La bouteille de La Semaine Sélectionnée par Frédéric Rolland-Piegue

Chef-Sommelier du Restaurant Christophe Quéant, Pommard

Créée par Jean Guyon, cette belle propriété établie sur une croupe argilo graveleuse

demeure toujours un grand classique médocain.

Ce discret mais non moins élégant cru du Médoc a la particularité d'être élaboré par le

maestro italien Ricardo Cotarella, élu meilleur vinificateur italien en 2001 qui tire la

quintessence des quatre cépages assemblés,

Merlot (70%), Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc et Petit Verdot (10%).

Mais revenons à la dégustation en elle-même où le vin présente une superbe robe grenat à

reflets carmin limpides et brillants. Au nez, on ressent d'entrée le cabernet vendange à

parfaite maturité et la finesse du merlot associés à une

prise de bois neuf français bien maîtrisée. Petite griotte, cassis et sureau sont les principales

notes fruitées sur un support vanille et aux épices douces. A l'agitation, la mûre et la fraise

croquante sont renforcées par de fins tanins et une impression de jeune cuir. En bouche, le

vin est gourmand, frais, typique des beaux médocs complexes aux courbes harmonieuses.

Juteux et de belle richesse, les fruits noirs sont relayés par les épices (poivre noir), le zan

ainsi qu'une fraîche note de sous-bois de belle facture.

Côté cuisine, la caille aux raisins est un must mais faites vous plaisir avec une noisette de

sanglier et son embeurrée de choux. Si vous êtes presses, un rosbif froid fera parfaitement

l'affaire !

Pour tirer la quintessence de ce Rollan de By 2011, vous pouvez le carafer au moins 30'

avant de le servir à 15°. Très facile à se procurer, je vous conseille si vous avez la chance de

mettre la main dessus d'acheter ce cru en

magnum...

Les Iconoclastes L'idée générale est de bousculer les codes pour coller au plus près à la modernité de l'époque, pour répondre aussi aux formidables aspirations du marché globalisé. Le monde veut du vin, le monde aura du vin. Puisqu'il faut voir plus loin, plus longtemps, plus haut, ceux-là jouent avec les concepts et les ambitions. Avec de vrais succès. Il y a les artisans d’art, ils cisèlent les chefs d’œuvre du vin. Les amoureux de la terre, ils célèbrent la révélation du terroir. Les aventuriers du vin, ils repoussent les frontières des grands crus. Et il y a les iconoclastes qui jouent avec les concepts et les ambitions. On peut se dire qu'un homme qui a connu une réussite fulgurante devient ipso facto un vigneron de talent ou, au moins, un propriétaire visionnaire. Erreur, les exemples du contraire abondent. Alors, quoi ? Que faut-il faire pour réussir toujours ? Jean Guyon ne s'est pas posé la question, mais il n'a pas décidé non plus den rabattre sur sa personnalité bouillonnante de bader sa créativité, de faire profil bas. II a pris le taureau (le vignoble, en fait) par les cornes et, au travers de mille commentaires pas toujours amenés, il a foncé droit devant avec une faculté assez peu commune à n'être jamais là où on l'attend. Les gazettes annoncent la vente imminente de son domaine Rollan de By. Ah non, il vient d'en doubler la surface en achetant un autre château. On le croit trop « Parisien » pour s'intéresser à Bordeaux? II participe de très prés à la création du Cercle Rive Gauche. Ses vins sont des champions de la dégustation à l'aveugle qui dame sans cesse le pion des plus grands. Jean Guyon, quoi. LE CHOIX DE Château Rollan de By - Médoc 2011 Un grand classique dont le vinificateur a tiré la quintessence du millésime. Un peu de temps lui serait nécessaire pour affiner ses tanins puissants, mais sans astringence, qui sont les garants de sa bonne évolution. 15/20

Le Cercle de Rive Droite och Le Cercle de Rive Gauche är på Sverigebesök. Den förstnämnda organisationen har tio år på nacken och är en sammanslutning av 135 slott från den så kallade högra stranden av Bordeaux. Den sistnämnda är en för året nybildad organisation för slotten på den vänstra stranden och har

i skrivande stund 28 medlemmar. Tillsammans marknadsför de bägge organisationerna sig under namnet Grand Cercle des Vins Bordeaux.

Under det dagslånga besöket i Stockholm fick Vinbanken möjligheten att diskutera Bordeaux och de två sammanslutningarnas syfte med presidenterna Alain Raynaud och Francis Boutémy.

