Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! We open this issue with a focus on the validation of the Brazzaville roadmap which countries and institutions of central Africa, mostly belonging to the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, have agreed upon to increase the efficiency of participative forestry towards a more sustainable management of the second-largest forest basin of the planet. The roadmap was adopted at a meeting organized in Brazzaville by the Ministry of Forest Economy of the Republic of the Congo, with the support of FAO and the Ngo Nature+, and will be presented at the FAO African Forestry and Wildlife Commission, starting today in Dakar, Senegal, and at FAO’s Committee on Forestry - COFO24 - in July. (In French) Observing World Day against Child Labour, FAO warned that child labour has started to rise again, after years of decline, due partly to an increase in conflict and to climate change-related constraints in poor rural areas around the world. Not only is the wellbeing of millions of children at

stake in this alarming trend, but also the efforts of the international community at ending global hunger and poverty. (In English, Spanish and French) To contrast that worrisome trend and to raise awareness about child labour in the agricultural, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture sectors, FAO has joined forces with ILO to publish a free e-learning course. The course is available in English, Spanish and French. (In English) FAO is putting its technical expertise to good use in supporting climate-resilient adaptation projects and initiatives in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America. Funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF)'s Readiness Programme, these projects aim to help developing countries meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement, as well as adapting their agriculture and food security systems to the effects of climate change. (In English, Spanish and French) With a view to improving the livelihoods of rural peoples and particularly, of mountain smallholders, IFOAM – Organics International and FAO have signed an agreement to strengthen market access and value chains for small-scale producers. The agreement also aims to improve the conservation and use of biodiversity and to reduce food waste. FAO Forestry announcements Child labour in agriculture is on the rise, driven by conflict and disasters FAO News 12/06/18 After years of steady decline, child labour in agriculture has started to rise again in recent years driven in part by an increase in conflicts and climate-induced disasters. This worrisome trend, not only threatens the wellbeing of millions of children, but also undermines efforts to end global hunger and poverty, warned FAO today as it observed World Day Against Child Labour. Arabic, Chinese, Russian FAO helps countries lay the groundwork for climate-resilient initiatives FAO News 11/06/18 The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is supporting ten projects in countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and South America to lay the groundwork for climate-resilient adaptation initiatives, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF)'s Readiness Programme. ILO, FAO offer free course on elimination of child labour in agriculture FAO News Africa 06/06/18 FAO and ILO are jointly publishing a free e-learning course to raise awareness about child labour among the main actors in the agricultural, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture sectors. The course available in English, French and Spanish is timely, considering that disclosures in the ILO global report for 2012-2016 show that almost 71 per cent of 152 million child labourers globally work in agriculture. New agreement with IFOAM – Organics International to improve mountain livelihoods FAO forestry newsroom 01/06/18 IFOAM - Organics International and FAO signed an agreement to improve the livelihoods of rural peoples, including mountain smallholders, by strengthening market access and value chains for small-scale producers, enhancing the conservation and use of biodiversity and reducing food loss and food waste. Protecting the right to a childhood FAO News: Stories 12/06/18 Around 70 percent of all child labourers work in agriculture (livestock, forestry, fishing or aquaculture) – that’s an increase of 12 percent, or 10 million more girls and boys, since 2012. Clearly, this is not an easy problem to erase, but it’s also an issue that we need to tackle to protect the well-being of millions of children. Productores de frutos amazónicos del Beni se reúnen con la FAO para mostrar los avances de sus emprendimientos FAO Noticias Bolivia 06/06/18 La producción de pulpas de asaí, copuazú y majo, y la actividad cacaotera dinamizan emprendimientos de familias en el municipio de Riberalta, en el departamento del Beni, con potencialidades que aún pueden ser fortalecidas. El programa, denominado “Fortalecimiento de la economía social comunitaria a través de la gestión integral y sustentable del bosque amazónico”, tiene en Riberalta una de sus zonas de acción. Progression du travail des enfants dans l’agriculture, les conflits et les catastrophes en cause FAO Nouvelles 12/06/18 Après plusieurs années de déclin, le travail des enfants dans le secteur agricole a de nouveau connu une hausse ces dernières années. Une situation qui s'explique par une multiplication des conflits et des catastrophes provoquées par le changement climatique. Cette tendance, pour le moins inquiétante, menace le bien-être de millions d'enfants et compromet aussi les efforts visant à éradiquer la faim dans le monde et la pauvreté, a averti aujourd'hui la FAO à l'occasion de la journée mondiale contre le travail des enfants. Miscellaneous 2018 Call for concept notes: the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme is now accepting concept notes from government institutions, civil society and private sector organizations in countries engaged in VPAs with the EU Grants up to USD 110 000 are channelled through the Programme to support ongoing VPA processes in targeted countries. The selection of proposals will be done through two phases. In the first phase, all eligible applicants are invited to submit concept notes. In the second phase, proponents of selected concept notes will be asked to submit full project proposals. The deadline for submission of the concept notes is 29 June 2018.

Mazhilis approves law ratifying Kazakh-UNFAO agreement The Astana Times 15/06/18 The Mazhilis (lower house of Parliament) approved the draft law “On ratification of the agreement between the Kazakh Government and FAO on the establishment of the FAO Liaison and Partnership Bureau in Kazakhstan” at a June 13 plenary meeting. FAO has been coordinating with Kazakhstan since the country’s accession to the organisation in 1997.

Chile We burned the forest': the indigenous Chileans fighting loggers with arson The Guardian 14/06/18 Chile’s Mapuche people are resorting to increasingly radical tactics to reclaim their ancestral land from exploitive industries. China Study reveals China’s new forests aren’t really forests Mongabay.com 07/06/18 In the late 1990s, China instituted ambitious reforestation policies to mitigate flooding disasters. By 2013, these policies had convinced famers to plant more than 69.2 million acres of trees on what once was cropland and scrubland. By 2015, China’s tree cover had increased by 32 percent. But a recently published study reveals most reforestation efforts simply planted one tree species, making a plot of reforested land ecologically akin to a monoculture plantation.

It is believed to be the sanctuary of Swayne's Hartebeest whose species are endangered to be extinct.
