See also how information to customers regarding housing loans offered by the Bank has been enhanced. The staff in the Purchasing Division offered help to refugees and migrants, in response to a call from the Red Cross. You can then read about the first of two meetings – taking place in 2016 – for European Ombudsmen in Athens, which was organized by the office of NBG’s Customer Ombudsman. The Bank, as official sponsor of the Greek Athletics Federation for the five-year period 2014-2019 took part with its own team of runners in the Athens Authentic Marathon and Semi-Marathon and the Run Greece races. The meeting closed with the award ceremony of the 2nd i-dea innovation competition for NBG personnel. A host of innovative proposals were again submitted in this year's competition aiming at enhancing customer service, developing new services, as well as improving and speeding up procedures.

Retail Banking

The i-dea innovation competition's target is to promote and reward cutting-edge ideas by NBG personnel that aim at enhancing customer service, developing

and/or improving services and products, simplifying and speeding up procedures and, in general, promoting innovation in NBG. This year the participation was high, since more than 100 proposals were submitted in the

period 11.12.2015 to 15.1.2016. The proposals were evaluated by the relevant NBG Units on the basis of the following criteria: innovation, customer and bank benefit, and feasibility of implementation. 12 of them that gained the highest scores were shortlisted. On 22.3.2016 the 12 shortlisted proposals were presented to the Final Evaluation Committee, comprised of the heads of the relevant Units that had already evaluated the proposals, as well as the competent General Managers.

The Final evaluation ceremony

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve and simplify processes so as to ease the load on the Bank's staff, the project on clearing and unifying circulars regarding payment of third party dues via money orders and direct debit/ recurring payments was completed at the beginning of this year. A special Project Team with the participation of relevant officers from the Business Analysis, Business Processes, Group Global Transaction Services, Corporate Key Account Services and Branch Network Strategy Divisions carried out this project. Under the old procedure, each time an Organization was included in the Bank's payment systems, a respective Service Circular was issued. This practice resulted in the issuance of many relevant Circulars due to the massive increase in the number of the Organizations included in the Bank's payment systems in recent years.

In line with the procedure established by Service Circular 24/2.2.2016, the branch network is informed when new Organizations join the payment system via Internal Communication, while the particulars of each new member of the system can be found in a pivot table available in the Bank's Electronic Library. The basic concepts and the main characteristics of third party payments, as well as a summary with the key steps of the process and a detailed Manual describing the Bank's payment systems and payment operations, are included in the new unified Circular. Also, this project resulted in the unifying of 11 core Service Circulars as regards third party payments (issued in 2001-2015), while more than 350 respective Circulars containing over 1000 pages of guidelines were incorporated and abolished.

NBG has participated since almost the inception of this competition, which is held every two years, showcasing cutting-edge initiatives in the sphere of attracting customers and service provision, and managing to win several distinctions. Again this year, the Bank's Marketing Division prepared and submitted to the Evaluation Committee three detailed proposals with new products/services for consideration in the competition. And NBG succeeded in gaining three prizes. In particular, the Bank won: 1st prize for go4more, Customer Loyalty Program in the Customer Relation Development and Administration category, as well as 1st prize for PREMIUM, distribution model in the Distribution Network Development and Administration category.

Also, the Bank won the "Marketing Excellence Grand Award", the most important distinction of the competition, for its go4more Customer Loyalty Program in the Customer Relation Development and Administration category. The program offers multiple redeem options, without limits and restrictions, at over 10,000 businesses through a wide range of partner businesses and for selected products of the Bank. The analysis of the Bank's clientele and identification of different customer groups with common characteristics but different needs led to the design and deployment of our targeted Premium Banking service model. At 372 branches, 489 expert officers of the branch network manage a total of 164,000 selected customers and a substantial level of funds (13.6 million), offering them an integrated package of banking products, investment options and benefits. The National Bank of Greece Ombudsman’s Office hosted the European Ombudsman-Mediation Meeting in Athens on March 17-18 2016. The meeting brought together Ombuds from across different sectors including supranational organizations (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, World Health Organization), multinational private sector corporations (Mars Inc., OMV Petrom, NBG Group), consultancy firms (McKinsey & Co) and Ombuds services providers (RCC-Risk Communication Concepts).

The event was addressed by Mr. Dimitris Pavlakis, the Hellenic Ombudsman for Banking and Investment Services (HOBIS) who in his capacity as the Chairman of the E-Ben Hellas (European Business Ethics Network Hellas) Ambassadors Club advocated for the value of Ethics in business transactions and Ms Dimitra Triantafyllou, LLM, Mediator, Trainer of Mediators and CiARB Arbitrator who proposed alternative ways of delivering value to the organization.

