Having dominated WRC for over ten years, Citroën Racing has made history in the world of rallying. The relentless hard work of this

tightly-knit team – driven by a singular desire to give its best – has brought them rally wins, titles and records.

This season sees quite a few changes, the most visible of which concerns the livery of the works Citroën DS3 WRCs, which now features the colours of Abu Dhabi alongside those of Total, our longstanding partner. Whilst Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena contest their final rallies, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen have been joined by Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio to defend our World Championship titles.

Citroën Racing is also taking part in all the other levels of the sport. In addition to their WRC programme, Khalid Al-Qassimi and Scott Martin are also competing in the Middle East Rally Championship. We are also proud that Robert Kubica and Maciek Baran are part of the Citroën Racing family this year.

This overview would be incomplete if I didn’t mention customer racing, which is one of the cornerstones of our business. Starting with the Junior Citroën Racing Trophy, organised at national level with DS3 R1s, and leading up the Citroën Top Driver series, a benchmark promotional formula held as part of the WRC3, we have built a real driver development structure that will unveil the talented drivers of the future.

WHERE IT ALL BEGINSCitroën Racing has been installed in Versailles, a city known throughout the world, since the end of 2000. Its premises whose dimensions are in keeping with the ambitions of the 8-time World Rally Championship-winning team form its backbone.

The doors of 19 Allée des Maronniers won’t open without invitation because of security and confidentia-lity. The laurels on the facade of the main building are those awarded to the FIA World Champions, and are a reminder of the make’s fabulous results. Before going into the factory itself, visitors pass through a display area where they can see some of the cars that have left their mark on the history of Citroën Racing: the ZX Grand Raid, the Xsara Kit-Car and WRC, the C2 Super 1600 and the C4 WRC.

The design office for chassis and engines is open plan, and it is where the engineers conceive the car’s components. From the overall design down to the tiniest detail, more than 4,000 plans are drawn on the CAO stations when a new car is being made. The calculations department is then asked to validate the dimensions of the parts. Citroën Racing uses the technologies developed by the PSA Group for the stress resistance tests of the materials and fluid mechanics.

In the very heart of the factory, the workshops, laboratories and parts stores take up 10,000 of the 15,000m2 building. The DS3 WRC was born in the plastics technology laboratory in the form of a ¼-scale model, which enabled the team to begin wind tunnel work and to refine the design before buil-ding the full-scale model.

A few metres away the sheet metal laboratory is where the chassis is constructed. Starting with a series production shell the engineers cut, adjust and weld the tubes of the rollcage, the transmission tunnel, the suspension mounting points and the various reinforcers.

Another key area is the engine department, which assembles the DS3 WRC blocks. For the first time in its history Citroën Racing has designed 100% of the components in the engine including the cylinder block made from an aluminium billet. Around two weeks are necessary to assemble an engine, which is then run on the test bed next door.

The suspension, steering, brakes laboratory contains the work stations dedicated to dampers, wishbones, sub frames, knuckles, steering and hydraulic systems. The gearbox and transmission laboratory is orga-nized on the same lines.

On the floor above, the laboratory for the electrics and electronics looks after the electric harness. It takes seven weeks to mount each harness made up of several thousand connections.

All the components, whether they come from the factory laboratories or from sub-contractors, go through the measuring laboratory which has a 3-dimension measuring machine.

After being stocked in the huge parts store, the spare parts are brought to the main assembly shop where the sub-assemblies are built up. This large space is divided into two parts: one reserved for the rally cars, and the other for the test cars.

When the cars have been assembled they are given a shakedown on the Val d’Or test track, which has direct access from the factory. This is where the DS3 WRCs have their first test run to validate the fact that they are running properly. After more than 700 hours’ work, they are loaded into the transporter, which leave the factory to go to the places where Citroën Racing has achieved so many feats.

2013 PROGRAMMEWORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

Having competed as a works team in the FIA World Rally Championship since 2003, winning eight Manufacturers’ titles, Citroën Racing continues its involvement this year.

Homologated in 2011, when the FIA introduced new regulations based on 1.6-litre direct injection turbo-charged engines, the Citroën DS3 WRC will be running in its third season. With two titles and twenty-two wins on gravel, snow and tarmac, the Citroën DS3 WRC has set the standard for this new generation of cars.

The squad tasked with defending the superb competitive record of the Brand is the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team. After having joined Citroën last year, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen are set to take part in all thirteen rounds of the championship.

After winning nine Drivers’ and Co-drivers’ World Championships between 2004 and 2012, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena will be competing in a partial programme of four races (Monte-Carlo, Sweden, Argen-tina and France). Nominated to score points towards the Manufacturers’ championship when competing, the Franco-Monegasque duo will be replaced by Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio at the nine other rallies. A Citroën works driver between 2007 and 2010, Dani Sordo thus returns to the outfit that gave him his first chance to compete at the sport’s highest level.

