Selon un vieil adage, « la forme, c’est le fond qui remonte àla surface ». Les associés du bureau d’architecture CCHEArchitecture & Design et Axel Jaccard, responsable du dépar-tement design, s’en inspirent pour offrir des services et des pro-duits qui, loin de se contenter d’un seul embellissement,s’insèrent dans une approche globale de la pensée architecturale.

C’est en 1995 qu’a été créée la section architecture d’intérieur,sous la direction de Marc Fischer, associé. En 2008, CCHE a étéconduit à construire le siège de nouvelles sociétés internationalesqui, outre les qualités architecturales, demandaient des proposi-tions de « branding » et de signalétique. Le besoin crée l’organe :c’est à cette même période qu’Axel Jaccard, designer industrielformé à l’ECAL, est engagé par CCHE et développe le secteur dudesign en multipliant les interventions à plusieurs échelles,secondé actuellement par un graphiste et deux designers.

L’équipe s’est d’abord attelée à répondre aux besoins propres ducentre de compétences architecturales. En s’intégrant de plus enplus précocement dans l’étude des projets architecturaux, lesdesigners ont pu apporter une vision complémentaire qu’aucunde leurs collègues externes n’aurait pu fournir. Leur expérience et leur créativité les ont amenés à produire desplaquettes, des signalétiques, des objets de toute nature (sièges,poignées, logos, carafes, tasses, sacs, ouvre-lettres, etc.). Maisl’équipe dont la notoriété s’élargissait a également été appelée àla rescousse par des bureaux d’architectes concurrents. L’expé-rience du casino de Neuchâtel est illustrative.

According to an old adage: “form is the substance which risesto the surface”. Partners at the firm of CCHE Architecture &Design and Axel Jaccard, head of the Design Department,have drawn on this adage to offer services and productswhich not merely provide embellishments but which fit intoan overall approach to architecture.

The interior design department was set up in 1995 under the direction of partner Marc Fischer. In 2008, CCHE was commis-sioned to build the headquarters of new international companieswhich required no only quality architecture but "branding" and signage. At this same time, Axel Jaccard, an industrial designertrained at ECAL, was hired by CCHE to develop the firm’s designand architecture business. He is currently assisted by a graphicartist and two designers.

The team first sought to meet the needs of the ArchitecturalCentre of Excellence. By becoming more involved upstream inarchitectural projects, the designers were able to offer a visionand further insights that none of their external colleagues couldprovide.Their experience and creativity led to the production of wafers,signage and various objects (seats, handles, logos, jugs, cups,bags and letter openers). But the team, whose reputation grew,was also approached to assist competing architectural offices.The casino at Neuchâtel is one such example.

Feu d’artifice permanentLe projet de réfection du casino de Neuchâtel éclaire la démarchedes designers de CCHE. L’architecte en charge du projet, LaurentGeninasca, fait appel à l’architecture d’intérieur de CCHE pourdévelopper avec lui les transformations du casino.La solution se focalise sur la création d’un lustre. Les besoins spé-cifiques en éclairage d’un tel lieu sont très divers, voire opposés.Ils vont de l’éclairage a giorno pour la maintenance et lesnettoyages à un niveau tamisé, presque irréel, propre à créer lamagie du jeu. Sans oublier les éclairages nécessaires pour assu-rer la sécurité des lieux par une surveillance vidéo qui éloignetoute tentation illicite. Très rapidement, CCHE a été tenté d’apporter une réponseunique à des besoins divers. Pour cela, il fallait imaginer unmodèle qui diffuse un éclairage changeant, orienté dans desdirections opposées, qui soit modulable pour passer de l’intimitécomplice aux feux de la rampe.

Cerise sur le gâteau – et pour répondre à la philosophie de CCHE– l’objet ne devait pas être un élément de décoration rajouté àl’intérieur du casino mais un élément structurant qui définisse lenouvel intérieur.

