A last-minute goal on Saturday caused Minnesota to settle for one point on the road as it drew 2-2 with the Ottawa Fury. United struck first off a corner as Jeb Brovsky flicked a headed ball to Christian Ramrirez on the back post who slammed the ball into the top of the net. Ottawa got on the board with an own goal after a cross deflected off Brovsky and into the net. United answered back 15 minutes from time as Ben Speas directed a ball from Kevin Venegas into the goal. The Fury capitalized on a dropped ball in the final minute of stoppage time to score on an empty net to steal a point from United.

Loons Return Home Looking for VictoryA tough result last weekend was a bump in the road to the Spring Championship for Minnesota United. Fortunately, the other teams at the top haven’t pulled away from the pack, leaving the Loons in striking distance as they host the Jacksonville Armada. The Armada are off to a rocky start under new coach Tony Meola, and are currently on a two game losing streak. Jacksonville has not met the production it had last season and currently has the least amount of goals in the NASL. It will be hoping to not repeat the results of its inaugural season games in Minnesota, which were heavily lopsided in favor of the home side.

Miguel Gallardo has played with United’s Jamie Watson several times over the years, beginning in 2008 with the Austin Aztec U23 team. Gallardo and Watson once again teamed up from 2011 to 2013 with Orlando City SC, where they were coached by and played with Ian Fuller.

Mechack Jérome also was at Orlando with Watson and Fuller from 2011 through 2012.

Beto Navarro joined Lance Laing on FC Edmonton’s roster for the 2014 season.

Bryan Burke has been a teammate of many United players. He played alongside Christian Ramirez and Kevin Venegas on the NPSL’s Orange County Blue Star in 2010. He then joined Orlando City’s ranks with Watson and Fuller in 2013 and 2014.

Pekka Lagerblom played in front of Kristian Nicht with Alemannia Aachen in 2007.

Alex Dixon and Danny Cruz were both on the U.S. U17 National Team in 2007. They reunited in 2011 when Dixon signed with the Houston Dynamo.

Junior Sandoval was a teammate of Aaron Pitchkolan in 2011 when both played for the Puerto Rico Islanders.

ABOUT JACKSONVILLE ARMADA FCJacksonville was awarded an NASL franchise in July 2013 and announced the team would be named Jacksonville Armada in February 2014. The team held several tryouts in 2014 and 2015 to find local talent to build its roster, and generate excitement for the arrival of the club.

The Armada plays its home matches at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, but has hosted matches at EverBank Field. Jacksonville has set both the NASL preseason and regular season attendance records with 13,934 and 16,164 fans respectively.

Jacksonville has been quite successful for an expansion team, moving up the standings very quickly to contend for the Spring Championship in its first year, but fell flat in the Fall season to finish at the bottom of the table.

In preparation for 2016, the Armada made some changes in its technical staff while maintaining the core of its roster. U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame member Tony Meola took control of the squad, hoping to build up the new club into a long-term contender in the NASL.

• Jacksonville is 0-4-13 all-time when playing on the road.

• The Armada have not scored a second half goal so far in 2016.

• Jacksonville has the second youngest team in the league with an average age of 26.4 years old. Minnesota has the fifth oldest at 28.8 years old.

• Jacksonville is second least amount of cards in the NASL, with only nine cautions so far, trailing Rayo OKC by one.

• United is undefeated in its last four games, and is also unbeaten in its last 12 home matches. This run goes back to July 12th of last year. In that span at NSC Stadium, Minnesota has only conceded six goals and scored 20. Its biggest win in that time was 4-0 thrashing of the Armada July 15th, 2015.

• Kevin Venegas has set up Ben Speas on all three of his goals so far this season, earning assists on two. His last assist tied him for the all-time club record of 13 set by Simone Bracalello. Christian Ramirez and Justin Davis are both one assist away from tying as well.

• Venegas is also closing in on another milestone. He closing in on the 100 appearances in all competitions with the club, currently sitting at 96. Only four players in club history have reached the century mark: Justin Davis (141), Simone Bracalello (104), Cristiano Dias (102), and Kyle Altman (101). Davis is the only player to have over 100 starts with 140 to his credit.

• On average, United scores a goal every 50 minutes of play this season. The Loons averaged a goal every 50.7 minutes over the course of last season.

• United has taken seven points in three games against the Armada.

• The last time these two teams met in Minnesota, United tied its team record for largest margin of victory with a 4-0 win. The club has reached this mark four times in club history, the two most recent were against teams in their inaugural season in the league.

• Sammy Ndjock is poised to make his 30th start for United this weekend. He already has racked up 15 wins and 10 clean sheets in just over a season with the club.

• The matches between these clubs have kept officials busy. In three games, the two teams have combined for a total of 18 yellow cards and two cards. Minnesota is responsible for eight yellow cards and no reds.

• Jacksonville has had three different head coaches since the club began NASL play last season.

• Minnesota has earned 30 corners so far this season while only giving opponents 13.

• United has not been held scoreless since September 19th, 2015. The Loons have scored at least one goal in 12 straight matches.

The North American Soccer League (NASL) is a professional soccer league with eleven teams in the United States and Canada. It is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) as the Division II league in the American league system. Its headquarters are in New York City. Named after the North American league of the 70’s and 80’s, The modern NASL was founded in 2009, and began play in 2011 following a 2010 season that saw NASL and USL teams play in a combined temporary Division II league.

The NASL uses a split-season schedule running from April to early November, with a four-week break in July. The spring and fall champions, along with the two teams with best combined records, meet in a four-team single elimination tournament known as The Championship. The winner of the final claims the Soccer Bowl at the end of the season.