A second team will be taking part in the Manufacturers’ World Championships under the name of Abu Dhabi Citroën Total World Rally Team. Competing in at least eight rounds, the no.10 DS3 WRC will be mainly driven by Khalid Al-Qassimi and Scott Martin. When unable to compete due to their commitments in the Middle East Rally Championship, this third works car will be driven by other Citroën Racing crews.

MIDDLE EAST RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

The first manufacturer to enter a works team in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, Citroën’s line-up features three crews from Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates.

2004 champion Khalid Al-Qassimi aims to win the title again. Along with co-driver Scott Martin, the Abu Dhabi driver can count on the qualities of the Citroën DS3 RRC, closely derived from the WRC, since it differs mainly by having a smaller turbo flange and more restrictive aerodynamic features.

Chosen following a two-day selection procedure organised by Citroën Racing and Abu Dhabi Racing, two young drivers from the United Arab Emirates will be competing in their first seasons in a Citroën DS3 R3. Mohamed Al-Sahlawi and Mohamed Al-Mutawaa can therefore count on the experience of the eight-time World Championship-winning team to learn about the sport and challenge for the ‘two-wheel drive’ cham-pionship.

WRC2 & EUROPEAN RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

On his return to international racing after almost two years away from the sport, Robert Kubica has chosen to compete in rallying with Citroën Racing for the 2013 season.

Alongside his co-driver and fellow countryman Maciek Baran, the Pole will be driving a DS3 RRC in a programme based on the WRC2 championship. Following special dispensation granted by the FIA, his car is fitted with a gearbox controlled by a steering wheel-mounted paddle. Featuring all of the non-WRC four-wheel drive cars, WRC2 requires competitors to take part in at least seven rallies, with the best six results counting towards the standings.

In order to increase his experience – which was non-existent on gravel at the start of the season – Robert Kubica is also taking part in a selection of European Rally Championship events, including Rally Islas Canarias, Rallye Açores, the Tour de Corse and Rally Poland.

COMPÉTITION-CLIENTS

CUSTOMER RACING

Citroën Racing’s preferred model, with the WRC (World Rally Car) and RRC (Regional Rally Car) versions, the Citroën DS3 also comes in versions that comply with the FIA R3 and R1 regulations. Intended for private drivers, these two-wheel drive cars are directly derived from the mass production range.

Marketed by the Citroën Racing boutique, the DS3 R3 and DS3 R1 are used in national and international promotional formulas set up by Citroën Racing.

At the foot of the ladder leading to WRC, the DS3 R1 provides young drivers with the chance to cut their teeth in the Junior Citroën Racing Trophy series. Held in five countries (Germany, Belgium, France, Poland and Switzerland), these competitions are contested exclusively at tarmac rallies.

They are all feeder series for the Citroën Racing Trophy, restricted to DS3 R3s in Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The race calendar generally feature both gravel and tarmac rounds so as to prepare drivers for international competitions.

New in 2013, the Citroën Top Driver series represents the ultimate in promotional formulas. Racing in DS3 R3s, the crews contest six rounds of the WRC3 to try and win a season in a DS3 R5. Developed during 2013, this four-wheel drive model will sit on the top rung of Citroën Racing’s customer racing ladder from 2014.

| 25

A TASTE FOR ADVENTURE

Since Citroën was founded in 1919, the company has always combined adventure and competition with its industrial activities. Today, Citroën Racing is the heir to the spirit that drove the mythic ‘Croisières’, the brainchild of André Citroën.

ADVENTURES AND RECORDS

André Citroën was a trained engineer who had a real gift for technology and creativeness. In the 1920s, this pioneer of the motor car industry sent his teams off on several sporting adventures. The ‘Croisière noire’ in Africa, the ‘Croisiére jaune‘ in Asia and the ‘Croisière blanche’ in North America followed one another, and have left an enduring mark in the history of the motor car.

The next chapter in Citroën’s achievemWents was written on the Montlhéry circuit. The French make tuned its 8cv, 10cv and 15cv models and set a series of records. In four years these ‘Rosalies’, as they were called, accumulated 192 world records! Among the major successes was ‘Rosalie IV’ – an 8cv with streamlined single-seater-like bodywork – which covered 300,000 kilometres in 133 days (almost 94 km/h average speed), with seven drivers relaying one another every five hours!

TECHNOLOGY AT THE SERVICE OF COMPETITION

Citroën has always associated its series production models with competition. At the end of the 50s the manufacturer entered its cars in rallies and in circuit racing. The aim was to test new technologies in view of their application to series production, and to show the qualities of the car with the distinctive double chevron badge.

The DS19 shone in the greatest rallies in the world scoring victories in the Monte Carlo (1959 and 1966), the Criterium Neige et Glace, the Tour of Belgium, the Liège-Sofia-Liège event, the Tour of Corsica and the Moroccan Rally.

