SOMMAIRE


1 January 2011 was a milestone in the history of Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia, which spans more than a decade.

From eight partners we went down to three that day:

AZTI-Tecnalia, NEIKER-Tecnalia and TECNALIA Research & Innovation, the latter being the result of the merger between eight Technology Centres.

We have also grown in size. The Corporation is made up of more than 1,800 people who are fully commit-ted to Innovation and Technology.

And within the Corporation, the three partners share an innovating operational model based on sectorial Business Units.

Our high transversality enables us to face complex challenges in modern-day society: sustainability, digitalisation, health, business competitiveness in a globalised world, and the conservation of natural resources.

In this new stage our commitment will continue to be oriented towards the economic and social development of our society, and towards the improvement of the quality of life of its citizens, by fostering and developing R&D&I.

Le premier janvier 2011 fera date dans l’histoire de la trajectoire de plus d’une décennie d’existence de la Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia.

A ce moment, nous sommes passés de huit à trois associés dans la Corporation:

AZTI-Tecnalia, NEIKER-Tecnalia et TECNALIA Research & Innova-tion, fruit ce dernier de la fusion de huit Centres Technologiques.

Notre envergure a également changé, nous avons grandi. La Corporation est formée de plus de 1 800 per-sonnes totalement engagées dans l’innovation et la technologie.

Et, dans le cadre de la Corporation, les trois associés partagent un modèle de fonctionnement novateur, basé sur des unités d’affaires sectorielles.

Avec une forte transversalité à l’adresse de la résolution des défis complexes, tels que ceux auxquels la société doit faire face aujourd’hui: la durabilité, la numérisation, la santé, la compétitivité des entreprises dans le contexte de la mondialisation ou la préservation des ressources naturelles.

Dans cette nouvelle étape, notre enga-gement restera dans le développement économique et social de notre société et l’amélioration de la qualité de vie de ses citoyens grâce à la promotion et au développement de la R & D & I.

UNE NOUVELLE ÉTAPE

Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia was established in 2001 and its main aim was to contribute to the develop-ment of an economic and social environment by using and promoting Technological Innovation, by means of the development and dissemination of Research in an international context.

This Strategic Alliance started from an initiative by Inas-met, Labein and Robotiker, who decided to join forces in order to expand the horizon so that Tecnalia could increase competitiveness on the market and achieve:

- Critical mass to compete

- Specialisation in Market and Technology

- Technological Excellence

- Integrated and Multi-disciplinary projects

- Added value for clients, proven by business results or society’s welfare.

The initiative was also attractive to other technology centres in the proximity, and new members continued to join.

Today, it is made up of the following technology centres: Azti, Neiker and TECNALIA Research & Innovation.

La Corporation Technologique a été fondée en 2001 avec pour objectif principal de contribuer au développement de l’environnement économique et social grâce à l’utilisation et la promotion de l’innovation technologique, à travers le déve-loppement et la diffusion de la recherche dans un contexte international.

Cette alliance stratégique est apparue à l’initiative d’Inasmet, Labein et Robotiker, qui ont parié sur l’union des efforts afin de parvenir à une plus grande dimension pour permettre à Tecnalia de disposer de niveaux de compétitivité supérieurs sur le marché et d’atteindre :

- La masse critique pour concurrencer

- La spécialisation dans le marché et la technologie

- L’excellence technologique

- Des projets intégrés et multidisciplinaires

- L’apport d’une valeur croissante pour le client, qui se reflète dans ses performances commerciales ou le bien-être de la société

L’initiative a aussi été intéressante pour d’autres centres technologiques du même environnement et de nouveaux membres l’ont rejointe en continu.

Aujourd’hui elle est constituée par les centres technolo-giques: Azti, Neiker et TECNALIA Research & Innovation.

At Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia we are aware that our challenge as a Corporation and company is also an opportunity. In the present economic climate, the promotion of innovation is a strategic factor and we focus our energy on this. We do not like to leave anything to chance, and this can be seen every year in the figures herein. These figures reflect the commitment and enthusiasm of people who are devoted to their work; where individual effort combines to produce ongoing improvement in our Corporation’s results.

Because when we start adding up, we observe with great satisfaction that Tecnalia’s figures continue to improve, which proves our high competitiveness and good health. And thankfully, this is not a matter of luck.

Chez Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia nous sommes conscients du fait que le défi que nous devons relever en tant que Corporation et en tant que société est une chance en même temps qu’un challenge. Dans le contexte économique actuel, l’engagement envers l’innovation est un facteur stratégique, et nous le faisons de notre mieux. Par conséquent, nous ne voulons rien laisser au hasard, ce qui peut être observé chaque année dans les chiffres présentés dans ce rapport. L’ensemble reflète l’engagement et l’enthousiasme d’un personnel attaché à son travail, où la somme de chaque effort individuel se traduit dans une amélioration constante des données qui donnent leur aval à notre Corporation.

