HALO CEO

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh.

Marhaban yaa Ramadan, we embrace the holy month with noble acts of worship. Alhamdulillah, on this blessed occasion, we are

gathered to rejoice in this month of glory, month of holiness, month of giving, and month of forgiving. This Ramadan 1440 Hijri, muslims are obligated to fast, abstaining from certain provisions that the Quran has otherwise allowed, for the sake of God.

For everyone at WIKA, there are virtues of Ramadan that we can learn from. I would like to invite our dear readers on a trip back in history, remembering the time of the Battle of Badr, one of the most important battles in the Prophet Muhammad’s fight against the oppresion of the Quraysh tribe.

The Islamic defense, consisting of only 313 fighters, unexpectedly beat a whole army of 1300 fighters. The valuable lesson that we can draw from this is that it was the holy month of Ramadan when the Prophet Muhammad and his followers were on the battlegrounds, and they had to refrain from food and drink in amidst the battle.

What is the lesson that we can draw from this in relevance to the goodness transformation? It is clear that Ramadan is not a hindrance. Humans, God willingly, can go multiple times beyond his own ability when he believes in God, and welcomes God in every aspect of his life, his services, and even his work. Devoting ones’self whole-heartedly to God during Ramadan, will guarantee that you can go beyond your limits even when fasting.

Wishing you all the blessings for this Ramadhan 1440 H. Wabillahi taufik wal hidayahWassalamu’alaikum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh.

Before entering deeper into questioning the existence and roles of reservoirs today, it would be better if we look into this literature. As a tropical country, Indonesia has a relatively high rainfall. However, this does not occur year-round. Around 80% of water is available when the wet season occurs in a relatively short time (around 5 months). Conversely, only 20% water is available when the dry season occurs in a

relatively longer time (around 7 months).

In reference to this, one should not be surprised when contradiction often arises. In the wet season, the water potential in rivers often overflows and flooding occurs in many areas. Some of the water is wasted due to the lack of proper and integrated water management. Meanwhile during the dry season, drought frequently occurs due to the lack of available water.

To balance the role and function of water in every season as mentioned above, the construction of reservoirs is important as a tool for water management. Reservoirs are effective means to mitigate floods and irrigation water for farming. Moreover, they provide water for households, cities, and industries.

Further, the problem that people should focus on must not only be the issue of flooding. The public should also understand the ever-increasing need for water every year.

To avoid water crisis, the government under President Joko Widodo has overall acted swiftly by increasing the number of dam developments or reservoirs. The government realizes that reservoirs are one of the sources for water that sustains the livelihood of all living beings and socioeconomic activities of a community. Reservoir or lake water can be utilized for drinking water, hydroelectric plants, fishing, and more.

The next challenge is how this “important message” can be delivered well to every stakeholders using water and they ought to also give insightful feedbacks in water consumption.

INFRASTRUCTURES

HEAD OF STATE, NAWACITA, AND DAMS

The development of dams is included as an attempt or activity that is estimated to have an important impact on the environment. Why? The reason is simple, that development is an activity that modifies the land or landscape and exploitation of sources of water. This process and activity can influence sociocultural aspects and the technological application that has real consequences to the environment.

This cause and effect relationship is well understood by President Joko Widodo. Through Nawacita (nine agendas) in the total development of the whole Indonesia, the seventh Indonesian president is determined to increase the national competitiveness that aims to provide welfare for people in terms of food security, water security, and energy security.

This is shown by the plan to build 65 dams during the 2015-2019 period. In details, 49 dams are new projects, and 16 dams are follow-through projects. Furthermore, the investment cost reaches Rp 82.5 trillion that comes from the APBN (State Budget).

During the 2015-2019 period, the government has built 57 dam units and nine of them are completed. Until the end of 2019, a targeted 65 units are being built. Meanwhile, retention basins built during the Jokowi era numbered in 949 units with a new irrigation network reaching 860.015 hectares and irrigation rehabilitation reaching 2.32 million hectares.

The development of new dams in the Jokowi era has added the capacity to 2.11 million square meters and added irrigation reservoirs of 160.000 hectares wide. The 3.02 square meters per second of water produced can be utilized for hydroelectric plants with a power potential of 145 megawatt.

