d’Epsom et du Curragh, dans le Irish Champion Stakes 2012 et deux succès dans la Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup à Kyoto et une dans la Hong Kong Cup à Sha Tin. L’année dernière elle a fini troisième derrière Danedream dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, inversant le résultat des les Irish Champion Stakes par rapport à So You Think.

Ed Dunlop ajoute : « Frankie Dettori a monté Snow Fairy dans l’Arc en 2011, et il a cru gagner à 300 mètres du poteau. Même lorsque Danedream l’a doublé elle n’a jamais lâché. »

« Elle a une très belle accélération dans la phase finale, qu’elle a montré clairement l’année dernière dans le QEII au Japon. Sa préparation en vue de cette course avait pourtant été affreuse, elle avait eu une infection due à des piqûres d’insectes et nous n’étions pas certains de pouvoir courir. »

« Elle est si dure que nous avons commencé à croire que le rêve pouvait devenir réalité juste avant de tirer le pire des numéros à la corde, le 18. Mais Ryan est si détendu que, même s’il était encore très loin à 400m du poteau, il lui a demandé un effort et elle s’est envolée. »

« C’était la même histoire à Deauville en août. Elle s’est fait un peu bousculer par Izzy Top, mais Ryan nous a assuré qu’elle avait toujours été au dessus de la mêlée et même si c’était difficile,

elle a passé une vitesse supplémentaire pour accélérer jusqu’au poteau. » Comme celle de Danedream, l’histoire de Snow Fairy ressemble à un conte de fées à la Hans Christian Andersen. Pourtant même avec tous ses atouts féminins, elle ne gagnera jamais un concours de beauté. Elle était si petite yearling, qu’elle n’a trouvé acheteur aux ventes de Tattersalls en Irlande en 2008, qu’à seulement 1.800€, et c’est à ce moment là que sa propriétaire Mme Patino a préféré la garder et la mettre à l’entraînement chez Ed Dunlop.

Snow Fairy n’a pas tout de suite été impressionnante à deux ans, elle a gagné son maiden à Lingfield et a pris une place dans un Groupe à Goodwood.

Dunlop connaît très bien la qualité de ses élèves et il nous a avoué que le seul classique qu’il pensait gagner avec Snow Fairy serait quelque chose comme les 1000 Guinées allemandes.

Des problèmes de jambes ont forcé Dunlop à changer de programme ; il a été agréablement surpris quand elle a gagné pour sa rentrée dans une listed, le Height of Fashion Stakes, à Goodwood. Une performance qui a encouragé son entourage à payer 20.000£ pour la supplémenter dans les Oaks d’Epsom.

« Je n’ai jamais eu un partant dans les Oaks et j’ai peu de chance d’en avoir un jour un autre, » explique Mme Patino... Ryan a dit à Ed avant la course qu’il monterait Snow Fairy en attendant pour être sûr qu’elle tienne la distance. L’entraîneur était inquiet en début de course.

Il se rappelle: « Elle était dernière dans la descente d’Epsom, et je connais les problèmes de « bouchons » sur la piste, pendant une seconde j’ai failli ranger mes jumelles et rentrer au parking. »

« J’aurais dû la juger mieux que ça. Snow Fairy m’a laissé plusieurs fois sans voix. Elle est passée entre ses rivaux pour suivre les traces d’Ouija Board et a rendu mon après-midi normale tout simplement magique. » Elle était encore plus

impressionnante en Irlande quand elle a été supplémentée, cette fois pour 42.500€. Ce n’était pas rien. Snow Fairy a déposé ses rivales pour s’imposer par huit longueurs. Ensuite, elle n’a pas tenu la distance dans le St Leger, mais elle a eu un superbe automne sur distance plus courtes .

Elle a produit son accélération de dernière minute, tactique devenue sa marque de fabrique, pour gagner par quatre longueurs au Japon, avec une allocation portée à 1,47 millions

de livres grâce aux primes de la JRA. Sur le chemin de retour vers l’Angleterre, elle a encore gagné 934.426£, en remportant la Hong Kong Cup.

évidemment, Snow Fairy va trouver le combat plus difficile en courant contre les meilleurs mâles d’Europe. Mais il ne faut pas oublier cette pouliche-là car, comme elle l’a déjà prouvé à plusieurs reprises, les contes de fées peuvent devenir réalité. n

Dunlop’s globetrotting Snow Fairy-Tale

THE female species require a great deal of understanding whether they be human or equine, and, while the remarkable globetrotting superstar, Snow Fairy, has had 11 different jockeys throughout her

career, nobody rides her better than former British Champion Jockey Ryan Moore, unbeaten in seven Group 1 races on Ed Dunlop’s mare.

Ryan, who is as non-committal as the legendary Lester Piggott, does not do emotion, but even he seemed to be fighting back the tears after Snow Fairy had returned from a 280-day lay-off to win the Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville in August.

Dunlop confessed that he thought Snow Fairy’s racing days were over after she suffered a serious tendon injury in Japan last November, but the mare, who appears to enjoy travelling as much as any young backpacker, confounded the vets when she bounced back, not just as good as new but even better!

“Snow Fairy has won Group or Grade 1s in five different countries, and with her victory in the Irish Champion Stakes last month she is now level with Ouija Board,” observed Dunlop, who is reluctant to compare the different generations.

His comment, “I’m just very fortunate to have trained both fillies,” left me in little doubt that Snow Fairy’s rock-solid temperament makes her easier to train than her dual Breeders Cup-winning stablemate, Ouija Board. He added: “What Snow Fairy has achieved is phenomenal. She

has taken us all around the world – Japan, Hong Kong, Dubai, France, Ireland – and we are so very proud of her. She has won a Group 1 at age three, four and five, and not many do that. I honestly thought that we would have to draw stumps after Japan last year, but her owner, Mrs Christina Patino, is such a great sport that she held back the white flag and gave the mare time to tell us what she wanted to do.

“At five, most racemares have had enough and are starting to think of getting together with the colts, and we could easily have packed Snow Fairy off to stud.

“But when we started working her again in late spring all the enthusiasm was there. She has a huge heart and is very tough and if we get the same sort of fast ground why should she not run as well in the Arc this year as she did last – maybe even better.”

Snow Fairy, whose CV includes victories in the Oaks at Epsom and The Curragh, the 2012 Irish Champion Stakes, two Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cups at Kyoto and a Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin, finished an honourable third behind Danedream and Shareta in the Arc 12 months ago, reversing earlier Irish Champion Stakes form with Aussie star So You Think.

Ed Dunlop added: “Frankie Dettori rode Snow Fairy in last year’s Arc, and he thought he would win at the 300 metre pole. Even when Danedream sailed past her she never stopped trying. She has such a brilliant finishing

kick, which was never more evident than in last year’s QE11 in Japan. She had an awful preparation for that race, having suffered an infection from bug bites, and it was touch and go whether she would make it. However, she has such a remarkable constitution, and we started to think that the dream might become reality, only to be flattened when we received a coffin box draw in stall 18.

“But Ryan is so cool and, though they were a mile back at the 400 metre pole, he gave Snow Fairy a kick, and she just took off.

“It was the same story at Deauville in August. She got into a bit of a barging match with Izzy Top, but Ryan said afterward that there was no way she was going to come off second best in that battle, and, although things got a bit tight, she dug deep and turned on her after-burner on the run to the line.”

Like Danedream, the Snow Fairy story comes from the Hans Christian Andersen era. For all the filly’s talent, she would not win any beauty contest, and she was such a small, unprepossessing individual as a yearling that when she came under the hammer at the Tattersalls Sales in Ireland in 2008, she fetched only €1,800, so was returned to her breeder, Mrs Patino, who put the filly in training with Ed Dunlop.

Snow Fairy didn’t immediately impress as a two-year-old, winning a humble maiden at

Lingfield, but eventually being Group-placed at Goodwood. Dunlop is never one to confuse his geese with swans, and he acknowledged that if there was a Classic in Snow Fairy then it was probably going to be “something like the German 1,000 Guineas”.

Splint problems scuppered that plan, and Dunlop admitted to being “pleasantly surprised” when she made a winning seasonal debut in the Listed Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood, a performance which encouraged connections to stump up the £20,000 needed to supplement her for the Oaks at Epsom.

“I have never had an Oaks runner and might never have another,” reasoned Mrs Patino, and, though Ryan told Ed beforehand that he would hold up Snow Fairy to get the trip as there were

slight stamina doubts on her pedigree, the trainer was less than impressed with what he saw in the earlier part of the race. He recalled: “She was plum last coming down the hill at Epsom, and, knowing what the traffic is like there, I contemplated putting my binoculars away and heading for the car park.

“I ought to have known better. Snow Fairy has repeatedly left me speechless. She weaved her way through the field to emulate Ouija Board and make what looked like a mundane afternoon simply magical.”

She was even more impressive in Ireland, where again she had to be supplemented, this time for €42,500. It turned out to be money well spent. Snow Fairy simply annihilated the opposition by eight lengths, and, though she subsequently failed to stay in the St Leger, she enjoyed a golden autumn when dropped back in trip.

She produced her now customary late whirlwind finish to win by four lengths in Japan, collecting a first prize which was increased to £1.47m through JRA bonuses. On her way home to England she picked up another £934,426, courtesy of winning the Hong Kong Cup.

Clearly, Snow Fairy will find it tough now that she is back mixing it with the best colts in Europe. But you ignore this filly at your peril. As she has proved several times already, Fairy tales do come true. n

‘The Wetter the Better for Nathaniel’ GeOFF LesTeR talks to trainer John Gosden and his stable jockey William Buick, who hopes to crown a golden season, riding six Group One winners, by taking Nathaniel to Qatar Arc glory.

Avant, le parapluie était l’élément indispensable le jour de l’Arc, bien plus encore que les jumelles. Même si les saisons ont changé, on

espère toujours avoir un bon terrain pour la course la plus richement dotée en Europe. La philosophie de William Buick, le jockey de Nathaniel est donc la suivante : « plus il pleuvra, meilleur ce sera. »

Cela fait 12 mois que William attend le feu vert de John Gosden pour réserver son billet pour Paris pour monter Nathaniel. L’an passé il avait été supplémenté par ses propriétaires, la famille Rothschild, pour courir cette course mythique, mais le terrain trop léger du mois d’octobre 2011 l’avait contraint à abandonner.

Buick, ravi de ses 6 victoires de Groupe I cet été, explique : « C’était une grande déception de ne pas courir Nathaniel, que nous pensons être un vrai cheval d’Arc. »

« Mais c’était peut être un mal pour un bien. Il s’est développé, il a pris beaucoup de force de trois à quatre ans et il est maintenant plus mature. »

« Cette année il a commencé sa saison assez tard, à cause d’un problème à la gorge. Il a donc de la fraîcheur pour arriver sur l’Arc, un élément important. »

« Le terrain sera la clé pour Nathaniel, et même s’il est bon en terrain léger, il est encore meilleur en terrain assoupli. »

« Nous avons eu des conditions idéales avant les Eclipse de Sandown en juillet. C’était sa rentrée et pour être honnête je n’ai jamais pensé qu’il pouvait gagner face à un lot si relevé. »

« Sincèrement, le patron considérait cette course comme une préparatoire en vue du King George, c’était donc une bonne surprise de le voir s’imposer. »

« A cause des Jeux Olympiques, il n’y avait que deux semaines entre les Eclipse et le King George, cela arrivait vite pour Nathaniel et ça nous inquiétait un peu. »

« Mais c’est un cheval tellement dur et généreux qu’il n’a été battu que d’un nez par Danedream. »

« Finir tout près de la gagnante de l’Arc était incroyable, on était très fier de lui, surtout avec si peu de récupération entre les deux épreuves. C’est un cheval qui a une vraie vitesse de base, et sur des pistes comme Ascot et Longchamp, cela sert ses intérêts. »

« J’ai monté Duncan dans l’Arc il y a deux ans. Cela m’a permis d’apprendre à connaitre Longchamp qui n’est pas une piste facile. Duncan était un cheval de tenue, mais il n’avait pas la classe de Nathaniel. Nous avons vraiment une bonne chance cette année si nous avons notre terrain le jour J. »

Buick n’a pas connu le meilleur des débuts d’année, après s’être fracturé la mâchoire, mais depuis Royal Ascot, tout va de mieux en mieux.

Il se souvient avec fierté des moments de gloire lors de ses grandes victoires récentes. “Monter cinq gagnants pendant Royal Ascot, c’était quelque chose d’extraordinaire. J’ai aussi gagné les Pretty Polly Stakes au Curragh avec Izzy Top et les Irish Oaks associé à Great Heavens, la propre sœur de Nathaniel qui aime le terrain souple autant que lui.