Alain Raynaud är ett välkänt namn i vinvärlden. Dels som den mäktiga Union des Grand Crus ordförande under flera år innan han startade Le Cercle de Rive Droite 2002 men även för sitt engagemang i appellationen Saint-Emilion och då slottet Quinault d’Enclos i synnerhet. Francis Boutémy äger Pessac-Léognan egendomen Haut-Lagrange.

Varför behöver då jag som vinvän ta till mig av denna information kanske du undrar? Svaret är enkelt; Grand Cercle des Vins Bordeaux vill att du som konsument åter ska kunna njuta av högkvalitativ Bordeaux utan att inköpen blir allt för kännbara i plånboken.

- Vi har absolut inte som syfte att konkurrera med Union des Grand Crus (UGC), berättar Alain Raynaud. Grand Cercle des Vins Bordeaux fyller ett viktigt tomrum som uppstått i och med den enorma framgång som UGC’s medlemmar skördat.

- UGC’s framgångar har kommit deras medlemmar till godo men har också fått konsekvensen att slottens viner framstår som ouppnåelig lyx för en majoritet av vinkonsumenterna, fortsätter Alain Raynaud.

- Vår ambition är att hålla dörren öppen för medlemskap för alla slott som är beredda att följa de kvalitetskrav vi ställer upp, säger Francis Boutémy. Dessutom vill vi att snittpriset för en flaska från våra medlemmar landar i intervallet 10-30 euro, fortsätter han.

- Och för att säkerställa att slotten lever upp till de två sammanslutningarnas kvalitetskrav så låter vi en oberoende provningsgrupp bedöma vinerna varje år, Grand Jury Européen, säger Alain Raynaud.

Presidenterna för Grand Cercle des Vins Bordeaux uppvisar ett genuint intresse för den svenska marknaden och är väl medvetna om vilken betydelse Bordeaux tidigare haft för svenska vinkonsumenter.

-Samtidigt är vi medvetna om att det krävs stora insatser för att åter få den skandinaviska konsumenten att hitta tillbaka till vår region, avslutar Alain Raynaud. Vi måste få ut budskapet att det finns bra Bordeaux till rimliga priser. Fel vore annars; vi är ju faktiskt Frankrikes största kvalitetsregion men bilden är ändå den av lyxartiklar i mångas ögon.

Zugehörigkeit zur englischen Krone zwischen dem 12. und dem 15. Jahrhundert sorgten für exzellente Handelsbeziehungen zu Großbritannien. Auch die Hansestädte und andere Seemächte wurden früh beliefert. Und Bordeaux adelte sich selbst; es bastelte sich mit dem Château (Schloss) als Weingutsitz ein Image, als würde Ihro Durchlaucht persönlich den Korken in die Flasche drücken. Wein aus Bordeaux war schon im 18. Jahrhundert weltberühmt.

Relativ strenge Vorschriften was Erträge, Rebsorten und Anbau betrifft, ließen kaum Experimente zu. Bordeaux blieb immer Bordeaux: dunkel, tanninreich, ausdrucksstark mit gutem Alterungspotenzial, ideal als Essensbegleiter. Allein in Rheinhessen sind 40 Rebsorten zugelassen, im Herzen des Bordelais beschränkte man sich im Wesentlichen auf drei rote Sorten.

Die Preise für Bordeaux lernten spätestens in den 1990er Jahren das Fliegen, als in Asien und Russland neue Käuferschichten auf den Markt kamen. Weil die verfügbare Menge an Wein aber gleich blieb und mit 1991, 1992 und 1993 gleich drei schwache Jahrgänge nacheinander folgten, wurde Spitzen-Bordeaux plötzlich knapp. Die Preise explodierten.

Ende der 1990er Jahre erreichte die Hysterie ihren ersten Höhepunkt. Beim Gastronomen und Weinhändler Fritz Keller im badischen Oberbergen fuhren damals die Kunden mit dem Zwölftonner vor. Sie ließen sich die Preisliste für Bordeaux-Weine geben, arbeiteten sich durch die Seiten und schrieben dicke schwarze Ziffern hinter einzelne Posten. Kellers Empfangsdamen, die die Order ausgehändigt bekamen, veränderten schlagartig die Gesichtsfarbe. Die Herren wollten die teuersten Bordeauxweine auf der Liste komplett abräumen.

Es herrschte Goldgräberstimmung, die Preise für die guten Jahrgänge der großen Châteaus stiegen schneller, als die Händler ihre Listen korrigieren konnten. Jede Auktion brachte neue Rekorde. Der Sturm auf die Prestigeflaschen trieb die Fachjournalisten schnurstracks in den Zoo: „Wie die Hyänen, wie die Heuschrecken, wie die Geier“, so war zu lesen, hätten sich die Käufer auf die Weine gestürzt.

