Nanoscience has been increasingly supportedover the years by the Research Directorateof the French Ministry for Research which

established the National Nanoscience Program, incooperation with the major research organizations(Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - CNRSand Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique - CEA) to whichwas also associated later the Délégation Générale pourl’Armement (DGA) of the French Ministry of Defence.Starting in 2004, this Program led also to the creationof the Competence Centers in Nanoscience, calledC’Nano.

These Competence Centers in Nanoscience bringtogether a large number of researchers from severaldisciplines, and rely on all the locally available meansfor training and specialized technology equipment,necessary for the development of nanoscience andnanotechnology.

By structuring the research community in this booming scientific area, the C’Nano Centers will bethe main contact points for the political and economicplayers, on behalf of the scientific community. By their very structure, they are also in a position to reinforce the bonds between fundamental researchand industrial innovation in a field in which numerousand important economic spinoffs are expected.

Designed to give an overview of the research activities in nanoscience, this CD-ROM includes a brief presentation of the C’Nano and a descriptionof the activities of the laboratories associated to these centers. This description will be regularly updated to take into account the dynamism of the on-going research. I hope that this CD-ROM will provide useful information to all players and decision-makers involved in this field.

Le soutien apporté aux nanosciences par la direction de la recherche du ministèredélégué à l’Enseignement supérieur

et à la Recherche s’est amplifié au fil des années, en concertation avec les organismes de recherche(Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - CNRSet Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique - CEA) puis avecla Délégation générale pour l’Armement (DGA). Il a conduit, dans le cadre du Programme NationalNanosciences, à la mise en place à partir de 2004 de centres de compétence en nanosciences baptisésC’Nano.

Ces centres de compétence en nanosciences regroupentun grand nombre de chercheurs appartenant à plusieursdisciplines ; ils s’appuient sur l’ensemble des moyensexistant dans le domaine de la formation et sur les équipements technologiques de leur environnement proche, qui sont nécessaires au développement des nanosciences et nanotechnologies.

Expression de l’effort de structuration mené dans un domaine de recherche en plein essor, les centresC’Nano ont vocation à devenir les interlocuteurs desacteurs politiques et économiques. Par leur structure, ils sont également à même de renforcer les liensentre recherche fondamentale et innovation, dans un domaine dont on attend d’importantes retombées économiques.

Conçu pour donner un panorama des activités de recherche en nanosciences, le CD-Rom ci-jointcomprend une présentation synthétique des C’Nano et une description des activités des laboratoires associés à ces centres, qui sera actualisée pour prendre en compte le dynamisme des recherches en cours. Ce CD-Rom sera, je l’espère, un vecteurd’informations utile à l’ensemble des acteurs et des décideurs impliqués dans le domaine.

Objectifs et atouts des centres de compétence C’Nano

Les nanosciences et les nanotechnologies s’inté-ressent aux objets et aux phénomènes à l’échelledu millionième de millimètre et révolutionnentdes domaines aussi variés que la conception dematériaux, la microélectronique et les technolo-gies de l’information, la biologie, la médecine etla pharmacologie ; elles apportent de nouvellessolutions dans le traitement des problèmesconcernant l’environnement et les énergies ; ellesoffrent de nouvelles perspectives dans les appli-cations spatiales.

Impulsé par le ministère en partenariat avec leCNRS, le CEA et la DGA, le Programme NationalNanosciences a permis de soutenir la rechercheen nanosciences et le développement des moyenstechnologiques nécessaires. Son comité de coor-dination a encouragé la création de centres decompétence destinés à structurer la recherchepublique à l’échelle nationale afin de développer,dans ce domaine très concurrentiel et en pleinessor, la compétitivité du territoire et son attrac-tivité auprès des chercheurs étrangers et desentreprises innovantes.

Objectives and mainStrengths of theC’Nano CompetenceCenters

Nanoscience and nanotechnology, which dealwith objects and phenomena on the scale of amillionth of a millimetre, are revolutionizing awide range of fields from material design, micro-electronics and information technologies to biolo-gy, medecine and pharmacology, and extendingto the environment, energy and space technology.

The National Nanoscience Program, managed bythe French Ministry for Research in partnershipwith the CNRS, the CEA and the DGA, permittedthe support of research in nanoscience and thedevelopment of the necessary specialized tech-nology facilities. Its Coordination Committeeencouraged the creation of Competence Centersin order to structure public research, ensure thatit enjoys a competitive edge in this booming field,and enhance the attractiveness of France both forresearchers and for innovating companies.