« Rejoindre l’équipe de John Gosden il y a deux ans et demi est la meilleure chose que j’ai faite. Nous explique Buick, dont le père Walter a été huit fois cravache d’or en Norvège. »

« Ça s’est fait vraiment par hasard. Il m’a appelé un jour et m’a demandé de venir à Newmarket pour discuter. Nous avons sympathisé immédiatement. C’est vraiment

un homme formidable, si intelligent et si bon orateur, je ne peux pas imaginer travailler pour un meilleur patron. »

« Je monte cinq fois par semaine à Clarehaven avec une super équipe. John connait les courses par cœur, et il comprend que parfois cela se passe mal dans un parcours. Moi je joue toujours franc jeu avec lui, je lui dis quand je sais que j’ai fait une erreur. Cela ne sert à rien de lui cacher des choses, il est trop intelligent pour ça ! »

Gosden est sûr d’avoir pris la bonne option lorsqu’il a choisi la relève de son ancien jockey Jimmy Fortune.

« William est bien élevé, c’est un jeune home charmant, très poli avec les propriétaires, sans

parler bien sûr du fait que c’est un jockey de premier plan, » argumente Gosden.

« Je pense toujours que Frankie Dettori est le meilleur à l’heure actuelle, mais William s’en rapproche, et je suis ravi de notre très bonne période estivale. »

« Ça aide d’avoir de bons chevaux d’âge encore à l’entrainement. Ils auraient pu être retirés, ou partir chez Godolphin, mais nous avons de super propriétaires, comme la famille Rothschild, qui a étée très « sport » en supplémentant Nathaniel dans certaines courses au cours de sa carrière. »

Nathaniel a été nommé ainsi pour un clin d’œil à Nat Rothschild, l’un des quatre enfants de Mme de Rothschild. Il a tout d’un gagnant de l’Arc, et Gosden ajoute : « C’est une des plus grandes courses au monde, j’aimerais tant la gagner. »

« Mon père (Towser) espérait le faire avec Aggressor il y a 52 ans – le lauréat des King George était lui aussi adepte des terrains souples, ce qu’il a eu le jour J à Longchamp. »

« Mais il s’est renversé lors de son dernier travail, il souffrait de multiples déchirures musculaires au niveau de l’arrière main, il n’a donc pas pu courir. La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid, et j’espère qu’enfin ce sera l’occasion de prendre une revanche en l’honneur de mon bon vieux père. » n

GONE are the days when an umbrella at Longchamp on Arc Day was more of an essential accessory than a pair of binoculars, but, while the seasons have changed, we have come to expect easy ground for Europe’s richest race, and the philosophy of William Buick, who rides Nathaniel, is “the wetter the better.”

William has waited 12 months for the green light from trainer John Gosden to book his flight to Paris for the ride on Nathaniel, having been denied the chance to add the Arc to his CV last year when summer and autumn got their wires crossed and swapped places in early October, causing Nathaniel to have to be withdrawn, despite having been supplemented by the Rothschild family, the colt’s owner-breeders.

Turning the clock back, Buick, who has enjoyed a golden summer on the track this year winning six Group 1 races, said: ”It was such a disappointment having to pull Nathaniel out as we have always felt that he was the perfect Arc horse.

“However, maybe it was a blessing in disguise. He has developed so much from three to four and is now that much stronger. He has filled out in all the right places, and, having been a late-starter this season because of the throat infection he suffered in the spring, he is a relatively fresh horse, which is what you need for the Arc.

“The ground is the key to Nathaniel, and, while he is fine on good ground, he is deadly when it comes up soft.

“We had our ideal conditions for the Coral Eclipse at Sandown in July, but it was Nathaniel’s comeback race, and in all honesty we never felt that he could win first time out in that company.

“Obviously, he was doing his best, but the boss was looking at the Eclipse very much as a prep-race for the King George, so it was a bit of a surprise that he managed to win.

“Because of the Olympics, there was only a two-week gap this year between the Eclipse and the King George, so we were concerned that by going to Ascot the race would come too soon.

“But Nathaniel is such a tough horse, and he ran his heart out at Ascot, being beaten only on the nod by Danedream. To run the Arc winner so close just two weeks after winning an Eclipse was truly unbelievable, and we were all so very proud of him. He’s a

horse with such a high cruising speed, and tracks like Ascot and Longchamp will always bring out the best in him.

“I rode Duncan in the Arc two years ago, and he ran really well. It was a big help in getting to know Longchamp, which is a tricky course, but, though Duncan is a good stayer, he would not have the class of Nathaniel, who must have a great chance if we get our ground on the big day.”

Having had his jaw broken in March, Buick did not enjoy the best start to 2012, but from Royal Ascot onwards things have just got better and better.

He recalls with some pride a string of big-race celebrations in recent months. “Riding five winners at Royal Ascot was something else, and either side of Nathaniel’s Eclipse victory I went to The Curragh and won a Pretty Polly on Izzy Top and an Irish Oaks on Great Heavens, who is a full-sister to Nathaniel and enjoys soft ground as much as he does.

“Joining forces with John Gosden two and a half years ago was the best move I could possibly have made,” says Buick, whose father Walter was eight times champion jockey in Norway.

“It all came out of the blue. He called me one day and asked me to come up to Newmarket for a chat. We hit it off immediately. He is such a great guy, so intelligent and articulate, and I couldn’t imagine working for a better boss.

“I rode out at Clarehaven five days a week, and they have a great team there. John knows racing inside out and he understands that on occasions

things can go wrong in a race, but I always believe in being open and holding my hands up when I have made a mistake. There would be no point in trying to pull the wool over John’s eyes. He’s too smart for that.”

Gosden has no doubt that he made the right appointment when swooping on the youngster to succeed Jimmy Fortune as stable jockey.

“William has been brought up the proper way. He’s a lovely young man, very polite to the owners, not to mention being a top-class jockey,” says Gosden

“I still believe that pound for pound Frankie Dettori is the best around, but William is getting pretty close to Frankie, and we have enjoyed an amazing run this summer.

“It helps that we had some smart older horses staying in training. In days gone by, they might

have been retired or gone to Godolphin, but we have some great owners, including the Rothschilds, who have been very sporting in stumping up supplementary fees along the way for Nathaniel.”

Nathaniel, who is named after Nat Rothschild, one of Lady Rothschild’s four children, has everything you look for in an Arc winner, and Gosden said: ”The Arc is one of the greatest races in the world, and I’d love to win it.

“My father (Towser) was robbed of victory with Aggressor 52 years ago – the King George winner was another mudlover and had his ground for Longchamp but he flipped over backwards in his final gallop and tore all the muscles behind.

“They say that revenge is a dish best served cold, so it would be nice to think that it is finally payback time for my dear old dad.” n

Le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – élégance et magnificenceL’actrice BO DEREK est devenue la femme la plus désirée au monde grâce au film ‘10’ sorti en 1979 avec l’acteur Dudley Moore, et grâce à ses films et émissions qui ont suivi. Aujourd’hui elle est devenue une militante pour le bien-être des chevaux ainsi que membre du California Horse Racing Board (Association des courses en Californie). Elle a également travaillé avec l’Animal Welfare Institute à Washington. Elle est l’Ambassadrice de la Breeders Cup, assure la promotion des courses à l’international, et se définit comme une grande admiratrice du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Elle était présente pour l’Arc en 2009 et en 2011. Elle a parlé ouvertement avec Mike Gallemore de son amour du cheval et des courses internationales.

Je suis allée aux courses partout dans le monde et  j’étais  présente  lors des plus grands meetings,  et il faut dire que le

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est un de mes événements préférés. C’est  tellement bien organisé, de façon  élégante  et magnifique. C’est un  événement  international  dédié  aux courses hippiques et à ces animaux admirables.

L’atmosphère est aussi  très  différent des autres événements. Les turfistes sont bien informés et vraiment passionnés par les chevaux, les jockeys, la piste – tous les aspects de cette belle occasion. L’ambiance en général, le weekend de l’Arc, est génial.

Le  dîner  de l’Arc, qui a eu lieu au Louvre en 2009, était époustouflant. J’adore me promener sur  l’hippodrome, siroter du champagne Moet & Chandon, discuter avec des amis et regarder les chevaux.  C’est un cadre fabuleux et rencontrer tellement de nationalités  différentes  à Longchamp le rend encore plus intéressant.

J‘ai été invitée à l’Arc par la Breeders Cup pour la première fois en 2009 et à nouveau l’année  dernière  en tant qu’ambassadrice. Je remettais les  trophées  aux gagnants et des invitations pour venir  courir  aux  Etats Unis contre les meilleurs chevaux pour l’événement le plus richement doté du monde. C’était super !

Je suis tombée amoureuse de la beauté des chevaux quand j’étais  très  jeune. Quand on regarde les autres  sports  équestres, je crois que la course est la chose la plus naturelle qu’on puisse leur demander. Les chevaux  de courses ont une vie de luxe mais ils nous donnent tellement de plaisir.

J’ai profité de la plupart de ma jeunesse à faire de la voile et du surf sur les plages de Californie jusqu’au jour où mon père nous  a acheté, à mon frère et moi, un cheval de courses à la retraite. Nous avons adoré ce

cheval et nous avons connu  beaucoup de plaisir avec lui. 

Chez moi dans mon ranch en Californie je suis entourée des chevaux. J’ai des espagnols et des Lusitaniens. Les prairies forment un cercle autour de la maison pour que je puisse en  apercevoir  de chaque  fenêtre. Nous n’élevons pas de chevaux depuis longtemps mais nous avons tout de même déjà des poulains de la troisième génération.

Le  résultat  de l’Arc 2011 était une surprise avec la victoire de la jument allemande Danedream et c’est  ça  justement  la beauté des courses internationales.  La Breeders Cup se déroulera en Californie cette  année  et également en  2013.  Evidemment  cela me ferait plaisir de voir des chevaux californiens et américains gagner mais j’adore aussi quand des  étrangers  l’emportent  même  si je ne l’admettrais jamais aux Américains!

Je suis fascinée par le fait que les propriétaires des champions soient prêts à envoyer leurs chevaux en avion partout dans le monde pour participer aux épreuves de haut niveau. Les propriétaires, les entraîneurs et les jockeys ont une telle passion de les voir courir contre les meilleurs qu’ils sont prêts à faire tous les efforts !

J’adore venir à Paris, surtout maintenant que je peux vraiment apprécier la ville. La première fois que suis  arrivée c’était en tant que randonneuse à 17 ans, quand j’ai effectué un tour d’Europe. La fois suivante c’était juste après la sortie du film ‘10’ et c’était de la folie. Je ne pouvais pas sortir de ma chambre, c’était dingue.  Pour aller  dîner  au restaurant j’étais obligée de prendre une table dans un coin pour me cacher. J’avais l’impression d’être comme un cheval dans un  défilé  avant une grande course. Aujourd’hui, je vois Paris d’une autre façon. Je peux me balader dans les rues sans être reconnue et j’apprécie chaque instant.

C’est un autre monde pour moi maintenant. Le fait d’appartenir au cercle hippique rend mon monde  meilleur. Rencontrer des amis qui partagent mes intérêts me plait beaucoup. J’ai adoré l’attention des gens avant, mais je n’y reviendrais pas pour ma vie aujourd’hui. Etre  célèbre  est agréable et  je pense que c’est grâce à ça que je peux parler pour le bien-être des chevaux maintenant.

Même si j’ai réussi à gagner le respect des gens du milieu hippique je devais tout de même faire mes preuves. J’ai passé beaucoup  de temps à discuter avec eux et  écouter  leurs inquiétudes concernant l’industrie du cheval, eux qui connaissent les chevaux et les courses beaucoup mieux que moi.

Je n’avais pas un programme en tête quand je suis devenue membre de la commission du California Horse  Racing Board. Venir à l’Arc et discuter avec quelqu’un comme Louis Romanet est une  éducation  tout simplement. Il n’y a rien de mieux que de parler avec un homme savant comme lui pour recevoir des idées sur ce que nous pourrions faire en  Californie. Je le mets au courant constamment de ce qui se passe chez nous dans les courses en Californie, je lui parle de nos réussites. Parfois il est fier – parfois un peu déçu, mais pour moi, il a été d’une aide très précieuse. Je suis  contente et fière que la Californie soit un leader dans le bien-être des chevaux. C’est  très  important  pour moi, je me suis toujours considérée comme une représentante des courses et non pas une activiste.

C’est  très  enrichissant  de travailler pour trouver des solutions aux problèmes internes du milieu. Le  monde des courses n’aime pas les changements en  général, mais il peut  être  réceptif  si nous sommes bien organisés pour démontrer qu’il serait nécessaire de changer quelque chose.

