Under the auspices of Kannada Balaga U.K,

a musical salutations and tribute to the

Saints Purandara, Basavanna and Akkamaha

Devi were performed that stole the hearts of

Kannada Art Lovers. On 10th July 2010 the musical salutations to Saint Purandara

performed at the central Studios of Queen

Mary College in Basingstoke was a

marvellous experience that remain in our

memories for a long time. Mrs. Seetha

Ramamurthy and Mr. Ramamurthy who

have been successfully organising this

performance for the past 10 years, are well

known to the art lovers of Basingstoke.

It is a proud fact that for the past

one year this performance is conducted under the auspicious of Kannada Balaga

U.K.

At this years performance, our

local upcoming and budding artistes Dr.

Ramya Mohan and Smt. Shruthi Sudhir

gave music recital and filled our hearts with

joy. The accompanying artistes Dr. Jyotsna

Srikanth and Mr. R. N. Prakash gave this

performance an additional brilliance. The

programme started with an introduction of

artists by Dr. Uma Venkatesh and Mr.

Ramamurthy.

Dr. Ramya Mohan and Smt. Shruthi Sudhir rendered the ‘Devara Namas’

of Purandara in choice ragas that floated the

audience on a musical wave that made every

one filled with emotion. Dr. Jyotsna

Shrkanth gave a performance through the

strings of her violin the rendition of

‘Jagadoddaarana aadisidaleshoda’ that

succeeded in making the melody stay in our

emotion. Smt. Shruthi Sudhir not only sang

Devara Namas, but also sang Vachanas of

Basavanna and Akka Mahadevi that made

us unaware of the time like a magic. Mr. Bangalore R N Prakash revealed his

excellent percussion skills.

After the musical performances, Dr.

Balasubramanyam who had come from

Bangalore, introduced the charitable work

done by his organisation regarding the

uplifting of the tribal people of Karnataka.

He also suggested the ways in which the

Non Resident Indians can cooperate and

help the uplifting of these tribal people.

After a snack of tasty ‘Puliogare’ prepared by Smt. Seetha Ramamurthy, and enjoying a

comedy film ‘Crazy Kutumba’. We all

reached back safely to our respective places.

On the whole there is no doubt that this

experience will remain evergreen in our

memories for a long time.

We hope that Kannada Balaga U.K

will organise more of such musical and

cultural programmes in the future.

With best wishes,

Dr. Uma Venkatesh

question asked embracing the happy

moments along with sadness. She has most

distinguished degree, which is recognised

by all the universities. She wears precious

locket engraved with special letters, also

you find great flavours in her recipes. She

holds a gift of love and selflessness that has

got top most value. Are you finding your

answer? WHO IS SHE?

One more clue: answer of the title has great

meaning in the whole world.

From above underlined words and facts

please mix & match to get the meaning in

The annual KB Golf day was held success-

fully at Sherdley Park Golf Course,

St.Helen’s on 4.9.10.

The Golf competition was organised by Dr.G Jayram but was unable to attend due to

unavoidable circumstances. However, in his

absence, Dr.N.Jayaram made sure that all

efforts made hitherto were put into fruition.

On the day, there were 14 participants and

the competition kicked off at 12.30pm.

Packed lunch was distributed to all partici-

pants. There were 4 groups with players of

all abilities including a lone lady golfer in

our ex president Dr.K.S.Bhanumathi who

put the men to shame with certain exquisite shots. It was an excellent course with lot of

challenges and all groups finally finished at

around 7pm with some golfers feeling a bit

lighter having lost some balls!!

Dr.Jayaram and Dr.Kori were responsible

for calculation of scores and the results were

as follows:

1st prize – Dr. Ashok

Ullagaddi

2nd prize – Mr. Colin

Mc Voy

3rd prize – Dr. Ra-jashekar Kori

This is the second time Dr. Ullagaddi is

winning the competition as he also won the

opening competition last year. A trophy was

presented and it was decided that it would

be a rolling trophy next year onwards. Not

only prizes were distributed to the winners

but also very thought out mementos were

given to all participants. Mr. Ramamurthy

later requested the president and executive committee to ratify the formation of a for-

mal KB Golf society to be under the aegis of

the main KB banner. All present agreed that

this was a good idea as more golf events

could be organised. It was proposed that the

following to be office bearers of the soci-

ety : Dr. Rajashekar Kori – President,

Dr.G.Jayaram and Mr. Tony Stingemore –

Joint secretaries.

The day ended with dinner at the club-

house. The president, office bearers and the

executive committee of the KB would like to thank Dr.G.Jayaram, Dr.N.Jayaram and

others involved in the organisation of this

event for yet another flawless and success-

ful KB golf competition.

