    Concepts related to stress

    Stressors:- The physical or psychologicaldemands from the environment that causes

    stress .

    Eustress:-

    A term used to describe positivestress. occurs when your level of stress is high

    enough to motivate you to move into action to

    get things accomplished.

    Distress:- when your level of stress is either

    too high or too low and your body and/or mind

    begin to respond negatively to the stressors.

    Need not always be damaging

    Occurs not always due to

    Sources of Stress

    Individual level

    Most common stressors are personality, role ambiguity,

    role overload, role conflict

    Personality : Two types of personality :Type A Type B

    Walks & eats rapidly

    Feel impatient with the pace of

    things, dislikes waiting

    Does several thingssimultaneously

    Feel guilty while relaxing

    Try to schedule more & more in

    less time

    Presence of nervous gestures

    Does not have time to enjoy life.

    Least concerned about time

    Comparatively patient

    Play to fun not to win

    Relaxes without feeling guilty Has no pressing deadlines

    Is mild-mannered

    Never in a hurry

    Sources of Stress

    Role ambiguity :- Uncertainty about employees

    responsibilities,functions,levels of authority & performance

    standards .Mostly happens with the new joiners.

    Role Overload :- Too much of work causes mental stress to anemployee .

    Role Conflict :- it arises when people face competing demands.

    i. Inter-role ConflictEmployees have two conflicting rolesshared by matrix bosses.

    ii. Personal Conflict - When personal values clash with

    Organizational goals

    Group Level

    Group level stressors are caused by group dynamics &

    managerial behaviour.

    Exhibiting inconsistent behaviour

    Failing to provide support

    Showing lack of concern

    Providing inadequate direction

    Focusing on negative performanceIgnoring positive performance

    Organizational Level

    Organizational climate is basically responsible for

    generation of Organizational Stressors.

    Poor Lightning, Loud Noise, improper placement of

    furniture etc could also lead top stress.

    i. Organizational Structure :-

    Level of Differentiation

    Degree of rules & regulations in decision making

    Lack of participation

    Excessive rules

    ii. Organizational Leadership :

    Represents the Managerial style of the Organizations

    senior executives.

    Creation of a culture by the officers featured as tension,fear & anxiety .

    Establishment of unrealistic expectations

    Tight Control on the workings of the employees.

    iii. Organizational Life-Cycle :

    Eight phases of Org. Life-cycle :-Birth,growth,policy,procedure,theory,religion,ritual& last rites.

    Each phase has its own challenges, early being exiting & latter

    being full of anxiety & tension.

    Employee Assistance

    Programmes (EAPs)

    EAPs are designed to deal with a wide range of stress-relatedproblems both work related & non-work related problems.

    It is followed by the following steps :-

    i. Diagnosis : Employees ask for help & EAP staff attempt todiagnose the problem

    ii. Treatment : Counseling or supportive therapy is provided.

    iii. Screening : Periodic examination of employees in highly

    stressful jobs is provided to detect early indicators of

    problems.

    iv. Prevention : Education & persuasion techniques are used

    to convince employees.
