Architectural Features

• Octagonal compartments Connected one another with diagonal passages

• largest in centre having cenotaph of the emperor – smaller one at each

angle for the members of his family

• Clerestory windows with perforated screens

• Persian influence – arched alcove, shape of the dome & arrangement of the

rooms in

• Emphasis through use of red sandstone with white marble

Architectural Features

• A Gateway on all four sides, the western being the main entrance with an

archway

• Garden in square and rectangular compartments with flowered guideways

and stone pavements

• The central building on 22’ high plinth. Arcaded sides, leading to a small

room for visitors

• Marble dome of 140’ high with a cluster of pillared kiosks with cupola roofs

(chatri) on each side

Architectural Features• Built during 1580-1581.

• Originally was built in red stone but later changed in white marbel.

• The tomb consist of a square exterior of 24ft side which contains a mortuary chamber of 16ft side, whole covered by a low dome.

Buland Darwaza - Interior• The structure may be resolved into 2 aspects, the forntal and highest aspect

forming the façade with the portal and the back view consisting of a lower and plainer portion intruding into the mosque courtyard.

• The most impressive feature of this complex is the throne chamber facing east. It is said that it was so built beacause of akbars’ belief in “sun worship”