WIKA MILESTONE AND DAM DEVELOPMENT

Momentums should not be waited, but momentums should be created. This thinking is felt relevant with the relationship of water crisis due to the lack of available reservoirs. As a national contractor, PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. (WIKA) has understood well before the strategic importance of reservoirs.

WIKA began its existence from the business of electrical installation for housings and offices in the early 1960s. After enduring the national political crisis in 1965, young engineers at WIKA felt motivated to expand the business beyond electrical installation that had become its core. Suklan Sumintapura in the 1970s sat as the Deputy Director and was the one to spark this optimism.

Slowly but surely, WIKA entered the civil construction field and housing development. Although considered a juvenile in the area of those two businesses, WIKA was trusted as a contractor for prestigious projects such as the Proyek Jalan Lintas Sumbawa (Projaliwa) or Sumbawa Road Crossing Project, Proyek Pembangkit Listrik Asahan or Asahan Power Plant Project, Pemasangan Jaringan Listrik Bendungan Sigura-gura or Sigura-gura Dam Electrical Grid Installation and the construction of its

are experienced as Dam Project Managers in Aceh, NTT, and NTB. However, back then the government was not really focused on dams. Now, in the Jokowi government era from 2014-2019 they have built 65 dams with a total cost of up to Rp 70 trillion, with a water capacity up to 19.1 billion cubic.

From those 65 dams during 5 years, from 2014 to 2019 a total of 56 dams have been realized and auctioned by PU (Public Works). WIKA in that era obtained 16 dams or more than 20%. Especially in 2018, we obtained 5 out of 8 auctioned dams that year. I think it is the most out of all State-Owned enterprises.

In 2019, the government will still build nine dams. They are planning in 2020 onwards there will be more dams to build, due to 20% of Indonesia’s irrigation are from dams. By having dams available, it will help national irrigation. Every year the needs for irrigation increases. If in 2019 the needs is 139.000 hectares, then it will continually increase, and the needs for dams will never cease.

WiKA DOES MOSTIN ALL STATE-OWNED ENTERPRiSES(IN CONDUCTING DAM DEVELOPMENT)

Dams truly are gigantic projects. The structures are big, its involved human resources in developing it are in massive numbers, the water volume contained is high, the vastness of farming lands that are going to be irrigated are unimagined, the potential electrical energy generated is

also astounding.

How does WIKA eventually interpret the dam projects as projects that can stimulate the company’s revenue as well as a means for young WIKA engineers to continually create innovations? The following is a portion of the interview conducted by WIKA Magz Editors Deby Sulistiowati, Anditya Angwarmase, and Fekum Ariesbowo with Operations I Director Agung Budi Waskito in his cool office a few moments ago:

What is your point of view about the dam development infrastructure in this country? 10 years ago, today, and 10 years in the future? And how can WIKA optimize this opportunity?

ABW:

In the past 10 years, WIKA had mastered the field of dam construction and development. As we all know WIKA officials

MAIN SCOOP

staff housings. There were also other projects under WIKA, namely PLTA Garung, PLTA Tenggari, Bendung Klambu, Pengelolaan Air Bersih Plaju (Plaju Clean Water Treatment) and PLTU Ombilin.

In reference to the said milestone, WIKA clearly has an extensive experience in the field of dam building. This experience is upgraded with technological proficiency, project management, and the support of the best young engineers, WIKA today frequently talks about national dam projects.

In the last five years, no less than five major dam projects have been achieved. Mentioning a few such as Paselloreng Dam in Wajo, Keureto Dam in North Aceh, Tugu dam in Trenggalek, Karian Dam in Banten, including also Kuwil Kawangkoan Dam in North Minahasa.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WIKA INTANGIBLES

The incredible success that WIKA has attained in regards to large dam projects are strongly connected to the long history that shaped and developed WIKA until reaching this point. Thus was the outline of Rhenald Kasali’s analysis in his book titled Myelin Looking through the Endeavours of The Largest Construction State Owned Enterprise.

He believed that the ever-innovating reputation that WIKA carries is not built solely from promotion, but also from hard work, increase in quality and value system.

The legacy of the founding fathers and prior leaders of WIKA in the form of discipline culture, intrapreneurship, knowledge

management, value creation, and expansion discipline that have bonded one WIKA generation to the next. This legacy becomes even clearer in its benefits because in practice, the majority of WIKA employees realize and are willing to optimize their intangible assets in the form of innovation and new skills.