Die Preistreiberei steigerte sich ins Absurde; sie hat sich bis heute nicht mehr richtig beruhigt. Es waren in der Regel keine Weinliebhaber, sondern Spekulanten, die im großen Stil einkauften. Rendite statt Weinkultur. Nicht der Gaumen, sondern das Portemonnaie wird gestreichelt. So ist Bordeaux in den 90er Jahren endgültig zum Anlageobjekt geworden.

Bei Liv-Ex.com kann man das Weinbusiness in seiner extremsten Form besichtigen. Wie die Börsenkurse von Dax und Dow Jones huschen die Notierungen für Spitzenweine übers Laufband: Haut- Brion 2003: 2 700 Dollar, Latour 2009: 9550 Dollar usw. In keinem anderen Weingebiet der Welt hat Dionysos so große Dollarzeichen in den Augen.

Viele echte Liebhaber widert der Rummel nur noch an: Martin Kössler, streitbarer Weinmaniac vom Nürnberger Weinhaus Kössler & Ulbricht, wettert seit Jahren gegen die ungehemmte Preistreiberei. Die vernünftigen Leute, sagt er, seien längst ausgestiegen. Für Kössler ist klar: „Es gibt keinen Wein auf dieser Welt, der tausend Euro Wert ist.“ Aber den Käufern geht es auch gar nicht um Wein, sondern um den Namen: Das abendliche Glas Pétrus schmeckt nicht nur nach Cassis und Zigarrenkiste, sondern auch nach Luxus und Wohlstand, es gehört längst zu den Insignien der Superreichen. Dass manch einer den Namen des Weinguts lange für eine Benediktinerabtei gehalten hat, spielt schon keine Rolle mehr.

Teurer Bordeaux, sagt Kössler, sei der ideale Wein für Ahnungslose, die sich hinter klingenden Namen verstecken. Was die Kritiker besonders fuchst: Gerade Bordeaux müsste eigentlich preiswert sein. Anders als an der Mosel oder im Duerotal, dem Anbaugebiet des Portweins, wo die Winzer in extremen Steillagen schuften, ist das Anbaugebiet rund um die Flüsse Gironde, Garonne und Dordogne weitgehend platt und leicht zu bewirtschaften. Kein Weinberg, nirgends.

Schon Ende der 80er Jahre waren hier zur Weinlese 1500 Vollerntemaschinen im Einsatz, die die Trauben von den Stöcken schlugen. Kein anderes Anbaugebiet hat den Technikeinsatz so stark vorangetrieben. Darüber wird allerdings selten geredet, um das noble Image nicht zu beschädigen. Schätzungen zum Selbstkostenpreis eines großen Bordeaux beginnen bei 20 Euro. Selbst wenn man kulant zehn Euro zugibt, bleiben bei vielen renommierten Gütern 1000 bis 2000 Prozent Gewinn. Margen wie im Heroinhandel.

Von den Verkaufserfolgen des Bordelais angetrieben, haben viele Anbauregionen der Welt versucht, diese Weine zu kopieren. Sie haben die einschlägigen Rebsorten importiert und die Moste auf ähnliche Weise in kleinen Eichenholzfässern ausgebaut. In Italien, Spanien und den USA gibt es seit Jahrzehnten große Weine aus bordeauxtypischen Rebsorten, etwa den Supertoskaner Sassicaia. Und natürlich werden auch in der Pfalz, in Baden oder Rheinhessen heute tiefdunkle, gerbstoffreiche Blends nach französischem Vorbild produziert. In manchen Vergleichsverkostungen zeigt sich, dass die Kopien oft genauso gut schmecken wie die Originale, doch dem Preisgefüge, dem Absatz und Image des Bordeaux kann dies nichts anhaben. Der vielleicht beste deutsche Wein nach Bordeaux-Vorbild, die großartige „Cuvée X“ vom Pfälzer Weingut Knipser, kostet heute ab Hof 35 Euro und bleibt damit um Potenzen hinter den Spitzenpreisen des Bordelais zurück.

