Principal’s message

Cyber Safety Information Evening It was an absolute delight to welcome so many

interested parents to our cybersafety information

evening last week. Police Youth Liaison Officer, Paul

Ebsworth, delivered a highly interesting, informative and

engaging session about the benefits and pitfalls of

modern day technology, especially around the areas of

social media. His no-nonsense presentation style was

extremely well-received and he was most generous with

his time, staying and answering a multitude of questions.

Paul was thrilled with the number of people who

attended, saying that it was the largest group in

attendance in all the years of working in his current role.

It is a testament of the concern that our community has

about this issue and it indicates the level of care and

dedication we all have for our young people.

One of the first tasks I performed when I got home that

night was to change many of my passwords which, as

Paul pointed out, were not really secure enough.

Thank you to both the primary and high school P&C

committees for organising the wonderful event and for

catering on the night. It was very much appreciated.

The Department of Education is currently reviewing the

use of mobile phones in schools. More information can

School Excellence Validation This week, I had the privilege of visiting a high school in

the Wollongong area and conducting their external

validation process. As I have mentioned previously, every

school participates in a validation process where they

compare themselves against the Schools Excellence

Framework. The framework consists of the three

domains of Teaching, Learning and Leadership with each

domain containing a number of Elements including:

Wellbeing, Assessment, Effective Classroom Practice,

Professional Standards, and School Resources.

Once in every five-year cycle each school is externally

validated by a peer principal and a senior executive from

the Principal School Leadership (PSL) team. In this

process, schools nominate where they position

themselves against the Schools Excellence Framework

and provide evidence to support their position which is

validated by the external team.

I thoroughly enjoyed the process of engaging with the

school leadership team and conducting professional

dialogue around the process of school improvement. The

whole process is very long and exhaustive with many

hours spent going through the school’s submission and

gathered evidence sets whilst comparing against

departmental processes and procedures. It was probably

some of the best professional learning I have done and I

look forward to putting the skills and knowledge towards

BHS validation process.

HSC At the time of printing, our Year 12 students have

completed their HSC examinations!

Congratulations to all. I look forward to celebrating with

you at the farewell dinner on Friday night.

Cyber Safety Session @ BHS

On Monday 29th both the BPS and BHS P&C Associations

hosted an information evening on cybersafety. We were

very lucky to have Senior Constable Paul Ebsworth, the

Murray River Police District Youth Liaison Officer address

a large gathering of about 60 community members. He

commended the audience on attending and showing

their support for our children, saying we were the largest

group of parents and community members that he has

presented to. Constable Ebsworth presented some very

valuable (and frightening at times) information about

generally keeping ourselves and most importantly, our

children, safe online.

Thanks must go to the P&C members who generously

donated food, to Barham High for the use of their library

and to Paul for presenting the session and giving us a lot

to think about and some realistic strategies to use in this

very technology-centred world. If any parents/carers

would like to know more information about a particular

topic, Paul is very obliging and would love to return at

any time and give his assistance. Do not hesitate to let

your P&C know and we will organise it for you.

TAS/PDHPE Report Stage 5 PE

This term the Year 9 PE class is completing their fitness

unit. Today the girls headed out to the Gunbower creek

for a brisk bush walk. The girls thoroughly enjoyed it

over there and set a good pace.

O’Donnell shield

BHS played Wade High over at the picturesque

Koondrook Cricket Oval. Barham won the toss and

elected to bat first and made a solid 120 from their 40

overs with Kade Watts and Ash Molin making a very

handy partnership. Wade HS then headed in to bat.

They looked nervous early on, before they took the long

handle approach and started making the runs quickly.

Thank you goes out to Tim Coote for organising the

wicket, and well done to the boys as this match was the

third round, we did very well to progress this far.

U15 Netball

The U15 Netball side played in Albury last week and

came up against some tough opposition but played some

good netball. The girls won one, drew one and lost two

narrowly. Well done girls!

Tennis Representative

Tatum Boyd travelled to Gosford last week after being

chosen to represent Riverina in tennis.

Tatum was selected as the number 4 girl (out of 9) in the

team, which is a great achievement as she is still only in Year

9. She won a number of her singles and doubles matches,

often playing girls much older than her. She remained

focused at all times and was a great team member. One

huge attribute was her attitude on and off court, never

giving up on any point.

Riverina achieved an overall position of 7th in the State

(after narrowly missing out by 1 set on 6th position on a

countback).

Vick Breust (Riverina Tennis Convenor & Riverina Girls

Manager) said Tatum was a privilege to take away and she

has represented Barham High School in an excellent

manner. She was very courteous on and off the court.

Questacon Science Circus

Catching Marshmallows

Last Wednesday, Ayla and Aaron from the Questacon

Science Circus wowed us with spectacular science

shows! Barham Primary Years 5 and 6 students had a

fabulous time learning all about structures and friction,

participating in a range of experiments and

demonstrations. The High School students got to see

some cool demos with liquid nitrogen, including an

awesome liquid nitrogen cloud! They also learnt about

air pressure and how it behaves, and a lucky few even

got to shoot marshmallows at Miss Dennis, who clearly

won’t be joining the Australian cricket team with her

catching skills any time soon! Thanks for visiting us

Science Circus, it was fabulous!

Line Rockets

Year 7 students have been busy continuing their

investigation of Forces. They’ve been investigating

electrostatics with the Van de Graf generator and using

Newton’s Laws to make rockets fly across the classroom.

A reminder, we are in need of recyclable items for their

assessment task, starting next week. Anything you have

would be greatly appreciated!

Year 8

Year 8 completed their VALID Science test this week. This

state-wide test is a great opportunity for the students to

show off their science knowledge and skills and is

essential to our planning and programming.

Congratulations to the students for giving it their best

shot.

Stage 5 Stage 5 will complete their exams in Weeks 5 and 6.

Students are reminded they have been given a revision

sheet to help them with their preparation. We can’t wait

for you to show us what you’ve learnt!

Visual Arts Stage 5 will have their exams in Weeks 5 and 6. Please

keep an eye on students’ diaries for more specific dates.

A heads up to save the date for our SHOWCASE for 2018.

It will be held on the evening of Tuesday 27th November,

which is in Week 7. This is a fantastic opportunity to see

the incredible works that students have created

throughout the year.

Careers Year 10 have been busy getting organised for their

upcoming Work Experience week. Students who have

organised placements will be heading out in Week 8.

Stay tuned for more updates throughout the term and

well done to the students for their superb organisation.