Agreeing with Rhenald’s view, Kazuhiko Otani, the General Manager of Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd is not surprised by the achievements of the WIKA team in the Large Dam Construction Project today. From his viewpoint, WIKA is the best national contractor who knows how to optimize its engineers’ militancy and intelligence to innovate in times of crisis. However, there is one thing that still makes Mr. Otani curious.

“With all the success achieved by WIKA today and

specifically in the context of dam megastructure

constructions. Will WIKA dare to enter a new quadrant

as operator and maintenance?”

Mr. Otani believes that the role as OM (Operator and Maintenance) is the foundation for future dam megastructure businesses in the future. The expertise in this field is still rare in Indonesia although there are many great infrastructures being currently developed, but would later malfunction due to poor scheduled maintenance. Will WIKA dare? Let time and innovation answer.

Fekum Ariesbowo

How did you address the dam as a multi-year project and its influence on WIKA itself in relation to the placement of its engineers?

ABW:

Dams should be multiyear; the fastest would take 3 years to build. The first year is the design and area preparation. The remaining 2 years is used for development, because a dam needs to go through two dry seasons. So at least 3 years is needed, even some need more than that. For it is impossible for the construction to be done in one dry season, everywhere else in the world is the same as it would take at least 3 years.

With WIKA’s engineering capacity, it should pose no problems. On the contrary, I believe that with the support of BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, WIKA is able to accelerate the work from the determined target.

Expertise on the latest technology combined wtih the excellent work method, makes WIKA Indonesia’s most advanced contractor company in the building of Dam infrastructure. The word Dam, in the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), is a noun that is interpreted as a construction built to withstand water turning it into a reservoir, lake or a recreational area. The dam is often used to channel water into a hydroelectric power plant.

Countries with large rivers like Indonesia, some dams operate and form a transportation system, as in an irigation infrastructure where the water level is lower than the land that is intended to be irigated. The more complex, the direction that the dam has to reach, the larger the dam needs to be.

In short, dams are among human’s best inventions that should be acknowledged. How does WIKA construct this engineering marvel? Following is a brief article, a gigantic water barrier contructed by the best engineers.

The water collected in this dam is then channeled to four sub-districts in the Wajo Regency with as much as 305 liters / second. The Passeloreng Dam also has the potential of becoming a water resources conservation area, for freshwater fisheries and tourism development.

As a national strategic project, the construction of the Passeloreng Dam has received a considerable amount of attention from the Government. President Jokowi himself has reviewed the construction several times, with the

last visit taking place in July of 2018. The President expects the existence of this dam can help stimulate food self-sufficiency in Indonesia.

During the construction of this dam, WIKA applied the use of flow concrete in casting the tunnel concrete lining. This method was chosen to compromise for the limited space in casting with conventional slump concrete. In addition, in terms of quality, time, cost and safety, this way is far better compared to other methods.

TRENGGALEK’S POTENTiALS

GROOMING TO SUPPORT

Completed phase I of the construction, WIKA proceeds to phase II of the Tugu Dam constructions.

The Tugu Dam, with a pool capacity of 41,7 hectares and a height reaching 89 meters from foundation, this is one from the 65 dams proclaimed by the Governement through the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing in order to ensure national water and food security.

Throughout the course of time, WIKA has successfully constructed the first phase of the Tugu Dam with a central core rockfill tipe dam that covers diversion structures, the main dam, coffer dams, relocated

This dam is expected to be the water infrastructure that will support farming activities, flood control, and water supply

for the people of North Aceh.

To optimize agriculture, irigation, and a control over rainfall volume in the Northern Aceh surrounding regions, the government came with the initiative of building the Keureuto Dam. A randomfill type dam with a height of 386 m/74,00 m. The Keureuto Dam was designed to have a capacity of 215,94 million cubic meters with a pool in the size of 836,39 hectares.

This dam functionsas a reservoir to store flood water in the size of 30,50 miliion cubic meters and can reduce up to 50 years of flood excess volume. Water that is stored in the Keureuto Dam will be stored as raw water, to be treated at 500 liters per second, at the Regional Water Utility Company (PDAM) in Tirta Monpase, North of Aceh.

This dam is expected to function also as a Hydro Electric Power Plant producing 6,34 megawatt (MW) of power to be distributed to North Aceh region.

