There are 13 lunar months each year. In Arabicastrology, the 28 mansions of the moon, describethe 28 days of the lunar cycle, so the moon travelsthrough a different mansion each day of themonth.

The mansions are all the same size: 12 degrees 51minutes and 26 seconds. Each quadrant sharesthe same cycle of seven mansions: Starts at 0 degrees on a Cardinal signs (Aries,

Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) using the tropical zodiac. Some of the arabic names matchparts of the corresponding zodiac constellation.

The word "Mansion" is derived from the Arabic word "manzil"

Mansions of the Moon Excellent comparison of Abenragel, Ibn ‘Arabi’s List of the Mansions, Dorotheus, Yeats, Kircher.

The Mansions are strongly linked to the stellar patterns in the night sky rather than to the Sun’s equinoxes and solstices (its tropoi, turningpoints), which form the basis for Arabian and European astrology, and

the Mansions therefore creep 'forwards' as the precession of theequinoxes shifts the tropical Zodiac backwards against the background of the stars. The exact amount of the drift varies with the date.

Ian Freer suggests that the author of the Picatrix wrote down notes whilelistening to sages who had memorized the information, which was standardpractice in ancient times. In particular the names and references to Mansionsof the Moon are garbled. He suggest looking at Vivian Robson's "Fixed Starsand Constellations" for more accurate information.

Chinese, Hindu and Arab astrology use Lunar Mansions.The Hindu system uses 27 mansions for everything but horary work.

The Chinese is very different.The other systems are set out in detail in Robson's book and also in

Volguine's "Lunar Astrology" Arab astrology is the closest obvious source for the Picatrix. The basis of this system was compiled in writing in Iran during the period of the 3rdto 7th centuries AD, but may well derive from earlier, more obscure oralor lost written sources.

Each mansion has special types of influences. When making a talisman, you would want to choose a time when the appropriate mansion or mansions are in good and

influential position, such as rising, on an angle and the moon or appropriate planetsin the mansion.