J’aime le côté superstitieux des gens des courses, j’aime leurs secrets et leurs techniques qui sont transmises de génération en génération, je trouve tout cela passionnant.

Préparer un cheval pour une grande course est un art. Vous ne pouvez pas forcer le cheval, chacun à sa propre personnalité. Je trouve que c’est une expérience fascinante de venir des Etats Unis pour suivre l’Arc.

Et le fait qu’il soit sponsorisé par le Qatar le rend encore plus charmant, exotique et international. Un de mes premiers chevaux était un pur-sang Arabe.

Ce sont vraiment des animaux magnifiques. J’ai eu le plaisir d’aller au Qatar en 1997 pour suivre une épreuve d’endurance. J’adore regarder des pur-sang arabes courir. Ce sont d’étonnants athlètes, ils sont captivants, généreux, ce sont des sportifs de haut niveau. J‘adore ce coté là des pur-sang arabes.

Il y a très peu de courses de pur-sang arabes en Californie mais j’aimerais les voir se développer sur certains hippodromes connus.

Le Qatar Arabian World Cup est une magnifique vitrine pour les épreuves et ce pays fait un superbe travail pour promouvoir les courses réservées à cette race.

Je pense que les chevaux peuvent nous apprendre beaucoup. J’ai donné à mon autobiogrophie le titre : ‘Riding Lessons: Tout ce qui compte dans la vie m’a été enseigné par les chevaux’. Je pense que la leçon la plus importante que j’ai apprise, c’est d’être honnête. Vous devez donner à votre cheval toute votre attention.

Si vous êtes déconcentrés, vous n’arriverez pas à de bons résultats, tout est une question de communication. Il faut utiliser la même méthode avec les hommes. Comme les chevaux, les gens sont sensibles et complexes, ils ont donc besoin d’être traités avec respect et compréhension, comme les équidés.

Je suis ravie de continuer d’apprendre grâce aux chevaux et aux gens du monde des courses qui s’investissent pour promouvoir les courses internationales et le bien-être des chevaux. n

Actress BO DeRek became arguably the most desirable woman in the world due to the 1979 movie ‘10’ with Dudley Moore, and subsequent films and television performances. Today she is a fervent horse welfare campaigner as a member of the California Horse Racing Board, and has worked with the Washington-based Animal Welfare Institute. she is also an Ambassador for the Breeders Cup, promoting international racing, and is a confirmed fan of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, having attended the Arc in 2009 and 2011. Here she talks candidly to MIke GALLeMORe about her love of the horse and international horseracing.

Le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – elegant and magnificent

I have been racing all over the world and attended many of the major meetings but I have to say that the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is one of my favourite occasions. They do it so well.It’s so elegant, so beautiful. It’s a great international event and

it’s all about the racing and these magnificent creatures. The atmosphere is also very different. The racegoers are knowled-

geable and genuinely interested in the horses, the jockeys, the track – all aspects of the racing occasion. The whole ambience of the Qa-tar Arc Weekend is wonderful. The Arc Dinner, which in 2009 was at the Louvre, was mindblowing. I love to walk around the racecourse, sipping Moet Chandon Champagne, talking to friends and looking at the horses. It’s such a fabulous setting and to see so many dif-ferent nationalities at Longchamp makes it all the more interesting.

I was first invited by the Breeders Cup to come to the Arc in 2009 and then again last year as an ambassador. My duties were to pre-sent trophies and invitations to the winners to come to the United States to race against some of the fastest horses in the world. What a wonderful gig. I fell in love with the sheer beauty of the horse at an early age. When you look as some of the other disciplines horses

are asked to perform I believe that racing is the most natural thing we ask horses to do for us. Racehorses are certainly kept in the lap of luxury but they provide us with so much pleasure.

Most of my youth was spent sailing and surfing on the beaches of California but my father bought me and my brother an old retired rental horse. We loved that horse and we had so much fun with it. At home on the ranch in California I am surrounded by our horses. I have some Spanish and Lusitano horses. Our pastures are in a circle around the house so I can see them out of every window. We don’t breed horses any longer but we have some third generation horses at home.

Last year’s Arc might have produced a surprise winner in the Ger-man horse Danedream but that is what international horseracing is all about. California will be hosting the Breeders Cup later this year and in 2013 and, of course, I like to see Californian horses and US horses win, but I’m also so pleased when an international horse wins, although I wouldn’t admit that to anyone back home.

I marvel that the owners of these great horses are prepared to fly their horses all around the world to compete in these great races.

The owners, trainers and jockeys have such a passion in seeing the best horses race against the best no matter what it takes.

I love coming to Paris, especially nowadays when I can really enjoy the city. I first came to Paris as a 17 year old backpacker doing the tour of Europe.

The next time I was in Paris it was shortly after the film ‘10’ came out and that was just madness. I just couldn’t get out of my hotel bedroom. It

was crazy. If I went to a restaurant I had to find a table in a corner and try and hide away from everyone. Actually, it was a bit like being a race-horse in the parade ring.

Nowadays, I’m experiencing Paris in a totally different way. I can now walk through the streets unrecognised and enjoy every moment of it.

It’s another world for me now. Being within the community of horseracing makes the world a better place for me. To meet with friends with a similar interest is truly wonderful.

I loved all the attention of those days but I wouldn’t trade it for the life I have now. Being famous was fun and I guess it helped put me in a position to be able to speak about horse welfare in later years, although I first had to earn the res-pect of the horseracing community.

I’ve had to prove myself. I’ve spent a lot of time listening and talking to people in the in-dustry about their concerns, people who know far more than I will ever know about horses and horseracing.

I didn’t have an agenda regarding horse welfare when I became a commissioner of the California Horse Racing Board. Coming to the Arc, for instance, and talking to Louis Romanet is an education in itself. There’s nothing better than talking to that beautiful, knowledgeable man to find out what we should be doing in California.

I constantly update him on what’s going on in Californian racing and our accomplishments. So-metimes he’s proud – sometimes disappointed on some issues but he’s been invaluable for me.

I’m pleased and proud that California is a lea-der in horseracing welfare issues. These things are all-important to me but I’ve always regarded

myself as a horseracing representative and not an activist. I find it very rewarding to work on these issues from the inside of the industry. Horseracing in general doesn’t like change, al-though it is somewhat receptive and you’ve got to get all your ducks in a row if you’re going to change anything.

I love the fact that horseracing is superstitious and full of secrets and handed-down tech-niques and methods. I find that so interesting. Preparing a horse that wants to win a race is a fine art. You can’t force a horse to race and each racehorse has its own personality which you have to understand.

I find it a fascinating experience to come from the United States to the Arc. With the Arc being sponsored by Qatar it makes it much more ap-pealing and much more of an exotic, internatio-nal occasion.

One of my first horses was a Purebred Arabian. They are wonderful animals. I had the pleasure of going to Qatar in 1997 to see the endurance racing. I love to see Arabians racing. They are in-credible athletes and to watch them using their athleticism and their big hearts in competition

is enthralling. I love that aspect of the Arabian.We have Arabian horseracing in California

but I’d like to see it grow and for Arabian races to take place at some of the bigger tracks. The Qatar Arabian World Cup is a wonderful show-case for Arabian racing and the nation is doing a wonderful job in spreading the word for Pure-bred Arabian racing.

Horses can teach us a lot, in fact my autobio-graphy is titled, ‘Riding Lessons: Everything that matters in life I learned from horses.’ I believe the most important lesson I’ve learned is that you’ve got to be honest. You have to give the horse your full attention. When you’re distracted you don’t get the right result. It’s all about commu-nication.

We should use the same approach with people. Like the horse, people are sensitive and complicated and, just like horses, they need to be treated with respect and understanding.

I am happy to go on learning lessons from the horse and from all the people in the horseracing industry who put their efforts into promoting international racing, and in the wellbeing of racehorses. n

Il y a toujours quelque chose de spécial lors des fêtes de famille, et Anne-Marie O’Brien admet qu’elle aurait bien besoin d’un mouchoir si son fils, Joseph, âgé seulement de 19 ans, gagnait le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe pour

son père Aidan.Les O’Brien sont entrés dans l’histoire des courses et ils

furent le premier duo père/fils à remporter le Derby d’Epsom. C’était avec Camelot en juin dernier. Aidan nous a avoué que regarder son fils monter contre les meilleurs du monde hippique le rend très fier, sa femme Anne-Marie partage le même sentiment.

Il nous explique : « Nous sommes des privilégiés d’entrainer autant de bons chevaux à Ballydoyle, sans parler du fait que Joseph a le droit de les monter. »

« Les patrons (propriétaires John Magnier, Michael Tabor et Derrick Smith) étaient catégoriques, quand Johnny (Murtagh) partirait, il était défini que Joseph le remplacerait. Je ne peux pas les remercier assez de lui avoir offert cette opportunité. »

« Déjà avant que Joseph ne sache marcher, il faisait partie de l’écurie. Il restait assis sur le canapé tous les soirs et écoutait chaque conversation. »

« Il n’a jamais connu d’autres choses – les courses c’est sa vie depuis le premier jour. Même quand il était à l’école et avant qu’il ne commence à monter, il venait tous les matins sur les pistes avec moi. Il était habillé en uniforme scolaire pour regarder sortir le premier lot à l’entrainement. »

« Il connaissait tous les chevaux, les origines et le nom du lad qui s’en occupait. Une fois le premier lot sorti, j’étais presque obligé de le forcer pour aller à l’école »

« Naturellement, il est monté à l’entrainement régulièrement

pendant les week-ends quand il a grandi un peu. C’était un rêve pour lui de devenir étrier d’or quand il a commencé à courir en courses. »

« Les choses ont évolué ici et depuis que Joseph s’est amélioré, il a plus de responsabilités. »

C’est inévitable, les cyniques parleront de népotisme puisqu’il monte les chevaux seulement grâce à son nom mais Joseph, qui a beaucoup appris en regardant des jockeys comme Murtagh, Mick Kinane, Jamie Spencer et Kieren Fallon à l’entrainement sur les pistes de Ballydoyle, laisse maintenant exprimer son talent lorsqu’il est en selle, et il parle pour lui.

Si Usain Bolt ressemble plus à un champion de basket qu’à un sprinter avec sa grande taille, c’est pareil pour Joseph, du haut des ses 182cm il n’a pas la bonne taille pour être jockey.

Peut-être qu’un jour le « grand et maigre » garçon sera obligé de se tourner vers une carrière de jockey d’obstacle car il a déjà du mal à monter à moins de 57 kilos.

Mais même si depuis son enfance il a toujours entendu des histoires comme celle que son père a entrainé le légendaire Istabraq avec lequel il a gagné le Champion Hurdle de Cheltenham trois fois, Joseph s’intéresse plus à la vitesse qu’aux obstacles. Surtout depuis Camelot, grâce auquel il a gagné son premier classique en Angleterre, dans les 2000 Guinées à Newmarket, quelques semaines avant de remporter le Derby d’Epsom.

Aidan ajoute : « On a déjà connu des journées magiques. La confiance de Joseph s’est accrue depuis qu’il a remporté la Breeders Cup Turf l’année dernière avec St Nicholas Abbey. »

tous les matins et je n’ai pas été surpris quand il m’a annoncé qu’il voulait faire le tour de l’hippodrome de Newmarket à pied avant de monter Camelot dans les Guinées. »

« On était juste à coté du poteau des 800m quand il m’a regardé et qu’il m’a dit, ‘Papa, ne t’inquiète pas quand tu me verras plus près des derniers que de la tête à cet endroit là. Je n’ai rien dit – j’ai appris à me taire... Et nous ne pouvions être que ravis quand il a fait comme il l’avait annoncé et que ça a marché. »

« Même si Camelot est un fils de Montjeu, il tient beaucoup de Kingmambo et de Danehill, on s’inquiétait donc sur son aptitude au terrain à Epsom et encore plus pour celui au Curragh. C’était un vrai test pour lui dans le Derby Irlandais. Dans mes rêves les plus fous je n’ai jamais imaginé regarder le Derby d’Epsom, avec Anne-Marie à mes cotés et voir Joseph gagner par cinq longueurs. »

« On a entrainé des champions à Ballydoyle depuis mon arrivée mais rien à voir avec la classe de Camelot. Il est une exception depuis le premier jour. A Epsom Joseph, l’a monté en patientant derrière car c’est un cheval avec une pointe de vitesse impressionnante, il refait du terrain sans effort apparent. »

« C’était plus difficile au Curragh, et il faut dire que c’est grâce aux propriétaires qu’on a couru. Ça aurait était tellement plus facile de faire non partant. Après autant de pluie, le terrain était très lourd, mais on a pris un risque et ça a marché. »

« On savait que Camelot avait la classe, la vitesse et la tenue, mais au Curragh il a montré qu’il avait aussi la force et le courage. Comme Derrick Smith (propriétaire) l’a dit, « c’est un vrai champion. »

Le terrain était léger à Longchamp l’année dernière, Aidan, lauréat de l’Arc avec Dylan Thomas en 2007, et Joseph, espèrent que ce sera également le cas cette année.