Page 26: Citroën Racing - Guide 2013

26 |

The SM followed in the DS’s footsteps and battled with other GTs of its era winning the 1971 Moroccan Rally. This multi-purpose coupe also raced in the Spa 24 Hours. A few years later it was the CX’s turn to score numerous victories in long-distance rallies.

In 1981 Citroën began to develop a new racing car, the little Visa. The first Visa Trophy was homologated in Group 5 and served as the base for the Group B Visa 1000 Pistes unveiled in 1984.

Citroën then moved up a step with its BX 4TC Evolution. Only five months after its debut, it was withdrawn from racing as the Group B era came to an end in World Rally Championship.

THE BIRTH OF A WINNING MACHINE

In 1989 the former competitions department became Citroën Sport, and the new organization set itself its first major challenge on the world stage – victory in the Paris-Dakar!

On 29th December 1990 the ZX Grand Raid left Paris and set off for Dakar via Tripoli. After 6,747 timed kilometres Ari Vatanen won this mythic event on Citroën Sport’s first participation. The team added three more victories to its laurels with Pierre Lartigue in 1994, 1995 and 1996. During this period Citroën racked up five Manufacturers’ World Championship titles on the trot, as well as four Drivers’ titles with Pierre Lartigue. In six seasons the Citroën ZX Grand Raid won 36 out of the 42 events in which it took part!

WORLD RALLY CITROËN !

WORLD RALLY CITROËN!

In 1997 the Xsara replaced the ZX in the make’s showrooms. Citroën Sport did the same and swapped the ZX and rally-raids for the Xsara and the French Rally Championship. In less than two seasons the Xsara kit-car became a benchmark, and Philippe Bugalski won two French Championship titles on the trot. What was even better was that the Xsara kit-car, with 2-wheel drive and a normally aspirated engine, beat all the WRCs in two events counting for the 1999 World Rally Championship (Catalunya and Tour de Corse).

In 2001 Citroën Sport gave the Xsara WRC its debut with a partial world championship programme. Bugalski came eighth in the Catalunya Rally on his first appearance in the WRC.

Sébastien Loeb then finished in second place in the Sanremo Rally, and Jesus Puras gave the Xsara WRC its first win in the World Rally Championship in Rally France. It was the start of a new era!

In 2003, when Citroën took part in its first full championship, the make won the Manufacturers’ World Championship title thanks to a dream team consisting of Carlos Sainz, the late Colin McRae and Sébastien Loeb.

In 2004 and 2005 Citroën added another two manufacturers’ titles to its results, while Loeb racked up his first two drivers’ titles. Although Citroën withdrew from racing in 2006, Loeb continued to drive a privately-entered Xsara winning his third consecutive drivers’ title.

The French company returned to the World Rally Championship in 2007 with its C4 WRC. Thanks to this car the double chevron make added another four drivers’ titles for Loeb, and three more manufacturers’ crowns to its laurels between 2008 and 2010.

The 2011 season saw the introduction of new regulations. Citroën extended its series of titles with the DS3 WRC. Winner of five rounds, like his team-mate Sébastien Ogier, Sébastien Loeb remained unbea-ten. It was the same story in 2012, when the Frenchman secured his ninth successive and final title. New arrival in the team, Mikko Hirvonen helped Citroën to its first one-two finish in the Drivers’ championship. The Brand also won its eighth Manufacturers’ World Championship.

THE ‘LITTLE RACER’Unveiled in 2011 to comply with the new regulations drawn up the FIA, Citroën DS3 WRC is pac-ked full of Créative Technologie. Its results have continued to uphold Citroën’s impressive track record in the World Rally Championship. COMPACT AND AGGRESSIVE DESIGN Fine-tuned during extensive wind tunnel testing, Citroën DS3 WRC’s bodywork accentuates the curves of the original model. The wings and the bumpers have been redesigned in order to attain the maximum authorised width of 1,820mm and to accommodate the 18-inch wheels (tarmac version). The front bum-per now includes an aerodynamic splitter, whilst a stylish rear spoiler has been attached to the tailgate. The doors have also been altered, with the installation of polycarbonate fixed frame windows and the injection of foam designed to absorb energy in the event of a side impact.

Built using the production body shell, the DS3 WRC chassis includes a roll cage made of over 40 metres of steel tubing. The lower part has undergone several significant structural modifications: upper attach-ment points added for the rear McPherson-strut suspension, optimisation of the lower suspension at-tachment points, integration of the transmission tunnel and the rear differential, lateral reinforcements added level with the body sills.

