Introduction to Moths

There are more than 2,500 species of moth in the UK, found everywhere, from the sunny seaside to freezing mountain tops. Nine hundred are classifi ed as macro-moths and the rest are usually smaller, micro-moths. Over 60 species have gone extinct in the last 150 years.

There are many myths about moths that can distract us from the important role they play in our ecosystem, but in fact:

Mae gwyfynod o fwy na 2,500 o rywogaethau i’w cael ledled y DU, o lannau’r môr i gopa’r mynyddoedd. Perthyna 900 ohonynt i ddosbarth y macro-wyfynod, tra ystyrir y lleill yn fi cro-wyfynod. Difl annodd mwy na 60 o rywogaethau dros y 150 mlynedd diwethaf.

Er gwaethaf y chwedlau sy’n dibrisio pwysigrwydd gwyfynod yn ein hecosystem, y gwir amdani yw:

1Many moths are colourful, beautiful and fascinating

Some, such as the Elephant Hawk-moth are very vividly coloured. Many, such as the Garden Tiger have fascinating patterns that have evolved to aid camoufl age.

Some moths may look dull at fi rst glance but they are actually masters of disguise. The Buff-tip convincingly mimics a broken twig to blend into its surroundings.

2 Moths have many things in common with butterfl ies

Although most are nocturnal, there are many more moths fl ying about in the daytime than butterfl ies. The Cinnabar moth is commonly mistaken for a butterfl y.

Some moths like the Six-spot Burnet have club-like antennae like butterfl ies but feathery or fi ne feelers are more common.

3 Less than 1% of UK moth species can eat clothes or natural fi bres

Almost all the others feed on plants.

4 Moths are very importantMoths are an essential part of the

food chain, for birds, bats, hedgehogs and amphibians. Moths are also pollinators. Without this service many wildfl owers would be unable to reproduce.

Moth declines indicate changes in the environment that will have a negative impact on bigger creatures.

To secure a safe future for us and all wildlife, we need moths.

1Bod llawer ohonynt yn brydferth liwgarMae rhai, megis Gwalchwyfyn yr Helyglys,

yn llachar eu lliwiau. Mae rhai, e.e. Teigr yr Ardd, yn gwisgo patrymau hudolus a ddatblygodd i greu cuddliw.

Mae rhai sydd ar yr olwg gyntaf yn ddifl as yn feistri cuddwisg. Mae’r Blaen Brigyn yn ymdoddi yn y cefndir trwy ddynwared brigyn torredig.

2 Mae llawer gan wyfynod a philipalod yn gyffredin

Er bod y rhan fwyaf yn effro liw nos, mae llawer mwy o wyfynod na philipalod yn hedfan yng ngolau

dydd. Camgymerir Teigr y Benfelen yn aml am löyn byw.

Mae antenâu rhai gwyfynod ar siâp pastynau, tebyg i rai’r pilipalod, e.e. y

Bwrned Chwe Smotyn; ond mae teimlyddion mân pluog yn fwy cyffredin.

3 Llai nag 1% o wyfynod y DU sy’n bwyta dillad neu ffi brau naturiol

Mae’r lleill i gyd bron yn ymborthi ar blanhigion.

4 Mae gwyfynod yn hanfodol bwysigMae gwyfynod yn ddolen anhepgor yn y

gadwyn fwyd i adar, ystlumod, draenogod ac amffi biaid. Mae gwyfynod yn beillwyr hefyd. Oni bai am eu gwaith nhw, byddai llu o fl odau gwyllt yn methu ag ymuosogi.

Mae pob dirywiad yn niferoedd gwyfynod yn arwydd o newid yn yr amgylchedd a fydd yn effeithio’n niweidiol ar greaduriaid mwy.

Mae angen gwyfynod arnom i sicrhau dyfodol diogel, i ni ac i bob rhywogaeth ym myd Natur.