Il en est ainsi parce que, une fois que nous commençons à faire des comptes, nous remarquons avec satisfaction la façon dont les chiffres de Tecnalia ne cessent de s’améliorer, tout en indiquant la forte compétitivité et la bonne santé de notre Corporation. Et cela, heureusement, n’est pas une question de chance.

In 2010, Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia developed unique technological innovation projects that brought the best out of each one of the people who took part in their execution. Because our basic aim is to achieve the most extraordinary ideas.

4. “MeteoClim”The climate and its consequences have become general interest topics for all citizens. Tecnalia has launched an initiative entailing the development and application of systems that enable better knowledge of the present and future atmosphere in the Basque Country.This system will also help to face all kinds of environmental challenges that may arise.

1. “Smart Energy City Sisak”L’environnement et les conséquences du changement climatique sont des domaines où Tecnalia développe divers projets. À Sisak (Croatie), Tecnalia travaille afin d’établir une stratégie globale pour réduire la consommation globale d’énergie urbaine et améliorer l’environnement des habitants.Une initiative qui vise à devenir un cas pionnier pour l’ensemble du pays.

In Sisak (Croatia) Tecnalia is working to establish a global strategy that reduces total consumption of urban energy and improves the natural surroundings of citizens.An initiative that aims to become a pioneering case in the country.

2. “Superturbines”As a response to the complex situation of the environment, the development of renewable energy is in full force. In this field Tecnalia is looking for a solution to generate renewable energy by means of superconductivity. This would mean a technological leap for future offshore wind turbines, thus enabling higher power without sacrificing performance.

3. “K-Egokitzen”Energy optimisation will contribute to slowing down seemingly inevitable climate change. With the idea of minimising its consequences, Tecnalia is developing a program for administra-tions and public bodies to

7. “eID card”One of Tecnalia’s principles is to promote social development and the improvement of people’s quality of life through companies.In this field, Tecnalia has developed a platform that facilitates the use of digital services for the elderly. The system is based on a digital network that promotes the participation of elderly people in the InformationSociety, particularly in services that involve the use of the eID Card.

8. “The Factory of Software”Regarding finance, Tec-nalia has launched a joint initiative withBanco Popular to develop a product to provide an innova-tive multi-domain solution in software production, thus increasing its quality and productivity. The project includes from the technical design stages to the deploy-ment of the end product and production management..

9. “Mobile Super Prosumer”This initiative is about involving mobile phone users in the creation and distribution process of contents for other phones.The aim is to stop users being mere consumers and

to turn them into produc-ers, suppliers and consum-ers of all kinds of contents and services, to get them involved in the system.

5. “Eguraldia24”La première chaîne théma-tique météo en HD, avec une production entièrement automatisée et à bas prix. Le contenu de la chaîne est généré automatiquement 24 heures sur 24, dans un environne-ment virtuel, fournissant des informations météorologiques et maritimes complètes.La chaîne est opérationnelle depuis novembre 2010.

6. “On Appétit” Dans le domaine de la restaura-tion, Tecnalia a développé une «carte virtuelle» qui permet aux convives de voir le menu dans leurs assiettes. Le système projette la nourriture dans l’as-siette et la sélection est faite par les clients de façon gestuelle et intuitive. L’initiative offre une interaction complète entre l’utilisateur et la carte. Sa tech-nologie permet des applications futures dans d’autres domaines, telles que l’éducation de la petite enfance ou le marketing.

7. “Carte nationale d’iden-tité électronique”L’un des principes de Tecnalia est celui de promouvoir, à tra-vers les entreprises, le dévelop-

pement social et une meilleure qualité de vie des personnes.Dans ce domaine, Tecnalia a développé une plate-forme qui facilite l’utilisation des services numériques pour les personnes âgées. Le système est basé sur un réseau numérique qui favorise la participation des per-sonnes âgées dans la société de l’information, en particulier en ce qui concerne les services impliquant l’utilisation de la carte nationale d’identité électronique.

8. “The Factory of Software”Dans le domaine financier, Tec-nalia a entrepris une initiative conjointe avec le Banco Popular pour développer un produit qui offre une solution innovante et multi-domaines dans la produc-tion de logiciels, tout en aug-mentant la qualité et la produc-tivité. Le projet s’étend de la phase de conception technique au déploiement du produit final et la gestion de sa production.