Since DS3 is more compact than its predecessor, Citroën Racing’s engineers worked on improving the posi-tion of each component so as to achieve the best possible balance between the car’s centres of inertia and centres of gravity.

| 41

GROUND LINK SYSTEMS: THE HUNT FOR EFFICIENCY

Since ground link system regulations have only undergone minor modifications compared to the previous generation of World Rally Cars, design office engineers were able to make the most of their experience, deploying solutions that have already proven their worth. The three-way adjustable shock absorbers (low- and high-speed compression and rebound) have been designed and built by Citroën Racing.

Slightly smaller than before in order to comply with the 2011 regulations, the 355mm (tarmac) and 300mm (gravel) brake disks at the front, and the 300mm brake disks at the rear, come with four-piston callipers. A water-cooling system improves the efficiency of the brakes on tarmac.

THE DIRECT INJECTION REVOLUTION

For the first time ever, Citroën Racing has designed all of the components of its engines, including the cylinder block and cylinder head. Housed in a machined aluminium block, the exquisitely crafted four-cylinder 1600cc engine complies with the requirements of the regulations, which stipulate in particular a minimum weight and a position for the centre of gravity.

It is however on the car’s 16-valve cylinder head that the main change has taken place. Now mandatory in WRC, direct injection posed a real challenge for the engine specialists at Citroën Racing. Fuel is only mixed with air once it has been injected into the combustion chamber.

Page 42: Citroën Racing - Guide 2013

42 |

| 43

Compared with older two-litre turbocharged engines, the reduction in capacity combined with the limited booster pressure results in a slight drop in power output, which is compensated by direct injection, whilst torque is pretty much halved. The engine definition is certified for three years. Each car cannot use more than three engines during the 2013 season.

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE FOR ALL SURFACES

W ith special stages on icy Swedish roads, rough gravel tracks in Greece and smooth Catalan tarmac, DS3 WRC has to cope with both varied and demanding road surfaces. Although it is without any electronic as-sistance, the four-wheel drive transmission has been designed to maximise performance in all conditions.

The ‘World Rally Car’ regulations require manufacturers to select a supplier that has met the specifica-tions drawn up by the FIA. The weight and price of each element are set by the regulations. Citroën Racing has signed a technical partnership agreement with the French company, Sadev.

The six-speed sequential gearbox and the front differential are integrated in an aluminium housing. These are connected to the rear differential via a longitudinal drive shaft. The central differential is pro-hibited, but a system may be used to disconnect the rear wheels when using the hydraulic hand brake. Semi-automatic, steering wheel-mounted controls are also outlawed, and have been replaced with a totally manual gearshift lever.

Like the engine, the lifespan of the gearbox is restricted by the regulations. The manufacturers must choose three links of three rallies and one link of two rallies in which they must use the same transmission.

CITROËN DS3 RRC: A NEW ADDITION TO THE FAMILY!

Having come into force at the start of 2011, the new FIA World Rally Cars regulations allow manufactu-rers to produce a Regional Rally Car (RRC) variant of their models. These products are intended for use in the championships below the level of the WRC: WRC-2 (formerly S-WRC), European Rally Championship (ERC), Middle East Rally Championship (MERC), some national championships and so on.

The World Rally Championship-winning car in 2011 and 2012, the Citroën DS3 WRC is now available in an RRC version. Visually, the two models are different since the regulations are more restrictive as regards aerodynamic features on the RRC. The bumper intakes are smaller and the rear spoiler complies with the S2000 standards.

Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine has been slightly modified, with a specific engine flywheel and a 30mm booster flange (compared with 33mm on the WRC). Maximum power output therefore drops to 275bhp. The other significant change concerns the brakes in tarmac configuration: the diameter of the discs has been reduced from 355 to 350mm and the water-cooling system has been removed.

Aside from these changes, the Citroën DS3 RRC maintains all the strengths of its big sister: reinforced body with welded, multi-point roll cage offering a high level of safety and resilience, McPherson suspen-sions and Citroën Racing adjustable shock absorbers, six-speed sequential gearbox, etc.

CITROËN DS3 R5: THE FUTURE IS NOW

Unveiled at the 2013 Rally de Portugal, the Citroën DS3 R5 is designed to represent the pinnacle of rally customer racing at Citroën Racing.

Gradually set to replace Super 2000s and RRCs in the FIA’s national and regional championships (Eu-rope, Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, etc.), broadly speaking, R5 class cars are ‘little WRCs’: 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged engine, sequential gearbox, four-wheel drive, McPherson suspension, etc.

Currently undergoing development, the Citroën DS3 R5 will be marketed by Citroën Racing for the 2014 season. The winner of the 2013 Citroën Top Driver series will also get a drive in one as part of a pro-gramme in WRC2.

A STANDARD! In addition to its official participation in WRC, Citroën Racing has always offered products desi-gned for customers. The French manufacturer has now furthered this rich tradition by designing Citroën DS3 R3, which made its rallying debut at the middle of 2010. Based on the Group R3T regulations drawn up by the FIA, DS3 R3 features the same structural design and appearance as the production model.