The construction process of this dam was divided into 3 packages, with APBN funds as much as Rp1,7 trilion. Package I went to PT Brantas Abipraya - PT Pelita Nusa Perkasa (KSO) contructing the main body of the dam. Paket II went to PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk constructing the tunnels (diversion waterway), intake and hydromechanical and Package III went to Hutama Karya - PT Perapen (KSO) building the spillway.

This success has led WIKA to earn the trust in constructing phase II of the Tugu Dam, in a joint operation with Apta covering the main dam embankment work, which is the continuation part of the Tugu Dam construction in order for it to be operational in the year 2021.

The Tugu Dam is intended to supply the rising raw water needs of the Trenggalek Regency of East Java, due to the lack of water infratructures. The construction of this dam is part of the series of activities for the development of the Ngrowo River Sub Basin and the Brantas River that holds water flowing from the Keser River, a large nearby river that is often the cause of floods in the Trenggalek area.

The Tugu Dam is expected to bring welfare to the people of the Trenggalek Regency and its surrounding regions. With dam being fully functional, it is targeted to provide 400 liters/second of water, to 8 thousand people in 3 villages, channeling into the 1.200 Hectare irrigation area of Ngasinan, produce 0,4 MegaWatts of hydro electric power, reduce the amounts of flood, and possibly serve as a tourist site.

KNOWLEDGE 10

Rain has become the capital city’s regular occurrence. Just imagine, rain can happen during morning, afternoon, or even at night. Based on observations made by BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency), rain and extreme weather are predicted to happen in Jakarta and its surrounding area until January.

Heavy rainfall, according to BMKG, is caused by nature wherein an uplift takes

place in the troposphere layer from 13 km to 17 km. Due to this, the community has to be aware of any recurring extreme weather. The most feared aftermath from it is flooding.

Flooding is the scourge of the wet season. One of the efforts to minimalize and manage flooding to turn it into energy is by building a dam. This concrete dominated infrastructure is made to withhold/contain water as well

as control the water flow for farming irrigation.

Today, a dam’s main function also evolves following the context of the present needs. Dams today are also used as hydroelectric power generators in accordance with the socioeconomic dynamics. For this edition of TEN, WIKA Magz presents the 10 world largest hydroelectric dams.

Itaipu is one of the largest hydroelectric dam in the world that restricts the Parana River (a river between Brazil and Paraguay). The construction of this dam was a response to the fast growing economy of Brazil during the 1960s. The dam has a length of 7.235 meters with a peak elevation of 225 meters. This dam’s hydroelectric capacity, with its total use of concrete that could be used to build 210 Gelora Bung Karno class stadiums, reaches 14.000 MW.

From South America, The Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant ranks the second largest concrete construction after the Itaipu Dam. It was built to withhold the flow of the Caroni River, which extends from Bolivia to Venezuela. Just like Itaipu, Guri (as it is called by the Bolivian public) also has a wide building span of 7.426 meters in length and 162 meters in peak elevation. Meanwhile, the installed electrical capacity reaches 10.055 MW or a third of the present national electrical needs.

3SIMON BOLIVAR HYDROELECTRIC PLANT (GURI DAM)

This dam has one of the largest hydroelectric capacity in the world located in Brazil. Built in Para province, where the thick Amazon rainforest is also located, Tucurui’s construction began in 1975 as a hydroelectric power plant that takes advantage of the volume and strong current of the Amazon River. It took less than 9 years to build the reservoir with a width of 3.014 m2. Additionally, in less than 3 decades after it was officially operational, the Tucurui Dam consistently produces 8.370 MW every year.

4TUCURUI DAM

This is arguably the largest dam ever made by man. Built in Sandouping, Yichang, Hubei province, China, the Three Gorges Dam is designed to contain the Yang Tze river (the world’s longest river. Red) which passes into three canyons between the cities of Yichang, Hubei, and Fuling, Chongqing. The dam can store 39.000 m3

of water or the equivalent of the Toba lake water volume. With such a large capacity, the total hydroelectric capacity generated by the dam reaches 26.516 MW. An incredible figure since it would be more than enough to provide electricity for the entire Indonesian archipelago.