Joseph, qui est maintenant beaucoup plus efficace dans les derniers mètres de course que l’an passé nous avoue : ”Gagner l’Arc serait la fin idéale d’une saison formidable pour nous en Europe. C’était incroyable de monter tous ces champions et heureusement que je ne connais pas la pression avant tous ces grands événements.

« Il faut essayer d’oublier les enjeux d’une course et les attentes de tous, car si un jockey est nerveux, il transfert son stress au cheval, ce qui n’est jamais bien. Des chevaux comme Camelot et St Nicholas Abbey permettent de rendre mon travail plus facile. Les deux ont beaucoup de vitesse, donc plus le terrain est léger plus ils peuvent s’en servir pour exprimer leur vitesse à l’arrivée. »

« C’est une évidence, il y a tout de même de la pression quand on monte le grand favori, mais mon boulot c’est de détendre le cheval et de m’assurer qu’il trouve son rythme. »

« Une fois que j’ai réussi cela, je peux vraiment monter une bonne course et espérer trouver les ouvertures dans le peloton au bon moment... Tout le monde a besoin d’un peu de chance– même Camelot. » n

THERE is always something special about family celebrations and Anne-Marie O’Brien admitted that tears of joy will undoubtedly flow if her 19-year-old son Joseph should win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for his father Aidan. The O’Briens became the first father-son combination to win the Derby when Camelot took centre-stage

at Epsom in June, and Aidan conceded that watching his son ride against the crème de la crème of the thoroughbred world gives both him and Anne-Marie enormous pride.

He said: “We are in such a privileged position in training all these great horses at Ballydoyle, let alone Joseph being allowed to ride them.

“The lads (owners John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith) were adamant when Johnny (Murtagh) decided to move on, that Joseph should step into the hot seat, and I can’t thank them enough for giving him his chance.

“From before Joseph could walk he has been involved in the operation. He used to sit on the sofa at meetings listening to every word that was being said and digesting it all.

“He has never known anything else – racing has filled his life from day one. Even when he was at school and before he started riding out he would hang out of the back of my jeep on the gallops in the mornings and watch first lot in his school uniform.

“He knew every horse, its pedigree and the name of the lad or lass who looked after it, and after exercise I had to almost force him to go off to school. ☛

“Obviously, he rode morning work regularly at weekends as he got older, and then when he started riding it was a dream come true when he shared the apprentice jockey’s title. Things have just blossomed from there on, and Joseph has thrived on the extra responsibility.”

Inevitably, the cynics will talk about ‘nepotism being alive and well,’ and there will always be misguided comments about ‘getting the top rides because of who he is’ but Joseph, who learned a great deal on those frosty February mornings watching not only Murtagh but also his illustrious predecessors, Mick Kinane, Jamie Spencer and Kieren Fallon, has let his riding do the talking in silencing his critics.

Just as it is hard to look upon Usain Bolt as a sprinter – surely he was born to be a basketball star – then, similarly, Joseph, who stands just short of 6 feet tall, is totally the wrong shape for a jockey.

Maybe one day the tall, skinny lad will have to switch codes and become a jump jockey as he struggles to ride horses carrying under 9 stone.

But, despite having been brought up on bedtime stories on how his father trained the legendary Istabraq to win three Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham, Joseph’s breakfast menu has always been all about speed – and none more so than with Camelot, who gave him his first British Classic success in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May and then followed up with the Derby.

Aidan added: “We have already enjoyed so many magical days, and Joseph’s confidence really soared after he won the Breeders Cup Turf

in California last year on St Nicholas Abbey. He gets inside the minds of all the horses through riding them every morning, and, consequently, I was not surprised when he told me how he wanted to ride Camelot when we walked the course at Newmarket before the Guineas.

“We were passing the four-furlong pole when he looked across and said, ‘Dad, don’t worry when you see me nearer last than first when we get to this point.’ I bit my tongue and said nothing – I am learning to shut my mouth. To our great joy he did just as he said he would do and it worked out great.

ePSOM DeRBY DReAM“Though Camelot is by Montjeu, he has

strong influences of Kingmambo and Danehill in him, so we were worried how he would handle the ground, both at Epsom, and, more importantly, at The Curragh where it was really testing for him in the Irish Derby.

“However, standing with Anne-Marie and watching Joseph win the Epsom Derby by five lengths was more than we could possibly have dared to dream.

“We have had some great horses at Ballydoyle since I went there but nothing as good as Camelot. He was exceptional from day one, and, though Joseph again sat well off the pace at Epsom, this horse has such unbelievable speed he was able to pick them up without too much trouble.

“It was tougher at The Curragh, and all credit to the lads (the owners) for giving the green light to run. It would have been easy to pull out

as the course had taken so much rain that the ground was very deep, but they took a chance and it paid off.

“We knew that Camelot had the class, the speed and the stamina, but at The Curragh he showed that he also has strength and courage. As Derrick Smith (the owner) said, he really is ‘the real deal.’ “

Longchamp came up with fast ground 12 months ago, and both Aidan, whose previous Arc victory came courtesy of Dylan Thomas in 2007, and Joseph are hoping that underfoot conditions will be similar.

Joseph, who is so much stronger in a finish than he was this time last year said: ”Winning an Arc would be the icing on the cake on what has been a wonderful season in Europe for us. It has been amazing riding all these equine superstars, but, fortunately, I don’t get too nervous on the big occasions.

“You have to try and block out your emotions and the pressure, because if a jockey is feeling nervous it will transcend down to the horse, which is never a good thing.

“Horses like Camelot and St. Nicholas Abbey make my job easy. Both of them have electric pace, so the better the ground the more they can utilise their finishing speed.

“Sure, there will always be pressure when you ride a short-priced favourite, but my job is to get the horse relaxed and to ensure that he quickly finds a nice rhythm. Once we have done that, I can ride a race and hope that I get the breaks when I need them. Everyone needs a bit of luck – even Camelot.” n

Röwer & Rüb – ‘in a league of their own’

Olivier Peslier n’est pas seulement un des meilleurs jockeys au monde, il est également un ambassadeur dans le monde hippique. Au cours de ses déplacements professionnels à travers le monde, il a tissé des relations solides avec l’ensemble des protagonistes de la filière équine.

Alors qu’il recherchait un constructeur pour son écurie en France, il a découvert que Röwer & Rüb étaient les meilleurs dans leur domaine. Peslier en est sûr : « Il y a beaucoup de bons constructeurs dans le monde mais je pense que Röwer & Rüb est au dessus du lot. »

Pendant qu’Olivier Peslier était à Dubai pour participer à la Dubai World Cup, il a rencontré son vieil ami le Cheikh Samir Mirdad, qui est un ressortissant saoudien vivant à Dubaï. Cheikh Samir est un conseillé des hauts membres de la famille royale dans le Golfe Persique. Il est connu comme l’un des meilleurs cavaliers amateurs dans le monde du jumping et fait parti de l’équipe de Mirdad.

Ses chevaux sont d’ailleurs hébergés à Mirdad Seaside Estate en Irlande, qu’Olivier Peslier qualifie comme étant une des plus belles écuries d’Europe. ‘ Quand le Cheikh Samir m’a dit qu’il recherchait un constructeur pour ses écuries, je savais que la seule entreprise qui serait capable

de le satisfaire serait Röwer & Rüb. » Marco Kray, Directeur Export de Röwer & Rüb, a déclaré : « Je suis allé en Irlande pour rencontrer le Cheikh Samir Mirdad. J’avais entendu parler de la beauté du site de Mirdad Seaside Estate, mais rien n’aurait pu me préparer à ce que j’ai vu... »

Tout a été réalisé sur mesure par les meilleurs ouvriers. Je peux dire sincèrement que c’était un des plus beaux endroits que j’ai vu dans ma vie. Le Cheikh Samir m’a informé de ses besoins et de l’image qu’il avait en tête pour son écurie, incluant des pièces en or massif et nous l’avons réalisé pour lui. »

Cheikh Samir explique : « J’ai travaillé directement avec Mr. Kray et doit admettre que l’équipe de Röwer & Rüb

était extrêmement professionnelle. Pendant mes échanges avec Mr. Kray j’ai appris que Röwer & Rüb avait construit beaucoup d’écuries royales dans la région du Golfe, dont l’Al Shaqab au Qatar. Ils ont aussi construit les écuries pour les Jeux d’Asie au Qatar en 2006, et le Jeux Olympiques à Hong Kong en 2008. »

Cheikh Samir a ajouté : « Il a fallut huit semaines à Röwer & Rüb pour contruire mon écurie. Leur équipe d’installation a composé de façon très rapprochée avec mon équipe, le résultat est là : j’ai la meilleure écurie que je n’ai jamais vu. Je suis extrêmement content de Röwer & Rüb et le recommanderai à n’importe quelle personne qui a envie de construire son écurie. » n

Olivier Peslier is not only one of the top jockeys in the racing world he is also a global equine ambassador. While researching which stables to buy for his yard in France he decided that Röwer & Rüb were top in their field. “There are many good stable manufacturers in the world but I feel that Röwer & Rüb are in a league of their own above all others,” he said

While riding in the Dubai World Cup he renewed his friendship with Sheikh Samir Mirdad, a Saudi Arabian National who lives in Dubai. Sheikh Samir is an advisor to royal family members in the Arabian Gulf and is one of the top amateur riders in the world and a member of Team Mirdad.

Shiekh Samir’s horses reside at Mirdad Seaside Estate in Ireland which Peslier rates as one of the best yards in Europe. “When Sheikh Samir told me he was looking for a stable manufacturer to build bespoke state of the art stables with gold on them, I knew that Röwer & Rüb would be able to satisfy his requirements,” said Peslier.

He informed me of his particular bespoke customised-design requirements, which included solid gold parts, that he wanted for his stables and we delivered. The gold work was a new challenge for us but one that we achieved. We are also installing an aquawalker at his yard.”

Shiekh Samir said: “I worked closely with Mr. Kray and I have to admit that the rest of the Röwer & Rüb team were extremely professional. I dis-covered that Röwer & Rüb have built many of the royal stables in the gulf region, one of which is Al Shaqab in Qatar.

“They also built the stables for the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar, and the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong.

“It took Röwer & Rüb only eight weeks to build and deliver my stables. Their installation team worked closely with my team and I soon had the best stable block I have ever seen. I would highly recommend them to any person who wants to acquire stables.” n

Même si le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe a été remporté à une des cotes les plus élevées de l’histoire de l’Arc, nul ne peut

mettre en doute la qualité de Danedream, facile vainqueur ce jour-là de quinze adversaires dont douze gagnants de Groupe I

La gagnante a parcouru les 2400 mètres en2’24»49, battant le record de Peintre Célèbre (1997), et amenant à deux le nombre de succès allemands dans la course, le seul précédent étant le totalement inattendu Star Appeal (1975), monté par Greville Starkey à 119/1.

L’entourage de Danedream devait être assez confiant pour un engagement supplémentaire de la pouliche au coût de 100.000 €

Elevée par le haras de Burg Eberstein, appartenant au haras Burg Eberstein et à l’éleveur japonais Teruya Yoshida, elle avait été acquise pour la faible somme de 9.000€ aux ventes de deux ans de Baden Baden en 2010. Yoshida a eu le nez creux en acquérant la moitié de la pouliche deux jours avant Le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe !

Le début de carrière de la pouliche avait été insignifiant, se composant d’un succès en sept courses, mais à l’approche de l’Arc, sa

carrière explosa et elle gagna successivement les Oaks italiennes, le Grand Prix de Berlin et celui de Baden Baden, trois Groupes I. Elle s’attaquait à l’Arc en pleine forme, confiée à Andrasch Starke.

Ce dernier était satisfait du bon train assuré par Shareta, leader de Sarafina, et Snow Fairy, et se contentait de maintenir Danedream à proximité. La belle Sarafina, So You Think et Workforce, gagnant en 2010, traînaient aux derniers rangs, leurs jockeys pensant sans doute que les premiers allaient faiblir. Quand ses rivaux les plus sérieux commencèrent à donner des signes de fatigue, Starke laissa Danedream se rapprocher pour passer les leaders sans effort apparent tandis que les St Nicholas Abbey, So You Think, Shareta et autre Snow Fairy ne

pouvaient que se contenter de ne pas faiblir. L’allemande connut un succès incontestable par cinq longueurs devant une Shareta déchaînée, Snow Fairy, So You Think et St Nicholas Abbey. Treasure beach, battu d’une tête dans le Derby d’Epsom, paya les efforts qu’il avait fait en assurant le train pour son compagnon d’écurie. Workforce ne fut que l’ombre du vainqueur de l’Arc de l’année passée, les japonais terminèrent sur la même ligne, dixième et onzième, mais tels les allemands, ils gagneront un jour.