CITROËN RACING, EXPERTS WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY

Citroën Racing has deployed its extensive expertise in passive safety and chassis rigidity on DS3 R3. The standard monocoque chassis has been re-welded and fitted with a multi-point roll cage. In order to improve weight distribution, the battery and automatic fire extinguisher are positioned behind the seats. A steel skidplate protects the underside of the engine and also helps to lower the car’s centre of gravity. The flexible, FIA-homologated fuel tank remains in its original position.

ADAPTABLE AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION

DS3 R3’s efficiency on all road surfaces stems from the quality of its suspension system, designed to make full use of the regulations. At the front, the production sub-frame has been altered so that tubular wishbones can be fitted. The axle is both lighter and stronger than on the production model.

The shock absorbers boast several innovative features: the aluminium struts are lubricated in an oil bath, which improves the consistency and lifespan of the suspension, and the lower, frontally-offset anchor point, which increases the travel and the guiding length of the shock absorber. In order to adapt its road handling to all driving styles, DS3 R3 offers a variety of setup options.

The braking system features a ‘pedal box’ assembly with two master cylinders. The discs are held in place by four-calliper pistons at the front and two-calliper pistons at the rear. The handbrake is hydraulic.

ENGINE: A 1.6-LITRE HIGH-PRESSURE TURBO WITH INCREDIBLE TORQUE!

For the first time ever, Citroën Racing has produced a customer-racing product fitted with a turbochar-ged engine. The experience acquired by the brand in WRC for almost ten years has been put to good use in its design. The 1.6-litre THP (high pressure turbo) engine is very closely related to the production model used throughout the PSA group. Fitted with a regulation-compliant 29mm turbo flange, it deve-lops 210bhp of power and generates a torque of 350Nm (with commercially-available fuel). This second value improves traction and delivers excellent versatility at all engine speeds.

In accordance with the regulations, many parts have been taken or derived from the production model. For example, the intake and exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, injectors and injection pumps are identical to those used on production models. The air filter, camshaft, pistons, connecting rods, engine flywheel and exhaust system are, however, specific racing parts.

GEARBOX: A MAJOR FIRST WITH SEMI-AUTOMATIC CONTROL

For the first time, a customer-racing product has been fitted with a semi-automatic gearbox, which re-duces the time spent changing gears and increases reliability. The electronic management system only authorizes gear changes when the engine parameters allow it. The clutch pedal is still present, but is only used to drive off. During subsequent gear changes, the clutch is automatically controlled.

Under the bonnet, the specific elements of the semi-automatic control (solenoid valves, actuators and pres-sure unit) have all been taken from the production model and adapted to the six-speed gearbox. The housing for the twin-disc clutch has been cast in aluminium, whilst the gearing casing has been cut from the block.

RALLYING FOR ALL!Designed to promote easier access to motorsport, Citroën DS3 R1 is the new addition to Citroën Racing’s customer racing line-up. Particularly easy to get to grips with, this product is marketed as a training tool, in which owners can learn about rally driving in complete safety and at a rea-sonable cost.

Created by the FIA, the R1 category is intended to promote the introduction of affordable and accessible rally cars. In order to keep costs down to the strict minimum, most mechanical components must remain as standard, such as the powertrain, chassis and suspension systems, brakes, etc. As performance is not the main priority, most of the permitted changes relate to driver and co-driver safety.

Based on Citroën DS3 So Chic VTi 120, the R1 version makes the most of the advantages of the production model, especial-ly its 1.6VTi direct injection en-gine, the result of collaboration between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the BMW Group. The en-gine is coupled with a standard, manual synchromesh gearbox, with short torque settings.

As safety is one of the main priorities for both Citroën Racing and the FIA, Citroën DS3 R1 sets a new benchmark in this area in the category. In order to ensure a high build quality and an unprecedented level of reliability, the cars are delivered ‘ready to race’ after having been assembled at the Poissy plant. The monocoque chassis is taken off the production line in order for a welded roll cage to be fitted, the design of which is based on the DS3 R3. All of the mandatory items of equipment (bucket seats, harness, fire extinguishers, master switch, etc.) are also included.

All of the components used on the chassis and suspension systems are as standard, except for the shock absorbers, which are developed by Citroën Racing. The brakes have been improved thanks the use of racing brake pads and fluid. The one-piece wheels are fitted with Pirelli RX (slick) or RE (wet weather) tyres.

Considered to be very easy to get to grips with by the drivers who took part in its development, Citroën DS3 R1 delivers real driving pleasure and comfort as well as the best performance levels in its category. This attractive customer racing product puts users on the first rung of a ladder which leads on to Citroën DS3 R3, DS3 R5 and, for the most talented drivers, DS3 WRC...