Une signatureDe haute lutte au vu des difficultés et des exigences de lasécurité, le projet a atteint, voire dépassé son but, en proposantl’installation de près de deux cents luminaires. L’effet de masse– pari osé parce que difficile à vérifier au préalable – fait tout soneffet permettant tous les scénarios, d’un éclairage intime au feude lumière quand les tubes explosent de puissance. Habillantcomplètement le plafond de la salle de jeux, du restaurant et dubar, l’installation définit une nouvelle architecture d’intérieur pourles locaux ainsi éclairés et prend l’ascendant en devenant lasignature du casino.Répondant à trois ambiances, feutrée au bar, conviviale aurestaurant, chaleureuse dans la salle de jeux, les luminairesrépondent parfaitement aux fonctions qui leur ont été attribuées,plus quelques autres telle l’intégration des caméras de surveil-lance propres à un tel lieu. Pari d’autant mieux réussi que le luminaire qui a fait ses preuvesà Neuchâtel a séduit au point de passer en production parl’entreprise qui en a assuré la production selon les plans desdesigners de CCHE. Le grand éclairagiste suisse Regent Lightingva le mettre à son catalogue probablement dès l’automne 2013 :la fonction a bien généré la forme.

Lights that sparkle and glitterThe rehabilitation of the Neuchâtel Casino illustrates the theapproach of designers at CCHE. The architect in charge of theproject, Laurent Geninasca, contacted the interior architecturedepartment of CCHE to assist it in refurbishing the casino.

The solution was to design a chandelier. The specific demandsfor lighting Lighting in this type of location are both diverse andsometimes contradictory. They include a giorno lighting for

maintenance and cleaning purposes in a subdued, almost unreal,light, which creates a magical atmosphere, as well as lighting toensure security via CCTV cameras.

Very quickly, CCHE was prompted to offer a single reply to meetthese different needs. A system of changing light in opposing directions, alternating between intimate and bright lighting.

In keeping with CCHE’s philosophy, the aim was not to add another feature to the interior decoration of the casino but to define a new interior.

A signatureThe project team successfully overcame the security problemsand requirements by proposing some two hundred lights. Theoverall effect has been to produce both intimate lighting to brightand powerful spot lights. The installation fully covers the ceilingin the games room, restaurant and bar. It provides a new designfor the interior lighting and defines the identity (signature) of thecasino.The lighting is tailored to three environments: muffled in the bar,user-friendly in the restaurant and warm in the games room. Thelights fully meet their purpose and are compatible with the CCTVcameras specific to this type of building.The lighting system installed in Neuchâtel proved so successfulthat it entered the production line based on plans drawn up bythe CCHE design team. The major Swiss lighting specialistRegent will list the offering in its product catalogue, probablyfrom this autumn.

Les jeux sont faitsDe la création à la production de série. Créé spécifiquementpar le département design du bureau CCHE pour le casino de Neuchâtel,le luminaire a si bien rempli les fonctions qu’on attendait de lui que, trèsvite, s’est posée la question d’une disponibilité plus large. Des études sontdonc en cours pour une mise en catalogue par l’entreprise Regent Lightingqui a assuré la production des modèles installés à Neuchâtel. Mais les jeuxsont faits et le pari semble gagné.

L’offre publique comportera des luminaires fixés au plafond, des suspen-sions et des appliques. Quelques adaptations seront indispensables pourun usage grand public. Pour les alléger, les tubes seront en aluminium, pro-posés avec un choix de couleurs. Le système de fixation et la connexionélectrique seront également revus pour en faciliter la pose.

Outre la question du poids, le graphisme des perforations sera égalementrepris avec l’accord des concepteurs. L’original – produit à quelque deuxcents exemplaires – était complexe à produire. L’appareil qui sera proposéau catalogue, pour rester dans une gamme de prix acceptable, devrait pou-voir être produit à un coût mieux maîtrisé et selon des procédures de pro-duction optimisées.

De l’idée de base – où quelques designers se demandaient, un bout detissu dans la main, comment obtenir une diffusion de la lumière propre àanimer la salle de jeux d’un casino – à la mise au catalogue de Regent Ligh-ting d’un nouveau modèle, la route a été longue. Pleine de doutes aussidevant les demandes spécifiques et les obstacles. Mais le résultat seravraisemblablement disponible dès cet automne pour ceux qui voudrontaussi « leur feu d’artifice ». �

Building on successFrom the design stage to mass production. Speciallydeveloped by CCHE’s Design Department for the Neuchâtel Casino,the lights provided proved so successful that the designers consideredproducing them on a larger scale. Studies are thus under way for a cata-loguing by the Regent Lighting Company, which produced the lights in-stalled at Neuchâtel, plans to enter them in its new catalogue. The gambleseems to have paid off.

The company’s offering will include ceiling-fitted lights, suspension armsand brackets. A few adjustments will be required to meet the needs forthe general public. To make the tubes lighter, they will be made of alu-minium in a range of colours. The fixtures and electrical connections willalso be reviewed for facilitate assembly.

