Quels prix pour les données?

U.K.-based supermarket giant Tesco is aprime example of a nonfinancial companythat’s using data to compete effectivelywith traditional financial players. Until2008, the company ran Tesco Bank as a50/50 joint venture with the Royal Bank ofScotland. That year Tesco bought out RBSand began developing a completely newinfrastructure for the business, built a newteam, and brought in new expertise. Thetransition was not always smooth — forinstance, online customers were locked outof accounts for several days in 2011 whenTesco moved data from the RBS systems toits own — but it’s now complete. To fullyexploit this treasure trove of data, thecompany took a significant stake inDunnhumby, a U.K. data mining firm thatwill help Tesco monetize the consumer datafrom both the retail and bankingoperations. At its core, Tesco Bank isunderpinned by the Clubcard. The insightsthe bank gains from the Clubcard customerdata allow the company to understandcustomer needs and make the mostrelevant offers in the store and in thebank. The Clubcard credit card rewardscustomers with points whenever they usetheir card — one Clubcard point for every
£4 (US$6.12) spent. Clubcard customers canalso receive preferential deals when buyingTesco Bank products — including discountson car, home, pet, and travel insurance —and can use points to buy Tesco Bankinsurance. This year, Tesco Bank gavecustomers around £70 million (US$107million) worth of points to spend in thestore or on Clubcard rewards. In terms ofsystems and IT, Tesco’s new platformssignificantly improve customer service.Instant decisions are now possible on loanapplications, and customers can open andfund savings accounts in just 10 minutesrather than the two weeks required in thepast. The conversion is still in its early days, but Tesco’s efforts are paying dividends inthe form of increased market share across arange of products. In 2009, Tesco Bankcredit cards made up 9 percent of allMasterCard and Visa credit cardtransactions in the U.K., and by 2012 thatfigure had grown to 12 percent.Meanwhile, from 2008 to 2012, thecompany’s car insurance gross writtenpremiums increased by 39 percent and petinsurance gross written premiums rose 44percent.