As a superpower state, The U.S advances thanks to the support of its manufacturing industries. In accordance to that, the energy needs also increases. Answering to the needs of the market, the Grand Coulee Dam was built to restrict the Columbia River in Washington DC. The hydrokinetic power from the dam successfully generates a power of 6.809 MW.

Not wanting to be outdone by its American competitor, Russia also built a dam that is no less impressive. The Yenisei River, which is the longest river in Russia, is contained to produce 6.400 MW of electrical energy. In August 2010, the dam and turbine exploded. As a result, the electricity in Saint Petersburg and Moscow was shut down for a few hours. Traffic, flight, and manufacture also halted.

China as a new giant never stops in developing mainstay infrastructures and manufacturing industries. This dynamics is visible in every provinces, especially in Nanjing. As a result, the electrical energy needs in the region also increases. To answer this, the Chinese government has built the Longtan dam to generate 6.300 MW of energy. Not only answering the energy needs of industries, the dam was built to raise the water surface for the ideal and safe shipping line.

This particular dam is the second largest in Russia after the Sayano Shushenskaya Dam. Needing 8 years in its construction, the Krasnoyarskaya Dam stands firm in holding the Yenisei River at the 30-Kilometer point from its upstream in Divnogorsk City, south of Moscow. Its 6.000 MW input generated by this dam is largely used for aluminium processing industries.

Canada is known for its 1.000 rivers. With that, Canada has a large hydrokinetic potential. Unsurprisingly, the Canadian government takes advantage of it by building various power plants. One of the dams that is optimized for that purpose is the Robert-Bourassa Dam located in northern Quebec. This infrastructure was built in 4 years (1974-1978) to control the flow of La Grande River that spans 97,6 km from its upstream in Quebec. The electrical energy generated by the dam is as much as 5.516 MW.

Still in Canada, the Churchill Falls Dam is designed to produce electrical energy by taking advantage of the strong falls current that are commonplace in Canada. The stronger the falls current, the bigger the power to generate turbines. So is the stable process resulting in the production of abundant electrical energy. Managed by a well-known hydroelectric company, Hydro-Quebec, the Churchill Falls Dam has a power output of 5.429 MW.

Asmat 's Million Enchantments,

OFFER COUNTLESS PLEASURES.

Situated on the eastern end of Papua, the Asmat district continues to develop its region, optimizing it with natural and cultural tourist destinations.

As the cold seeped to the bone, WIKA Magz was en route to Terminal III of the Soekarna-Hatta International airport via the inner city toll road, last Monday (11/2). That night, the strong winds and heavy rain didn’t stop us from making our flight to eastern Indonesia.

During the first week of the 2nd month of 2019, we were faced with an extraordinary

agenda that would have been a shame to miss. This was WIKA’s coverage of its CSR day in the district of Asmat, West papua, and also the district of Mimika, where Papua was the main attraction. Every year, during the anniversary of its establishment, the company holds a routine charity to provide for those in need.

Carrying on in the spirit of its slogan “We Power the Nations’, the 2019 CSR emphasizes on its program of distributing books and a variety of other programs (WIKA Pintar, WIKA Sehat, WIKA Hijau, dan Wika Peduli) to 5 main islands and 9 outer, foremost, and isolated districts. Asmat, located in the west Papua province, was one of the areas that had been selected. One of the factors for Asmat’s, selection was because in 2018 was affected by malnutrition and a smallpox epidemic.

At 8 PM, the wheels came to a halt as we arrived at the entrance to Terminal III, the biggest airport in the country. We were welcomed with light rain as we hurried out of the car carrying a camera, recorder, and notebook, and we could hardly wait to get to the exotic Asmat. It was at exactly 9 PM, when our Garuda Indonesia flight took off towards Denpasar and eventually reached Timika, Papua.

“Thank God, Papua, we have arrived” we exclaimed in our excitement.

THE JOURNEY TO ASMAT WAS FUN!

After 5 hour flight from Jakarta, we finally landed on the Mozes Kilangin airport runway, Timika, at 06.30 AM Eastern Indonesian Time. Even though it was still early in the morning, the heat from the sun was immediately felt. Perhaps it was a sign that we should get a move on to let the day run its course.

Our journey to Asmat was a long one. From Timika we had to take another flight on the Twin Otter aircraft towards the Perintis Ewer airport, which was the main airport used to enter the Asmat district. Long story short, we moved to the smaller part of the Mozes Kilangin airport to catch our connecting flight to Asmat.