9. “Mobile Super Prosumer”Cette initiative consiste à impli-quer l’utilisateur d’un terminal mobile dans le processus de création et de distribution de contenus à d’autres terminaux.L’objectif est que les utilisa-teurs ne soient plus de simples consommateurs et deviennent aussi des producteurs, des fournisseurs et des consom-mateurs de tous les types de contenus et de services, tout en s’impliquant avec le système.

5. “Eguraldia24”The first HD weather channel, with fully automated low-cost production. The channel’s content is generated auto-matically 24 hours a day, in a virtual environment, offering comprehensive weather and maritime information. The channel has been operational since November 2010.

6. “On Appétit”Within the field of hotel & catering, Tecnalia has developed a “virtual menu” that displays the menu on diners’ plates. The system projects the food on the plate and diners can intuitively select it with gestures. The initiative provides full interaction between the user and the menu. Its technology enables other future applications in other fields, such as child education or marketing.

considerably reduces the cost of physical tests. The Dynacarproject is complemented with a real electric vehicle, Dynacar2, the validation platform to carry out tests and verify data obtained in the simulator.

10. “Plasmapour”Pendant le processus de coulée, l’un des plus grands défis est celui d’homogénéiser la température du métal fondu dans son récipient. Dans ce domaine, Tecnalia a développé un plasma thermique de haute puissance qui permet de chauffer la quantité de métal nécessaire, à la température précise et au bon moment de la coulée. Ces caractéristiques en font une révolution majeure dans le processus de fonte.

11. “Robot de manipu-lation par câbles”Dans les bâtiments industriels et entrepôts, l’assemblage, le stockage et la distribution des matériaux est un processus complexe. Tecnalia développe actuellement un robot de manipulation suspendu par des câbles, qui permettra de manipuler et de déplacer des charges très lourdes d’un point à un autre. Le système permet un contrôle total sur la trajectoire de la charge et une grande flexibilité pour le configurer dans n’importe quel environnement.

12. “Dynacar”Dynacar est un simulateur en temps réel, capable d’interagir avec les gens, dans ce cas appliqué au développement des véhicules électriques. La quantité d’informations qu’il fournit le rend unique, car cela réduit considérablement le coût économique des preuves phy-siques. Le projet Dynacar est complété par une vraie voiture électrique, le Dynacar2, la plate-forme de validation pour faire les essais et vérifier les don-nées acquises par le simulateur.

10. “Plasmapour”During the melting process, one of the most important challenges is to achieve a homogeneous temperature of the melted iron inside the container. In this field, Tecnalia has developed high power thermal plasma that enables the heating of the required amount of metal at the exact temperature and right at the time of casting. Because of these features, it is an important revolution in melting processes.

11. “Handling ro-bot with cables”In industrial buildings and warehouses, assembly, storage and distribution of materials are complex processes. Tecnalia is currently developing a handling robot suspended by cables, which will enable handling and moving very heavy loads from one place to another. The system enables full control over the path of the load and high flexibility to configure it for any environment.

12. “Dynacar”Dynacar is a real-time simulator, able to interact with people, applied in this case to the development of electric vehicles. It is unique thanks to the amount of informa-tion it provides, because it

14. “Higea”: advances in ingredients to improve food and healthThis project has enabled the successful generation of knowledge to obtain new ingredients and food matrices that help to reduce food-related illnesses. In this field, new products have been developed, which stand out because of their nutritional quality, and go even further by carrying out nutritional intervention studies in animal and human models. The protective effect against infections and prevention of obesity have been scien-tifically proven in some of the developed products.

15. “Biomolecules obtained from microalgae”The survival of some animal and vegetable sources that are currently used to obtain certain biomolecules is questioned. Therefore, alternative bioproduction systems are being worked on, such as microalgae, to obtain compounds deriving from their secondary metabolites.Dynamic cultivation techniques are used, based on monitoring and control of variables that indicate the physiological condition of these organisms, which determine the final

productivity of biomolecules. As well as cultivation conditions, the biosynthesis of these compounds depends on the activity of certain enzymes of the metabolic pathway, regulated by gene expression. Therefore, work on the regulation of specific genes is being carried out, causing controlled alterations of the biosynthetic pathway in order to improve the production of relevant biomolecules.

16. “LOREA”, an effective tool for managing the coastThe development of specific tools enables the management of the impact of pollution caused on the land or in the sea.Monitoring, controlling, in real time if possible, and predicting the behaviour of the coastal environment are the great challenges of Operational Oceanography applied to the management of bathing waters, rescue operations in coastal areas, etc., which can be mitigated by developing tools like LOREA which help to manage our coasts.