Besides the weight issue, the graphic design of the perforations will alsobe reviewed with the approval of the designers. The original design, ofwhich some 200 items have been manufactured, were complicated toproduce. The company plans to list the light fixture at an acceptable pricetag and to optimize its production .

It has been a long road from the initial concept stage during which somedesigners wondered who light could be diffused in the games room of acasino, – to the list of the new poffering in Regent Lighting’s catalogue.There was also considerable doubt about the ability to meet the specificrequirements and overcome various obstacles. However, the new modelwill probably be available from this autumn for clients who want to wanttheir buildings to shine and sparkle. �

L’élément de base se compose d’un tube de dix centimètre de diamètre. Il est équipé enpied de deux sources lumineuses led (diode électroluminescente) montées en opposition.Entre les deux, un système facilite l’évacuation de la chaleur. Chacune des sources estasservie à un variateur. En poussant le led orienté vers le bas, on accroît la luminosité directe.En poussant celui orienté vers le haut, on « allume le feu », puisque toutes les découpesdans le métal s’illuminent, entraînant des reflets scintillants dans l’épaisseur du tube et desrosaces aux formes oniriques au plafond.

The main section comprises a tube 10 cm in diameter. Each end is fitted with two LEDlight sources (light emitting diodes) mounted opposite one another. Between them a sys-tem to facilitate heat removal has been added. Each energy source is controlled by a vari-ator. By pushing the LED downwards, direct brightness is increased. By pushing the LEDupwards, "lighting is at maximum brightness ", since all the insertions in the metal light up,producing twinkling reflections in the thickness of the tube and rosettes with dream-likeshapes appearing on the ceiling.

Mobilier M2B, Les stations du nouveau métro presque terminées, l’entreprisedes Transports publics lausannois lance un concours, dans des délais très brefs, pour« meubler » les nouvelles gares. Face aux grands fournisseurs internationaux, CCHEemporte le concours avec une proposition d’une très grande simplicité mais qui ré-pond avec élégance aux déclivités qui caractérisent pratiquement toutes les stations.

Une barre doublement coudée peut être posée horizontalement ou verticalement.Les quatre sièges ou les appuis ischiatiques (plus grossièrement dit, repose-fesses)se posent individuellement par un mécanisme orientable qui assure leur horizontalité.Produit en Suisse avec de l’acacia, le siège est particulièrement confortable grâce àl’élasticité du dossier.

Discret, pérenne, facile à entretenir ou à réparer, le mobilier M2B répond au besoin(fonction) dans un aspect discret (forme) qui correspond à un endroit de grand passage pour voyageurs parfois stressés.

M2B fittings and fixtures,With the new metro stations almost completed,the Lausanne Public Transport Authority has invited suppliers to quickly submit bidsto "furnish" its new stations. Although facing major international suppliers, CCHEwas selected in preference to leading international suppliers based its very simpleand elegant proposal for the inclines at almost every station.

A double-elbow bar may be assembled horizontally or vertically. The four seats orhip rests (more commonly called “bottom rests”) are individually fitted via a pivot-ingmechanism which ensures their horizontality. Manufactured in Switzerland withacacia wood, the seats are particularly comfortable thanks to their flexible back rests.

M2B fittings and fixtures are low-profile, long-lasting, easy to clean or to repair andae suited to busy mass transit locations where passengers are sometimes stressed.

Impact, Pour Swissbau 2012, à Bâle, l’entreprise Beschläge USW SA organiseun concours offrant au public la possibilité de choisir une nouvelle gamme depoignées de porte. Sur cent huitante propositions, USW en retient quinze qu’ellesoumet au choix des visiteurs. Et le vainqueur est… CCHE avec une solution inté-grant la butée de porte à la poignée, sous la forme d’un embout de silicone. Lignessobres, proportions confortables, la gamme se décline pour portes, fenêtres,boutons fixes ou autres. Et fait désormais partie du catalogue du fournisseur USW.

Impact, At the Swissbau 2012 show in Basel, the Beschläge USW organized acompetition for the design of a new range of door handles. Out of 108 proposalssubmitted, USW selected 15 and asked visitor to choose the winner. The winnerwas CCHE who offered a solution that included a door stop integrated into the doorhandle in the form of a silicon end cap. This offering with its sober shapes and user-friendly dimensions has been developed for doors, windows, fixed switches andother devices and is now list in USW’s catalogue.
