First Community Center in Grand Bayou Since Katrina Opens

Led by the donations of Davie Shoring and several local Plaquemines businesses, the first community center in Grand Bayou since Katrina had its ribbon cutting recently. Attended by area leaders, including 7th District Parish Councilwoman Aubrey Trafant Savant, whose district houses Grand Bayou, the ceremony was brief but poignant. Several other parish officials attended the ribbon cutting, which was announced earlier this year in Plaquemines and Westbank Plus! The center was the culmination of many years of efforts by numerous entities and the residents of Grand Bayou now have a place to hold their events.

“Fireman’s Prayer”When I am called to duty, God whenever flames may rage, give me the strength to save

some life Whatever be its age. Help me to embrace a little child before it’s too late,or some older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and give the best in me, to guard my neighbor and protect his property.and if according to my fate I am to lose my life,

Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Just had a nasty front come through with days of strong south wind followed by a series of strong thunder storms. Todd from North Carolina and I went back and forth deciding to cancel or not. He was looking at fishing with me for 2 days. Last minute decided to put on his big boy pants and battle the elements. That we did. The first day I went by Joshua’s and looked at the waters. Water was dirtier than the Mississippi and the waves were splashing on the gas pump platform. The water was high due to the wind direction. It was a very strong 25 kt. wind with gusts. I would have to go east for any protection. Launched at Venice Marina and we expected a rough day all around. We were not disappointed.

As I moved around we found some nice fish but that cut was only so big and we eventually hit it all. It was the best stop of the day.

I left the sheltered cove and continued out to where I wanted to go. The water was clean but the winds were strong. I buried the power pole deep and the boat was still dragging and it was very difficult to fish there.

A waitress asked me to bring her some fish for her family. My customers did not want to keep any fish so we only kept four for her. All the rest went back. We did well for the windy conditions we faced all day.

At our first stop the water was unusually high which pushes the redfish into the canes looking for food. Everything was stirred up even in the protected places. We only had a chance at what ever fish came out of the canes. To add to our tough conditions we had a rising tide all day long. It took a while but Mark landed the first redfish. Don’t let the pictures fool you I was in a well protected cove. He then picks up a stingray and a rat red at 15 3/4 inches. It took a long while but Todd gets hit after a very long cast with the wind. He finally has a chance to get a Venice redfish picture.

We only picked up one more in that area. It was almost noon with 3 fish in the box. I decided to go across the bay and find a semi protected place on the other side. Half way across the bay I change my mind. It is too rough. I make a long run across the river to the other side. As I am heading to my other destination I spot water a bit cleaner. I stop and turn in there. This is a small dead end but it held some nice fish.

It was soon evident that I made the right move. We had some beautiful fish in this place. Although the bite was still slow the water was nicer, the alligators and otters were watching us and the fish we were getting were all quality fish with great color.

On the way home I found this little guy sitting in the road. I picked it up and put it in my boat. It is now living in the pond in my back yard. I am quite sure it will do very well there.

The front remained above us and the winds had not shifted as forecasted. In a way that was bad because the water was still high. I launched in Buras and did not to stray too far. The winds were a bit more favorable but the rain was upon us. We had light rain most of the morning but it was to get rough with thunderstorms around 10:00. I went to a place that I thought would be good for us. All the fish we would keep would be cleaned by me and given away to people in the neighbor hood. Our targeted fish for today would be trout. Well things do not go as planned. The first fish was a total surprise for us.

This was another one for the picture album. These fish are all fat. After that surprise catch we settled down for some trout catching. I did not use the net for any trout and until they got the hang of swimming the fish into the boat we lost quite a few very nice trout. We kept donning our rain gear and removing it as needed with the rain. We picked away and managed to get some very nice trout in the box. I did not measure any trout so if there was any question of size they got a reprieve and went back.

About 9:30 as forecasted the lightning and thunder got closer. I could see the storms coming and decided we had to run into safety now. I did not spare any horses as the winds picked up with the storm approaching. There was no electricity in this cell but it was nasty to say the least. We held at Joshua’s for about an hour then went back out. The winds died down and changed direction. Although the tide still had 5 hours left to rise the water pushed up in the marsh was now flowing out of the marsh. Although the conditions had changed the trout were still here but not as aggressive. It soon became evident as the trout bite almost ended altogether. It seems a bunch of bulls came in to feed on the trout. After about 5 of these the bite ended altogether.

We all got into the act including me. It was not much longer that I decided to see what was on the open flats. Todd got the last and only skinny bull in this place before we left. What it lacked in thickness it made up for with color.