17. “Soil Health Cards (Lur-ONA)”Based on the knowledge in the field of (micro)biological health indicators, a com-

mon tool is designed for the different agents involved in the management of agroe-cosystems (farmers, cattle farmers, engineers and politicians) which enable them to assess, in a practical way and with the required scientific rigour, the impact of different activities on the health of the soil, within the framework of sustainability.

14. “Higea”: des progrès dans les ingrédients pour améliorer l’alimentation et la santé.Ce projet a permis de générer avec succès des connaissances pour l’obtention de nouveaux ingrédients et de matrices alimentaires pour aider à réduire les maladies liées à l’alimenta-tion. Dans ce cadre, nous avons réussi à développer de nou-veaux produits qui se démar-quent par leur qualité nutrition-nelle, ce qui va encore un peu plus loin ; grâce à des études d’intervention nutritionnelle dans les modèles animaliers et humains, il a été possible de prouver scientifiquement l’effet protecteur contre les infections et la prévention de l’obésité de certains produits développés.

15. “Biomolécules obtenues par des microalgues”La survie de certaines sources d’origine animale et végétale, qui sont actuellement utilisées pour l’obtention de certaines

13.“Strategic Sectorial Observatories”Tecnalia is developing several projects in the search for competitive improvements in companies through technology.In this case, in collaboration with the Clusters and the Basque Government, Tecnalia has developed a strategic intelligence system that boosts competitiveness of companies by means of internal innovation. This support programme monitors, predicts and identifies the technology needs of each client and helps to identify business opportunities.

13.“Observatoires Stratégiques Sectoriels”La recherche de l’amélioration de la compétitivité des entre-prises à travers la technologie est un domaine où Tecnalia développe plusieurs projets.Dans ce cas, en collaboration avec les Clusters et le gouvernement basque, Tecnalia a développé un système d’intelligence stratégique qui stimule la compétitivité des entreprises par l’innovation interne. Ce programme de soutien supervise, prévoit et identifie les besoins technologiques de chaque client, en aidant à identifier les opportunités d’affaires.

17. “Cartes de Santé des Sols (Lur-ONA)”À partir de la connaissance dans le domaine des indica-teurs (micro)biologiques de la santé des sols, un outil commun est conçu pour les différents acteurs impliqués dans la gestion des agroécosys-tèmes (agriculteurs, éleveurs, techniciens et politiques) qui leur permet d’évaluer de façon pratique, et avec la rigueur scientifique nécessaire, l’impact des différentes pratiques de gestion sur la santé des sols, dans le contexte de la durabilité

biomolécules, est question-nable. C’est pour cela qu’on travaille avec des systèmes de bioproduction alternatifs, tels que les microalgues, pour l’obtention de composés dérivés de leur métabolisme secondaire. Des techniques de culture dynamique sont utili-sées, basées sur la surveillance et le contrôle des variables indicatrices de l’état physiolo-gique de ces organismes, qui déterminent la productivité finale de biomolécules. En plus des conditions de culture, la biosynthèse de ces composés dépend de l’activité de certaines enzymes de la voie métabolique régulées par l’expression des gènes. C’est pour cela qu’on travaille sur la régulation des gènes spécifiques qui provo-quent des changements contrô-lés de la voie de biosynthèse, qui permettraient d’améliorer la production de biomolécules d’intérêt.

16. “LOREA” ,un outil efficace pour la gestion du littoralLe développement d’outils spécifiques permet de gérer les impacts de la pollution d’origine terrestre ou maritime.Surveiller, contrôler, si possible en temps réel, et prédire le comportement de l’environnement côtier sont les défis majeurs de l’océanographie opérationnelle appliquée etans LOREA à la 16

20. “ArmAssist”It is a low-cost portable device to rehabilitate upper limbs in patients who have suffered neuromuscular diseases or ictus.The system uses a mobile base to record shoulder and elbow movements, and monitors patients’ improvements. There is a tele-rehabilitation platform that enables the real-time connection with the therapist to correct possible errors.

18. “Deuxième Chance”L’infarctus du myocarde et d’autres pathologies liées au système cardio-vasculaire s’accroissent considérable-ment avec l’augmentation de l’espérance de vie. Après avoir subi une crise cardiaque, l’implantation d’un stent aux ar-tères coronaires est fréquente. Dans ce domaine, Tecnalia travaille sur le développement de biomatériaux appliqués aux stents qui permettront une amélioration des traitements cardiovasculaires, avec l’aug-mentation de la qualité de vie chez les patients ayant souffert un infarctus du myocarde.

