With investments of more than US$ 200 Billion already allocated to the development of land transport, especially the rail networks, the GCC have now entered a new and vital phase in the completion of the basic infrastructure of economic and commercial integration in the region, while also establishing the basis for wider linkages with neighboring regions that extend to the heart of Europe and the countries of Asia.

The GCC countries have invested heavily over many decades in their economies and continue to spend lavishly on developing basic and energy-related industries, while also allocating enormous funds to higher education and research related to existing and planned industries. These investments have created considerable production capacity to satisfy both their local and export markets, and for that purpose significant capital was also invested in the development of seaports and handling, storage and logistics facilities. But the Gulf countries have also come to realize the strategic importance of a comprehensive land transport networks of roads and railroads for the success of efforts to develop industry and other productive sectors, to the extent that these networks accelerate the movement of goods and people and thus promote their competitive advantage in terms of cost as well as in the quality of service to customers in the region and worldwide.

In conjunction with monetary union and the integrated electricity grid, plans for comprehensive GCC road and railroads will support the region’s economic, monetary and customs union and boost the drive towards the establishment of a GCC common market similar to what has been achieved in Europe. The final result of all these efforts will be the emergence of the GCC countries as a regional economic power with a combined GDP of around $2 trillion and a total population of around 53 million by the year 2020

Railway and metro projects for freight and the transport of passengers top the list of GCC transport projects with total investments exceeding US$100 billion. National railway projects in each of the GCC countries will integrate with the joint GCC railway project, a 2200 km network that will link the six Gulf countries at a total cost of more than US$ 15.4 billion. This network will carry passengers and goods at speeds of 200 km/h and 80-120 km/h, respectively.

Engineering design work on the project is underway in all the GCC countries and expected to be completed by 2012, while the completion and commissioning of the entire network is expected by 2017/2018

Accordingly, it is expected that the GCC region and the Middle East generally will become the largest site for rail projects in the world in the coming five years. These Railway networks will be integrated within the various transport modes to create a complete and efficient transport system, that can accelerate economic and social development in the GGC countries and the wider Middle East. The GCC region is thus expected to become a major pole of interest for international engineering and contracting companies, as well as local, regional and foreign companies active in the transport industry.
