Cette édition ne déroge pas à la règle et présente les films qui font et feront l’histoire du cinéma, au- delà des écrans, des tendances, des supports, des modes de diffusion. « Être dans le vent c’est avoir le destin des feuilles mortes » et nous voulons être la vie. Perdurer au-delà des modes est célébrer l’excellence des grands noms du cinéma, mais surtout découvrir et accompagner les nouveaux visages de la production made in USA, en invitant pour présenter leur travail, jeunes réalisateurs, comédiens et comédiennes. Cette année est riche de quinze premiers films visibles dans la sélection. La création de la section « Le Nouvel Hollywood » marque la volonté inaltérée de partager le plaisir de découvrir de nouvelles formes et de nouveaux talents, de saisir chaque année, à travers la programmation, l’élan et la vitalité d’une cinématographie en constante évolution. « La créativité est contagieuse, faites-la tourner », une devise que le festival de Deauville se plait à poursuivre et à partager avec le plus large des publics. Le 18 juillet 1969, la jeune Mary Jo Kopechne, directrice de campagne du sénateur Ted Kennedy, meurt noyée après que ce dernier eut perdu le contrôle de sa voiture en tentant de traverser le tristement célèbre pont Dike, sur l’île de Chappaquiddick dans l’État du Massachusetts. Cet événement a non seulement coûté la vie à une future stratège politique proche des Kennedy, mais il a intrinsèquement changé le cours de l'histoire présidentielle, en mettant au grand jour les rouages intimes du pouvoir

politique, l'influence de la plus célèbre famille des États-Unis, ainsi que la fragilité de Ted Kennedy, le fils cadet accusé d'avoir laissé mourir Mary Jo Kopechne, dans l'ombre de son héritage familial. On July 18, 1969, young Mary Jo Kopechne, the campaign worker of Senator Ted Kennedy, died by drowning as Ted Kennedy drove his car off the infamous Dike Bridge, on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts. Not only did this event take the life of an aspiring political strategist and Kennedy insider, but it ultimately changed the course of presidential history forever. It exposed the broad reach of political power, the influence of America’s most celebrated family; and the vulnerability of Ted Kennedy, the youngest son, in the shadow of his family legacy.

Jason Clarke démarre sa carrière de comédien en Australie, avant de séduire Hollywood et les cinéastes qui lui ont fait confiance tels que Michael Mann, qui lui offre un rôle dans Public Enemies. Star de Terminator : Genisys d’Alan Taylor, La Planète des Singes : L’Affrontement de Matt Reeves, Zero Dark Thirty de Kathryn Bigelow, et plus récemment Everest de Baltasar Kormákur, présenté à Deauville en 2015, Jason Clarke s’est peu à peu imposé comme une figure incontournable du cinéma américain. Plus récemment il s’est illustré dans Mudbound de Dee Rees, et Le Secret des Kennedy de John Curran, pour lequel son interprétation de Ted Kennedy lui a valu un accueil critique enthousiaste. Il sera prochainement à l’affiche du nouveau film de Damien Chazelle : First Man ainsi que de Serenity de Steven Knight, avant de rejoindre Helen Mirren sur le tournage de la mini-série HBO Catherine the Great. GALVESTON de/by Mélanie Laurent Le Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville est heureux d’accueillir le film Galveston, ainsi que sa réalisatrice, Mélanie Laurent, qui s’inscrit dans la lignée des comédiennes et comédiens passés avec talent à la réalisation. En 2011, son premier long-métrage, Les Adoptés, affirme son statut de cinéaste, confirmé par Respire, Plonger et le très beau documentaire Demain qu’elle co-réalise avec Cyril Dion. Avec Galveston, à la mise en scène impressionnante de maîtrise, elle signe sa première incursion aux Etats-Unis. Son travail s’inscrit dans l’avenir qu’entend dessiner le Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville. The Deauville American Film Festival is pleased to welcome the film Galveston, as well as its director, Mélanie Laurent, who joins a long line of actors and actresses who have turned their talents to directing. In 2011, her first feature The Adopted heralded her arrival as a filmmaker, a status confirmed by Breathe and the beautiful documentary Tomorrow which she co-directed with Cyril Dion.