Report by. Rajaram Cavale

On the week end 24th and 25th April 2010, the youth wing

of Kannada Balaga U.K celebrated very successfully and elegantly

the Indian N e w Ye a r ’ s d a y Ugadi and theYouth Festival.The

special point about this was that the whole event was totally

managed and conducted by the second generation of Kannadigas

living in the United Kingdom. The whole festival had a flavour of Karnataka, the chief

guest was a Kannadiga, the food was of Udupi style catered by a

Udupi restaurant ‘Shivalli’ from Leicester, there was fragrance of

Mysore agarabatthi everywhere and most of all we could hear the

dialect of Kannada everywhere. The programme started with

Ganapathi puja conducted in a very traditional way. Then the chief

guest Mr. C.Gururaja Rao was welcomed on to the stage. Among

the chief guest were seated the President Dr. Bhanumathi, the

secretary Dr. Anand Nadiger, the treasurer Mrs. Surenu Jayaram

and Vice President Miss. Mrinalini Puranik. President Bhanumathi

cordially welcomed the chief guest Mr. C. Gururaja Rao and introduced him to the audience. She said our chief guest is a total

Kannadiga and this is the first time in the U.K that a Kannadiga

has been appointed as a Consulate General of India and it is our

fortune and pleasure to have him among us in this country. Mr.

Gururaja Rao has been appointed as the consular general at the

High Commission of India in Birmingham. He served in Indian

Missions in Mauritius, Kenya, Portugal and Nepal in different

capacities. Dr. Bhanumathi explained to the chief guest about

Kannada Balaga U.K and said it has already celebrated its Silver

Jubilee in the year 2008. Dr. Bhanumathi asked the chief guest to

explain briefly about the recent changes in the rulings by India

Government about applying for the ‘Overseas Citizen of India’ as

there was confusion about the new rules. In reply Mr. C. Gururaja

Rao started his speech in Kannada with a quote from the poem

‘Yugadi’ by Da. Ra. Bendre the famous Kannada poet. This cause

cheers and loud applause from the audience. He explained that

Govt of India has modified the rules regarding Overseas

Citizenship of India. He said Government of India does allow Indian citizens to have an Overseas Citizenship of India if the

countries of their acquired citizenship allow duel citizenship.

Therefore the citizens who have acquired foreign nationalities

should surrender their old Indian passports to Indian authorities

before they apply for PIO (Person of Indian Origin) or OCI

(Overseas Citizenship of India) and they must produce a

certificate of surrendering their passport when they apply for PIO

or OCI. There is a fee of £90 to pay for this certificate. He

suggested that full and detailed information is available at the

website of Consulate General of India at http://

www.cgibirmingham.org/mainindx.html . After facilitating the chief guest, cultural and

entertainment programmes started coming one after the other.

Some of the artists from Karnataka were not able to attend

because of changes in the Visa rules of U.K and Icelandic volcano

ash that affected the flights. Albeit there were plenty of local

Kannada artists from the U.K.

BOOK REVIEW

Title: Victoria Gowramma,

the Lost Princess of Coorg

Author: C. P. Belliappa

Publisher: Rupa & Co. Price: Rs. 295/- Book Review -P.T.Bopanna.

The book titled Victoria

Gowramma, the Lost Princess of Coorg

focuses on Chikka Veerarajendra, the exiled

Raja of Coorg, and his 11 – year - old

daughter Gowramma, who were the first

Indian royals to land in Britain in the

summer of 1852. Chikka Veerarajendra, the

last King of Kodagu, who was banished from

his land by the British in 1834, used the

pretext of his daughter embracing Christianity and acquiring a Western

education as a ruse to secure permission to

visit England.

Author Belliappa has proved his talent as a

storyteller to spin out yet another interesting

book on Coorg (Kodagu). His other books

are Tale of a Tiger’s Tail and other Yarns

from Coorg, and Nuggets from Coorg

History. In the process, Belliappa has

unearthed hitherto unpublished material that throws light on Veerarajendra and Princess

Victoria Gowramma’s life in England.

Though the story of the last Raja of Coorg

occurred more than 150 years ago, Belliappa

has managed to keep the flow of the story,

by deploying certain amount of dramatizing,

at the same time keeping intact the historical

facts and occurrences.

What is extraordinary is the fact that

Belliappa managed to gather so much

information. In the book, Chikka

Veerarajendra emerges as a tragic figure who lost his kingdom because of his lack of tact

in dealing with the British and his atrocities

against the Kodavas who were alienated to

the point of supporting the British in taking

over the administration of the kingdom.

The last Raja was initially taken to Vellore

in Tamil Nadu and subsequently banished to

Benares in 1836. The book deals with the

Kodagu royal family’s life in Benares and

the Raja’s remarkable journey to England in 1852 along with his 11 – year - old daughter

Gowramma. Book Review by courtesy of –