Sébastien Loeb is the most-titled driver in the history of rallying. He holds the records for the highest number of world titles, number of consecutive victories, victories in a season and podiums on the trot.

Loeb has had a stunning rise to fame. He came from the Citroën nursery, and won the French Gravel Rally Championship in a Saxo Kit-Car in the 2-wheel drive category, which led to him becoming a member of the Citroën factory team at the end of 2000. He achieved the aims set for him each year (French Rally Champion in the Xsara Kit-Car, and Super 1600 World Champion in a Saxo S1600). His first works drive was in the 2001 Sanremo Rally in a Xsara WRC in which he finished second after a mind-boggling performance that put him firmly among the greats of the sport.

Since then the driver from Alsace has played his part in the rise of the team in the WRC by securing its first manufacturers’ title in 2003. Loeb went on to win nine consecutive drivers’ crowns between 2004 and 2012. He decided to hang up his rally driver’s gloves at the end of the 2013season, only taking part in a few events this year.

Passionate about racing in all its forms, Sébastien Loeb has already begun to prepare for life after ral-lying. After a highly eclectic 2013 season, he will be competing in the WTCC with Citroën Racing from 2014 onwards.

Shortly after achieving his dream by taking part – as a driver – in the 1997 Rallye Monte-Carlo, Daniel Elena made his debut as a co-driver. He worked with Hervé Bernard, member of the FFSA’s Rallye Jeunes (young rally drivers) team. Towards the end of the year, he took part in his first rally alongside Sébastien Loeb at the Critérium des Cévennes. They have competed together ever since, sharing all their wins and titles!

In the 2006 Sardinian Rally Elena became the codriver with the highest number of victories in the FIA World Rally Championship, as his twenty-fifth win beats Luis Moya’s record.

Since then he has continued to rack up victories and titles. Like his driving buddy, the Monegasque is the codriver with the highest number of titles and victories in the world championship.

Proud of his Monaco origins, Daniel is also the perfect foil to Loeb. In the face of his driver’s legendary discretion, Daniel always has a joke or a quip to lighten up the ambience!

In addition to his career as a co-driver, Daniel Elena still takes part in a few rallies as a driver, just for fun. Preparing for life after rallying, he has also created his own company, All Sports Management, specialised in events management and rally logistics.

After learning to drive on the frozen lakes of his native Finland and making his competitive debut in rallycross, Mikko Hirvonen could barely wait to turn 18 so he could sit his driving test and enter his first rally. Quickly spotted and then supported by Timo Jouhki, he rapidly acquired lots of experience by driving a wide range of cars in an increasingly international programme.

After winning the Finnish championship in the Group A two-wheel drive category in 2002, he became works driver at Ford and then Subaru. Without a works drive for 2005, Mikko impressed in a privately-operated Focus, as he claimed his first podium finish in Spain. In 2006, he rejoined the Ford works outfit. His first team-mate was Marcus Grönholm; he finished third in the world championship on two occasions and clinched his first victory in Australia.

From 2008 onwards, Mikko Hirvonen became Sébastien Loeb’s fiercest rival in the fight for the world title. He finished as runner-up three times, losing out at the final round in both 2009 and 2011.

Recruited by Citroën Racing at the start of the 2012 season, he regularly pushed Sébastien Loeb all the way. Mikko claimed his first win in the DS3 WRC at Rally Italia Sardegna. Runner-up to Loeb on four occasions, he helped the team to achieve its first ever one-two finish in the Drivers’ World Championship.

Date and place of birth: 13rd January 1969 in Hartola (Finland)

Thanks to his father, Jarmo Lehtinen was immersed in the world of rallying from an early age. He had his first outing as co-driver in 1988, alongside his friend Jari Mikkola. For just over ten years he accumulated experience, particularly with Marko Ramanen in Finnish and British rally championships.

Jarmo started to pair with Mikko Hirvonen in 2002. Thanks to his skills he helped his young fellow-countryman to improve on the national scene and on their first forays on the international one.

After fifteen years Lehtinen finally became a works co-driver in 2003. In their first season with Ford, and the following one with Subaru, the pair gained a reputation for steadiness as they were regular points scorers.

After the 2005 season in which Mikko and Jarmo raced as privateers, they were taken on again by the Blue Oval in 2006. After six seasons, they were recruited by Citroën Racing in 2012. The crew racked up fifteen victories in the WRC, but they were unable to prevent Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena from winning the titles. Lehtinen has filled the runner-up spot in the World Co-Drivers Rally Championship on four occasions.

Date and place of birth: 2/05/83 in Torrelavega (Spain)

After trying his hand at motocross, karting and hillclimbing, Dani Sordo took part in his first rally in 1999. Over the years, the young Cantabria-born driver made a name for himself. Beginning in 2003, initially with Mitsubishi and then with Citroën Sport España, he won the Junior Spanish Championship three times running and, in 2005, won the senior title.

