Geopark ? Un Géoparc mondial UNESCO est un label décerné par l’UNESCO à un espace territorial qui présente et valorise
un héritage géologique d’importance internationale. Il vise le développement durable d’une région. L’UNESCO favorise en cela la réappropriation du patrimoine naturel et culturel par les habitants.
Le Geopark Famenne-Ardenne (911 km2 - 67.228 habitants), associe les communes de Beauraing, Durbuy, Hotton, Marche-en-Famenne, Nassogne, Rochefort, Tellin et Wellin. Situé essentiellement en « Calestienne », bande calcaire caractéristique et fil conducteur du Geopark, ce territoire englobe le bassin hydrologique de trois rivières (la Lesse, la Lomme et l’Ourthe). Il présente un extraordinaire potentiel géologique et l’un des plus riches de Belgique et d’Europe en phénomènes karstiques, largement valorisé à des fins patrimoniales, touristiques et scientifiques. Durant le Mé-sozoïque et le Cénozoïque, un climat chaud et humide altère profondément les roches calcaires. Ensuite, le socle ar-dennais se soulève, le réseau hydrographique s’enfonce et les grottes se forment créant des systèmes « recoupement souterrain de méandre » et « perte – résurgence » dont les plus longs dépassent les 10 km de développement. Grottes et falaises, rivières souterraines uniques, sites d’intérêts scientifiques, roches et sédiments, témoins de paléoclimats et de paléoenvironnements caractéristiques, paysages, large biodiversité, patrimoine bâti,…trouvent leurs origines dans notre environnement et la nature du sol.
Een UNESCO Global Geopark is een is een geografisch gebied met een sterke identiteit dat het onderscheidt van andere gebieden en dat kan bogen op landschappen en geologisch erfgoed van wereldniveau. Een UNESCO Global Geopark streeft voor de duurzame ontwikkeling van een gebied. Hierbij is het belangrijk dat de inwoners zich bewust worden van hun uniek natuurlijk erfgoed, zo kunnen ze een verbondenheid met hun streek voelen.Het Famenne-Ardenne Geopark, met een oppervlakte van 911km² voor 67. 228 inwoners, verenigt de gemeentes van Beauraing, Durbuy, Hotton, Marche-en-Famenne, Nassogne, Rochefort, Tellin en Wellin. Het Geopark ligt voor het grootste deel in de “Calestienne”- een smalle kalksteenstrook die als het ware de leidraad van onze Geopark vormt - met een grondgebied dat zich uitstrekt over drie verschillende stroomgebieden; dat van de Lesse, de Lomme en de Ourthe. Het gebied kan bogen op een uitzonderlijk geologisch erfgoed, er zijn hier meer karstverschijnselen te bewon-deren dan waar dan ook in België, en zelfs in Europa!Zowel op het gebied van toerisme, erfgoed als wetenschappelijk onderzoek wordt dit uitzonderlijk erfgoed in de verf gezet. Door het warme en vochtig klimaat dat tijdens het Mesozoïcum en het Mesozoïcum heerste, zullen de kalk-steenrotsen grondige wijzigingen ondergaan. Daarna verhief de schiervlakte van de van de Ardennen zich; door deze opheffing werden de rivieren gedwongen zich dieper in te snijden. Zo werden grotten gevormd, werden meanders door de ondergrondse rivier afgesneden, en ontstonden typische “verdwijngaten & resurgenties” systemen, met rivieren die soms meer dan 10km lang onder de grond stromen.Grotten en rotswanden, unieke ondergrondse rivieren, sites van groot wetenschappelijk belang, rotsen en gesteenten die ge-tuigen van karakteristieke paleoklimaten en paleo-omgevingen, landschappen, een grote biodiversiteit, bebouwd erfgoed,…allen hebben hun ontstaan te danken aan onze unieke omgeving en bodemsamenstelling.
A UNESCO Global Geopark is a single, unified geographical area which boasts geological heritage sites and land-scapes of international geological significance. A UNESCO Global Geopark strives for the sustainable development of an area, and tries to raise local awareness of its distinctive natural and cultural heritage, enabling locals to feel a sense of pride and strengthen their identification with their area.
The Famenne-Ardenne Geopark, with a surface area of 911km² and a population of 67.288, associates the councils of Beauraing, Durbuy, Hotton, Marche-en-Famenne, Nassogne, Rochefort, Tellin and Wellin. Our Geopark is mainly located in the “Calestienne” area, a typical strip of limestone, which is the unifying thread of our Geopark, which also comprises three distinct River basins: the Lesse, the Lomme and the Ourthe.The area offers and unique geological potential, and boasts the largest number of karstic phenomena in Belgium as well as Europe. These phenomena are of great interest and are highlighted in different fields: heritage protection, tourism, and scientific research. During the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic era, the limestone rocks will be deeply altered by the warm and humid climate. Later, the Ardennes bedrock was uplifted, causing the rivers to cut deeper into their channels. Caves were formed, favouring the formation of underground meander cut-offs as well as “swallow-hole/resurgence” systems. Some of these rivers follow an underground course that can exceed 10km. Caves and cliffs, unique underground rivers, sites of great scientific interest, rocks and sediments bearing the traces of distinctive paleoclimates and paleoenvironments, landscapes, a high level of biodiversity, and our built heritage are the direct result of both our environment and distinctive soil type.
