In Germany the polycentric urban system forms the historical basis for the development and profiling of metropolitan functions.
The metropolitan functions of diverse metropolises are interlinked in a spatial nexus.

„European Metropolitan Regions“ –following a resolution of the conference of the German ministers for spatial planning –in a first step:Berlin/ Brandenburg, Hamburg, Munich,Rhine-Main, Rhine-Ruhr and Stuttgart,
as well as the potential metropolitan region, the so called Sachsendreieck: Halle/ Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz;this list was complemented by Hannover-Braunschweig-Göttingen,Bremen-Oldenburg, Rhine-Neckar & Nuremberg.

Qu’est-ce que c’est une IBA –une Exposition Internationale de la Construction où d’Urbanisme?
C’est un format spécifiquement allemand.
Autrefois les IBAs étaient conçu comme « promoteurs »d’une nouvelle culture architecturale et de l’urbanisme

Aujourd'hui une IBA est avant tout
un laboratoire à durée limitée –équipé avec des conditions exceptionnellespour le développement des solutions modèles.
L’IBA prends « congé » des routines administratives.
Elle a besoin d’un soutien politique, d’un enthousiasme de ses initiateurs;d'une mobilisations des expertises disponibles etd’un calcul intelligent pour les chances de réalisation.
