Inner City Outings (ICO) is a community outreach pro-gram of the Sierra Club dedicated to providing positiveexperiences in the wilderness to underserved youth. The
goal is to open the minds of youth, helping them to appreci-ate the wilderness and develop a desire to protect it. Visit usat http://sandiego.sierraclub.org/ico/
ICOs First Outing with YMCA/Roosevelt Middle School (Contributed by ICO VolunteerDebbie Tarczy)
The San Diego ICO group has recently collaborated with theYMCA's Youth and Family Services program. The YMCA part-ners with inner city schools and provides a variety of programs, including after-school programs and gang-prevention classes.
ICO Leader Paul Kater led our first hike with this
group on Saturday, June 15th. We met with a group of 10 stu-dents just graduating from the 9th grade at Roosevelt MiddleSchool, and enjoyed a hike up Stonewall Peak in the CuyamacaMountain area. The teens were enthusiastic and eager to hearabout what type of wildlife inhabit the area. They were hope-ful of catching a glimpse of deer grazing or other wildlife in thearea. The best of show, however, was a small group of wildturkeys!
The youth enjoyed the opportunity to jot notes in theregister at the top of the peak. Though everyone was tired atthe end, it was an enjoyable experience for all. And, the groupexpressed an enthusiastic interest in hiking again. We look for-ward to a continuing relationship with the YMCA.
Special thanks to Paul Kater for leading this hike and
to all the volunteers who assisted and attended.

ICO Leader SpotlightIn past issues youve read about ICO adventures on hiking trips,
but it is only because of the dedication of our volunteer leadersthat we can even offer these opportunities to youth. In this, andcoming issues of the Hi Sierran, we will introduce you to theleaders of San Diego Inner City Outings. This issues spotlight is
on ICO Leader Allan Fein. It is through his determination anddesire to offer environmental programs to youth in the inner citythat the San Diego ICO program began in December 2000. Allanis the current Chairperson for San Diego ICO.
In Allans own words, here are some reasons why hebecame a leader in the ICO program:
"While attending an ICO meeting in Portland Oregon in2000, two teenagers shared their experience while on an ICO out-ing. Their story told of an adventure at sea on a large sail ship.Their four-day trip around the San Juan Islands became a life-changing event for me. I decided in the moment that they weretelling their story, that I would be part of giving this gift to otherkids, that San Diego was going to have an ICO group. I love tosee peoples eyes when I show them something in nature that
they have never witnessed before. The next time you bring some-one to a beautiful place in the wilderness, take a moment andlook at the expression on their face, look at their eyes... "
"I love the outdoors and I love the wilderness and Iwant to give kids every opportunity to love and respect thewilderness too. Children like to investigate and learn, they like tosee new things and new places, they like to play and have fun,and so do I. We have a lot to teach each other (children andadults). Children bring fresh new thoughts and ideas, being withthem is fun and refreshing. "
You Too Can Help ICO!Outing Volunteers and Leaders Needed: Our next orientation will takeplace on Thursday, October 17 at 6:30pm at the Sierra Club office inNorth Park (3820 Ray Street San Diego, CA). Contact Brian Cohen formore information about the orientation and becoming a volunteer
[email protected] or at 619-222-4699.
Donations: ICO trips are provided at no cost to our youth participants. We are a 100% volunteer effort. However, we do have expenses. As anon-profit organization, San Diego ICO accepts both monetary andproduct donations. We are currently in need of equipment, such as,sleeping pads and sleeping bag liners. For interest in donating to ICO,please contact Allan Fein at [email protected] or at 858-679-7920.
To preserve and protect the wilderness for future generations, it is vital that theenvironmental community engage people of wide-ranging ethnicities, cultures, and abilities. The Sierra Club, through the Inner City Outings program, hopesto infuse the environmental community with the power of diversity.