In a Citroën C2 Super 1600, he also entered the Junior World Championship with the Kronos Racing team and claimed his first world title, winning four rounds in the process. He pursued his involvement with Kronos Racing the following year, completing a full racing programme in 2006 in a Citroën Xsara WRC. In what was his first season at the sport’s highest level, he secured four podium finishes and finished fifth overall in the championship.

In 2007, he joined the Citroën Total World Rally Team. Over a four-year period, he racked up twenty-five podium finishes and helped Citroën to win three manufacturers’ world titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

For its entry in WRC, Mini called upon the services of the Spaniard to develop and drive one of its works cars. In two seasons spent at Prodive, Dani proved that he was still fast and consistent, but the manufacturer decided to leave the WRC earlier than expected. 2013 therefore sees a big comeback for Dani Sordo, who has always been considered to be a “member of the family” at Citroën Racing.

Like most of his fellow co-drivers, Carlos del Barrio hadn’t turned twenty when he climbed into the passenger seat of a rally car for the first time. His career really took off when he started racing alongside Jesús Puras in 1994.

Together, the two men took part in a dozen or so WRC rallies, particularly in a Citroën ZX 16S and a Xsara Kit-Car. The partnership also won three Spanish Championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Carlos also competed with many other drivers, such as Salvador Canellas or Dani Sordo for the 2004 season!

In 2005 and 2006, Carlos competed in two full WRC seasons alongside Xavi Pons in a Xsara. Over the next few seasons, he paired up with Jesús Puras, Dani Solà and Daniel Oliveira in IRC. When he wasn’t competing as a co-driver, Carlos worked in a gravel crew for Dani, with whom he remained very close.

It was therefore no surprise that the duo renewed their partnership at the start of the 2011 season. After two years at Mini, they joined Citroën Racing in 2013.

Date and place of birth: 18th February 1972 in Abu Dhabi (United Arabic Emirates)

Sheikh Khalid bin Faisal bin Sultan Al Qassimi’s first taste of motorsport came early in life. His rally career formally began in 2002 when he contested his first full season in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) and won the Group N title as well as the United Arab Emirates Championship in his debut year.

Sheikh Khalid retained the UAE title in 2003, although his year ended in disaster when an accident left him with a broken vertebra. He returned to the wheel of a Subaru Impreza WRX in 2004 and eventually lifted the MERC crown after outright wins in Bahrain and Syria.

Khalid continued to perform strongly in the MERC (coming 2nd in 2005 and 3rd in 2006) while also competing in the Production Car World Rally Championships (PWRC). A string of consistent results in the PWRC led to his entry into the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team in 2007 for the second half of the season. Over five consecutive seasons until 2011, Sheikh Khalid tackled nearly 40 WRC rounds. His best result came at Rally Australia in 2011 when he finished fifth.

Throughout his WRC career, Khalid has acted as a mentor and ambassador for Abu Dhabi emirate and been a stalwart figure in helping talented, young Emirati drivers develop their skills and hone their ambitions to drive at the sport’s highest level. Chairman of Abu Dhabi Racing, Sheikh Khalid has formed a partnership with Citroën Racing, which is planning more programmes of this kind.

After spending two years learning his trade, Scott Martin made his competitive debut alongside Matthew Wilson in 2004. In their first season together, the Cumbria-based crew finished as runners-up in the British Rally Championship. 2005 was spoiled by a major accident at the first round of the BRC. Driver and co-driver were injured in the accident and had a long lay-off before being able to return to action towards the end of the year.

Scott Martin joined the World Rally Championship in 2006, initially alongside Barry Clark in a promotional formula. The pair continued their successful partnership in 2007, winning the title. At the same time, Scott increased his experience by operating as co-driver to Mark Higgins on certain rounds of the P-WRC.

The Wilson/Martin crew reformed in 2008, with a full WRC programme in a Focus RS WRC07. They enjoyed their best season in 2009, securing seventh place overall in the Championship, having finished ten out of the twelve rallies in the points. Continuing to demonstrate impressive consistency, Matthew and Scott achieved similar results in 2010 and 2011.

Their partnership ended in 2012, when Matthew Wilson broke his ankle after Rallye Monte-Carlo. Out of action for the majority of the year, Scott was chosen by Sheikh Khalid Al-Qassimi to work as his co-driver for his programme with Citroën Racing in 2013.

Date and place of birth: 7th December 1984 in Cracow (Poland)

Determined from a very early age to pursue a career as a racing driver, Robert Kubica had no hesitation in moving to Italy when he realised he had nothing more to prove on the karting tracks of his native Poland. He then successfully switched to single-seater racing, but his progress was halted when he was injured in a car accident at the start of the 2003 season. In 2005, he rose to prominence as one of motor racing’s talented young drivers in dominating the World Series FR 3.5. Invited to take part in testing with the Renault F1 Team, he was ultimately recruited by BMW Sauber as their third driver. He impressed after stepping in for the unavailable Jacques Villeneuve at the Hungarian GP and was soon afterwards confir-med as one of the team’s works drivers.