Très ému en descendant de cheval, Andrasche Starke a déclaré  :  «  C’était déjà magnifique d’être au départ de l’Arc, et quand la pouliche a accéléré et que j’ai su que j’allais gagner devant les meilleurs chevaux du monde, c’était au delà du rêve. » L’entraîneur Peter Schiergen ajouta : « C’est le plus bel instant de ma vie d’entraîneur, je ne pouvais pas imaginer un succès aussi facile ».

Cette année, Danedream a remporté à la lutte les King George à Epsom, et pourrait bien être le premier double gagnant depuis Alleged.

Si le succès de Danedream a bien sûr été le clou du week-end, on ne peut oublier les six autres Groupes I ni la Qatar Arabian World Cup (voir la suite). ☛

ALTHOUGH THE 2011 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe produced the biggest surprise for many years nobody could deny the quality of Danedream or the decisive finish she produced to dismiss a high-class field of 16 that included 12 Group 1

winners.The fact that the German filly won with ease on good ground in a course

record time of 2 minutes 24.5 seconds, breaking the previous record set by the impressive Arc winner, Peintre Celebre in 1997, underlined the significance of longshot Danedream’s achievement – Germany’s only Arc winner, apart from the Greville Starkey-ridden Star Appeal who was sent off a totally unconsidered outsider of 24 at a staggering 119-1 in 1975 .

Danedream’s performance justified the belief that her owners had in the Lomitas three year old by supplementing her at a cost of 100,000€ only four days before the Great Race. Bred by Gestut Brummerhof and owned by Gestut Burg Eberstein and Japanese breeder Teruya Yoshida, Danedream changed hands for just 9,000€ in the 2010 Baden-Baden Sales. Considering her 2€ million plus prizemoney for winning the Qatar Arc, it proved a sound investment for Yoshida, who had bought a half-share in the filly from Eberstein, only two days before the Qatar Prx de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Although starting at odds of 20-1 the relatively unfancied Danedream had slipped under the radar. Her early racing career was notably unimpressive with only one win in her first seven races. But in the run-up to the Arc she won successive races at the Oaks d’Italia, the Grosser Preis von Berlin and the Grosser Pries Von Baden. She was a filly in form and on a roll.

Jockey Andrasch Starke was content to let Sarafina pacemaker Shareta and Snow Fairy do all the work up front, while keeping Danedream handily placed throughout. The much-admired Sarafina and So You Think, along with 2010 Arc winner Workforce, happily continued their journey at the rear of the field, no doubt believing the leaders would come

back to them. But when her more illustrious rivals started to show signs of struggling to stay with the pace, Starke made his move on Danedream and quickened, while the likes of St Nicholas Abbey, Shareta, Snow Fairy and So You Think failed to make any impression.

Danedream came off the bend with a wet sail and cruised past Shareta and Snow Fairy to win by a record five lengths. She became the 15th three year old in the last 18 years to win the Arc. Shareta finished a creditable second with Snow Fairy third and the Aidan O’Brien-trained So You Think fourth and stablemate St Nicholas Abbey fifth.

Treasure beach, beaten just a head in the Epsom Derby, paid for his early exertions in setting the pace for his Ballydoyle stablemates, finishing at the back, while Workforce looked a shadow of the horse who won the 2010 Qatar Arc. galikova, Reliable man, méandre and masked marvel were never at the races and the Japanese pair hiruno D’Amour and Nakayama Festa finished together 10th and 11th. The Japanese have always had their sights set on Arc glory and, like Germany, their time will come.

An emotional winning jockey Andrasch Starke said: “It was a dream come true just to ride in the Arc and it was a great performance by a good horse in a very competitive race. In the last two furlongs she gave me a great feel and when she kicked on I was truly dreaming.”

Danedream’s trainer, Peter Schiergen, added: “It’s my greatest moment in racing – it was fantastic. I couldn’t believe she was such an easy winner. She’s the best horse I’ve ever trained.”

Danedream has since added the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot to her CV in battling style and could become the first back-to-back winner of the Qatar Arc since Alleged in 1977-78.

DANeDReAm’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victory was the climax to the greatest two-day meeting in world racing which also included six other Group 1 races plus the Qatar Arabian World Cup.

QATAR PRIx du CADRAN – kAsBAH BLIss Le « neuf ans » kasbah bliss montre sa maniabilité et des ressources toujours très bonnes en venant du dernier au premier rang en finale des 4000 mètres du Qatar Prix du Cadran. Gerald Mossé pensait qu’il était apte à cette tactique, et laisse l’allemand Très Rock Danon et le très allant elyaadi faire le train. Lauréat en 2010, gentoo est le premier à prendre la tête avec Ley hunter au début de la ligne d’arrivée, mais ils sont facilement dépassés aux deux cent mètres par kasbah bliss qui gagne par une longueur et demie. François Doumen : « Courir en haies lui a appris à respirer, et il a le haut niveau maintenant sur longue distance mais il ne courra plus en haies. »

QATAR PRIx de L’ABBAYe de LONGCHAMP – TANGeRINe TRees Ce sprint de 1000 mètres est devenu un pré carré britannique. Cette fois, c’est Tangerine Trees, entraîné par Bryan Smart qui l’emporte. Tom Eaves , en selle sur ce hongre rapide, sort le plus vite et garde la tête jusqu’à la ligne d’arrivée, remportant ainsi son premier Groupe I. Co-leader au début, Captain Dunne faiblit tôt et laisse la seconde place au gros outsider Secret Asset, entraîné par Peter Chapple-Hyam, bon finisseur à 40/1. Le malchanceux de l’épreuve est sans doute l’irrégulier Sole Power qui aurait contesté le succès sans de multiples ennuis de parcours. Les favoris anglais Prohibit et margot passent inaperçus.

QATAR PRIx du CADRAN – kAsBAH BLIssTHE Francois Doumen-trained nine-year-old kasbah bliss showed his versatility in coming from last to first in the two-and-a-half mile Qatar Prix du Cadran. Gerald Mosse was confident in the ability of kasbah bliss in holding him up at the back of the field to let German challenger Tres Rock Danon and then the free-running elyaadi make the running. The 2010 winner gentoo was the first to take up the challenge along with Ley hunter but Mosse picked his way steadily through the field to win comfortably by a length-and-a-quarter from Tres Rock Danon, with Ley hunter and brigantin a short-head further back. A delighted Doumen commented: “Running kasbah bliss over hurdles taught him how to breathe properly, which made him stronger to run in Group 1 company. He won easily but he won’t be going jumping again.”

QATAR PRIx de L’ABBAYe de LONGCHAMP – TANGeRINe TReesTHE Qatar Prix de l’Abbaye, traditionally a happy hunting ground for the English raiders, saw victory going to the Bryan Smart-trained Tangerine Trees. Tom Eaves had the Mind Games gelding first out of the blocks and kept him up there right to the finishing line for his first Group 1 win. Captain Dunne shared the early pace but couldn’t stay with him. Outsider Secret Asset, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, provided the biggest threat. He clearly enjoyed the blistering gallop and ran the race of his life to finish a promising second at 40-1. Perhaps the inconsistent Sole Power, was the most unlucky runner, flying through the field in the final furlong to take a well-deserved third place. If jockey, Keegan Latham, had managed to avoid the early traffic the Abbaye may have had a different winner. The fancied English duo, Prohibit and Nunthorpe winner margot were never in the race. The best of the French challengers were mar Adentro (4th) who just ran out of steam and Wizz kid (5th) who put in an impressive late bid.

TOTAL PRIx MARCeL BOUssAC –Criterium des POULICHes – eLUsIVe kATeTHE John Gosden-trained elusive kate lived up to her name and her reputation in winning her fourth race on the trot for a comfortable wire-to-wire victory in the six-runner Marcel Boussac. elusive kate hung left coming off the bend but jockey William Buick soon straightened her up and she cruised home by three lengths ahead of Fire Lily who was taken left by elusive kate but her trainer David Wachman conceded that it had no bearing on the result. He was just happy to see Fire Lily make it two second place finishes in Group 1 races.The 5-4 favourite Zantenda made a late run but couldn’t match the quality and finish of the first two.

QATAR PRIx JeAN-LUC LAGARDeRe – DABIRsIM Dabirsim procure à Frankie Dettori son cinq-centième succès en course de groupe ! Bien que l’outsider Salure ait failli « voler la course ». Quand Frankie voit que Salure prend la tête par surprise, il se rend compte qu’il doit se frayer un chemin à la corde et accélère violemment pour l’emporter de trois-quarts de longueur tandis que Salure perd in extremis la seconde place au profit du bon finisseur So Fast. « C’est le meilleur deux ans que j’aie monté » lance Frankie en mettant pied à terre.

TOTAL PRIx MARCeL BOUssAC – Criterium des POULICHes – eLUsIVe kATe Critérium des Pouliches : Lauréate de ses trois sorties précédentes, la « Gosden » elusive kate remporte du départ à l’arrivée ce Groupe I. La pouliche penche à gauche en sortant du dernier tournant, mais son jockey, William Buick la redresse rapidement et cela devient une promenade de santé par trois longueurs Fire Lily, non sans pencher un peu sur cette dernière, sont l’entraîneur David Wachman admet qu’elle n’aurait en aucun cas battu elusive kate, et que cette seconde deuxième place de sa pouliche en Groupe I le satisfaisait pleinement. La favorite à 5/4 Zantenda a paru surclassée.

QATAR PRIx JeAN-LUC LAGARDeRe – DABIRsIM Dabirsim provided Frankie Dettori with his 500th Group race winner in a blistering finish, although the 40-1 longshot Salure almost stole the show. Dettori was content to keep the Christophe Ferland-trained colt in the pack as Salure took the initiative and shot into an early lead. But Dettori saw the danger and chose the correct route up the inside to produce an impressive burst of speed from the 4-7 favourite to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length from the fast-finishing, aptly named Sofast, ridden by Olivier Peslier, with Salure coming in third, a short-head further back. “Dabirsim is the best two-year-old I’ve ridden,” said Dettori. “He’s a superstar – he was electric.”

QATAR PRIx de L’OPeRA – NAHRAINNahrain offre à l’entraîneur Roger Varian son premier Groupe I par le plus petit écart possible, un nez.. Dettori bat ainsi au terme d’une terrible lutte la favorite Announce. A une longueur et demie, banimpire se classe troisième. Invaincue, la pouliche du Cheik Ahmed al Maktoum trace son parcours à la corde la plupart du temps, et quand elle trouve le jour à la distance, Dettori en profite pour prendre la corde et repousse jusqu’au bout d’un écart minimal l’assaut de la favorite Announce. Un beau succès pour Roger Varian qui a pris la suite de son défunt ami Michael Jarvis, mort en début d’année.

QATAR PRIx de la FOReT – DReAM AHeAD Dream Ahead prive goldikova de son rêve d’un quinzième Groupe I pour ses adieux au turf. Olivier Peslier prend le relais de son leader au meilleur moment, mais Dream Ahead (William Buick) ne tarde pas à la rejoindre. Le reste du peloton devient spectateur ; la course devient un match. Titulaire de l’épreuve un an plus tot, la jument dut concéder une tête au passage du poteau. Le troisième, Surfrider, est à six longueurs des deux premiers.

QATAR PRIx de la FOReT – DReAM AHeADDream Ahead spoilt the celebrations for goldikova who was bidding to win her 15th Group race as she took her bow from French racing. It was always a two-horse race as Olivier Peslier took over from stablemate pacemaker Flash Dance at the head of affairs and was quickly joined by William Buick and Dream Ahead. The rest of the eight-horse field were mere spectators as Dream Ahead and goldikova battled it out between them. The mare, who won the Foret 12 months previously, was beaten a head by the David Simcock-trained colt but it was no disgrace to lose out to such a class act. Christophe Lemaire eased Surfrider into third place, six lengths adrift of goldikova, the 4-7 favourite. “I just wish Goldikova hadn’t finished second because I’m a big fan and I’d like to have seen her win,” said William Buick, adding, “but the best horse, Dream Ahead, won.”