Once out on the flats the trout were not as active as I had found them before. The change in winds and water flow slowed everything down except the hardhead cats. The few trout we caught here were all good keepers except the almost 8 incher I caught on a Vu Du shrimp. Todd did battle with a bull shark for quite some time until it cut the line above the hook. Around 1:30 the line of the heavy weather was about to hit us and we called it for the day. Back at my place we got out of all our wet cloths and took pictures of our catch. We had 1 La. limit of 25 trout and 1 N.C. limit of 4 trout for a total of 29 trout along with 1 flounder and 2 sheepshead. If I was not had a charter I would not have gone out scouting either of those days. 2 successful days under adverse weather conditions. Glad they decided to come and they had the right clothing for both days. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.CAPT HOOP -- Our Freedom Charters 504-247-8459

THE BEST $17 BET I EVER LOSTby Tony Onellion

It was the summer of 1969 and I was the News Director of KRAE radio in Cheyenne, Wyoming. We were THE station in a four radio station market. We played mostly rock but also had a morning talk show, “What Do You Think?” with station manager Tom Bauman. Amazingly, there was no country music station in the market, so KRAE created a morning show on Saturday mornings hosted by a crusty guy who might have been Wynn Stewart who had a country band in Bakersfi eld, California in the late 1950’s and early ’60s. All I know is that this fella and I and two other young on-air voices would usually have breakfast after his shift ended at 9 AM at a local restaurant.

We’d talk about different things and this gentleman talked about helping out Roger Miller when he got his start in pop radio. One morning, he was talking about his past as a leader of a country band when he brought up the fact that he helped Merle Haggard get his start after Haggard left San Quentin in 1960. One of our guys, Roger Mack, sort of chuckled under his breath “yeah, Merle Haggard!”

Stewart, (I’m assuming) was not the kind of man you challenged. In a rough and ready state like Wyoming, you said what you meant without hesitation. Stewart looked at the 23-year old Mack and said, “Roger, are you doubting my word?” Well, if they had been wearing guns, they would have been outside in minutes for a showdown. Before the smirking Mack could fi nd words, Stewart turned to me and said, “What about you, Tony?” I replied, “well, it sounds a little far fetched…” and before I could say more, Stewart looked at Paul Harbison, the oldest of the three of us and asked him the same question. When it was obvious there was no turning back, Stewart said, for all in the restaurant to hear, “you want to make a little bet on this?” Well, we were on the spot. Like the old EF Hutton commercial, when KRAE personalities spoke, everyone listened. Stewart pulled out his wallet, grabbed two twenties and a ten and said to the owner of the restaurant, “hold this $50. Boys, pull out $17 each, you guys match me and the extra dollar is just that!” Well, we had to do it, even though we didn’t know what the bet was. Once the money was secured, Stewart said, “The bet is I’ll bring Merle Haggard to town in concert within 30 days at the Armory” We thought the bet was a long shot at best and accepted (although we really couldn’t have backed out even if we wanted to).

Two weeks later, the station started running ads “Wynn Stewart presents Merle Haggard in concert, such and such a date, at the Cheyenne Armory” and fl iers started appearing all around town. Of course, we had all access passes to the concert, which went off without a fl aw to a sellout crowd. After the performance, before a brief encore, Stewart brought The Hag himself backstage to meet three thoroughly chagrined young broadcasters. After the restaurant owner counted out the money, Stewart said, “boys, I want you to meet a good friend of mine…Merle Haggard.” The man who had just recorded “Okie from Muskogee” looked at us, gave us that Haggard/Eastwood squint and said, “ if it wasn’t for this man here, I probably would have gone back to prison. He helped me get my start. I understand you boys doubted his word and made a bet with him. Tell me…if he tells you the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, what will you believe?” We all mumbled, “…rises in the west and sets in the east.” With that, Haggard said, “well, you boys learned your lesson and some humility as well. Now let me do an encore and I’ll be backstage afterwords and we all can drink some beer.” He did and we did. It was the best $17 bet I ever lost and last week we lost one of the best country singers of the post-60’s generation on his 79th birthday, Merle Haggard. Merle, I’ve met a lot of celebrities over the years but your day with the three of us was one of the greatest. Thank you for all your heartfelt numbers, especially my favorite, “If We Make It Through December.” Merle Haggard died on his 79th birthday, as he predicted. “Mama Tried” but Merle tried harder and along with Willie Nelson, no country singer personifi ed the changes of the genre like Merle Haggard. On second thought…sorry, Willie. Just Merle. He stands alone.

IMPATIENS FOR SUN AND SHADEThe very common summer annual, Impatiens walleriana, is well known amongst southern gardeners. They go by several different names like “Busy Lizzies”, “Patience Plants”, but most of us just refer to them as “Impatiens”. They are prized for their long-lasting beauty during the summer in shadier areas of the garden. Impatiens have been available to gardeners for a long time and because of this you will find several different varieties at the garden center. Most impatiens, including Super Elfin, Dazzler, and Fiesta will require but full to part shade but with the addition of SunPatiens gardeners can now grow impatiens in the sun.

