Further details on visitcharente.com

From the ancient castle where Marguerite de Valois was born to the Romanesque cathedral

dedicated to Saint Peter, Angoulême displays its rich architectural heritage at each street

corner but not only that.A balloon of creativity has landed on the walls of the town, walls “painted” by famous comic strip authors. With its International Festival of the Comic Strip and the museum devoted to the ninth art, Angoulême is a town of Art, History… and comics!

Here the stave splitters, coopers, wine growers, distillers and cellar masters all unite to produce the liqueur of the gods. The town itself as much as its famous eau-de-vie make cognac definitely worth visiting. François 1st was born there, started the trade in salt on the river and brought prosperity to the town. A town rich in heritage and history... to explore!

In cognac country, the rows of vines shape the countryside, follow the valley slopes

right up to the farm gates.

Angoulême, capital of the comic strip.

In red granite, white limestone, historic, protected or listed, set low in a valley or on a rocky

spur, each village has a thousand and one things hidden away to discover as you take a stroll...

Classed among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is packed with riches in the south Charente. But there is also La Rochefoucauld and its castle, Villebois-Lavalette, Tusson, St-Simon, Brigueuil and St-Germain-de-Confolens...

Upstream from Angoulême the Charente resembles Louisiana, with a maze of small branches winding their way through a veritable bayou. After Angoulême, the Charente is tranquil and navigable, dotted with bridges and locks. The former towpaths along the banks are now a delight for ramblers and cyclists. Head for the open air...

The valley of the Charente runs from Angoulême

to Cognac and on to the ocean with a host of

surprises awaiting on the banks.

Cognac, a land of plenty.

Cities and villages of character, route of charm.

• The underground church at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

• The château de La Rochefoucauld

• The 17th century covered market at Villebois-Lavalette

• The medieval monastery garden at Tusson...

Things to see,things to do

The lakes at Lavaud and Mas Chaban, which were created to maintain a steady flow of the river Charente, form the largest freshwater lake in the Poitou-Charentes. There is bathing and all sorts of nautical activities... There is also rambling and cycling on the narrow roads and white paths which crisscross the area, watching the birds by the wa-ter’s edge or admiring the splendid limousine cows in the meadows.

Here is a land of hedged fields and forests of chestnut, ideal for fans of open spaces and fresh air.

The lakes of the Upper Charente,a full-scale playground.

The Charente, a timeless river.
