THE ORIGIN OF THE AFTERNOON TEA
Anna Maria Russell (1783 – 1857), 7th Duchess of Bedford, is known for the creation
of the Afternoon Tea in 1840. Traditionally, dinner was not served prior to 8:30 or
9:00 pm in the evening. The Duchess often became hungry in the afternoon especially
in the summer time when dinner was served after sundown.
She would secretly get food delivered to her quarters;
several snacks comprised of small meals of bread, butter and other small treats such as
cakes, tarts and biscuits. Once the Duchess’ secret ritual was discovered, she was not
ridiculed as she had feared. On the contrary, her routine became a popular ritual: small
meal with tea, also known as “Afternoon Tea”.