Super Elfin and Dazzler varieties are the basic form of the plant. The flower colors come in white, pink, red, purple, and everything in between. The Fiesta variety has beautiful rose like flowers and comes in various shades of red, pink, white. All three varieties with get about 12 inches tall and wide so look to plant them 12 inches apart. Unlike the previous three, the SunPatien can grow in sunny locations. They also produce a larger plant, reaching heights up to 2 ½ feet at the end of the growing season. So increase your plant spacing to 18 inches to accommodate. The flowers come in white, red, pink, and orange. Check out your local nursery to see what is available in your area.

ORGANIC PEST CONTROL IN THE GARDENOrganic gardening is slowly becoming a way of life for many gardeners. Whether you want to stop using chemical pesticides or to start growing with a more natural approach, organic gardening can be enjoyed by many. One of the major challenges of growing vegetables in South Louisiana is dealing with all of the insect and disease pressures. When you walk down the garden aisle at one of the big home improvement stores you are bombarded with all kinds of products labeled to control insect and disease pests. If you look carefully, you will find several organic approved products that will help you stand a chance amongst all those pests. Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring bacterial organism commonly referred to as Bt, dipel, or thuricide. It is highly effective on all caterpillar pests. It must be ingested by the caterpillars in order to work properly so be sure to coat the leaves where young caterpillars are eating. Insecticidal soaps can be very effective on soft bodied insects like aphids, scales and whiteflies. The trick is to mix a spray solution at the proper concentration and apply it with good coverage. Botanicals are insecticides derived from plants and can also provide some good protection. One of most common botanical insecticides is pyrethrin. It provides control for a wide variety if pests. Lastly, horticultural oils are another effective means to control insect and disease pests. Like with insecticidal soaps be sure to get good coverage when applying. They work by covering insects with a thin layer of oil and smothering them. Oils can also prevent disease infection by lining foliage with a thin layer of oil, blocking fungal spores from coming into direct contact. As you can see, even organic growers have a few tools in the toolbox for dealing with pests. All you have to do is read the product labels and look for OMRI approval. The Organic Materials Research Institute publishes a list of approved products for use on organic farms and it can be found at their website. www.omri.org

P.A.W.S. • 455 F. Edward HebertBelle Chasse, LA 70037Spring is HERE! Adopt, Don’t SHOP!

Argentina is a beautiful tortie that came to PAWS as a stray. She is a friendly, sweet, playful kitten looking for her forever home! She gets along with all the kittens in our kitten room and can usually be found climbing the cat tree, chasing toys, or snuggling with her friends. Argentina is up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped, and spayed.

This cutie is Miranda and we can’t even believe the progress she has made since she fi rst came to us! Miranda is a 2 year old Lab mix, but when we fi rst laid eyes on her she looked more like a lizard than a dog. She had one of the worst cases of demodex, a non-contagious form of mange, we have seen. She had no fur, open sores all over, her skin was scaly and cracked, her bones stuck out, and her eyes and nose were constantly crusted over. She didn’t move for the fi rst few days and we worried our efforts would be too little too late. After a few good meals she started standing but was terrifi ed of people. She would shake with fear when someone went near her or petted her head, although she would let you. After consistent medical care and love from the staff Miranda is a different dog. Her hair is almost all the way back and she runs up to you from her kennel now. She is still very shy with strangers but slowly gaining trust. She is wonderfully sweet, calm, and gentle. She loves laying her head in your lap and playing with her doggie friends here. Miranda got a second chance at a great life and we can’t wait to see who is lucky enough to add this precious girl to their home!

This beautiful girl is Miss Kitty. She came to PAWS as an owner surrender. Her human had a change in lifestyle and was no longer able to take care of Miss Kitty any longer. She is a very friendly, lovable girl looking for her forever home. Miss Kitty has allergies that sometimes causes hair loss. Snuggling with you on the sofa would be great!! Bird watching out the window would be lots of fun too. Miss Kitty is up to date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped.

This adorable blue-coated baby is Angie! Angie is 5 year old Terrier mix with a lot of love to give. She was found as a stray and borderline emaciated when she came to Animal Control. She had low energy, barely lifted her head, and you could see all of her ribs and spine. After a few good meals (and countless treats from everyone on staff) Angie became a totally different dog! She showed she’s spunky and social - she just needed some TLC to get there. Angie is very playful but calms down easily. After running in the yard for a few minutes she likes to perch on the agility equipment (pictured) and get head scratches. Angie is currently being treated for heartworms and can be fostered and have her adoption fi nalized once her treatment is completed. This sweet girl deserves a forever family and she’s just waiting to meet you!

