this moving, whirlwind motorbike adventure.

Comfortably astride our bikes, the twin cylinders of their pushrod

engines emitting their characteristic, powerful purr so reminiscent

of the great, modern ‘On the Road’ (2) machines, a constant throb

that soon accelerates, and with a rush carries us away in ‘Beautiful

TRANSAMAZONIENNE

Notre aventure à moto commence

à Rio de Janeiro au Brésil.

Baroque, historique et moderne,

c’est une terre de contrastes

et de métissages entre mer d’un

bleu saisissant, presque violet

et forêts tropicales au charme

envoûtant…

Fraîchement débarquées à l’aéroport

international Galeao de Rio,

on décide de se laisser porter

pendant quelques jours aux

rythmes de la samba en sirotant

notamment des Caipirinha au

Secreto, l’un des bars branchés

de Rio.

Après avoir enfin récupéré nos

motos, nous sillonnons les rues

et ruelles de cette « citade

maravilhosa » jusqu’aux contreforts

du Pain de Sucre (Pao de Açúcar).

Et pour cause, le célèbre

Corcovado et son Christ

Rédempteur (aux bras protecteurs)

veillent sur les Cariocas…

Avant de prendre la route

vers le Nord, cap au Sud, pour

emprunter sur quelques

kilomètres « les chemins de

l’or », ceux des Conquistadors,

jusqu’à Paraty. Tout ici

rappelle qu’au Brésil, nature et

histoire se mélangent toujours…

À la fin de la semaine, sans

avoir pu trouver le vieux

village d’Arraial d’Ajuda, nous

arrivons au Sud de l’état de

Bahia, à la Casa do Dean, une

villa perdue entre falaises

mythiques, forêt magique et

océan aux eaux bleu-vert.

Stylée, funky, électrique, la

Casa do Dean mixe les genres

à l’image des photos de Dean

Freeman qui se mêlent à l’art

local. L’ambiance de ce loft géant

y est bohème chic, tropicale et

douce comme du lait de coco !

C’est ainsi que sont les Brésiliens.

Avant de se remettre en route

pour un très long et fatigant

trajet en direction de l’Équateur

et de sa capitale Quito via

Salvador, Cabedelo, la mythique

Transamazonienne BR 230 et

Boa Vista, nous profitons de la

plage très mode et branchée de

Trancoso pour un ultime moment

de détente et de bonheur estival

versant Atlantique.

À la fin de la semaine, sans

Our biker adventure begins in

Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

Steeped in history and both

modern and baroque in style,

this is a place of fusion and

contrasts, where the dazzling

indigo sea meets the heady

charms of the tropical forests…

Fresh off the plane at Galeao

International Airport in Rio,

we decide to spend a few days

living to the beat of the samba

that floats on the air, sipping

Caipirinhas at one of Rio’s

trendiest bars, the Secreto.

Back astride our bikes, we weave

our way in and out of the small

narrow streets of the Marvellous

City until we finally reach the

foot of the Sugarloaf Moun-

tain (Pao de Açúcar). Looking

up, we bask in the enormity

of the renowned Corcovado and

its Christ Redeemer, protective

arms spread as it watches over

the Cariocas.

Before taking the road leading

north, we head south to enjoy

a few miles of the ‘roads of

gold’, highways once taken by

the Conquistadors, up to Paraty.

Here, we are reminded that in

Brazil nature and history go

hand-in-hand.

At the end of the week, we still

haven’t stumbled upon the old

village of Arraial d’Ajuda.

We arrive in the south of the state

of Bahia, at the Casa do Dean,

a villa nestled in the middle

of nowhere between imposing

cliffs, enchanted forestland and

turquoise ocean. Stylish, funky,

brimming with electric energy,

the Casa do Dean mixes styles

and genres, with photography

by Dean Freeman rubbing

shoulders with local artwork.

The vibe in this giant loft is

boho-chic, tropical and as smooth

as coconut milk, the embodiment

of Brazilians themselves.

We need to set off once again

for a long and tiring stretch

towards Equator and its capital

Quito via Salvador, Cabedelo,

along the legendary BR 230

Trans-Amazonian and Boa Vista.

But first, we indulge in a trip

to the achingly hip and trendy

Trancoso beach for a moment of

pure relaxation and summery

optimism, stretching out towards

the Atlantic.