Die drei roten Parade-Rebsorten des großen Anbaugebiets Bordeaux sind Merlot mit 63 Prozent Flächenanteil, Cabernet-Sauvignon (25) und Cabernet-Franc (11). Allerdings besitzen die Topgüter mit Ausnahme der Region Pomerol meist höhere Cabernet-Sauvignon-Anteile. Die übrigen roten Sorten wie Petit Verdot oder Malbec spielen kaum eine Rolle. In der Regel sind Bordeauxweine keine reinsortigen Gewächse, sondern aus zwei oder drei Rebsorten komponiert. Bei 1250 Sonnenstunden im Jahr und 15 bis 20 Hitzetagen über 30 Grad können die Trauben in den meisten Jahren gut ausreifen. Atlantik, Golfstrom und die Klimaveränderung bringen warme Jahresläufe.

Charakteristisch für Bordeaux sind die strammen Tannine (Gerbstoffe). Vor allem der dickschalige, spät reifende Cabernet-Sauvignon liefert reichlich tannin-herben Geschmack, vermählt mit den typischen Aromen schwarzer Johannisbeere. Junger Bordeaux schmeckt immer etwas rau, die Tannine sind abweisend, manchmal sogar beißend. Gerbstoff und Alkohol konservieren die Weine, mit zunehmendem Alter werden sie weicher, entwickeln neue, komplexe Aromen.

Dies trifft allerdings nur auf echte Spitzenweine zu. Was beim klingenden Namen Bordeaux gern vergessen wird: Die Region produziert zwischen 700 und 900 Millionen Flaschen. Bordeaux – das sind nicht nur die großen berühmten Châteaus, auch einfache rustikale Schoppen für vier, fünf Euro sonnen sich unter dem angesehenen Namen. Es gibt billigen Fasswein, viele anständige Gewächse im mittleren Preissegment, dazu aber auch Weißweine und Süßweine wie die berühmten Sauternes. Bordeaux deckt mit seinen 60 einzelnen Unter-Weingebieten (Appellationen) alle Preisklassen und Qualitäten ab. Weinfreunde, die keine Etikettentrinker sind und für zehn oder 15 Euro einen guten Wein mit Alterungspotenzial suchen, werden vor allem in den unbekannteren Randlagen fündig,

Wer richtig teuren Bordeaux mit klingendem Namen kauft, der subskribiert die Weine in der Regel. Das heißt, er muss sie kaufen, lange bevor sie beim Weinhändler eintreffen. Über viele Jahre hatten die vom US-Weinkritiker Robert Parker vorab vergebenen Noten bei den Kaufentscheidungen der Händler und Kunden eine herausragende Bedeutung. Anfangs waren viele Franzosen empört, dass ein „Yankee“ sich zum Richter ihres Nationalgetränks erhob. Doch dessen aus der Hüfte geschossenen Benotungen und barocken Weinbeschreibungen waren schnell populär. Inzwischen schwindet der Einfluss Parkers.

Aber Bordeaux hat viele andere Botschafter, die jetzt zu den Festtagen gefragt sind. Kaminfeuer, ein großer Braten, ein alter Bordeaux – wer will da noch mit Restvernunft und Preisvergleichen kommen.

Jean Guyon et Alain Raynaud sont désormais bien connus à Bordeaux pour bouleverser les hiérarchies et

affoler toutes les dégustations à l'aveugle leur vin ayant fréquemment battu de grands crus classés dans ce

genre de compétitions. Rollan de By 2009 est un bourgeois gentilhomme svelte, élancé, élégant, que I'on

invite partout pour le seul plaisir de le voir parader avec aisance dans les hautes sphères. La robe est

pourpre aux reflets violets.

L'assemblage 70% de merlot 25% de cabernet sauvignon et 5% de petit verdot apporte au nez un bouquet

parfait de cassis de sous bois d'asphalte. L'attaque est suffisamment corsée pour impressionner. Le corps

du vin est plein. Sur le palais s'installent des framboises et des prunes à l'intérieur d'une très cosy boîte à

épices. La rétro-olfaction fait bamboche en forêt

La finale profite d'anis et de vanille grillée. Un vin d'excellente compagnie.

La bonne tenue des Crus Bourgeois 2011

Après toute une série de péripéties juridiques, la mention "cru bourgeois", qui date pourtant du XIIe siècle, vient

d'être sauvée. Cette ancienne distinction bordelaise, qui hiérarchise une partie des vins du Médoc, risquait tout

simplement de disparaître sous les coups de boutoir de la pointilleuse réglementation européenne sur l'étiquetage.

Il a fallu de toute urgence sauver le soldat Bourgeois en créant une complexe procédure d'agrément des vins qui

puisse résister aux attaques judiciaires des recalés (voir nos éditions du 17 septembre dernier). Le premier

millésime concerné est le 2008, dont la liste a été publiée en septembre 2010. Ont suivi 2009 et 2010,

deux millésimes de grande envergure, l'un gourmand à souhait, l'autre plus austère, dont malheureusement plus

une seule bouteille n'est disponible sur le marché. Le 2011 ne bénéficie pas de l'aura de ces deux prédécesseurs.

