L’Union économique et monétaire de l’Afrique de l’ouest (Uemoa) envisage de doubler sa production de riz d’ici

2018, en vue de réduire la dépendance de ses Etats membres dans l’importation du riz, a appris APA dimanche

auprès des responsables de la Commission dont le siège est à Ouagadougou.

On estime la production de riz dans l’union au cours de la campagne agricole 2012-2013, à 4 millions de

tonnes, selon le Comité permanent Inter-états de Lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahel (CILSS), dont 1,9

millions de tonnes provenant du Mali, 730 548 tonnes de la Côte d'Ivoire et 627 516 tonnes du Sénégal.

Rice sector trends in West Africa

In April 2013, the USDA published its annual report on rice in West Africa. The analysis estimates that

production of milled rice in marketing year (MY) 2012/13 in West Africa (excluding Nigeria) will reach 4 million

tonnes, up by 10.1% from the 3.6 million tonnes produced during poor rains in MY 2011/12 (which was down

13% on production in 2010/11).

En avril 2013, l’USDA a publié son rapport annuel sur le riz en Afrique de l’Ouest. L’analyse estime que la

production de riz blanchi pour la campagne de commercialisation 2012/13 en Afrique de l’Ouest (excepté au

Nigeria) atteindra 4 millions de tonnes, soit une hausse de 10,1 % par rapport aux 3,6 millions de tonnes

produites durant les périodes de faibles précipitations en 2011/12 (un niveau déjà inférieur de 13 % à la

production de 2010/11).

Inadequate supply of subsidized fertilizer, scarcity of insecticides and herbicides and lack of access to agric

loans for farmers are militating against increased production of rice in Argungu, Kebbi State, farmers in the area

have said.

The farmers lamented that though they have since planted rice for the season, the fear of inadequate supply of

fertilizer, lack of access roads to their farms to evacuate the products from their irrigation farms, high cost of

agro-chemicals, the danger of possible birds and insects invasion of farmlands and other problems that also

effect the two seasons production and sales, are giving them sleepless nights.

Wamakko approves N2 billion agric loan to rice, cassava farmers

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, has said arrangements had been concluded for the

disbursement of N2 billion agriculture loan to rice and cassava farmers in the state. He also said 6,000 tonnes

of fertiliser had been procured for distribution to farmers for this year's farming season. Speaking at the recent

launch of fertiliser sales in Rabah local government area of Sokoto state, Wamakko stated that his

administration had partnered Zenith bank for the disbursement of the N2 billion agriculture loan.

Two charged with stealing SH13 million rice

Two men were charged in a Mombasa court for falsely obtaining goods.

Mutua Munuve and Tony Dhiman are accused of obtaining 2,693 bags of maize and 1,950 bags of Pakistan rice

all valued at Sh13,395,883.

The prosecution, led by Samson Kiptum, alleged that on diverse dates between May 7 and May 10, jointly with

others not before court, the two obtained 355 bags of white maize valued at Sh1,129,268 from Fredrick Mutua

by falsely pretending that they were in a position to pay for the said maize. In the second count, the court heard

that the two accused obtained 370 bags of white maize valued at Sh1,041,610 from Maurice Kioko. They

committed the offence on May 8 at Kisauni district.

stabilisé alors que le riz local (1 275 Ar/kg) se voit augmenté de 1 % en moyenne avec une inflation de 10 % sur

L'alerte est donnée. La tendance actuelle du prix du riz laisse prévoir une perspective inquiétante pour cette

denrée stratégique pour les Malgaches. Selon le dernier chiffre de l'Observatoire du riz, le kilo du paddy

avoisine les 700 ariary dans tout Madagascar. Un niveau qui correspond à la situation actuelle dans l'Alaotra, le

grenier à riz au pays.

du riz. En effet, les producteurs et les collecteurs anticipent déjà une période de soudure plus difficile pour cette

année, à cause de la baisse de la production nationale. Ces dernières semaines, le niveau des prix de paddy et

de riz blanc est resté quasiment stable, au niveau national, d'après l'Observatoire.

Importation de riz: tendances à la hausse

Le temps n’a pas été en mesure de résoudre le problème de la production de riz au Cameroun. Depuis 2004, la

demande pour le riz n’a pas cessé d’augmenter et l’offre du riz produit localement est en baisse. Curieusement,

les mêmes acteurs de l’époque n’ont pas cessé de dessiner des plans pour augmenter la production et réduire

l’importation assez considérable. Même si on dit souvent que ne pas planifier, c’est planifier à l’échec, le cas au

Cameroun semble être différent : plus les plans pour produire plus de riz sont éclos, plus l’importation de riz

étranger augmente.

For the past four decades, the global rice market has been dominated by a few exporters, namely, Thailand,

Vietnam, the United States, and Pakistan, accounting for 60–70% of the total exports. During this period,

Thailand has remained the top rice exporter in the world. Unlike the export side, the import side looks quite

fragmented, with many countries each importing a small amount of rice. The top six importers account for only

20−30% of the market share.

Dans le delta du Mékong, les producteurs agricoles obtiennent 6 à 7 tonnes de riz par hectare en saison sèche

et 4 à 5 tonnes par hectare dans les saisons pluvieuses, utilisant des variétés de riz à maturation rapide qui

permettent d’obtenir jusqu’à trois récoltes annuelles consécutives. En revanche, les producteurs de riz de

l’Afrique de l’Ouest récoltent seulement 1,5 t par hectare de riz cultivé habituellement en milieu sec, tandis que

le rendement des céréales ne dépasse pas plus d’une tonne – une donnée comparable aux rendements de

l’Europe médiévale.

Rice Survivor: IRRI’s own reality show

Decoding patterns of climate change and rice diseases

surprised to find symptoms of an important rice disease called bacterial leaf streak during their field visit. “The

presence of bacterial leaf streak of rice was never reported before in this East African country,” said Drissa

In search of the perfect grain

race to feed the world, grain quality, is sometimes forgotten. Developing rice varieties without considering grain

quality can leave farmers with a low-value product and consumers with rice they find unappealing to eat. So,

IRRI is developing strategies to improve grain quality in rice with high yield potential.

Arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead are four ubiquitous trace elements known to have a harmful effect on

human health. These elements are naturally present at very low concentrations in the environment, and human

bodies are able to detoxify them in limited amounts.

Most of what we know about toxicity of these elements comes from case studies of people who were exposed to

the toxins through unrecognized pollution sources. In these cases, the people were exposed to the toxin through

many ways such as air, water, and food simultaneously. So far, no evidence shows clearly that rice

consumption, by itself, has had toxic effects on humans.