PANAMÉRICAINE

Après avoir traversé la verte,

dense et intense Amazonie en

direction de Quito puis longé,

plusieurs jours durant, le bleu

du Pacifique vers le Nord en

empruntant la Panaméricaine

(route qui relie du Sud au Nord

le continent américain) via

Panama, San Salvador, Mexico,

Monterrey et San Antonio, nous

voilà désormais arrivées en

Arizona, lieu d’éternité.

Un monde naturel bordé à

l’Ouest par la Californie,

au Nord par l’Utah et à

l’Est par le Nouveau Mexique :

autant dire un continent !

Au pays des indiens Hopis, celle

de la région des Four Corners,

le soleil est si chaud, la

température si torride, que l’on

décide de s’arrêter sur la fameuse

et mythique Route 66, afin de

se rafraîchir d’une Budweiser…

En plein désert de Mojave, au bar

du Bagdad Cafe (4) de Newberry

Springs, j’ai demandé d’où venait

le mot Arizona : on m’a répondu

« du mot indien Arizonac »

qui signifie petite source, une

source que l’on peut trouver non

loin de là, à Camelback ! Voilà

donc notre prochaine étape toute

trouvée: la Camelback Mountain,

sur les hauteurs de Phoenix.

« Sur la route » (5), malgré la

poussière et le soleil brûlant,

les paysages somptueux qui

comblent notre regard nous

rappellent les tableaux de David

Hockney. C’est simple ici, tout

époustoufle : les cactus Saguaro

en candélabres - aussi design

que les mobiles d’Alexander

Calder -, les canyons aux

couleurs extraordinaires, les

plaines immenses grillées par le

soleil. L’Arizona, c’est le genre de

lieu que l’on admire bouche-bée,

abasourdi.

Nous voilà désormais arrivées

aux casitas de Camelback,

dessinées par Franck Lloyd

Wright, célèbre architecte des

années 50. Avec leurs lignes

pures, propres, géométriques,

elles semblent flotter dans

ce paysage sauvage. « Arizona

Dream » ... (6)

Pour quelques jours encore, nous

voici dans une vie à l’écart de

tout.

S’offre à nous une plongée totale

dans la nature où les teintes

naturelles et si subtiles des

ocres, des rouges et des verts

émeraude amènent à méditer,

à réfléchir… On comprend mieux

soudainement pourquoi le peintre

et sculpteur Max Ernst a choisi

de vivre ici.

PAN-AMERICAN

ARIZONAAfter having crossed the green,

dense and intense Amazonian

Forest towards Quito, we spent

several days following the coast

and drinking in the blue of the

Pacific Ocean as we travelled

north on the Pan-American

(a highway that links the south

to the north of the American

continent), passing Panama, San

Salvador, Mexico, Monterrey

and San Antonio. We finally

reached our current destination,

Arizona, where time stands still.

This natural haven is bordered

by California to the West, Utah

to the North, and New Mexico to

the East – almost like its very

own continent!

In the land of the Hopis and the

Four Corners region, the sun is

relentless, the temperatures so

balmy and drowse-inducing that

we decide to stop off at the

famous and legendary Route 66 for

a thirst-quenching Budweiser.

Deep in the Mojave Desert at the

Bagdad Cafe bar (4) in Newberry

Springs, I asked the locals where

the word Arizona comes from,

and was told “from the Indian

word Arizonac”, which means a

little spring. The spring in

question isn’t too far away, in

Camelback. Our next pit-stop

has been decided: we’re heading

for Camelback Mountain, high in

the Phoenix peaks.

‘On the Road’ (5), despite the rising dust and the burning sun,

the beautiful landscapes roll by, reminding us of David Hockney

paintings. Every passing vista is breath-taking, from the

candelabra-shaped Saguaro cacti, as visually interesting as

Alexander Calder mobile designs, to the magnificently coloured

canyons and sun-scorched plains. Arizona is a place to be admired

in silence, breath catching, mouth agape.

We eventually arrive at the Camelback casitas, designed by Frank

Lloyd Wright, the famous 1950s architect. With their pure, sleek,

clean lines, they seem to float like ghosts in this wild, untamed

landscape. ‘Arizona Dream’... (6)

We have a few more days in which to enjoy this simple, quiet life

far from the rest of civilization.