La raison ? Si la floraison est précoce et très homogène, deux épisodes défavorables se succèdent : le temps se

dégrade en juillet et le mois d'août s'avère précocement automnal. Heureusement, le beau temps revient en

septembre et les vendanges, quoique fortement étalées, se déroulent sous le soleil.

La liste des agréés de 2011 a été publiée en septembre dernier avec 256 crus bourgeois accrédités après de

longues séances de dégustation à l'aveugle contrôlées par un organisme indépendant s'appuyant sur un

contraignant cahier des charges. Rappelons que les exploitations candidates font auparavant l'objet d'une visite

d'éligibilité. Les vins du millésime 2011 sont maintenant disponibles en bouteille et ont pu enfin être

dégustés dans leur version définitive. Première constatation, il n'existe plus de "rossignols", et tous sont d'une

qualité honorable : l'agrément fonctionne bien. La mention "cru bourgeois" est un signe de qualité et il est

dorénavant possible de se fier au tout nouveau sticker. Le fait que le millésime considéré a été effectivement

dégusté est un atout indéniable. Tous les autres classements sont basés sur des performances passées,

mais ils ne donnent aucune garantie sur le millésime présent.

Une redistribution des cartes

Pourtant, tous les vins ne se valent pas. Autrefois, les crus bourgeois étaient classés en trois niveaux : les crus

bourgeois, les bourgeois supérieurs et les exceptionnels. Pour parer au plus vite, la nouvelle réglementation

ne s'est pas embarrassée de cette hiérarchisation. Cette démocratisation forcée permet cependant de

rebattre les cartes, laissant de côté tous ceux qui n'ont pas jugé bon de participer à cette renaissance, et en

particulier les crus exceptionnels d'autrefois. Une nouvelle élite se met en place.

- Léoville-Poyferré 2006

- Clarisse 2011

On ne va pas tergiverser sur la différence de prix, si ce n'est pour souligner le fossé financier que ne peuvent absolument pas justifier les différences qualitatives.

Explication de texte

On peut présenter les choses de deux façons différentes :

Mode A

"Grand Léoville-Poyferré, très classe, surtout potentiellement. Le vin est équilibré, harmonieux, élégant. On attend cependant quelques traits de caractère qui puissent générer un enthousiasme à la hauteur de sa valeur financière."

Nota : depuis ce millésime, Léoville-Poyferré a sacrément monté en qualité et devient un des vins de référence de cette appellation qui jouit, chez les amateurs, d'un respect supérieur.

"Un Clarisse étonnant, net et droit, sans angle mort, sans baisse de tension, et offrant un réel plaisir gustatif. Un excellent RQP."

Mode B

"Deux vins offrant ce jour là des plaisirs pas trop éloignés les uns des autres, certes avec une longueur d'avance sur le Léoville, mais le Clarisse n'était vraiment pas loin derrière".

En d'autres termes, une expérience où on pourrait plutôt critiquer le LP qui ne serait pas à la hauteur de ce qu'on attend d'un classé 1855, l'alternative étant de mettre en valeur le Clarisse 2011 capable de tenir un rang de belle tenue face à cette référence rive gauche.

Est-ce un crime que de faire de telles comparaisons, même sur des millésimes différents ? Que nenni car nous sommes, en bordelais, à un moment où des crus ne bénéficiant pas d'un historique inscrit dans toutes les têtes des amateurs, peuvent souvent se promener en haut de l'affiche pour titiller quelques noms bénéficiant d'avantages liés au contenant en sus des réelles qualités du contenu.

Des noms ? Facilissime : Fleur Cardinale, Haut-Carles, Reignac, Haut-Condissas, Rollan de By, La Dauphine (qui monte, qui monte…), Domaine de l'A, Jean Faure, et bien d'autres.

En y regardant de près, s'il est vrai que Bordeaux traverse une crise réelle de cote d'amour en berne, il n'empêche que c'est une source majeure de RQP au niveau mondial.

On ne s'affirme bien que par comparaison et donc, de tels comparatifs seront toujours d'actualité. Au GJE, dorénavant, les sessions seront faites sur le modèle de la dernière : un double comparatif : d'abord à l'aveugle et ensuite avec liste des vins servis. Juste histoire de constater le surcroît ou le déficit de notoriété qu'apporte l'étiquette du vin.

