Regular -ER verbs share conjugation patterns in all tenses and moods.

-ayer verbsIn the present tense, -ayer verbs have an optional stem change: y changes to i in all forms but nous and vous.

   je  paie       nous  payons   tu  paies     vous  payez   il  paie        ils  paient

For the present tense of verbs that end in -eler, the stem change consists of doubling the l in all forms but nous and vous.

   j'  appelle       nous  appelons   tu  appelles     vous  appelez   il  appelle        ils  appellent

Verb conjugation group   appeler - to call   épeler - to spell   rappeler - to call back, recall   renouveler - to renew

Exceptions: the verbs geler, harceler, and peler are conjugated like -e_er verbs.

For the present tense of verbs that end in -eter, the stem change consists of doubling the t in all forms but nous and vous.

   je  jette       nous  jetons   tu  jettes     vous  jetez   il  jette        ils  jettent

Exception: the verb acheter is conjugated like an -e_er verb.

For the present tense of verbs that end in -e_er, where _ indicates one or more consonants,* the stem change consists of changing the e before that consonant to è in all forms but nous and vous.

   je  lève       nous  levons   tu  lèves     vous  levez   il  lève        ils  lèvent

For the present tense of verbs that end in -é_er, the stem change consists of changing é to è in all forms but nous and vous.

   je  considère       nous  considérons   tu  considères     vous  considérez   il  considère        ils  considèrent

Ne…pas

To make a sentence or question negative, place ne in front of the conjugated verb and pas (or one of the other negative adverbs) after it. Ne... pas translates roughly as "not."

   Je suis riche - Je ne suis pas riche.   I'm rich - I'm not rich.

   Êtes-vous fatigué ? - N'êtes-vous pas fatigué ?   Are you tired? - Aren't you tired?

In compound verbs and dual-verb constructions, the negative adverbs surround the conjugated verb (except for nulle part [see page 2], which follows the main verb).

   Je n'ai pas étudié.   I didn't study.

   Nous n'aurions pas su.   We wouldn't have known.