Happy boy Fletch is hoping for a family of his own that he can love on and show off for! Fletch has been with us since May, and has progressed SO much since then. He was always loving and playful, but it was clear he hadn’t had structure in his life, had never been kenneled, or put on a leash. Now Fletch is our most well-trained dog, all thanks to our wonderful staff and volunteer trainers working with him consistently. Fletch can walk perfectly on a leash, has stopped jumping, and sits and stays until you say he can move! He recently learned to release - or give toys back to keep playing fetch. Although he has learned a lot, Fletch is clearly getting bored in his kennel and we hope he fi nds a family soon. Come see everything this boy can do and consider taking him home with you!

Hi Everyone, isn’t the weather beautiful? This past weekend was absolutely gorgeous! And with all the fairs and festivals going on, it completely fl ew by. There was no time for anyone to be bored with the fairs and festivals that were going on. There will also be tons of things going this coming weekend also. My daughter, Kelly, will be down at Fort Jackson for the Buras Vol. Fire Dept. Oil Field Crawfi sh Boil-Off. She and her Boil-Off Queens will be in the Souvenir Booth. So if you make it to Fort Jackson stop by and tell her hello. I, on the other hand, will be at the Westwego Farmers and Fisheries Market at the 5th Annual Cooking For Kicks Crawfi sh Cook Off. The funds are raised for dancers from MMDA to attend and compete in competitions. So, if you are looking for something to do this weekend, these are two really great places to be. The date is Sat. April 16 for both events. Come on out and enjoy some delicious crawfi sh and have a wonderful time.

TREATED WOOD SAFE FOR RAISED BEDS

Raised garden beds are popular in Louisiana because of high annual rainfall. Boxes and other retainers used to achieve a high and well-drained bed should be made of treated wood because the state’s moist climate promotes destructive organism. Most of the protected wood purchased today is CCA treated. The wood has been preserved by pressure-treated, with an EPA-registered pesticide containing inorganic arsenic to protect it from insect attack and decay.Recent concerns raised about human health and the environmental safety of treated woods are not supported by research evidence from universities, EPA or the wood Preservers Institute. However, wood treated with inorganic arsenic should be used only where such protection is important. The Environmental Protection Agency does not restrict the use of CCA-treated timbers for vegetable gardens, but people are frightened of arsenic (a component of CCA, along with copper and chromium) even though it occurs naturally in vegetables, living organisms and the soil. The level of arsenic that naturally and safely occurs in soils is between 1 and 20 parts per million. The added durability of pressure treatment makes wood treated with CCA preservatives the perfect product of tomato stakes and for building raised and terraced gardens, mushroom trays, trellises, arbors, garden furniture, compost bins, walkway steps, fl ower bed edging and planters.Assertion that gardeners should not grow edibles in planters or raised beds made with treated wood is not backed by scientifi c evidence of potential harm. The forest products industry and the U.S. Forest Service have been conducting research for more than 40 years to determine whether preservatives from treated wood migrate into the soil. Stake tests have shown no evidence that suffi cient depletion occurs to pose signifi cant risks to human health or the environment.Contact of treated wood with drinking water – pilings, docks, piers or bridges – is acceptable. Moreover, CCA-treated wood can be used for animal drinking water troughs. Do not use treated wood where it is likely to become a component of food or animal feed. Also, it should not be used for those portions of beehives which come in contact with honey or in structures for storing silage.Dispose pressure-treated wood scraps through normal trash collection or by burial. Do not burn treated wood because combustion breaks the unique bond formed between the preservative solution and the wood cellulose. When this bond is destroyed, the components of the preservative are released in the form of ash and particulates, which can be harmful if inhaled. The best environmental solution is to re-use the wood. CCA-treated wood scraps can be used in secondary uses such as decorative garden borders, planters, steps and other backyard amenities.

With all the festivals going on, their all also a lot of birthdays. We have a total of 11 in the month of April in our family. WOW! Such a busy month! But, not only for me, for a lot of others also. I was asked to make Tule Buff Balls for a very special little girl’s birthday. And she wanted bright happy colors. After looking a couple stores with no success, I headed to Hobby Lobby. I have a love hate relationship with that store. It takes all my will power not to buy everything I see. But, of course they had the colors I needed. I can always count on them. These Tulle Puffs are so easy to make. Simply wrap the tulle around a book or piece of cardboard. Slide it off the cardboard tie it in the center, cut open the ends, trim, fl uff them out. And there you have it! Bright colorfully fl uff balls! You can hang them, glue them to a paper mache fl ower pot, or just lay them on a table. Such a fun easy project for any type of party. Well, that’s my project for this time. So…what will your next craft be? Mine.…I don’t know. But I know it will be fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson.