Noch nie hatten wir bei den Tagesspiegelsieben Jurymitglieder haben den Siegerwein auf den ersten Platz gesetzt. Der schmeckt wirklich allen, er überzeugt mit aromatischer Nase und elegantem Auftritt. Alle sieben Kandidaten zeigten sich schon jetzt sehr zugänglich. Von der früheren Kratschmecken. Für eine allzu lange Einlagerung im Keller sind Weine in dieser Preisklasse ohnehin nicht geeignet. Aber bis 2020 sollte ihr Potenzial schon reichen.

Jenseits der sündteuren Prestigeflaschen gibt es aus dem großen Anbaugebiet attraktive Weine im mittleren Jahrgänge 2009 und 2010 in der

Preisklasse bis 20 Euro getestet. Sieben Kandidaten von sieben Berliner Weinhändlern waren angestellt, Schema bewertet. Damit der Wein in

seinem natürlichen Habitat als Essensbegleiter bewertet wird, haben wir den sieben Jurorinnen und Juroren

Weinproben ein solch eindeutiges Votum der Jury. Gleich fünf der sieben Jurymitglieder haben den Siegerwein auf den ersten Platz gesetzt. Der schmeckt wirklich allen, er überzeugt mit aromatischer Nase und elegantem Auftritt. Alle sieben Kandidaten zeigten sich schon jetzt

All Bordeaux can be different ... Beyond the outrageously expensive prestige bottles from the great Bordeaux wine-growing region, we have attractive Chateaux in the medium and moderate price segment. We have tasted vintages 2009 and 2010 in the price range up to 20 euros – and found some really good wines. Seven candidates from seven Berlin wine merchants were blind-tasted and evaluated through the 20-point scheme often use. This wine is rated in the same conditions. Get something that will surprise your guests

It's decided, for Christmas you'll embark on cooking the great recipes of great historical dishes that made the glory of French cuisine. Obviously, you must choose fine wines accordingly. Who is the star of the evening ? The wine or the lovingly prepared dishes ? If you have invested a lot in the kitchen, a priori, it's your meal. Then choose a wine that highlights the recipe and does not compete. Take a well-known label, a nice wine, but in a lesser vintage reputation.

There is no need to spend a fortune to party. Playing cleverly, it is quite possible to find beautiful bottles, even in supermarkets. Try wines from less prestigious appellations, who deserve attention ; despite their names, they work hard to stand out. When inviting friends for dinner, feeling is needed. To maintain it, nothing like a beautiful bottle, especially in its format : the magnum will make strong impression and it imposes. Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux at the Grand Hôtel

"A property that departed from the traditional Médoc was Château Rollan de By, unusual in that it uses a high proportion of

merlot. But this is less surprising when considering that Alain Raynaud is a consultant. The 2010 contains 70 % merlot and felt

like a good companion to a rare entrecote today. But it also has great future potential in the cellar. (Available for around 20

euro in Sweden.)

The owner, the architect Jean Guyon, also owns several other estates in the Médoc in what is called the Domaines de Rollan

de By, including Chateau Haut Condissas who was represented by both a 2008 (45-50 euro in Sweden) and a 2009. Both

glorious examples of a young Bordeaux. The 2009 in particular with great aging potential."

The vast majority of wine producers in Bordeaux make wines at very reasonable prices, and often of very good quality.

Unfortunately on tends too easily to only think of the now very expensive “classified” chateaux in the Medoc, Graves and Saint

Emilion and their un-classified but equally famous cousins in Pomerol. It is a mistake to believe that all of Bordeaux is at this

exalted level of prices.

Unfortunately, the chateau in the medium price range, say between 10 and 25 euro have difficulties getting noticed (not least in

Sweden where there is a big monopoly buyer). But now Le Grand Cercle has decided to change this. They came in force to

Stockholm and presented their wines. BKWine’s Carl-Erik Kanne was there and tasted. He gathered a lot of recommendations on

excellent Bordeaux wines for reasonable monies!

Grand Cercle des vins de Bordeaux, is the imposing title of a new association of wine producers in Bordeaux with the intention

to promote wines from both the “left” and the “right” bank of the Gironde / Garonne.

The association has been created thank to the enthusiast Alain Raynaud who wanted to bring together the efforts made by the

Cercle Rive Droite and Cercle Rive Gauche. Cercle Rive Droite was established in July 2002 and represents a sample of about 140

estates whose keyword is excellence. The sister organization Cercle Rive Gauche was formed in 2013 and currently includes

some 50 estates specially selected for their high quality wines.

