Sea turtles are some of the most majestic and ancient creatures on Earth. For over 100 million years, they have traversed the seas, surviving multiple mass extinctions and playing critical roles in maintaining healthy, marine food webs. Not only do these friendly animals captivate us, but their journeys of survival are also equally fascinating.

In the 3D Dome Show “Turtle Odyssey 3D”, we will join Bunji, a sea turtle for a remarkable adventure. Bunji’s journey starts from the moment her fragile egg cracks below the warm sand of an Australian beach. Having traversed thousands of kilometres of open oceans, she returns after decades with mysterious precision back to the very beach where she was born to lay eggs and start the next generation.

With Bunji as our guide, we will meet an astonishing range of strange and compelling creatures from enormous breaching whales, massive manta rays to vibrant clownfish. We will be reminded of just how interconnected we all are and moved to cherish these beautiful and vulnerable sea turtles even more.

The Space Theatre of the Hong Kong Space Museum will be temporarily closed from 1 May for refurbishment. The Space Theatre is expected to reopen in July next year to bring an improved new visual experience to the public.

The major work of the refurbishment project consists of replacing the dome screen. The existing dome screen, installed in 1996, is composed of more than 400 pieces of curved aluminium panels, which form a hemispherical surface with visible overlapped junctions. The new seamless dome screen, with applied NanoSeam technology, will upgrade the quality of sky shows by improving their brightness and resolution.

Astronomical Phenomenon

The most spectacular astronomical event of the year, the partial solar eclipse, will happen in the city sky on 21 June. The partial eclipse will begin at 2:37 pm, when the Sun is about 59.6 degrees above the western horizon. Greatest eclipse (when the centre of the Moon is closest to the centre of the Sun) will occur at 4:08 pm. The eclipse will last for 2 hours 47 minutes and end at 5:24 pm.

Cause of Solar Eclipse

When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and they become in line, the Earth will enter the Moon’s shadow. The observers under the shadow will see the Sun being obscured by the Moon. Since the Moon's orbit around the Earth is not in the same plane as the Earth's orbit around the Sun, solar eclipse does not occur every month. For any one place, a partial solar eclipse can be seen every two to three years on average, while the chance of seeing a total solar eclipse is more remote.

Partial Solar Eclipse

The solar eclipse is visible in Africa and Asia. Those who want to observe the annular solar eclipse may travel to cities that lie within the annular solar eclipse path.

的面積越大。日全食的食分是 1 或大於 1;

JSEX/JSEX-AS.html)

Definition of the Magnitude of a Eclipse

What makes this partial solar eclipse seen in Hong Kong a striking one? Because the magnitude of this partial solar eclipse will reach 0.893, which means about 85% of the solar disc will be blocked by the Moon at the greatest eclipse. The magnitude of eclipse is the fraction of the apparent diameter of a celestial body being obscured. It is a parameter that applies to both solar eclipse and lunar eclipse. The closer the magnitude of a partial eclipse is to 1, the larger proportion of the celestial body is being covered. The magnitude of a total solar eclipse is 1 or greater, whereas it is always between 0 and 1 for a partial or annular solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse will not be visible in Hong Kong in the next hundred years, and a partial solar eclipse with magnitude larger than this will not occur in the next 50 years (till 2070) for Hong Kong! (source: NASA https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/JSEX/JSEX-AS.html)

The magnitude of a solar eclipse is defined as the fraction of the apparent diameter of the Sun. (along the line passing through the centres of the Sun and the Moon) being obscured.

(Formula: Magnitude = BC / AB)

0.46)。

The Space Museum captured the moment when the greatest eclipse occured on 26 December last year. 35% of the solar disc area was blocked by the Moon (magnitude is 0.46).

Ways to Observe the Solar Eclipse

Although part of the Sun will be blocked during the eclipse, the intensity of sunlight is still strong enough to cause permanent damage to our eyes if we look at the Sun directly with our naked eyes. Never look at the Sun directly with naked eyes during the entire eclipse. The Space Museum recommends the following safe solar observing methods to the public:

太空館亦會於當天舉辦日偏食觀測活動,有關活動詳情請留意太空館網站內公布。

Space Museum will organise a partial solar observation activity on the eclipse day.Details of the activity will be announced at the Space Museum’s website.

These disparities can relate to many topics, including ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and identity, socioeconomic background, education level, physical ability, political affiliation and religious beliefs.

With the theme “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion”, International Museum Day 2020 aims at becoming a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities and personnel of museums, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.

Participating Units

This year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 16-17 May 2020 (Saturday and Sunday), and over those two days, visitors will be admitted free (except for special exhibitions and programmes with an admission fee) to LCSD museums, as well as most of the other participating venues, where a wide range of public programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!

In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has been responding to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.

The theme of IMD 2020 is “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion 2020”. The potential of museums to create meaningful experiences for peoples of all origins and backgrounds is central to their social value. As agents of change and trusted institutions, there is no time like the present for museums to demonstrate their relevance by engaging constructively in the political, social, and cultural realities of modern society.

The challenges of inclusion and diversity and the dif ficulty of navigating complex social issues in increasingly polarised environments, while not unique to museums and cultural institutions, are important ones, due to the high regard in which museums are held by society.

An increasing public expectation for social change has catalysed a conversation around museums’ potential for social good in the form of exhibitions, conferences, performances, education programmes, and initiatives created. However, there remains much to do to overcome conscious and subconscious power dynamics that can create disparities within museums, and between museums and their visitors.

The Shape of Black Holes( 英語講解 To be conducted in English )

What do black holes tell us about the Universe? How can we see them, if not even light can escape black holes? After a hundred years of studying black holes, how much do we know now about the most elusive objects in the Universe? In 2015, scientists discovered ripples in the fabric of spacetime from the violent collision of two black holes, now known as gravitational waves. These gravitational waves, detected by kilometre-scale detectors around the world, give a rare insight into black holes and the Universe. In this lecture, we will show how gravitational waves are used to “see” black holes and study their enigmatic properties.

From the Night Sky to the “God Particle” ... and Back( 英語講解 To be conducted in English )

The night sky often leads us to the sense of awe and mystery at the heart of our search for meaning. The deep need to better understand those dim lights in the sky sparked a long and surprising intellectual journey through the sky, the world around us, the subatomic realm and the deep connections between all of these domains. We will talk about some of those connections, and how they led to the proposal, search for, and discovery of the so-called “God Particle” - the Higgs boson - and its relation to the small- and large-scale structure of the Universe.

The late physicist Stephen Hawking explains why he thinks humans need to colonise another planet – with the dangers of overpopulation, climate change, a potential nuclear warfare and a possible asteroid strike, he concludes that we need to leave the Earth in the next 100 years.

In order to explore a galaxy of Exoplanets in search of one which might be habitable by humans, an Engineering Professor, Danielle, and a student of Hawking, Christophe then travel to the Atacama Desert in Chile to visit one of the world’s largest telescopes. Having found a possible candidate, they look at new forms of space technology which might be able to transport us there – travelling to Houston to meet astronaut Franklin Chang Diaz.