Honestly, there was a sense of wonder, astonishment, and pride, all in one breath, as we entered the waiting room at the airport. Instead of seeing the usual attire than one would wear at an airport, the passengers we saw were only wearing shorts, sleeveless t-shirts, and sandals. This was unexpected and made colorful entries on the pages of our note books.

Another interesting point that filled page two of our pocket books was the check in process, which was a lot more manual when compared to similar check ins at other airports. As our names were called,

we were required to stand on scales along with our cabin luggage. This was quite an experience.

The flight to Papua was one that everyone should experience. For the people of Papua, taking a flight was not something that was uncommon. For them, taking a flight was as common as taking a city transport (Angkot). For regular Papuans, walking to the airport, catching a flight, arriving at the destination, and walking home, was a regular commute.

Due to a lack of transportation, a plane was the main choice of travel connecting the various cities in Papua. This applied not for just travel between district capitals, but sub-district capitals as well. In several mountainous areas of Papua, the local children would be more excited to see a car rather than a plane. Planes could be seen every day, cars couldn’t.

After, give or take, an hour of waiting. The Perintis airport official made a loud announcement that our propeller powered plane was ready to take us to Agats. At around 9.30 in the morning, we were already sitting on the plane that had a capacity for 20 passengers. The interior was simple, something that one would expect to see on a bus. On the left there were 5 single chairs whilst on the right there were 6 two person seats. In the back row there were seats for 3 people. In the front, the pilot and co-pilot were seated and the cockpit could be clearly seen as there was no separator between the cockpit and the cabin.

AGATS, THE ALLURING CAPITAL OF ASMAT

After three quarters of an hour in the air, the wheels of the twin otter aircraft that we were on touched down at Ewer airport, which was the entrypoint to Agats, Asmat’s capital.

From that little airport situated on the bank of a river, we had to take a small speed boat towards Agats. The boat could fit a maximum of four passengers and one driver across the brown colored water at high speed. The air was hot, and the sun was shining brightly. Fortunately, on the boat, we could feel the breeze which made up for the intense heat.

TRAVEL

The natural charm and culture of Asmat is one of the appeals for anyone who comes to visit. Even though it isn’t fully developed, this does not pose much of a problem and instead creates a sense of intrigue for anyone who wishes to experience Asmat up close:

Thirty minutes went by quickly as the Agats harbor, which we could see in the distance, became clearer and bigger as we reached our destination. The team in charge of WIKA’s road rehabilitation and suspension bridge construction for the handling of malnutrition and the smallpox virus outbreak were there welcoming us with open arms.

We were instantly touched and overwhelmed with pride as Indonesians. Indonesia is a vast country, which is roughly the size of Europe; which stretches from England in the west to Greece in the East. In Papua, the eastern part of our country, the WIKA team was working hard, shoulder to shoulder, to develop infrastructure for the betterment of Papua.

As soon as we disembarked from the speed boat, we climbed the wooden stairs of the dock. Agats is unique. Set on top of swamps, several of the roads of Asmat’s capital were covered by wooden planks. Only the main roads were made of concrete. The roads of layered concrete stood on top of the metal construct that was built over the wooden bridge that was there before.

After our short flight and speed boat ride, the next part of our journey was made on electric motorcycles as we sped towards the project offices. At a glance these bikes we were on looked like regular motorcyles. These bikes were common in and around Agats and they were almost soundless and without any exhaust smoke.

After a 15 minute bike ride on these near soundless vehicles across the asmat swamps, we finally arrived at our destination. There was a familiar sense of family and brotherhood. These were our brothers and sister, the best engineers that WIKA could offer, all of whom were separated from friends and family.

is moving quickly to develop road infrastructure and suspension bridges to handle the small pox and malnutrition crisis that is affecting the area.

Bordering the Mimika district in the west as well as the Mappi and Boven Digoel districts in the south, the area is covered in muddy swamps. It doesn’t come to a surprise that the houses, as well as the connecting roads, have all been constructed on top of wooden and steel planks.

Over the decades, the conditions of the plank roads, weathered by the rays of the sun and rain, which had withstood the weight of many electric bikes, have come to the point where they needed to be replaced with sturdier concrete roads.