This, the younger the organization, is supposed to be able to take advantage of the work already done in the older one to

promote good wines from Medoc, Graves, Sauternes and Barsac.

The tasting intended to showcase many high quality Bordeaux wines available at affordable prices. It can perhaps be seen as a

reaction against the increasingly expensive “prestige wines” from the more well-known chateaux.

Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux thus consists of the entire 188 properties in 31 different appellations!

It illustrates well that even in Bordeaux a lot has happened in recent years for example by former “volume” focussed areas

raising quality and now classified in their own smaller AOC areas. The best example is the former big “Entre-Deux-Mers”

between the rivers Garonne and Dordogne, which now contains a large number of small appellations.

Producers in le Grand Cercle have a shared vision of excellence and a desire to express their wines unique personalities.

Members also have a common ethical approach to the handling of grapes and wines and how wines are marketed.

The wines are quality assured by a tasting twice a year and receive a special stamp that may be placed on a wine label. The

tasters are independent and the tastings are blind. So far, the GJE (Grand Jury Européen) has done the tastings. They have

adopted the “Parker” 100-point scale for comparability.

The Circle comes to Stockholm

Some 40 producers had responded favourably to the invitation to exhibit in the Hall of Mirrors at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm,

and more than 100 wines were available to taste.

A veritable challenge as very much was very good. But if I take the reds first and start from the southeast on the right bank so I

come to…

Bordeaux “côtes”

In Sainte-Foy Bordeaux we have Château Hostens-Picant: their 2010 has lovely fruit and good freshness and length in the finish

that bode well for the next 10-15 years. This wine is 56 % merlot and 44 % cabernet franc which are organically grown. It also

produces white wines (see below).

Straight to the west before we reach the Garonne, we find Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux and Château Clos Chamont from the

years 2011, 2010 and 2009, and 2004, all with a blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Interesting contrasts between vintages

and stages of development. 2011 cooler character compared against the hot vintages 2009 and 2010.

I found the 2009 more elegant, while the 2010 had a lot of power and good balance to for a good future development.

Fronsac, once more prestigious than Pomerol

Turning the nose to the northeast, we see the small Fronsac area and the even smaller Canon-Fronsac on the other side of the

Dordogne. Here I first found Chateau Dalem whose 2010 contained very dark fruit and nice barrel character, good structure and

a long smooth finish. 90% merlot, 10% cabernet franc from 45 year old vines. Fermentation in cement tanks for 3-4 weeks. 18

months of ageing in a mixture of new and old barriques.

Also exciting from Fronsac was the property Haut Carles where the new owners of a few years, Constance and Stéphane

Droulers, try to restore the reputation of Fronsac wines as better than Pomerol. As was the prestige ranking of the two regions

during much of the 1800s!

Both Jean-Luc Thunevin and Alain Raynaud have been involved in this project. The wine, Haut Carles Fronsac, made from 90%

merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% malbec did not disappoint. Very good fruit concentration, strong tannins and high acidity. An

impressive wine, especially after a few more years in the cellar.

From the very small Canon Fronsac appellation came Château Les Roches Gaby 2010 which may be regarded as belonging to the

modern-style Bordeaux wines with a soft, fruity style at a great price (around 15 euros in Sweden).

Pomerol and its satellites

Next door to Fronsac, to the east, lies first Pomerol, perhaps best known for its Chateau Pétrus. But there is fortunately much

more than that to choose from. For example, the Château Siaurac whose 2010 had great promises of good years ahead. The

property has the same owner as Le Prieuré in St. Emilion (see below), Aline Guichard.

If we continue in Pomerol we find Clos Vieux Taillefer, whose 2010 was promising with good structure and a fine long taste.

The Château Fayat 2010 felt very approachable already now which is not so strange when you consider that Jean Luc Thunevin

has been a partner and is now a consultant to the property. He is very fond of fresh fruit!

In the neighbouring commune of Lalande de Pomerol I found Château Perron “La Fleur” 2009: a bottle with concentrated dark

fruit from 100 % merlot from 65-year-old vines. It needs a few more years in the cellar to be really enjoyable.

Saint Emilion

After Pomerol we move on to St. Emilion. It may be worth recalling that the classification here differs from that in the Medoc.

From 1954 it was divided into three groups, unlike the 5 Médoc groups of 1855. The three in St. Emilion (last updated 2012) are

1er Grand Cru Classé (with 18 chateau, with the variants “A” and “B”), Grand Cru Classé (64 chx), and Grand Cru. Others are

referred to as simply St. Emilion AOC.

