identity (in the form of a unique serialnumber) of an object or personwirelessly using radio waves.

signal and in response to it sends out aradio signal.

Information sent to and read from RFID tags by a reader usingradio waves.

An RFID reader transmits an energy field that wakes up the tag

to respond to the reader. Data collected from tags is then passed through communication

interfaces(cable or wireless)to host computer systems in thesame manner that data scanned from bar code lable is capturedand passed to computer system for interpretation, storage andaction.

y Self Check-out station is basically a computer with a touchscreen and a built-in RFID reader, plus special software

y After identifying the patron with a library ID card, abarcode card, or his personal ID number (PIN), the patronis asked to choose the next action (check-out of one orseveral books).

y After choosing check-out , the patron puts the book(s) infront of the screen on the RFID reader and the display willshow the book title and its ID number (other optionalinformation can be shown if desired) which have beenchecked out.

y The patron then confirms that he has finished the check-out process and a receipt is printed, showing which bookshave been borrowed and the return date. The RFID tag inthe book is set on quiet as a result no alarm will go off atthe EAS gates.

y It is also possible to use the station for Check-In (return)of books. In this case the patron identifies herself, choosesreturn and then puts one book or a stack of books ontothe reader. She will receive a receipt. If the books were tobe taken through the gate now, an alarm would sound.

y One important point for library productivity is that thewhole process is significantly less time consuming thanwith barcode and magnetic strip system; therefore longlines are avoided and fewer stations are needed for thesame process.

y The Book Drops can be located anywhere, within

or outside the library. Possible remote locationsoutside the library include MR T/train stations,shopping centers, schools, etc.

y This offers unprecedented flexibility andconvenience of returning library items at anytimeof the day, even when the library is closed.

y Patron inserts the library item into the slot.y The reader captures the electronic signature and

sends to backend system for loan cancellation.y Patron is acknowledged by beeping sound and

flashlight. Patrons record is updated immediately.y This is possible due to the seamless link between

LibBest Library RFID Management System and thehost computer system.

y As such, users who have reached their loan quotacan start borrowing items once they have returnedthem through the Book Drop.

y The Shelf Management Solution makes locatingand identifying items on the shelves an easy task

for librarians. It comprises basically of a portablescanner and a base station.

y The solution is designed to cover three mainrequirements:

Search for individual books requested

Inventory check of the whole library stock

Search for books which are miss-helvedy All these functions are performed by sweeping

the portable scanner across the spines of thebooks on the shelves to gather their identities.

y In an inventory check situation, the identitiescollected are compared with the database and adiscrepancy report could be generated.

y In situations when search function is required,whether for a particular item or an item category,the information is first entered into the portablescanner from the base station, and when a foreignitem is found on the shelves, a built-in beepersound to alert the librarians.

y RFID is said by many in the industry to be thefrontrunner technology for automatic identificationand data collection.

y The biggest, as of yet unproven, benefit wouldultimately be in the consumer goods supply chainwhere an RFID tag attached to a consumer productcould be tracked from manufacturing to the retail

store right to the consumer's home.

technology due to higher cost accuracy, speed and thereturn on investment is high in RFID system.

y The retailers, manufacturers and consumer goodscompanies like CVS, Tesco, Prada, Benetton, Wal-Mart and

Procter & Gamble are now implementing the technology and exploring the impact of the technology on theirbusiness.

y Others can also take advantage of RFID.The basis of success lies in understanding the technology and otherfeatures to minimise the potential problems.

y It is high time that Indian apparel industry should startutilising the new technology such as RFID in variousapplications such as manufacturing, and storing purposes.