QATAR PRIx de L’OPeRA – NAHRAIN NAhRAIN provided trainer Roger Varian with his first Group 1 winner by the narrowest of margins in the Prix de l’Opera. Frankie Dettori edged out the 11-4 favourite Announce by a nose to win a hard-fought victory with banimpire one-and-a-half lengths further back in third. The Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum-owned unbeaten Nahrain ran the rail for much of the race and when a gap opened up in the closing stages Dettori took his opportunity and drove her forward to score his second win of the day. The Khalid Abdullah-owned Announce made a late run but Nahrain held off the challenge from Maxime Guyon. It was a welcome victory for Roger Varian who took over the training licence from his friend and mentor Michael Jarvis after his death earlier in the year.

Soumillon joue grosavec l’imprévisible mais surdoué Orfèvre

el Condor Pasa avait quelques deux longueurs et demie d’avance et semblait filer au poteau quand Mick Kinane et Montjeu surgirent et ruinèrent en quelques secondes les espoirs japonais d’un premier succès dans l’Arc. John Hammond, entraîneur de Montjeu, déclara : « Quand à trois cents mètres du but vous croyez que votre cheval est battu et qu’il gagne tout de même, c’est qu’il est un crack. » Le dernier Arc du siècle revint donc à un crack devant un très grand champion.

Le plus populaire des chevaux venus du pays du Soleil Levant fut sûrement Deep Impact en 2006. Un guichet spécial avec opérateurs parlant le japonais avait été ouvert pour accueillir quelques-uns des milliers de Japonais venus par avion. L’enthousiasme était colossal. Hélas la double faute de l’entraîneur, qui avait décidé de ne pas courir dans le Prix Foy, préparatoire trois semaines avant, et du jockey dont la monte trop confiante se paya cash, aboutirent à une troisième place que le champion perdit même sur le tapis vert. Dommage, le cheval et ses milliers de fans méritaient mieux.

Ce ne sont pas toujours les chevaux les plus médiatisés, ni même les chevaux au palmarès le plus flatteur qui réussissent le mieux. En 2010, deux Japonais sont au départ de l’Arc, autour desquels il n’y avait eu aucun battage particulier, et pourtant l’un d’entre eux, Nakayama Festa inquiète sérieusement Workforce dans la phase finale. Ce n’est que d’une tête que Workforce prive le Japon d’un premier succès dans l’Arc, en même temps qu’il offre à Sir Michael Stoute, son entraîneur, sa première victoire dans l’épreuve si convoitée.

Orfèvre est la propriété d’un syndicat de propriétaires, qui s’est nommé Sunday Racing co Ltd, un des plus importants clubs (c’est ainsi qu’on les appelle au Japon.) Il est constitué d’une centaine de membres. La dénomination administrative obligatoire est Club Corporate Owners. Il doit être admis par la Japan Racing Association. C’est M. Shunsuke Yoshida, fils du

C’est au printemps que l’on a appris que Soumillon monterait le japonais Orfèvre dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de

Triomphe. La nouvelle a étonné un peu. Pour que notre jockey numéro un s’engage aussi longtemps en avance, il faut qu’il ait beaucoup d’estime pour le quadrupède.

Ne disait-il pas un jour publiquement, en substance : « Je ne m’engage jamais dans une très grande course pour un cheval à chance moyenne, car je veux être disponible au cas où le jockey d’un très bon cheval ne pourrait pas monter au dernier moment. »

Les Japonais ont déjà envoyé en France quelques-uns de leurs tout meilleurs chevaux, s’attaquant au niveau des Groupes I les plus réputés. Le premier raid fut celui de Taiki shuttle en 1998, au départ du Prix Jacques le Marois. Le cheval appartenait à Taiki Farm et était confié au jockey Japonais Yuko Okabe Il avait de nombreux accompagnateurs, tous venus avec de nombreux billets de banque, à tel point qu’au pari mutuel, le cheval partit à une cote dérisoire.

Les guichetiers ne savaient pas comment faire face à un tel afflux d’argent liquide. Taiki shuttle,gagna, mais pas comme un grand crack. Les Japonais encaissèrent leurs gains sans se rendre compte que s’il y avait eu une Miesque ou une Goldikova au départ cette année-là, ils auraient pris l’avion de Tokyo les poches vides. Derrière le crack japonais, le lot était plutôt creux même si le troisième Cape Cross connut ensuite une belle réussite comme étalon.

Le deuxième crack japonais à tenter sa chance en France fut el Condor Pasa en 1999, un an après Taiki shuttle, mais sur la distance classique. Engagé dans le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud sous la selle de Masayushi Ebina, crack jockey japonais, il remporta la course par deux longueurs et demie devant le champion allemand Tiger Hill et le vainqueur du Prix du Jockey-Club Dream Well. Une sacrée performance ! Bien entendu, son entourage voulut tenter sa chance dans l’Arc, et il eut bien raison. A cent mètres du poteau,

célèbre propriétaire élèveur Katsumi Yoshida qui est président du club. C’est lui qui est habilité à prendre toute décision finale concernant Orfèvre. Il est lui-même fils de Zenya Yoshida, fondateur d’une grande dynastie d’éleveurs.

Le 18 mars dernier au cours d’un Groupe I, le Hanshin Dai Shoten, le cheval s’est presque arrêté dans le dernier tournant, est passé dernier avant de revenir à toute allure finir à une tête du premier. Cette course est visible sur Youtube.

Christophe ne semble pas alarmé : « On a voulu aller en tête avec lui, il est habitué à venir finir. Je suis sûr que c’est un champion et qu’il est très gentil. »

Entraîneur d’ Orfèvre, Yasutoshi Ikee a

quarante-deux ans, comme le célèbre Yukata Take avec lequel il réalisa ses études. Son père, entraîneur du fameux Great Impact, a pris sa retraite. Yasutoshi Ikee rêve de devenir jockey, mais sa croissance l’oblige assez vite à oublier le rêve. En décembre 1993, il commence son apprentissage d’entraîneur chez Kunishii Asami mais rejoint l’établissement de son père dès juin 1994, ayant obtenu sa licence du JRA en 2003 après deux stages en Angleterre chez sir Michael Stoute, puis aux USA chez Neil Drysdale.

Entraîneur à son propre compte dès le printemps 2004, il obtient son premier succès avec sonic surpass. Son talent se révèle dès

ses débuts, et il remporte en 2006 une grande épreuve avec un propre frère aîné d’Orfèvre, Dream Journey. Quand il remporte le Derby du Japon avec Orfèrve, il devient le premier fils vainqueur du Derby dans le sillage de son père (Deep Impact). Notez que le père et le fils ont tout deux réalisé la triple couronne. Leur plus cher désir est maintenant qu’Orfèvre réussisse enfin à être le premier japonais vainqueur de l’Arc. Car il ne faut pas oublier qu’avant un Deep Impact mal préparé et mal monté, un certain el Condor Pasa avait longtemps fait figure de gagnant dans la ligne droite de Longchamp en 2006, n’étant battu que par la terrible pointe de vitesse finale de Montjeu. n

Daniel Lahalle examines the credentials of the various Japanese raiders who have made their bid for Arc glory and looks at this year’s astonishing challenger, Orfèvre, the choice of France’s No.1 jockey, Christophe soumillon.

It was in the spring of this year that we learned that Christophe Soumillon would ride the Japanese horse Orfèvre in the

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The news was somewhat surprising, to say the least.

It clearly means that the No.1 jockey thinks a lot of this contender for him to confirm himself to ride so far in advance. He had previously declared: “I never agree to ride a horse that has only an average or good enough chance in a big race because I want to remain available in case the jockey of a very good chance cannot ride at the last minute.”

The Japanese have previously sent some of their best horses to France to attempt to win the most famous Group 1s. The first of the Japanese raiders was Taiki Shuttle in 1998 in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Owned by Taiki Farm and ridden by Japanese jockey Yuko Okabe, he was accompanied by so many supporters that he went off at a very short price due to all the money they gambled on him with the pari mutuel.

Taiki Shuttle won but not in the style of a champion. The Japanese punters collected their winnings without realising that if there had been a Miesque or a Goldikova in the race that day they would have returned to Japan empty handed. It was far from a strong field despite the future top stallion Cape Cross finishing back in third place.

The second of the Japanese stars bidding for glory in France was El Condor Pasa, a year after Taiki Shuttle, but this time over the Classic distance. Entered in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in the hands of top Japanese jockey Masayushi Ebina, he won the race by two and a half lengths from the German champion Tiger Hill and Prix du Jockey-Club winner Dream Well. It was an impressive performance! His connections wisely decided to take their

chance in the Arc. A hundred metres from the line, El Condor Pasa was two and a half lengths in front and looked to have the race won when Mick Kinane and Montjeu came flying through to dash Japanese hopes of a first Arc success in just a few seconds.

John Hammond, the trainer of Montjeu, declared: “When 300 metres from the line you think your horse is well beaten but he comes through to win, you know he is a champion. The last Arc of the century was therefore won by a true champion who beat a star.”

The most popular horse to come from the Land of the Rising Sun must surely be Deep Impact in 2006. A special betting window with Japanese-speaking operators was set up to provide betting facilities for the thousands of Japanese visitors.

Deserved betterThe excitement was immense. However, the

trainer committed two serious errors: Firstly, he decided not to run the horse in the Prix Foy, the traditional Arc Trial race three weeks before, and secondly he chose a jockey who was judged by the stewards to have caused interference during the race and was demoted from his third place. It was an unfortunate situation for his thousands of fans and the horse, who deserved better.

Japan’s latest challenger is the upredictable Orfèvre, owned by the Sunday Racing Co. Ltd. syndicate, one of the most important racing clubs in Japan.

The syndicate is made up of around a hundred members and under the rules of the Japan Racing Association it is run by the Club’s Corporate Owners. Shunsuke Yoshida, son of the famous owner-breeder Katsumi Yoshida and grandson of Zenya Yoshida who created the famous Japanese breeding dynasty, is

President of the Club and is responsible for making all the decisions concerning Orfèvre.

On March 18th when Orfèvre ran in the Group 1 Hanshin Dai Shoten, the horse practically stopped in his tracks and dropped back to last place before picking up again to produce a remarkable turn of foot to finish just a head behind the winner in second place.

Christophe did not seem particularly concerned: “Regardless, I am still certain that he is a champion and a lovely horse.”

Orfèvre’s trainer Yasutoshi Ikee is 42 years of age, the same age as the famous jockey Yukata Take, who he studied alongside. Ikee’s father trained Deep Impact before his retirement.

Ikee dreamt of being a jockey, but his height forced him to quickly abandon that ambition. In December 1993, he began his trainer’s apprenticeship with Kunishii Asami before joining his father’s team in June 1994. He obtained his JRA licence in 2003 after working in England with Sir Michael Stoute, and in the USA with Neil Drysdale.

A trainer in his own right since the spring of 2004, his first winner was a horse named Sonic Surpass. His talent was clear at an early stage and in 2006 he won a major race with Orfèvre’s older brother, Dream Journey.

When he won the Japanese Derby with Orfèvre he became the first son of a Derby- winning trainer (Deep Impact) to accomplish the same feat. Both father and son also trained the winners of the Japanese Triple Crown.

Their greatest desire now is to see Orfèvre become the first Japanese winner of the Qatar Arc. We cannot forget that before the unfortunate Deep Impact, a certain El Condor Pasa had looked to have the race in the bag coming up the Longchamp straight in 2006, before being beaten by Montjeu’s amazing turn of foot. n

Il y a des jours où l’événement se trompe. Si ce sont des jours importants, les tablettes sont fausses. Sans penser que tous les événements sont erronés, il y

en a quelques-uns que l’histoire du sport enregistre en passant à côté de la réalité. Ces jours-là, le virtuel est plus réel que le réel. La défaite de Nijinsky en 1970 dans le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est une énorme erreur de l’événement.

Voilà un beau poulain de taille moyenne, fils du meilleur étalon de l’époque, et de loin, Northern Dancer, qui se présente au départ de l’Arc 1970 auréolé d’un palmarès de onze victoires pour autant de sorties, toutes plus probantes les unes que les autres.

Sa réputation est d’autant plus fameuse que ses succès sont des exécutions successives, et qu’il est titulaire de la triple couronne si chère aux Britanniques : 2000 Guinées, Derby d’Epsom et Saint-Léger de Doncaster, soit 1609 mètres, 2400 mètres et plus de 2800mètres.

Le poulain était un finisseur et acquit rapidement une grande notoriété. A telle enseigne qu’Alfred Hitchcock a tenu à réaliser une cassette dans laquelle il commente toutes les courses du crack.

Quand Piggott lui demande de venir à trois ou quatre cents mètres du poteau, on entend la voix de basse du célèbre cinéaste annoncer « and here comes Nijinsky. »

Acheté 84.000 dollars aux ventes de Woodbine en 1968 – notre héros est donc canadien- il est adjugé au milliardaire sud africain Charles William Engelhard qui le confie au très réputé Vincent O’Brien.