In accordance with qualification evaluation, technical and administrative procedures, pricing as well as evaluations made by the ministry of Public works and housing (Direktorat Bina Marga Balai Besar Pembangunan jalan Nasional XVIII), WIKA was selected to construct the vital infrastructure needed in Asmat, with the job

of building concrete roads (slab piles) and a 72 meter suspension bridge under the HK.02.03/PJN – WIL.IV/PPK-IV.3/466 contract.

The rough terrain and vast area directly affects the infrastructure construction process of the roads in Asmat. Eko Suranto Putro, the project manager of road and bridge contruction, stated that there are three main challenges that need to be overcome in order for this project to be completed in time.

First of all, the swamp area that covers almost the entire area makes it difficult to supply the area with clean water.

The second challenge that WIKA faces is the transport of precast concrete from PPB WIKA Concrete Pasuruan (where the concrete is produced) to the Asmat area

The third challenge, in relation to the distribution of precast concrete from the production area in Pasuruan by taking advantage of the river to transport it all the way to the Asmat district. However, it turns out that the river is quite shallow and heavily relies on the tidal current and as such, only smaller capacity boats can get through to the area.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Did Wika give up on its endevours? No, we didn’t. The project management, with the support of the young engineers (average age of 25) were able to come up with creative innovations.

To tackle the problem of clean water for the purposes of making the concrete casts, the project management created rainwater storage

ponds that were spread evenly across all project locations. Besides this, as an alternative, the team were also able to purchase clean water from other districts by boat.

The transport of precast materials from PPB WTON Pasuruan to Asmat was solved by cooperating with ships that were transporting salt to the eastern provinces of Indonesia using cargo ships that had a capacity of 2.400 tonnes, straight to the port of Agats.

On arrival, the precast material were moved first to the Landing Craft Tank that then went down the river towards the project areas. It should be noted that the unloading was not done during normal hours, instead, the heavy precast materials were unloaded outside of normal loading areas, which was 2 O’clock in the morning.

To answer how the heavy precast material was transported over the softer grounds, th WIKA management implemented two effective methods.

Firstly, for the empty areas, WIKA used excavators by placing wooden foundations on the excavator tracks. Secondly, the project team initiated the construction of a portal that is able to operate on steel tracks (tracks attached to poles that have been set up).

The construction done in inland Asmat clearly shows WIKA’s determination to develop Indonesia. Through the construction evenly done in the isolated, foremost and outermost parts of the Agats district, WIKA encourages the Asmat community to become more independent, competitive, and synergized, so that it eventually becomes self sustainable.

KELUARGA CEMARA

BY AVRIL LAVIGNE

BY J.K ROWLING

Does anyone remember the TV Series from the 90s, ‘Keluarga Cemara’? by Yandi Laurens, the story of Abah, Emak, and Euis is being brought back to the Indonesian cinema.

Consistent to the earlier TV Series plot, the feature film ‘Keluarga Cemara’ released early in 2019 , is packaged in a modern dan fresh, nowaday setting. There are many instances that are relevant to everyday life today.

Telling the story of Abah (Ringgo Agus Rahman), Emak (Nirina Zubir), and their two children, Euis (Adhisty Zara) and Ara (Widuri Puteri), faced with a situation where Abah is drawn into a case of fraud involving his own colleague, turning their lives upside down.

Stripped of their wealth and the house being foreclosed, they were forced to move into their grandfather’s home in Bogor. Abah had to move to a new job, Euis had to move schools and adjust to her new surroundings, this is where conflicts arose and caused their lives to take a different turn.

In a twist of fate, through their simple and modest ways, the came across the true meaning of family life, and that family will always be there for you unconditionally. The ‘cool headed’ director, Yandi, has succeeded in creating a film from such a simple and light script and transforming it into an emotional ride filled with warmth and loving.

Close to the heart of many Indonesians, Keluarga Cemara manages to stay very realistic, and not go over the top, and many life lessons and moral messages can be drawn from this wonderful piece.

Involving a colorful cast of supporting-roles such as Asri Welas, Ariyo Wahab, Gading Marten, Abdurahman Arif, Maudy Koesnaedi, Arswendi Nasution and a few new actors as friends of Euis, this film does not only boast a beautiful drama but it also offers many comedic situations that are very entertaining.

