    INSERTING AND CARVING THE AMALGAM

    Condensation

Adapt the amalgam to the preparation walls andmatrix.

    Produce arestoration free of voids

Lowers the mercury content in the restoration toimprove strength anddecrease corrosion.

    Procedure

    1. Choose a condenser that can be used withoutbinding.

    2. Fill the amalgam carrier the amount ofamalgam thatwill fill the preparation/ min.

    3. Use the condenser in apulpal orgingivaldirection.4. Do the lateral condensation5. In the proximal box condense mesially( distally) to

ensure proximal contact with the adjacent tooth

    6. C

ontinue the procedure of adding and condensingamalgamuntil half way the preparation depth.7. Change condenser until the preparation us entirely

filledup.8. When occlusalmargins are approaches exercise care

not to insure the enamelmargin.9. The occlusal margin should be covered and over

packedat least 1mm.10.Condensation should be complete within the

-when inserting amalgam into a large preparationbefore the oldmixture reaches its setting time make

a new mixture.- To allow proper condensation, the mix should be

    either wet ordry.

    Carving the occlusal Portion

    1. Burnish the occlusal portion, by moving theburnisher mesiodistally and faciolingually unit it

contacts with the enamel surfaces.2. Use an explorer or hollenback to carefully open or

define the occlusal embrasure:- This procedure will significantly reduce the

danger of marginal fracture during matrixremoval.

    3. Complete occlusal carving

    4. The matrix removes and access is grained to carve

    the axialportion of the restoration.

    - the amalgam knives hollenback carver or the side ofan

explorermay be used for carving these area.

5.Burnish the entire surface to rander it smooth.

    6. Pass a floss through proximal contact floss not only

remove amalgam shavings but also detects anyamalgam

    gingival over hang.

    7. If an overhang is detected further use amalgam

    knives.

8.Check it restoration is high with the use ofarticulating

    paper.

    9. Caution patient not to use the new restoration fo

biting or chewing fora few hours.

Two features of the occlusal relationship suggesting the

    restoration is high.

    1. Cusp tips of the adjacent teeth are in occlusal contact

    2. A cusp that occluded with.

    FinishingandPolishing the Amalgam

Necessary to correct amarginal discrepancy oimprove the contour.

Polishing an amalgam restoration is notattempted within 24 hours after insertion.

Polishingmay be accomplished with a fine grirubber polishing point or by a rubber cup withpumice followed bya high clusteragent.
