� Single-step conversion to a HALDB in real time

� DBDLIB conversion - creates the JCL to convert entire database description (DBD) libraries

� Offline Reorganization of PSINDEX databases - used offline & includes index pointer healing

� Easier Maintenance

� Merge partitions that are too small – Divide partitions that are too big

� Merge HALDBs - merge identical HALDB databases and used to combine user-partitioned databases into one multipartition HALDB.

� Delete Partition - removes the PSINDEX records of the deleted partition.

Job is control card driven to indicate which features are performed

� IMS Tools Knowledge Base Server (ITKBSRVR)

ITKB is required!

An ITKB server must be active in order for any IMS RE job to execute

� IMS Control Region (IMS CR)

IMS RE has a presence in the IMS CR for pausing CICS/ODBA threads and is established via the IMS Partner Exit (DFSPPUE0)

IMS RE also uses TOSI which also establishes a presence using DFSPPUE0

� Batch Message Processing Region (BMP)

IMS RE requires a presence in any BMPs for pausing them at checkpoint time when the Recovery Point Create (RPCR) feature is executing

IMS Recovery Expert Supporting Features � Recovery Point Creation (RPCR)

� Provide the ability to create recovery points for one or more databases

� The customer will have the option of having databases /DBR’d or /DBD’d

� Databases will be restarted only on those systems which they were started before the process

� Optionally provide a synchronized log switch across all IMS systems in the environment

� Feature uses the IMS Tools Online System Interface which provides synchronous /DBR and /DBD commands

� Provides IMS region controller (DFSRRC00) front-end for pausing BMPs at checkpoint. Also works with Program Restart Facility (PRF) for pausing BMPs at checkpoint, if present

� Provides CICS/ODBA intercept which will ‘pause’ APSB (allocate PSB) requests when needed

� Recovery Point Identification (RPID)

� Interrogate information in the RECON to identify recovery points and/or recovery time spans to which one or more databases can be recovered

� Identifies recovery time spans individually and common to all databases specified

� Future enhancement: Will optionally read archived logs (SLDS) to identify points in which the database is allocated but no updates are being performed

� Identification and Verification of Recovery Assets (VERIFY)

� Interrogate information in the RECON to identify the assets (logs, change accums, image copies, etc…) which are required to recover one or more databases

� Once identified, processing options allow for:

Listing of recovery assets (default, always done)

Verification that the recovery asset is cataloged

Allocation and opening of the file to ensure data set is usable

� RECON Data Set Cleanup (RCU)

� Required for disaster recovery environment

� At the disaster recovery site, the RECON data sets must be conditioned to match the recovery environment

� Interrogate IMS database information looking for potential problems relating to the recoverability of the environment

� Utilize information from the RECON data sets and the catalog

� Currently includes a list of over 20 items that can be checked

� More items will be added based on customer requirements

� Future enhancement will save error conditions in the repository and autonomic processes will take action to correct the problems identified

� IMS Command Interface (IMSCMD)

� Utilizes the IMS Tools Online System Interface to provide a batch IMS Command interface

� Allows any type-1 IMS command supported through an AO application

� Output from commands displayed in the report file

� Provides three levels of security:

� RECON Copy (RECONCOPY)

� This feature creates a copy of the live RECON data sets prior to the IMS RE feature executing

� The IMS RE feature will access the RECON copy data sets instead of the live RECON data sets

� This feature eliminates the impact of IMS RE processing on production workloads

� RECONCOPY is valid for all features except for RPCR and IMSCMD

� RECONCOPY is required for RCU

� RECON copies can be deleted at job step termination or left allocated and cataloged

� Database List (DBLIST)

� Most IMS RE features require the customer to specify which databases, database data sets, areas and/or partitions are to be processed

� DBLIST allows the customer to specify one or more databases, database data sets, fast path areas, HALDB partitions, RECON DBDS groups, RECON Change Accumulation groups, or RECON Recovery groups

� IMS RE pre-processes the list by using the DBRC Application Programming Interface (DSPAPI) to access information in the RECON data sets

� DBLIST entries are validated, expanded and passed to other IMS RE features

� All entries in the DBLIST must be defined to the RECON data sets
