Scott Robinson Honda is using a solventborne low VOC basecoat system at their facility in Torrance,California. How on Earth is that possible, you ask, with all of todays

environmental rules and regulations, especially in Califor-nia? Thanks to BASFs OnyxHD system, shops are nowable to use a low-VOC solventborne paint. The product of-fers the best of both worlds: faster dry times of traditionalsolvent paint and a low impact on the environment.

There are so many situations where the drying times for water limits what you can do, said Henry Martinez, paintshop manager for Scott Robinson Honda. Everybody isretrofitting booths to dry water, and the solvent doesntneed any help. Its just designed to evaporate.

Scott Robinson Honda had been using BASFs R-M Dia-mont basecoat since 2007, and the brand eventually gar-nered the Onyx name. Because of their loyalty to the brand,

the shop was granted the opportunity to test out the newproduct in February 2013, and Martinez jumped at thechance. Rather than doing a complete 180-degree switchfrom waterborne to solvent, Martinez ensured the transitionwas a gradual one.

We started using it side by side with the waterborne

system, he said. It was a test product, so we would shootit for a little while and then we would be off for a week.

Switching to the solvent-based system ultimately im-proved the shops drying time by at least 50 percent, ac-cording to Martinez.

For some of the guys, all they know is the waterborne sys-tem. They were cautious, said Martinez. But after the firstinitial shock of it, they fell right in line and loved it.

Until its July 2013 release to the general public, the newlow-VOC Onyx system was a test product. Scott RobinsonHondas high standards offered great feedback during thetest period.

[BASF was] still tweaking it for a couple months, but withtheir final product, which they just introduced to the public, there were no big hurdles, said Martinez. It shoots the wayits supposed to, its drying the way its supposed to, and if we run into a problem inside the booth, its an easy repair. It

doesnt hold you up that muchminutes, if anything.

    Reduced Cycle Time

Getting things done quickly and efficiently is a huge priorityfor many shops, and Scott Robinson Honda is no different.By switching to the Onyx system, Martinez says his shop hasbeen able to greatly reduce its cycle time.

Theres less pressure because were always fightingagainst the clock. Theres a focus on getting the

cars out of the shop as fast as possible, so ithelps to be more productive and get your

scores down. I cant stress enough howmuch faster things get.

Overall, Martinez is satisfiedwith the product, which has

resulted in the use of lessequipment and faster flashtimes.

The colors blendwell, he said. Evenwith transparent color, itworks great. [I dont]

need to worry aboutgetting air blowers or fans to move the air. Ireally love this new paintline; it has changed my

work life for the better. ?

When Gregg Nantaiswas offered a chanceto test out a new, low- VOC paint system that promisedresults similar to solvent, he

jumped at the opportunity. The product is BASFs Low

VOC Productive System, whichproduces low-VOC solventbornebasecoats. R-M has the ability tobe either water or solvent, whichmakes it a game changer in theworld of environmentally friendlyautomotive refinishes that, upuntil now, have solely been water-borne. Despite containing sol-vent, the Low VOC Productive

System meets all VOC regula-tions in North America.

    Training

When Nantaiss employees madethe switch to the Low VOC Pro-ductive System, he says thatBASF once again made sure tosupply a thorough training pro-gram so the painters could com-fortably learn the new product

    in-house.

    A Pioneer

While BASF is revolutionary in theautomotive refinish world, Provin-cial Chrysler also boasts a similar

Provincial Chrysler took advantage of R-Ms new low VOC Basecoat System OnyxHD

stature now, as its the first Cana-dian shop to feature the Low

VOC Productive System. We were chosen as a test

shop, and weve been experi-menting with this paint for threemonths now, said Nantais in asummer interview.

Although Provincial Chrysler had been using the product sinceApril 2013, the Low VOC Produc-tive System just officially becameavailable to the public in July.Nantais speculates that the prod-uct will be quite popular.

[BASF] is the only paint com-pany thats launched something

like this, so this is a very huge an-nouncement, he said.