Manifestement très doué, il est confié au début à Liam Ward, mais dès le groupe 1 Dewhurst Stakes, Piggott est intronisé et le montera toute sa carrière durant. Il remporte si facilement cette belle épreuve que les handicapeurs anglais le classent premier des deux ans de 1969.

Après un facile succès dans les Guinées à Newmarket, il part favori du Derby d’Epsom. Le lot de ce Derby n’est pas des plus costauds, et

ce sont deux poulains français qu’on lui oppose : le Stintino de Gerry Oldham, invaincu, entraîné par François Boutin et monté par Gérard Thiboeuf, et le Gyr de William Guest entraîné par Etienne Pollet et monté par William Williamson.

Etienne Pollet avait une telle estime pour Gyr qu’il avait retardé d’un an sa retraite pour veiller lui-même au destin du fils de Sea Bird.

Pour la première fois de la carrière de Nijinsky, Engelhard assiste à sa course. Dans sa loge, il a invité la veuve du célèbre danseur dont son poulain porte le nom.

Le déroulement de l’épreuve est limpide. Contrairement à ce que l’on craignait, Gyr négocie au mieux le mauvais « Tattenham corner » et prend la tête à quelque trois cents mètres du but. Mais Nijinsky place alors sa célèbre pointe, et devance de deux longueurs et demie Gyr. Stintino se classe troisième à trois longueurs.

O’Brien oriente ensuite son crack sur le Derby d’Irlande, qui se présente comme une simple formalité, tout comme, un mois et demi plus tard, les King George d’Ascot.

Début septembre, arrive le temps des

hésitations. O’Brien avait pensé ne pas disputer le Saint-Leger de Doncaster, mais réalisa alors que Nijinsky pourrait réaliser la triple couronne classique, Guinées-Derby-Leger que nul poulain n’avait réussi depuis Bahram en1935, trente-cinq ans plus tôt.

Et Nijinsky disputa et gagna le St-Leger, bien que convalescent d’un mauvais ver, et se présenta ainsi invaincu en onze sorties dont de nombreux Groupes I au départ de l’Arc. Cote de départ au pari mutuel français : 4/10.

Lester Piggott était alors considéré comme numéro un européen dead-heat avec Saint-Martin. Très professionnel, l’Anglais étudiait avec soin ses adversaires dans toutes les grandes épreuves où il montait. Là, il s’était mis en tête que le cheval à battre était Gyr, et il le marqua dès le départ.

Malheureusement pour Piggott, Gyr n’était pas dans un grand jour, et Piggott s’en aperçut un peu tard. Il voulut effacer son erreur et déboîta un peu brutalement pour se lancer à la poursuite de Sassafras que Saint-Martin avait fait démarrer sec aux trois cents mètres.

Sous les clameurs d’une foule qui aime voir gagner les favoris et surtout les chevaux de légende, Nijinsky se mit à combler son retard, mais il lui manqua une tête sur le poteau.

Les clameurs se turent, le public regarda sur son programme le nom du gagnant, et constata stupéfait que Saint-Martin avait une nouvelle fois pris une décision géniale qui lui permettait de gagner l’Arc à la cote de 19/1 pour la plus grande joie des inconditionnels de Saint-Martin qui n’ont jamais, avec lui, une telle cote à se mettre sous la dent.

Charles William Engelhard, attendait la rentrée de son poulain assis sur une chaise au pied d’un gros arbre du paddock, et dit simplement à Piggott : « You gave him a lot to do », en français « vous lui en avez beaucoup demandé. »

C’est le jour où l’événement s’est trompé. Le nom de Nijinsky n’est pas inscrit aux tablettes de l’Arc. On ne revit plus jamais les couleurs Engelhard en France. n

Nijinsky, the incredible Arc dramaDANIeL LAHALLe relives the 1970 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

There are days when the unbelievable happens, when the unthinkable becomes reality and the unbeatable are defeated.

There are moments in the history of sport where the result is almost impossible to believe and years later it still appears to be a work of fiction. The defeat of Nijinsky in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1970 is just such a case.

A handsome but moderately sized son of Northern Dancer – the best sire of his time –the colt lined up for the Arc that year with an extraordinary roll of honour: eleven successes in as many starts and each one more impressive and improbable than the last.

His reputation went before him and he had achieved the near impossible feat of winning the British Triple Crown of the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the Doncaster Saint-Léger, over distances of 1609 metres, 2400 metres and just over 2800 metres.

The colt had acquired universal notoriety as a superb finisher to the extent that Alfred Hitchcock produced a cassette on which he commentated on all the champion’s races. The moment jockey Lester Piggott asks the horse for an effort, 300 or 400 metres from the winning post, you can hear the deep voice of the famous film director announce: “and here comes Nijinsky!”

Trainer Vincent O’BrienBought for $84,000 at the sales at Woodbine,

Canada, in 1968 – thus making Nijinsky a Canadian – by South African millionaire Charles William Engelhard, he was then sent to the master trainer Vincent O’Brien in Ireland.

Clearly talented, he was first entrusted to jockey Liam Ward, but once he made Group 1 level in the Dewhurst Stakes, Piggott took over and he rode him throughout the rest of his career. He won the Dewhurst so comfortably that the English handicappers rated him the best two-year-old of 1969.

After an easy win in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, he went off favourite for the Epsom Derby. It was not the strongest of Derby fields but it did feature two fancied French horses in the unbeaten Stintino, owned by Gerry Oldham, trained by François Boutin and ridden by Gérard Thiboeuf, and William Guest’s Gyr, trained by Etienne Pollet and ridden by William Williamson. Etienne Pollet thought so highly of Gyr that he had postponed his own retirement by a year just so he could train this son of Sea Bird. For the first

time in Nijinsky’s career, his owner Engelhard was present for a race. He even invited the widow of the famous ballet dancer, after whom the colt was named, to watch the race from his box.

The race was not run at a fast pace. Contrary to previous concerns, Gyr handled the difficult Tattenham Corner well and took the lead 300 metres out but Nijinsky put his famous acceleration to good use and beat Gyr by two and a half lengths. Stintino finished three lengths behind in third place.

Triple Crown BidO’Brien then aimed his star for the Irish Derby,

which was a veritable formality for the colt, as was the King George at Ascot a month and a half later. Early September posed some difficult decisions: O’Brien had considered not running in the Doncaster Saint Leger until realising that Nijinsky could win the Classic Triple Crown of the Guineas-Derby-Saint Leger, which no colt had done since Bahram 35 years earlier. Nijinsky duly won the Saint Leger and arrived in Paris for the Arc unbeaten in his eleven starts, which included numerous Group 1s. In view of this, his starting price with the French pari-mutuel was 4/10.

At the time, Piggott was considered to be the

best jockey in Europe alongside Yves Saint-Martin. Ultra professional, the English jockey had studied in detail all his rivals in their previous rraces. He had decided that Gyr was the horse to beat and tracked him right from the start.

Unfortunately, Piggott realised too late that Gyr was not at his best that day. He tried to correct his mistake by pulling his mount out dramatically in an attempt to catch Sassafras and Saint-Martin, who had made their move at the 300 metre mark.

Despite the encouragement of the crowd expecting to witness another victory of a legend, Nijinsky was left with too much to do even for a horse of his talent, and was beaten a head on the line. The cheers died down and the crowd checked their racecards only to discover that the great Saint-Martin had won the Arc on a 19/1 shot courtesy of an ingenious display of riding.

Owner Charles William Engelhard awaited the return of his colt beside a big tree in the parade ring and said simply to Piggott: “You gave him a lot to do”.

That was the day when history got it wrong and consequently the name Nijinsky does not figure on the roll of honour of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Engelhard colours were never again to be seen in France. n

Philippe Germond : « Créer un vrai lien entre le PMU et sa clientèle »Daniel Lahalle a rencontré un président serein mais vigilant

Philippe Germond est le sixième président directeur général du PMU. Ou plutôt le quatrième, car les deux premiers étaient simplement

présidents du comité directeur et du conseil de gestion. A l’époque, le PMU n’avait pas d’existence juridique. Il n’était que le service comptable des sociétés de courses parisiennes. Si bien que personne dans le grand public, ne connaissait M. Pietri, ancien ministre et premier président , ni son successeur M. Voizard, pourtant gouverneur général du Maroc auparavant. On ne connaissait alors que André Carrus, directeur général, qui incarnait le PMU.

Avec les présidents Blot, Farges et Belinguier, le PMU est entré en régime présidentiel. Aujourd’hui, en cette quatrième année de l’ère Germond, le PMU est une entreprise autonome, un Groupement d’Intérêts Economiques, travaillant avec et pour les deux sociétés mères du Trot (le Cheval Français) et du Galop (France Galop).

Qui est ce Philippe Germond, entre les mains duquel repose en partie l’avenir des courses françaises ? Un quinquagénaire, diplômé de l’Ecole Centrale, titulaire d’un masters de l’université américaine de Stanford, qui a débuté sa carrière chez Hewlett-Packard en 1980 où il gravit quatre à quatre les échelons jusqu’à devenir une douzaine d’années plus tard directeur général du groupe pour l’Europe du sud. Il a ensuite dirigé d’autres très grands groupes, notamment SFR, Alcatel et Atos Origine. Et en avril 2009, il est devenu le quatrième président de l’ère présidentielle du PMU.

« Les deux sujets qui m’ont le plus passionné

dans ma vie professionnelle sont le marketing et la technologie de l’information. La présidence du PMU mobilise ces deux centres d’intérêt. Et quand j’ai accepté cette présidence, se profilait à l’horizon l’heure de l’ouverture des paris en ligne, passionnante synthèse de marketing, de technologie et de négociations internationales. Une perspective vraiment excitante. J’ai d’ailleurs eu la chance d’arriver à la direction d’entreprises actives dans des secteurs en pleine évolution. »

Un peu plus de trois ans après, l’ouverture des jeux s’est avérée positive alors qu’elle était crainte par une partie des dirigeants de courses français. Il a fallu que le PMU s’adapte vite et bien et Philippe Germond souligne une nouvelle fois que la qualité du personnel qu’il a trouvé au PMU y est pour beaucoup : « J’ai continué à travailler avec tous les cadres importants que j’ai trouvé en arrivant, et j’ai été bluffé par l’attachement qu’ils témoignent à l’entreprise et le mal qu’ils se donnent pour qu’elle réussisse. »

« Le contexte de l’ouverture des paris en ligne obligeait à élaborer une nouvelle stratégie à double objectif : assurer la croissance du pari hippique, qui doit rester notre grande vitrine, et réussir notre diversification avec tout ce que cela exige en organisation humaine et en technologie. Mission réussie puisque fin 2011, on notait une croissance de 4,5% des paris hippiques et que nous sommes aujourd’hui second opérateur pour le poker et quatrième pour les paris sportifs. Le premier semestre 2012 s’annonce du même genre. »

« Il est intéressant de noter que sur cent ouvertures de comptes destinés a priori aux paris sportifs ou au poker, trente-quatre

se tournent aussi vers l’hippique. J’ai la conviction que notre diversification contribue à rehausser l’image du pari hippique en le logeant à la même enseigne courses, football, tennis, etc. »

« J’entends souvent critiquer le fait que les sociétés de course augmentent le nombre de courses pour permettre l’organisation du pari mutuel hors hippodrome. C’est inexact. Nous ne faisons qu’organiser la prise de paris sur des courses qui n’étaient accessibles que

sur l’hippodrome, et sur quelques courses étrangères. Cela ne peut que plaire à la clientèle régionale. »

« En 2008, le PMU a versé aux sociétés de course 736 millions d’euros, et en 2011, 876 millions, mais les charges ont crû. Cette année, nous gelons les charges, tout en maintenant l’effort sur l’informatique (on a eu deux pannes notables inadmissibles à mes yeux), la publicité, les nouvelles activités et l’établissement d’une vraie relation avec la clientèle qui nous

distingue d’autres opérateurs. Notez en passant que le nombre des points de vente est passé récemment à douze mille, ce qui est bien. »

Quittons pour conclure le côté professionnel de Philippe Germond. Marié, il est père de quatre filles de 23 à 12 ans.

C’est un sportif et un mélomane. Côté sport, ski hors piste (il a débuté à trois ans, c’est incitatif ! ) et golf, ce dernier à haut niveau (handicap à un chiffre) ; mais « Je ne fais plus de compétition, c’est trop long, quatre heures

environ. En revanche, j’aime beaucoup boucler un dix-huit trous en deux heures et demie avec un copain. »

Philippe Germond aime toutes les musiques. Je suis d’une grande curiosité, je navigue sans problème de la côte Bach Mozart Beethoven au rivage Armstrong, soul, rapp, chanson. »

On retrouve bien là le coté amoureux du changement d’un président décidé plus que jamais à réussir son passage à ce poste désormais très reluqué ! n

Philippe Germond: ‘Establishing a true working relationship between the PMU and its customers is vital’Daniel Lahalle meets a serene but vigilant PMU President

Philippe Germond is the sixth President of the PMU. Or rather the fourth, as the first two were merely presidents of the

management board and of the managing committee. At that time the PMU did not exist as a legal entity, it was only the accounts service for the Parisien racing authorities.

