I established Graphic Change (a registered 501(c)3 organization) in 2005 with a vision to improve theeffectiveness, awareness, and impact of organizations or causes that supports society and the environment, through creating successful graphic design components and systems. As the Founder and Director of a start-up organization, many other skills have been acquired such as accounting and bookkeeping, budget-ing, managing, supervising, fund-raising, developing marketing strategies and negotiation tactics, prob-lem-solving and contract writing. Projects include The Egyptian Museum Graphic Improvement Project and Yayasan Emmanuel Water Program.

identity The logo resembles ‘who you are’ and ‘what you can be’ through Graphic Change. The concept of ‘thinking outside the box’ is also apparent when applied to the business cards andletterhead shown here.

As stated by Dr. Zahi Hawass, General Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, “The Egyptian Museum was founded over a century ago, at a time when the importance of provid-ing excellent signs, labels, and other educational materials in museums was not yet recognized. As a consequence, fundamental graphic materials such as navigational signs are woefully lack-ing. As we begin to face the enormous challenge of modernizing this great institution, we are fortunate to have the support of Graphic Change, an American non-profit organization.”

brochure This is the first brochure for any museum in Egypt. Created in both English and Arabic, it contains the most up to date, complete and comprehensive maps available (made from scratch). Each section of the museum is clearly color-coded with general informa-tion about the topic and items displayed in that section. Information about museum hours, admission costs, general guidelines, information for visitors in wheelchairs, contact informa-tion and general information about the museum itself were also written and included.

logo The logo incorporates a ‘shen ring’, a hieroglyphic meaning ‘eternity’, which is what the ancient Egyptian civilization lived for. Clearly legible in both large and small scales, the color reflects the color of the building and works well in black & white. There is an elegant flow in the com-position between the bilingual text and image.(At their discretion, the Supreme Council of Antiquities may adopt this logo.)

The idea behind this project is to allow the general public to gain more appreciation of these antiquities through providing clear information not only of the museum’s facilities, but of the collection itself. As the Project Manager and Director, working with this world-renowned mu-seum and the Egyptian government has strengthened my communication skills, and managing capabilities. Aside from creating and applying this concept, I was in charge of budgeting, fund-raising, attaining official approvals and copyrights, hiring contractors, conducting meetings, problem-solving and developing sustainable procedures.

symbol & color system Using iconic symbols and color-coding systems is the most effective way to bridge the communication gap between all languages and cultures of people who visit this museum. Therefore, I have created a symbol system that also incorporates actual ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to identify the various facilities and collections in the museum; allowing the signage system to be more reflective of the museum’s collection at the same time being educational and interactive.

A color code system was created to differentiate and unify multiple time periods displayed on the lower floor, and various themes displayed on the upper floor. The strategic use of color for the facility symbols unifies the building by bringing in the color of the outside of the museum in the interior.

An important aesthetic aspect of the signage system is marring the Neoclassical structure of the building with the collections it displays. The material for the signs that best supports the overall concept is Corian®, a durable granite-like material. (Granite was not only widely used in the Neoclassical era, but also by the ancient Egyptians as a symbol for eternity.)The installation of ‘click & lock’ frameworks allow the signage system to be very versatile and accommodate continuous changes that occur within the museum. Below are 5 of the 8 differ-ent types of signs make up the complete system, consisting of approximately 330 signs in total.

Yayasan Emmanuel Water Program works with disadvantaged Indonesian communities to build public health & hygiene awareness through sustainable environmental engineering service proj-ects. Therefore, I have created an identity system, promotional materials, and currently building a health & hygiene manual that will allow this non-profit organization better reach their goals. As the Communications Officer, I develop marketing material, created templates (such as their newsletter), as well as troubleshoot and update the website.

Promotional materials that are eye-catching, clear and convincing are vital to the success of a non-profit organization. It was important to clearly understand and convey their message.I am still working with YE Water Program to create a public health promotion manual that will become a useful teaching tool for employees to be able to raise environmental awareness through public health & hygiene promotion and water & sanitation projects on-site. Project is scheduled January 16th to February 16th 2009 on location in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Harley Davidson Egypt Chapter requested me to design an invitation to advertise theirup-coming trip around Egypt. I worked with the Chapter’s Director to attain the contentand message, and advised the invitation’s form and distribution process. They were very pleased, because the response to this advertisement was much higher than expected.

poster card The information and trip schedule are conveyed clearly with the aid of a mapped route and photographs from a previous trip. This invitation was printed as a poster card that was displayed in their lounge, as well as created and distributed as an e-mail attachment.

The owner of this local supermarket was looking to boost customer numbers, and build a suc-cessful branding strategy before a competitor opened it’s doors around the corner. I researched and came up with a strong graphic campaign to retain and increase customer loyalty. Addition-ally, by creating fun and eye-catching graphics the store became more personal and inviting. The result was successful, as he not only retained his customers, but acquired new ones who noticed the campaign.

graphic campaign Knowing that word-of-mouth is one of the strongest forms of advertisement amongst expatriate communities (the store’s target audience), I gathered quotations from existing customers about why they choose to shop at Miriam Market versus other stores. Combining these quotes with the store’s logo helped to strengthen the market brand, and increased customer numbers.

