THE RHYTHM OF THE RAILS L’orgie musicale de mercredi soir nous
After Wednesday’s musical orgy left my senses in overload, I was very happy yesterday to climb aboard the New Orleans Jazz Train in the hopes of clearing my head—and eardrums. When I saw the little cog train at the Montreux station, with its pastel-colored bodywork and retro interior, I knew I was in for a revitalizing excursion. A veritable recipe for happiness: the swaying of a train and some great jazz!
The program called for two ensembles, two train cars, and two different atmospheres, but no cause for jealousy: the groups would switch for the trip back down. Very quickly, what could have turned into a typical tourist outing, complete with languages from all over the world punctuated by flashing digital cameras, instead proved to be
something far more inspiring. Even before the first quaint chalets came into view, admiring gasps of “Wow!” were ringing out as the ambiance heated up and the voyagers started rolling up their sleeves and clapping. The double bass didn’t completely fit into the train? The drummer had to kneel on his seat? The accordionist nearly blinded the guy next to him? So what? No one was complaining. The musicians in Tiefatch, a small Balkan Swing band, were veterans of the toughest conditions: “We’re a street band, we’ve seen worse!”
At the other end of the column, Lauriane was treating passengers to a soprano saxophone solo with peaks that mirrored those visible through the windows. For the entire hour of the trip up, the Crazy Stompers Jazz Band kept their audi-ence enthralled with a repertoire straight out of the bayou. When we arrived in Rochers-de-Naye, a treat awaited us, explained by Nicklaus, guide and initiator of the program: “You’re at an alti-tude of 2000 meters. You can have a walk in the alpine garden, featuring over 800 plants, or visit ‘Marmot Paradise,’ exhibiting several different species of that charming little mammal.” Our group quickly spread out, with the least athletic opting for a fondue dinner at the restaurant and a concert by the two train-borne bands.
Two hours later we were back on the train, which pulled out through the evening mist in a supernatural ambiance that wouldn’t have been out of place in a Wes Anderson film. Valérie and Rémy came all the way from Thonon, France, and it was worth the trip: “We got three things for the price of one: the music, the train trip, and the view.” It really was an enjoyable way to spend four hours: in addition to the mobile concert, we also saw Mongolian yurts, snow-covered peaks, chamois…and some of the most beautiful cows anywhere. The lady to my left whispered to me: “That’s some prime steak on the hoof over there…”

HIGHLIGHTS
Although they are one of the best live bands in South Africa, Lonehill Estate do not seem to be heavy-headed. The video available on Youtube where each member delivers a wacky explana-tion of the name of the band easily proves it.
Likewise, their live appearances are a real
show that can occasionally involve costumes and funky glasses.
Their punchy rock has also earned them the best rankings in the national charts, prizes at international competitions and fl attering rankings in magazines such as Cosmopolitan
Music in the Park | 06. 07.2012 · 23h30 - 11:3 0pm | 07.07.2012 · 16h - 4pm
Magazine. Their last album already has two hits and seems to continue in the same direction with «The Green Pocket», a single on the relationship between man and nature, remaining in the line of the political lyrics that characterize Lonehill Estate’s music.

InTERvIEW
Si tu écrivais ton autobiographie, quel titre lui donnerais-tu ?
Waouh.
Redding.
On
Je me soigne. Julie Hugo
Your lyrics are quite intellectual. When and how do you write?
Thanks—but I also talk about more practical things. I never force myself to write. I never say: “Today, I write.” I go with the fl ow. I get inspired, sometimes after refl ection, sometimes from a realization…it can be about big topics, or more minor issues.
If you were to write your autobiography, what would its title be?
Wow. That would be quite an achievement. I like long titles like “I do not fear men, they could believe they are equal to God.” That sounds good. It makes you want to read it, doesn’t it?
What song do you identify with the most?“A change is gonna come,” Otis Redding’s
version. It gives me purpose and hope. It’s always like that, nothing’s ever fi nished, completed. I like the idea of perpetual evolution, and that song puts me in a good mood
If you could master something new, what would it be?
There are many things, like playing instru-ments…. Now that I have musicians, I can get frustrated. I can whistle but I don’t know if that counts. I can also sort of play the triangle. I’d like
to know everything about Africa, about history. There’re a lot of things I’d like to be able to do.
Do you have any pre-concert rituals with your musicians?
I gather my crew for a prayer. I thank them for all they do. After that, I yell at them. We mock-fi ght each other and then we enter a sort of sentimental phase—we hug.
Do you like Switzerland?I’m not rich and I don’t like chocolate but I
love Switzerland. I need help!

Benjamin Keller
DUSTInG OFF THE ARCHIvES
What is the best way to showcase the trea-sure trove represented by 5000 hours of musical archives amassed by the Montreux Jazz Festival? An explanation was provided at two workshops Thursday, organized in the Petit Palais by the Fondation Montreux Jazz 2. The experts from the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the prestigious technical university en-trusted with this digitalization project, showed off the futuristic equipment they have designed just for this purpose.
Alexandre Delidais, Director of Operations and Development at the Metamedia Center of the EPFL and charged with this digitalization project, explained that upon completion of the digitalization of the archives in 2014, they will be able to be consulted by the public in a multimedia Montreux Jazz Café (complete with concert hall) to be built on the site of the EPFL. He described
a number of innovative technologies that will be available to visitors, among them the Montreux Jazz Lab. Designed by the EPFL+ECAL Lab, this is a miniature projection room that looks a lot like a spaceship. Its creators explained that in order to create total immersion, the projected image is actually slightly curved. An interactive table allows you to search the archives with a simple movement of your fingertip. At the mo-ment, the Montreux Jazz Lab is still located in the EPFL’s facilities in Renens, but it is expected to be available to music lovers in the near future.
FLASHBACK
Vendredi, 6 juillet 201210 Montreux Jazz Chronicle
3 QUESTIOnS
Helena Macadam
Could you explain to us what your job con-sists of ?
I’m in charge of coordinating the Festival staff all year round. I supervise 1300 volunteers and semi-volunteers appointed to 30 sectors like the information, accreditation, the VIP welcome service, the ticket booths, the wristbands, and the nursery… At the staff office, we coordinate all of these sectors. Registration starts in Janu-ary; we deal with all the applications and then recruit staff depending on the sectors. We contact the applicants and confirm their enrollment. Throughout the year, we are constantly in touch with the various sector managers in order to improve the distribution of the staff according to the sector’s needs. We are always having to make changes, replace someone who has had to leave…. About 40% of the staff comes back the following year. It’s my second time in this position and it’s much easier this year because I know what to expect.
What’s the importance of the staff for MJF?It’s thanks to each staff member’s work that
the Festival can take place. Everyone’s role is important no matter which sector they work in. Every department has their own part to play to ensure that the Festival is a success. The front-desk staff is very important for the festivalgo-ers, as is the cleaning staff. Each sector plays a defined role. Sometimes if staff members are not
suited to their role or make serious mistakes, we must let them go. There was a case with a bar staff member that could not count: this was somewhat of an issue for us. So far this year we haven’t had any serious cases or problems.
What do you think is the main advantage of your job?
The contact with people. Every day, people come to the staff office to ask us questions and if they have any problems, it’s us who they come to see. So I get to meet a lot of people and for me that is what I enjoy the most—contact with people and the organization side of the job, too.

One day at dawn, I received a call from the manager of the Excelsior hotel in Montreux. One of the artists of the Festival was causing a disturbance outside the hotel. It was Aretha Franklin who, amazed by the beauty of the Swiss landscape, was singing to the mountains and to the lake.