It’s likely no one in the wider public knew of M. Pietri, a former Minister and the first PMU President, nor his successor, M. Voizard, even though he had previously served as Governor General of Morocco.

The first President to become well known was the third, Andre Carrus. With presidents Blot, Farges and Bélinguier, the PMU entered into a presidential regime. Today, in the fourth year of the Philippe Germond era, the PMU is an autonomous enterprise, an Economic Interest Group, working with and for the governing bodies of trotting (Cheval Francais) and horseracing (France Galop).

Today’s PMU President, Philippe Germond, plays an influential role in the future of French racing. A fifty-something graduate of the ‘Ecole Centrale’ and holder of a Masters Degree from Stanford University in the United States he began his career with Hewlitt-Packard in 1980.

He made rapid strides up the management ladder. Some 12 years later he was appointed Managing Director of the company’s southern European division. He subsequently managed other major companies, notably SFR, Alcatel and Atos Origine and in April, 2009, he became the fourth boss of the Presidential era of the PMU.

“The two topics I am most passionate about in my professional life are marketing and information technology,” says Philippe Germond. “The PMU Presidency incorporates these two centres of interest. When I accepted this Presidency, on the horizon was the launch of online gambling, the perfect union

of marketing, technology and international negotiations. This was a truly exciting prospect, so I was lucky to arrive at the helm of a company undergoing a complete evolution.”

A little over three years later the start of online gambling has been hailed as positive, although it was, understandably, viewed with a certain amount of trepidation by some of the directors of French racing.

The PMU needed to adapt quickly and smartly and Germond, not for the first time, underlined the quality of staff that he found at the PMU. “I continue to work with the same pivotal employees who were in place when I arrived, and I was impressed by the commitment they have shown to the company and the effort they have put in to ensure its success.

oNLINe gAmbLINg“The opening of online gambling involved

setting out on a new strategy which had two aims: First, to ensure the growth of betting on horseracing, which must remain the PMU’s main shop window, and second to succeed in our diversification with all that entails in terms of organisation of people and technology.

“It was a case of mission accomplished as at the end of 2011 there was a 4.5 per cent growth in betting on horseracing and we are now the second-highest operator for poker and the fourth-highest for sports betting.

“The first quarter of 2012 followed in the same vein. It’s interesting to note that of 100 accounts opened mainly for betting on sports or on poker, 34 were also aimed at horseracing.

“I’m convinced that our diversification is contributing to extending the image of betting on horseracing by grouping it with football, tennis and other sports. I often hear criticism that the horseracing authorities are increasing the number of races to enable the PMU to increase online betting away from the

racecourse. That’s not the case. The PMU only organise the taking of bets for those who are unable to make it to the racecourse in person, and on a number of international races. That can only please our regional customers.

“In 2008 the PMU gave €736 million to the horseracing authorities, and in 2011 we gave €876 million, but the charges grew. This year we have frozen the charges, while at the same time maintaining our efforts on the technical front, although we suffered just two notable breakdowns, which were unacceptable in my eyes.

“We have put a great deal of effort into advertising, new activities and the establishment of a true working relationship with our customers, which is vital and sets us apart from other providers.

“It’s also worth mentioning that the number of points of sale recently broke the 12,000 mark, which is a good thing for our customers and for the PMU.”

Away from his professional side Germond is a married father of four daughters aged between 12 and 23. He is sports mad, enjoying off piste skiing which he took up three years ago, and golf which he plays to a high level with a single figure handicap.

But he reports: “I no longer compete in golf competitions because it takes up too much time – around four hours. In contrast, I love getting round 18 holes in two-and-a-half hours with a friend.”

Germond loves a wide spectrum of music. “I’ve got a varied curiosity and appetite for music and can switch without any problem from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to Louis Armstrong, soul, rap, and ballads.”

The PMU President is clearly in touch with modern day life and with his betting customers and he’s intent on succeeding in his vital role in this much-prized position. n

L’Arc de Triomphe est né en 1920 de l’imagination fertile des dirigeants de la société d’encouragement et…de la première guerre mondiale. La

fin du conflit amena les responsables à vou-loir créer une grande course internationale sans surcharge ni décharge autre que le poids pour âge et le poids pour sexe, ou-verte aux trois ans et à leurs aînés.

Il faut dire qu’à l’époque les grandes épreuves françaises étaient réservées aux che-vaux nés et élevés en France, protectionnisme bien admis alors. L’intronisation d’une épreuve internationale était une importante évolution.

Deux questions se posaient : comment appeler la course et où la situer dans le calen-drier. Au lendemain de la guerre, l’épreuve ve-dette inter-promotions était le Prix du Conseil Municipal (aujourd’hui Conseil de Paris) et se disputait le premier dimanche d’octobre.

Il fut rapidement adopté de disputer l’Arc au lieu et place du Conseil Municipal que l’on dé-calerait d’une semaine, au second dimanche d’octobre donc.

Il restait à lui trouver un nom. Il y avait des partisans de « Prix de la victoire ». Le secrétaire général, René Romanet-Riondet, suggéra que l’on n’optât pas pour un titre qui pourrait frois-ser certains participants à venir en leur rappe-lant de trop mauvais souvenirs, et suggéra Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Bien lui en prit car aujourd’hui les relations franco-allemandes sont au beau fixe, et de-puis la guerre deux chevaux allemands ont remporté la course.

Jusqu’aux années soixante dix, toutes les grandes courses du programme français étaient exclusivement financées, via le PMU ; par la Société d’Encouragement. Dont les res-sources ne permettaient pas d’atteindre les sommets d’allocations souhaitables pour que l’Arc de Triomphe conserve une place dans le top trois des épreuves les mieux dotées au monde.

C’est alors que le directeur général, Jean Romanet, eut l’idée de trouver un sponsor. C’est ainsi que l’Arc devint le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Trusthouse Forte. Quand cette cé-lèbre chaîne d’hôtels anglaise se désista après quelques années de soutien appréciable, elle fut immédiatement relayée par la chaîne Ciga dont l’hôtel Meurisse était le plus célèbre fleuron, et la course devint le Ciga Arc de

Triomphe. Quand Ciga connut de sérieux pro-blèmes et disparut de la scène, c’est le groupe Barrière qui prit la suite, et la course s’appela Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barrière. Enfin, au terme d’un soutien de plus d’une décen-nie, la chaîne déclara forfait, et c’est le Qatar qui prit la suite.

Le sponsor prolongea, en mai 2010, son soutien officiellement jusqu’en 2022, ce qui est un record de durée. La suite des événe-ments prouve que ce n’était qu’une première étape dans les investissements qatariens en France, car le Qatar a ensuite acquis la majo-rité du PSG, sans oublier le handball parisien et la création d’une chaîne de télévision mul-tiple, Bein sports, qui groupe plusieurs canaux pouvant diffuser simultanément des matches différents.

Le palmarès de l’Arc est riche d’anec-dotes, d’étrangetés, d’inattendus mêlés à de grands favoris, d’exploits en tout genre. Voici quelques exemples :

Si Comrade, gagnant du premier Arc, n’a laissé aucun souvenir, son successeur Ksar, (1921 et 1922), premier réalisateur de la passe de deux, devint un grand chef de race. Lauréat en 1930 et 1932, Motrico est le seul à avoir fait la monte une saison entre ses deux succès.

Corrida (1936-1937) est la seule femelle à avoir réalisé la passe de deux. Les autres réali-sateurs de cette passe de deux sont Tantième

(1950-1951), Ribot (1955-1956) et Alleged (1977-1978).

Pour l’anecdote, signalons que Ballymoss gagna de trois longueurs en 1958 sur une piste marécageuse alors que son entraîneur Vincent O’Brien avait dit que le cheval avait horreur du lourd (Qu’est-ce que ça aurait été s’il avait apprécié le lourd, écrivait le lende-main Jean Trarieux dans le Figaro).

Le vainqueur de 1975, l’allemand Star Ap-peal est célèbre pour avoir battu le record de la cote (plus de 120/1), celui de 1966 , Bon Mot, a été monté par le plus jeune jockey vain-queur d’Arc, Freddy Head (18 ans), et la jument Urban Sea , gagnante de l’Arc à cinq ans en 1987 est devenue la plus grande poulinière de tous les temps : mère de Galileo, Sea The Stars et quelques autres champions. Elle mérite bien une mention très spéciale.

Une autre mention spéciale très méritée : Sea Bird, vainqueur en 1965. Battu à deux ans dans le Grand Critérium parce que son jockey s’était laissé endormir, il finit invaincu sa cam-pagne de « trois ans », ridiculisant l’opposition dans le Derby d’Epsom, le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud et l’Arc. Les distances affichées à l’arrivée de l’Arc ne l’avaient jamais été auparavant.:

Six longueurs , cinq longueurs. Le second, Reliance, invaincu jusqu’à l’Arc, serait passé pour un grand crack s’il n’était né la même an-née que Sea Bird. n

The Famous History of the ArcDaniel Lahalle tells the story of France’s most famous race, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe was created in 1920 through the fertile imaginations of the Directors of the Société d’Encouragement and the First World War. The end of the conflict encouraged

those in power to create an important race on an international stage without any weight allowances or penalties, other than those allotted for weight and age, open to horses aged three years old and over.

It is important to note that, at the time, the major races in France were reserved for French-bred horses so the creation of an international race was a significant step forward.

Two questions remained to be answered: Firstly, what to call this new race and secondly, where to place it in the racing calendar? At the end of World War One, the most important race in France was the Prix du Conseil Municipal (now known as the Conseil de Paris) and was held on the first Sunday of October. It was decided to hold the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in place of the Conseil Municipal, which was instead pushed

back a week to the second Sunday in October, following the Arc.

There was considerable discussion concerning the name of the race. Certain people were in favour of the ‘Prix de la victoire ‘ but the Secretary General, René Romanet-Riondet, argued against opting for a title that could evoke sad memories and discourage possible participants from taking part.

Instead, he wisely suggested the title, the ‘Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.’ It was a much more appropriate name for the race, as today relations between France and Germany are better than ever and since its inception two German horses have won the race.

Up until the 1970s, all the major French races were financed, through the PMU, by the Société d’Encouragement. The prize money available was insufficient for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe to feature among the top three richest races in the world. The Chief Executive, Jean Romanet, came up with the idea of finding a sponsor for the race.

So the Arc became the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Trusthouse Forte. When this famous chain of hotels decided to end their sponsorship agreement a few years later, their

place as title sponsor was taken by another hotel chain and the race was thereby known as the Ciga Arc de Triomphe. Ciga unfortunately encountered some serious business problems and disappeared from the scene to be replaced by the Lucien Barrière Group, and the name was changed once more to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barrière.

and when it came to an end it was the country of Qatar who took over the baton. In May 2010, Qatar announced that they would be extending their official sponsorship agreement until 2022, which is a record duration for an international sporting event. Events that followed proved that this was not to be the only Qatari investment in France. Qatar has since acquired a majority share of the football team PSG, plus the Parisien handball team and created a television sports channel, Bein Sports.

The roll of honour for the Arc is rich in anecdotes, stories and surprises. Here are a few examples:

Despite Comrade, winner of the first ever Arc, not being very memorable, his successor Ksar,

achieved the first-ever double (1921-1922) and was a true champion. Successful in 1930 and 1932, Motrico is the only horse to have stood at stud as a stallion in between his two wins.

Corrida (1936-1937) is the only female to have won the race twice while other horses to accomplish the double include Tantième (1950-1951), Ribot (1955-1956) and Alleged (1977-1978).

Ballymoss won by three lengths in 1958 on a swampy track, despite his famous trainer Vincent O’Brien having declared pre-race that the horse hated heavy ground. “How far would he have won by had he liked heavy ground?” wrote Jean Trarieux in le Figaro the next day).

The 1975 winner, the German-trained Star Appeal, is famous for being the longest priced winner at more than 120-1 and in 1966 Bon Mot was ridden by the youngest ever jockey to win an Arc, Freddy Head, at the age of 18. The mare, Urban Sea, winner of the Arc at the age of five in 1987, became one of the most famous broodmares of all time by going on to produce Galileo, Sea The Stars and other great champions at stud.

She truly deserves her place as the conclusion to this brief history. n