We immerse ourselves in a natural environment where subtle,

natural tones of ochre, red, and emerald green lead us into a

kind of trance, prompting us to meditate, to reflect. We suddenly

understand why the painter and sculptor Max Ernst chose to make

LA ROUTE 66

Des milliers de kilomètres plus

loin, des tonnes de poussière

en plus, après une incroyable

poursuite de notre « chevauchée

fantastique » sur la « Sixty Six

», d’Ouest en Est des Etats-Unis

via Albuquerque, Santa Fe et

Oklahoma City, nous voilà à

nouveau « face à la mer » (7),

Face à l’Atlantique, à l’extrême

Sud de la Floride, au « Sunshine

State »...

C’est en effet à Miami, que nous

ferons halte. En fin de soirée,

au son rauque de nos puissantes

et endurantes machines, nous

faisons une entrée remarquée dans

« la ville mirage ». Sensuelle,

charmeuse, telle est cette

attirante sirène américaine…

Miami, c’est tout ce que les

autres villes n’ont pas : les

nuances pastel, les palmiers

sous la brise, les façades Art

déco, une lumière fantastique et

toutes ces petites choses qui ne

se déchirent pas…

Des « Pink Cadillac » (8), des

enseignes multicolores, des néons

kitch, des piscines aux formes

plus qu’improbables et des

cocktails incroyables.

C’est d’ailleurs dans le quartier

de Coconut Grove, au bar branché

d’Ocean Drive, que nous dégustons

notre « Flamingo », boisson à

base d’orange et de grenadine,

un flamant rose en plastique

accroché au verre… C’est le

paradis… ! Confortablement

assises en terrasse, on regarde

passer les gens chics, branchés,

fun, sophistiqués, artistes et de

toutes cultures.

Cette ville si exotique, si

vibrante et pleine d’énergie,

totalement latino-américaine est

unique.

Miami est aussi la ville où

s’achèvent nos « Echappées

belles ».

Clap de fin, « On achève bien

les chevaux » (9), et pour

cause, à l’heure de remiser nos

montures à larges guidon et

selles de cuir dans un container

à destination du « vieux continent

» et de Paris, « je pense à

la Casa Do Dean, je pense même

au vieux Arraial d’Ajuda, le

village de pêcheurs que nous

n’avons jamais trouvé, je pense

à la Casa Do Dean, je pense à la

Casa Do Dean… » (10)

ROUTE 66

Thousands of kilometres later,

coated in a few extra layers

of dust after a ‘Stagecoach’-

style bike chase down the Route

66 stretching from the West to

the East of the United States

via Albuquerque, Santa Fe and

Oklahoma City, we’re back again

‘at the seaside’ (7), face to face

with the Atlantic, on Florida’s

most southern tip deep in the

heart of the ‘Sunshine State’.

We will be stopping off in Miami.

As the night draws to a close,

in a whirlwind of roars coming

from our powerful, tireless

machines, we enter the ‘Magic

City’ with style and flair. The

city is sensual, enchanting,

overlooking the sea like an

American siren.

Miami is everything other cities

aren’t, boasting pastel shades

and palm trees that gently sway

in the breeze, Art Deco facades

and fantastic light, little

things that make the whole.

‘Pink Cadillacs’ (8), multi-

coloured signs and kitsch neon,

quirkily-shaped swimming pools

and mind-blowing cocktails.

In the Coconut Grove quarter at

the trendy Ocean Drive bar, we

sample the ‘Flamingo’, a drink

made with orange juice and

grenadine, a plastic flamingo

perched on the glass. We’re in

paradise, reclining on the

terrace, people-watching as the

trendy, the elegant, the fun,

artists and people from all

over the world slink by.

Such an exotic, vibrant, energetic

city, with an unmistakeable

Latino vibe. Unique Miami is

where our ‘Into the Wild’ trip

ends.

For our final shot, no need to

‘shoot horses’ (9), as we unsaddle

our trusty steads and coax

them into a shipping container

heading straight to the ‘old

world’ and on to Paris. As I

watch it depart, ‘I think of Casa

Do Dean, I even think of the old

Arraial d’Ajuda, the fishing

village we never found, I think

of Casa Do Dean, I think of Casa
