The preposition à has several meanings:
• in Patrick habite à Paris.
• at Nous sommes à la piscine.
• to Vas-tu à Tours?
What happens when à is followed by a definite article?
• Voici le café.

Élysées.
• Marc est au café.• Marie va au café.
*********************************• Tu es aux Champs-
Élysées.• Je vais aux Champs-
Élysées.
When à is followed by le or les it changes to au and aux.
Does the same happen in these sentences?
• Voici la piscine.
******************************• Voici l’hôtel.
• Anne est à la piscine.• Éric va à la piscine.
******************************• Je suis à l’hôtel.• Vous allez à l’hôtel.
No change is needed when à is followed by la or l’.