2007 will be most remembered for the serious accident in which Robert was involved at the Canadian GP, but he finished the season on a high. In 2008, he pushed his way into contention for the title. Appro-priately, as fate would have it, he won in Montréal and finished tied for third in the championship with Räikkönen. Disappointed by a frustrating season in 2009, Robert Kubica left BMW Sauber to join the Renault F1 Team. He rediscovered his form, collecting podium finishes on the way, and an excellent 2001 season appeared to lie ahead.

Passionate about motor sport in all its forms, the Pole spent the off-season competing in rallies. But on 6 February 2011, he was seriously injured when he went off at the Ronde di Andora rally (Italy). After over a year of rehabilitation, he returned to rallying action in 2012. Having decided to continue competing in rallying, Robert Kubica chose Citroën Racing to support him on his 2013 programme.

After a three-day selection procedure, Citroën and Abu Dhabi chose the talented young drivers who take part in the Middle East Rally Championship in two Citroën DS3 R3s. Mohamed Al-Mutawaa and Mohammed Al-Sahlawi topped a pool of thirteen candidates from across the United Arab Emirates, after a series of specific tests held at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Currently studying finance at the Zayed University in Dubai, Mohamed Al-Mutawaa already has quite a bit of experience in track racing. In 2007, he was selected from among 700 young drivers to repre-sent the United Arab Emirates in Europe by joining the Autosport Academy, with which he competed for one season in Formula Renault 1.6. Then entered in the Touring Car Championship in 2009/2010, he finished as runner-up in the United Arab Emirates GT Championship (2010/2011) and also claimed second place in the Formula Gulf 1000 series.

Holder of a degree in accounting, Mohamed Al-Sahlawi is a beginner in motorsport but he stood out during the selection procedure thanks to his fighting spirit and determination. He also demonstrated an impressive ability to improve rapidly. In the background during the preparations on Friday, he proved to be one of fastest when the drivers completed their first timed laps.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EVENTSThe rallies can last 2, 3 or even 4 days. The total distance of the special stages must be between 300 and 500 kms. A rally can be run on mixed surfaces, but all stages must be held on the same type of surface (mixed stages are forbidden). More than 80 kms of stages between two service halts is not allowed.

RECCERecce takes place according to a programme defined by the organizer. Crews can cover each stage twice maximum. Speed is limited and checked by GPS.

SHAKEDOWN AND QUALIFYING STAGEThe shakedown also helps to decide the starting or-der of the first stage on snow and gravel. First of all, the crews can cover the stage twice in free practice. Then each car sets off for a timed run in the cham-pionship order. The drivers can then choose their starting order for the first section, the quickest be-ing the first to choose and so on. The cars are placed in parc fermé after the qualifying shakedown. In tarmac rallies each crew must cover the stage four times minimum.

STAGESFor the first section of tarmac rallies the crews start the stages in the drivers’ world championship order. After that the starting order is decided according to the overall classification of the previous section. On gravel, the starting order for the first section is decided by the qualifying shakedown. Then the P1 and P2 priority drivers start in the reverse order of the general classification of the previous section. There are two-minute minimum intervals between starts. The stages are timed to a tenth of a second. A standing start is given while the finish is a flying one. The penalty for jumping the start is 10s.

SERVICEService is strictly forbidden outside the times and places defined by the rally programme. The crew members can work on the car at all times (outside the parc fermé) with the help of the on-board equipment. Services can be carried out in the main parc or in distant zones. The only people allowed to work on the car are the crews and the eight mechanics identified by armbands.During a distant service the equipment that can be used is reduced to a minimum (jack, pressure pins, hand tools). Repairs must be carried out with the parts carried in the car.

TYRESThe manufacturers must designate a tyre manu-facturer complying with the specification of the FIA for the whole season. The Citroën Total World Rally Team has chosen Michelin. The number of tyres per crew is limited by the supplementary regulations of each rally. A car can carry two spare wheels maximum.

From the Ardèche to hills above Monaco, the world’s oldest rally is held on some of the most stunning roads in the south of France. The main difficulty stems from the weather, which can be very unpredictable at this time of year.

Even though it is held on frozen gravel roads, Rally Sweden is one of the quickest of the season, thanks to the grip provided by the use of studded tyres. And although you can run wide onto the snow banks when they’re firm, you can also get stuck in one...

Having joined the WRC calendar in 2004, Mexico quickly became one of the most popular rallies of the year. It is also a nightmare for the engineers, who have to minimise the power lost

due to the high altitude of the stages.