During the event the NBG Ombudsman, Ms Konstantina Vitoratou, presented aspects of her practice and shared some thoughts about the possible effect of the evolving ADR landscape in the EU on the Ombuds function. The workshops that were held following each presentation offered “a lot of food for thought” and the participants seized the opportunity to delve into deep meaningful discussions on how best to increase the function’s ROI and promote its role in the organizational and corporate sectors. The participants agreed that it was a very good meeting in terms of substance and assessed different courses of action that may have to be explored in detail before the next meeting of the group that will be hosted by Transparency International in Berlin in October 2016.

Easier admittance to customs simplifications Greater supply chain predictability and

planning enhancement Indirect benefits: Improvement of internal processes and

company assurance as a result of the investments needed to meet the stricter criteria required for certification

AEOs can find it easier to qualify for other international certifications (authorized agent/consignee, ISPS etc.)

Within the framework of AEO mutual recognition programs between EU and third countries (i.e. USA, Japan), the AEOs are recognized in these countries too, and as a result enjoy similar benefits during customs formalities in the said countries, while also gaining access to new markets and new opportunities. PAEGAE's AEOF certification is yet another important step within the framework of the Company's business strategy to expand the range of services offered to its existing customers and to attracting new customers.

In this work, the British historian Eric Hobsbawm examines and interprets the momentous changes brought on by the French Revolution and the British Industrial Revolution. The sixty-year period between 1789, when Louis XVI still reigned, and 1848, when Marx and Engels published the Communist Manifesto, was for Europe an age of twin revolutions, which provoked the biggest social transformation to have occurred in the world since ancient times. The so-called Ancien Régime rapidly collapsed before the forces of the new capitalist nations. New roads opened up to science, philosophy, religion, the arts. New methods were applied to the conduct of war and diplomacy, industry, trade and state governance. New words were generated to give expression to new ideas. The global revolution, which overflowed from the dual cups of Britain and France, initially evolved into the expansion of Europe across the rest of the world. Indeed, one of the key consequences of this expansion and conquest for world history was that it imposed the primacy of a number of western regimes (particularly the British) on the rest of the planet, an unprecedented occurrence in the annals of human history. Before the merchants, steam engines, ships and cannons of the West, but also before its ideas, the ancient civilizations and empires of the world buckled and collapsed.

Until 1848, it seemed that nothing could stand in the way of conquest by Europe, as long as the governments and merchants of the West considered it in their interest to seize control. The history of this dual revolution, however, is not merely the tale of the triumph of the new bourgeois class. It is also the tale of the emergence of forces which, within a century of 1848, would transform the expansion into contraction. Eric Hobsbawm (b. Alexandria 1917, d. London 2012) studied in Vienna, Berlin, London and Cambridge. He was a member of the British Academy and honorary member of King’s College of the University of Cambridge, and taught at Birkbeck College of the University of London. Apart from The Age of Revolution, 1789-1848, MIET publications has also translated and published in Greek Hobsbawm’s follow up volumes The Age of Capital, 1848-1875, and The Age of Empire, 1875-1914.

Konstantinos Maleas (Constantinople 1879 – Athens 1928), “Acropolis” Oil on canvas, 49 × 69 cm

On finishing school at the Phanar Greek Orthodox College, Konstantinos Maleas went on to study architecture at the Istanbul Polytechnic School. In the period 1901-1908 he lived in Paris, where he attended art classes given by the neo-Impressionist Henri Martin, and went on to graduate from the École des Arts Décoratifs. In the meantime he began to exhibit his works. He returned to Istanbul and travelled in the Levant, painting prolifically (1908-1910). In 1913 he went to Thessaloniki where he remained until 1917, when he moved to Athens. In 1918, he was appointed director of the Museum of Popular Handicrafts and was also appointed member of the Art Council of the National Art Gallery. In the period 1921-1923 he lived and worked in the islands of Chios and Lesvos, and in 1923 he was honored with the Aristeion for Letters and the Arts. Maleas was a founding member of the “Art Group”, participating in its exhibitions, while he also showed his works in other group exhibitions and thirteen solo exhibitions. In 1936 a number of his works were sent to the Venice Biennale. Retrospective exhibitions of his works were held in 1929 at the Zappeion Exhibition Hall in Athens and in 1980 at the National Art Gallery. Apart from his artistic output, Maleas was also involved in educational reforms, working alongside Dimitris Glinos, Alexander Delmouzos, and Manolis Triantafyllidis. Influenced by Impressionist and post-Impressionist artistic trends, Maleas was a revitalizing force in the contemporary Greek art scene, focusing primarily on landscape painting, where his schematic patterns and intense, pure colors served to build, section by section, his compositions.