18. “Second Chance”The risk of heart attacks and other heart diseases increases with longer life expectancy. After a heart attack, a stent is usually inserted in the coronary arteries. In this field, Tecnalia works to develop biomaterials applied to stents, which improve cardiovascular treatments, thus increasing the quality of life of heart patients.

19. “Natural Additives”A project focusing on obtaining non-toxic natural additives from vegetable and fruit sub-products. The initiative aims to find a technical and economically feasible alternative to current additives, most of which are chemical.The project also includes the assessment and subsequent reuse of waste and sub-products from fruit and vegetable crops by means of emerging sustainable technologies.

19. “Additifs Naturels”Projet axé sur l’obtention d’additifs naturels non-toxiques à partir de sous-produits frui-tiers et horticoles. L’initiative cherche une alternative techni-quement et économiquement viable aux additifs actuels, pour la plupart d’origine chimique.Le projet comprend également la valorisation et réutilisa-tion ultérieure des déchets et des sous-produits des cultures fruitières et horticoles grâce à des technologies émergentes et durables.

20. “ArmAssist”Il s’agit d’un dispositif por-table à bas coût pour la réhabilitation des membres supérieurs chez les patients ayant souffert une maladie neuromusculaire ou un AVC.Le système utilise une base mobile pour enregistrer les mouvements de l’épaule et du coude, et permet de mesu-rer les progrès du patient. Il dispose d’une plateforme de télé-rééducation, qui per-met sa connexion en temps réel avec le thérapeute pour corriger les possibles erreurs.

Two years ago, at the height of the financial crisis, Corporación

Tecnológica Tecnalia launched the Aukera initiative, aimed at supporting companies with 50% of the cost of subcontracting new R&D&I projects from any of their centres. The aim: for no good ideas to go to waste because of the financial crisis.

Il y a deux ans, coïncidant avec le pic de virulence de la crise écono-mique, la Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia a lancé l’initiative Aukera, qui vise à soutenir les entreprises en finançant 50% du coût de l’externa-lisation des nouveaux projets de R & D & I dans n’importe quel de ses centres. Le but : qu’aucune bonne idée ne reste sans être développée à cause d’une période de crise.

In collaboration with ADEGI and the Chamber of Gipuzkoa, an event aimed at finding solutions and new market opportunities through technological development of products and services took place.

PLUGINTEK was developed in an innovative format that combined conferences, workshops and exhibitions, facilitating attendee participation.

PLUGINTEK s’est développé dans un format innovant qui combinait des conférences, des ateliers et des expositions, tout en facilitant la participation de tous les participants.

More than 300 companies, mainly SMEs, took part in PLUGINTEK.

International Campus of Excellence

The aim of the Euskampus project, which started up as an addition to the UPV/EHU (University of the Basque Country), with the Fundación Donostia Internacional Physics Center (DIPC) and Corporación Tecnológica Tecnalia, with the slogan “One University, One Country, One Campus”, is to make the UPV/EHU one of the best universities in Europe.

5th TECNALIA

JOURNALISM AWARD

Journalists from the Heraldo de Aragón newspaper, the regional TV channel Telemadrid and TV3’s news portal 3cat24.cat have won the 5th Tecnalia Journalism Award, worth 15,000 euros, distributed into three categories: Newspapers, Radio/TV, and Internet. There was also a special mention for Cadena SER-Euskadi.

Ve PRIX DE JOURNALISME TECNALIA

Les journalistes de l’Heraldo de Aragón, de la chaîne de télévision régionale Telemadrid et du site d’actualités 3cat24.cat, de TV3, ont remporté le Ve Prix de Journalisme Tecnalia, d’une valeur de 15.000 € répartis en 3 catégories: Medias écrits, Radio/TV et Internet. Il y a aussi eu une mention spéciale pour Cadena SER-Euskadi.

A NEW STAGE BEGINS

On 11th April 2011, Javier Ormazabal was appointed Chairman of the Fundación Tecnalia Board of Trustees, replacing José Mª Echarri, who was appointed Honorary Chairman. Jon Azkue was also appointed Vice-Chairman, Iñaki San Sebastián was appointed Secretary, and new members of the board were selected.

The new board expressed their gratitude and congratulated the outgoing members on their great commitment and work developed to build up the Corporation.

UNE NOUVELLE ÉTAPE COMMENCE

Le 11 avril 2011, le Patronat de la Fundación Tecnalia a nommé Javier Or-mazabal nouveau Président, ce dernier succédant à José Mª Echarri, nommé Président Honoraire. Jon Azkue et Iñaki San Sebastián ont également été désignés Vice-président et Secré-taire, respectivement, tout comme les nouveaux administrateurs du Patronat.