Switching from product toproduct isnt necessarily easy, butProvincial Chrysler proved that itcan be done relatively quickly andefficiently. For shops consideringmaking any sort of switch, whether it be to the Low VOCProductive System or to water-borne in general, Nantais offers

one solid piece of advice: Makesure the employees get theproper training for the producttheyre using, and go with theflow. ?

Hands-on training assisted Provincial Chryslers changover from waterborne to low-VOC solvent.

Provincials employees transitioned quickly and easily through comprehensive in-shop training.

Lots of training made work flow more smoothly through the paint booth.

Y ou could say Joe Townsend is a seasoned collisionrepairer. He has worked at Dunshee Body and Frame inKalamazoo, Mich., for 15 years, the last eight as the gen-eral manager, and in his opinion, he has implemented a prettygood business model thus far.

However, like any business, his shop faces the occasionalproblem. One frequent issue is vehicle damage going unnoticedduring the initial disassembly by his employees. They then dis-cover the damage later in the repair process, which consequentlyresults in setbacks.

When each individual is disassembling their own vehicles for repair, they may not do a thor-ough job, said Townsend. Were battling our-selves trying to get thesecars out of here.

Enter BASFs AdvancedProcess Solutions (APS),a new program for shopslooking to maximize effi-ciency and productivitythrough lean principles.BASFs program has been

in the works for about twoyears now, and Dunsheewas the first pilot shop.

The APS process is allabout identifying all itemsneeded for the repair up frontat the disassembly for repair stage instead of at the later stages of the repair, which causes untimely delays to deliveringthe vehicle, said Townsend, explaining that the ultimate goalof the program is to help shops develop a more efficient stan-

    dard operating procedure.

    Plan for Success

Beginning the APS program required Townsend and hisproduction manager to attend a three-day planning ses-sion at BASF headquarters. This is where APS was tailoredto Dunshees facility and a deployment plan was created. Then, a team of BASF Business Coaches spent a full weektransforming Dunshee with the new APS processes andprocedures.

Theyre helping change the culture of the shop, which is

one of the hardest things to do, said Townsend. Weve gotso many people who have been doing the same thing for somany years.

APS is an ongoing program, so BASF is constantlysupplying input on how to improve Dunshees standardoperating procedures. The shop now holds a weekly

all-staff meeting to discuss any improvements, concerns or new business ideas.

Were looking at putting a team in place so that the wholeshop can work together with a common goal of getting the carscompleted as quickly as possible, which would benefit every-body, said Townsend.

    Standing Out

An added benefit to the APS program is its ability to make shopsstand out from their competition.

Weve been doing thesame thing for so long andweve just been trying tostay ahead of the curve anddifferentiate ourselves, said Townsend. Were anindependent facility, andweve got all these consol-idators out there who arelooking to gobble up themarketplace. We needed

to do something to make ourselves

not only stand out to our customersbut also to our insurance partners.

    Disassembly Team

The days of cumbersome individual disassem-bly are long gone, as Dunshee now has its owndedicated disassembly team comprised of oneestimator and two techs. With a more efficient

procedure in place, Townsend says the business will get toexpand its operating hours.

Well try to go to four 10-hour days for our technicians, he

said. We can have people who will be touching the vehicle from6 in the morning to 6 at night, which will greatly reduce our cycletimes for our insurance companies and our customers.

So far, Townsend seems pleased with the programs results.Although implementing an entirely new process is a somewhatdaunting task, hes optimistic about the payoff.

There have been other programs by other paint compa-nies that Ive seen and been a part of, he said. Theyvetaken the lean aspect from manufacturing and those typesof places, but theyve never really geared it [toward colli-sion]. [BASF] has really given us a blueprint. Theyve given

us the core basic items needed to really be able to do thisprogram.Ive made it clear to our staff that in order to be success-

ful and remain a company in the age of consolidators, wevegot to take it upon ourselves to stay profitable and continueto thrive. ?

Tearing the Old Way DownTeardowns were giving Dunshee Body and Frame fits and negatively impacting productivity. Then BASFs Advanced Process Solutions Program came in and showed them a new way.