There were several Grand Cru Classés to taste, such as Château La Marzelle with a variety of vintages. 2003an was wonderful to

drink now.

The estates Château La Commanderie and Clos des Jacobins have the same owners / winemakers, Thibault and Magali

Decoster. Since they bought the properties they have completed thorough renovations of the facilities to improve quality.

The Commanderies 2009 with 80 % merlot and 20 % cabernet franc is delicious to drink young with lots of soft fruit and

balanced tannins. Jacobin presented a 2006 which was full of dark fruit, a very well-balanced wine enjoyable now and for years

to come.

Another well-made wine of the 2009 vintage came from Château Fleur Cardinale (45 euro in Sweden): 70 % merlot and 15 %

each of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon.

Also deserving mention was Clos Les Grand Verse Annes in 2008, made from grapes from 50-year-old vines. A wine with lots of

concentration; Château La Grangère 2009; and last but not least, the second wine of Château Le Prieuré, Délice du Prieuré from

2011, delicious to drink now in his youth.

West, towards the left bank of the river

After this excursion on the Right Bank with merlot dominating in the cuvées it was time to visit the producers of reds on the Left

Bank, notably Medoc and its surroundings.

The wines are mostly dominated by cabernet sauvignon and they felt generally tighter and less approachable now compared to

their cousins on “the other side”. Although none of the classified grand cru wines were represented in this collection I still felt

that the quality level of those represented was high and promising well for the future.

Along the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan

If I have to select a few it will be Chateau d’ Agassac from Haut-Médoc; the wines were from 2010, 2009, and 2007 where the

2007 impressed already today, with almost 50% merlot. Fruity, well balanced with soft tannins, to be enjoyed now and in the

future. Both the 2009 and the 2010 promised more pleasures in the future.

Another property that departed from the traditional Médoc was Château Rollan de By, unusual in that it

From Moulis in central Medoc, I found a nice wine in the form of Château Brillette and their 2009 with 50/50 merlot/cabernet

sauvignon.

The Lurton family was represented by three estates in Pessac-Léognan (see more below) where I thought the Château Cruzeau

2010 felt to give most value for money, but it is unfortunately not available in Sweden yet.

What could then be more appropriate than to finish the red part of the tasting with yet one more wine from Margaux, namely

Chateau d’ Arsac 2011 showing great potential with power and concentration of fruit today? Would be interesting serve it with

a red piece of meat. But it will probably be even more into its own after a few years in the cellar.

A White AfternoonThe dry white wines were pretty sparse, but a few deserve mention here. I start with Château Thieuley Cuvée

Francis Courselle 2010 made from 50/50 sauvignon blanc and sémillon giving good fresh acidity and also body with nice hint of

vanilla from the oak barrels. A beautiful food wine in traditional Bordeaux style.

Back to where our red exploration, started in the appellation Sainte-Foy- Bordeaux, I return to the producer Château Hostens-

Picant who also offered a well-made wine from semillon / sauvignon blanc with a little muscadelle. Fresh, fruity with a good

round mouth-feel from careful use of oak.

Château Le Sartre in Pessac-Léognan presented a small white gem from 2010. (Approx. 20 euro in Sweden.)

From the larger Graves region we are after all spoiled with many great white food wines. Chateau Brondelle Grand Vin 2011 was

no exception.

From the same area, AOC Graves, the Lurton family was well represented with three producers in different price and quality

ranges where Château de Rochemorin started at the lowest level and Chateau Couhins-Lurton was the highest.

In between, there was the Château de Cruzeau whose 2010 was a very typical sauvignon blanc wine. (Rochemorin blanc 2009

available for around 16 euro and Couhins-Lurton blanc for some 30 euro in Sweden.)

Sweets in Sauternes

With the palate well-exercised by all the tannins from the many red goodies, it felt nice to rinse out and take on the sweets from

Sauternes.

Here were both Château Raymond Lafon and Chateau Closiot represented, both with 2009s and although the latter defended

the colours of Sauternes very well the former had more of everything and above all a lovely tension between high acidity and

sweetness accompanied by botrytis aromas!

The circle closes

In conclusion, it is interesting to note how the pendulum swings between left and right, not just in politics.

Interest in the right river bank increases as the prices on the left go up, after having lived for a long time in the shadows of their

more famous left bank neighbour. If we go back to the 14th century and just over a century onwards, when the British

practically owned Bordeaux, all production was concentrated on the right bank and its hinterland upstream. Medoc was not

even on the map as a wine region.