Obviously, this legendary meaningful film is worthy to be on shelves and labeled in the ‘must-watch’ category for many Indonesian families, and it has succesfully carved in our minds that: “Our most treasured possesion, is our family”

TIPS & TRICK

iN TOP CONDiTiONAFTER THE EID HOLIDAYS

Eid al-Fitr is a long-awaited moment, after completing a 30-day fast during Ramadan we tend to lose ourselves during the Eid celebrations. Almost all delicious dishes, from the coconut milk recipes, traditional cookies to various sweet drinks, are consumed instantly without thinking about their future effects to our health.

In almost every household, delicious, sweet and traditional coconut milk dishes are served during the Eid al-Fitr feast, which surely stimulate our taste buds. However, we need to be cautious, behind the pleasures and scrumptious Eid delicacies we ought to stay health conscious.

Why? Because most dishes served during Eid consist of fat and are high in calories. On an average, sweet food does not make you feel full therefore it is easy for us to lose control and forget about the calories our body needs. Limit your indulgence, do not overdo it.

CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH, CARE ABOUT YOURSELF

During Eid many changes in eating habits and activities occur. Various dishes are served, generally prepared with coconut milk, which are actually very high in

cholesterol and fat. Nutritionist, Dr. Leanne, M.Sc., as quoted by Daro Tabloidnova.com, Monday (6/13) suggests that one important thing that we must consider is fat content intake.

“Too much fat can increase the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood and can narrow the blood vessels and arteries, which leads to poor blood circulation. This is what triggers coronary heart diseases,” explains the nutritionist.

According to Leanne developing a healthy diet is key to maintain a healthy balance. A normal diet consists of eating every 3 hours so that the stomach does not stay empty for too long. In between the main meals, you can eat fruits or snacks.

It’s no secret that every time Eid al-Fitr takes place, in almost every household a complete variety of delicacies and drinks is served. The challenge is how to still be able to gather and reunite with family, and still maintain a healthy balance.

Of course we are allowed to consume various treats during and after Eid, yet it is advisable to cut on the fatty ones, for example ‘Opor’. Don’t take too much of the coconut milk broth, and don’t go for the chicken skin. Drink lots of water. “This will reduce the earlier mentioned food supply because the stomach has trimmed,” suggests Leanne logically.

When there is a buffet, Leanne advises to choose the food that contains the least amount of fat. “If there are vegetables, go for the vegetables. Avoid the sweet treats especially those who suffer from blood sugar disease. If there are no options, take some, but not too much. You can enjoy some cake or cookies too, but remember to eat less of the other sweet treats,” she adds.

Behind the pleasures and the scrumptious Eid delicacies, we must keep in mind to stay healthy and fit.

Consuming fruits is also advisable, because they contain vitamins and minerals. We still have to be cautious since there are sweet and non-sweet types of fruits. The sweet ones contain fruit sugar (fructose) which can trigger a rise in the blood sugar. For the non-sweet ones, the levels of fructose are less, especially when you consume them including the skin so the sugar absorption is not too high.

For those with diabetes, go for the less sweet fruits high in fiber, such as apples, star fruit, or oranges. Sugar-rich fruits include sapodilla and melons. Also go for the treats that are less sweet and contain less fat.

Another important point, Leanne suggests, is to weigh yourself before and after Eid and see how much you have gained. Then put effort to lower it back to your initial weight.

CONSUME HEALTHY FOOD

It is unavoidable to consume food high in cholesterol during Eid. That is why we must limit the intake of food that decorates the dining table. Back at home, try to limit food high in cholesterol, high in sugar and also those high in purines.

CHECK YOUR HEALTH

After your road trip, it is best to do a health check-up. There are several common diseases that occur after Eid, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, ulcers, diarrhea or decreased health conditions. In addition, do not hesitate to immediately consult a doctor if you experience health problems after the Eid holiday, especially after a long road trip from home town.

DON’T FORGET TO EXERCISE

True sport can be done anytime and anywhere. When your body starts to ache during the bus or train ride, you can do some light exercise such as stretching. Upon arrival don’t forget to continue practicing this good habit.

Sports that are recommended to maintain stamina and to stay in shape are aerobics exercises. This type of exercise keeps the oxygen content in the body steady. Examples of aerobics are walking, running, cycling or swimming. Exercise at least 3 days in a week for a duration of 30-60 minutes a day.
