Why language sensitive teaching?

• Developments in the last 10 years have shown that more and more students have difficulties mastering basic educational competences

• 28% of Austrian students aged 15/16 cannot grasp the meaning of a text (PISA 2009)

• Vulnerable groups can be found across different language groups and different societal layers

• Language sensitive teaching is one remedy measure to reduce drop-out rates

Concept on comprehensive language support

• Basic principles: equal opportunities for all, social inclusion

• Main goal: provide tailor-made support for different needs:

– German as 2nd language,

– German „Bildungssprache“,

– support in the mother tongue (to create multilingualism),

– enhance „literacy“

• Pillars:

– language-sensitive input in all subjects (teaching),

– language support as early as possible,

– focus on individualised (regional) support models,

– create learner-friendly environments (parents, kindergarten, school)

• The Ministry has primarily focused on LangED-support (German), the future challenge will be to provide an integrative, holistic model which

caters for all individual language needs.

• Le Centre autrichien de compétence en langues modernes voit son rôle dans la promotion des échanges mutuels entre:

• Le Ministère de l‘Education Nationale

• Les „Instituts pour la formation des enseignants“ (en F: IUFM)

dans le but de former un réseau favorable à la mise en pratique des concepts théoriques

• Moins d‘obstacles linguistiques pour les élèves dans les disciplines dites non linguistiques

• Conscience des enseignants de l‘importance d‘une bonne maîtrise de la langue d‘enseignement dans l‘apprentissage de toutes les matières et mise en pratique des mesures didactiques appropriées