A call for projects led to the selection of 5 regio-nal Competence Centers, starting in 2004.Additional projects, presently under study, willcomplete the geographic coverage of the country.

These Centers are rallying points for the nano-science research community, bringing togetherabout 4000 research scientists, teaching staff andsupport engineers. Because of their considerablesize and the wide extent of the fields they cover,the C’Nano Centers help generate the knowledgeand know-how necessary for the development ofnanotechnology. At the same time they fosterinterdisciplinarity, a feature that ensures therapid convergence that is now needed forresearch in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Un appel à projets a permis la sélection de 5 cen-tres de compétence régionaux ou inter-régionauxmis en place à partir de 2004. D’autres projetsactuellement à l’étude complèteront le maillagedu territoire.

Ces centres fédèrent les laboratoires qui sont à la pointe de la recherche fondamentale en nano-sciences et regroupent près de 4000 chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs et ingénieurs de recherche.Ainsi, par leur taille et l’amplitude des domainescouverts, les centres C’Nano permettent de faireprogresser sur le même front les connaissances etle savoir-faire indispensables au développementdes nanotechnologies en particulier en développantl’interdisciplinarité indispensable à la rapide conver-gence dont les recherches en nanosciences et nano-technologies ont actuellement besoin.

Implantation des centres de compétence C’NanoIle-de-France, Rhône-Alpes (Grenoble, Lyon), Grand Est (Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne,Bourgogne, Franche-Comté), Nord-Ouest (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Bretagne, Pays de laLoire), Grand Sud-Ouest (Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc Roussillon)et Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (under way/en cours de création). 1. The C’Nano are already considered by the regio-nal authorities as the main contacts on behalf ofthe nanoscience research community. They willalso participate in the development of technologi-cal innovation and contribute to the new “Pôle decompétitivité” structures that are presently inpreparation. In carrying out their work, theC’Nano rely on a network of technology resources(National Central Facilities, Local TechnologyPlatforms) which can also serve the local industry.

In this field that holds much promise for tomorrow’sjobs, the C’Nano, associated to the higher educa-tion establishments within their areas, contributeto the development of an offer in high-level trainingin nanoscience and nanotechnology, in particularwithin the framework of Master’s and Doctoratedegrees and European schools organized by thetopmost players at the European level in research,universities and public organizations.

Identifiés par les collectivités locales comme desinterlocuteurs privilégiés, les centres C’Nano ontvocation à devenir parties prenantes des pôles decompétitivité qui se constituent.

Pour assurer leur contribution au développementdes innovations technologiques, ces centress’appuient sur un réseau de ressources technolo-giques, composé de grandes centrales et de plateformes de technologie de proximité, quibénéficiera au tissu industriel environnant.

Dans un domaine porteur pour les emplois dedemain, les C’Nano, associés aux établissementsd’enseignement supérieur voisins, contribuent à développer une offre de formation de hautniveau en nanosciences et nanotechnologies, enparticulier dans le cadre des mastères, des docto-rats et des écoles européennes organisées parles acteurs de la recherche, universités et orga-nismes, les plus performants au niveau européen.

European Collaborations

As the European Union undertakes several initia-tives to create a unified European Research Area,the C’Nano, thanks to their wide representationof the community of research scientists and tea-ching staff, their pronounced interdisciplinarycharacter, the synergy they induce with the indus-trial fabric and their action in terms of training,are in a key position to relay the actions led by ourcountry at the European level.The ERANET project « Nano-Sci-ERA », coordina-ted by France, aims at the harmonization of theresearch policies of the 12 participating coun-tries. In response to one of the objectives of thisERANET and under the auspices of its coordina-tor, the heads of the C’Nano together with thedirectors of these laboratories participated actively in the census of French nanoscienceresearch presented in this CD-ROM.

A l’heure où se développent plusieurs initiativesau niveau de l’Union européenne pour créer unespace européen de la recherche, les C’Nanoreprésentent la communauté des chercheurs etenseignants-chercheurs en nanosciences et sontà même, par leur caractère interdisciplinaire affir-mé, par la synergie qu’ils induisent au niveau dutissu industriel et par leur action en termes de formation, d’être l’un des supports de l’actionmenée par notre pays au niveau européen.Le projet ERANET « Nano-Sci-Era », dont laFrance assure la coordination, vise à harmoniserles politiques de recherche mises en œuvre parles 12 états partenaires. Répondant à l’un desobjectifs de cet ERANET et sous l’égide de son coordonnateur, les responsables des C’Nano ontparticipé activement, avec les directeurs deslaboratoires, au recensement du potentiel derecherche français en nanosciences présentédans ce CD-Rom.