Fresh, Inc. is a high-end body care and cosmetic company with 11 independent stores, over 15 department store locations, and in over 150 Sephora stores world-wide. As a part of their Graphic Design team, I was responsible of creating seasonal, environmental and label graphics that reflected their image across the globe in all of their locations. Reporting directly to theCo-Founder of the company, I was exposed to how a Design team intricately works within a large company, and helped create systems that bridged the communication gap betweendifferent departments.

product display information graphics Information panel graphics were needed in over 150 Sephora stores worldwide to describe product information and prices. These graphics changed season-ally, reflecting the image of Fresh and it’s new products. I also developed a communication and check system between our on-site representatives, ensuring smooth updates and a strong image for customers.

In addition to seasonal environmental graphics, I created 3-D graphics for gift boxes and cer-tificates, and photographed many products for the website. I also worked directly with printers in both Boston and New York, ensuring the quality and outcome of printed material. As a part of the Graphic Design department, we were responsible for maintaining and improving upon the strong image of Fresh, Inc. worldwide.

gift certificates & boxes 3-D graphics were de-signed to personalize gift certificates and boxes that were used in Fresh stores, and even in gift bags at the Oscar®Awards.

environmental graphics Large-scale environmental graphics were created seasonally in the 11 different Fresh stores in the US, France, London and Korea to communicate the new seasonal style. The graphics in the window shown here was for the spring 2005 season, which incorporated graphics from the new make-up line that had just launched.

The owner of Cellar Door already had a successful logo and menu covers, but needed a design layout for the inside menu spreads, as well as a take-away menu that reflected their image, style and logo. Knowing that menu items and prices change frequently, I created a template in Ado-be Illustrator® for each menu type and trained the staff to make simple updates and changes.I also generated a map to clarify the restaurant’s exact location, which has overall improved their awareness to customers.

in-house menus Based on the design of the existing menu covers, and taken into con-sideration their in-house printing capabilities, this new layout design incorporates their style, and can be easily updated and printed frequently. The information structure allows for quick and easy identification, and the contrast is suitable to the interior lighting of the restaurant. And the typog-raphy in the drinks and dessert menu mimic the treatment of type in the logo.

The following projects are an accumulation of freelance work that I produced in the last two years for various companies.

The two companies below are energy and oil companies that hired me to create identities which reflect their field of work and convey their image. Working with companies in this field allowed me to understand how to convey the importance of design as well as the process and outcome of its application.

pharos oil FEB. 2007 The name ‘Pharos’ was derived from the name of the old-est lighthouse located in Egypt, directly relating to ‘discovery’. This new Egyptian company was looking for an identity that captured the authenticity of their name, while relating to the oil & gas field. The “H” not only stands as a flamed torch that resembles a lighthouse, but it is also a drill pipe joint connected to another joint in the “I” below. The connection between the “I” in oil and the “H” in PHAROS is a connection in a typical drill pipe joint.

eai APR. 2006 Energy Allied International is an international project development firm that identifies and develops large scale, energy-related infrastructure projects. Their role is to interconnect different aspects of a project through alliance resources and com-munication with local governments to see the project to fruition. The interconnected ‘oil drop’ symbols reflect this synergy.

The projects shown here are for a construction company (TRG) and an architecture firm (IDG). In the process of creating these identities, I was also challenged to create templates for them to work from in Microsoft Word. In addition, I developed an information structure and content outline for their individual websites. For IDG, I refined their written mission statement and wrote most of the content for their website. I am currently their Design Representative, working with the website development company, and will design their company brochure once the website concept is completed.

idg Interactive Design Group is an architectural design company specializing in architecture, interior design and energy analysis. The mission is to integrate their client’s dreams and needs with IDG’s cutting-edge design and environ-mental technology to deliver the ideal architectural space that is unique to each client. Therefore, I designed three symbols that represent each aspect of this firm’s body of work (all stemming from the ‘architecture square’), and combin-ing them as a gradient to create a sense of ‘cutting-edge’ space.

trg The Richmond Group is a construction and architecture company that brings together different entities of various expertise in order to deliver a successful project. The lines represents the different entities, matched with TRG’s expertise to create a cutting-edge result.

Taba Heights is a resort destination, located in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt. They hired me to create a partner logo, a poster to advertise their camel rides, and a newsletter template. All work was successfully done off-location, through strong communication.

Red Sesame is a company that provides cooking lessons and private catering. They needed a literal logo and identity system that incorporates different aspects of their services. Along with the versatile identity, advertisements and recipe templates were created.

red sesame The logo is subtly literal, incorporating a sesame seed as the negative space in the vowels of the name. It’s composition is versatile to the different aspects of the companies services and design needs.

taba heights The logo above was designed as partner division logo for their ‘Green Team’, a recycling department, that incorporated their existing logo. The newsletter was created in Microsoft Word as a template for them to update future newsletters sustainably.

My motto as a photographer is that it’s not what you take a photo of, it’s the angle you takeit at that will allow people to view the ordinary as extraordinary. Most of these photographs were sold in Boston, MA in venues such as Starbucks®, Massachu-setts College of Art Bi-annual Art Sale, Boston Public Library Silent Auction, and on Newbury Street. Photographs below were taken in the USA, Indonesia, Mozambique, or Egypt. Formats include 35mm, medium format, and large format (sheet film). Black and white pictures were developed manually, and all photographs were printed manually in both color and black & white darkrooms.
