Dear Friends,

Greetings from South Africa. Here is the news from our part of the world toyour part of the world.

TEE (Hieological Education by Extension) Classes going exceptionally well—Inow have 4 TEE Centers in which I am training church leaders, Klerksdorp andKrugersdorp centers are African churches about 100 miles apart. I have 25students in these two locations. The students at Klerksdorp have completedtheir first 10 weeks course on "Bringing People to )esus" and have now startedthe second 10-week course on "Talking with God" (prayer). Krugersdorp isstarting Its first 10-week course which Isalso the course on "Talking with God."

Eldorado Park Isa coloured (Mulatto) church where Bro. Polard Joseph is theminister. They have finished their first 10-week course on "Bringing People toJesus" and have now begun their second 10-week course—"New TestamentSurvey."

SISHEN YOUNG BOYS

My newest TEE group will be starting in the very near future of ALETHEIA 4^CHRISTIAN LEARNING CENTER. Fellow missionaries Stuart and Marilyn,Cookare in the process of establishing this training center for European CHfUHanslflthe city of Johannesburg. Stuart has asked me to help out in developing TEE andPI (Programmed Instruction) courses for the center. I will be developing andteaching a PI course on the book of Acts for the European students atALETHEIA.

Kevin Passes to Std. 8 (10th grade U.S. Equivalent)In our last letter we told you of our children's difficulties due to difference in

S.A. and U.S. school systems. When we received the news that Kevin had failedStd. 7 we really did not know what we should do. Fellow missionaries advised

to return to the states for the sake of our children's education. We decided to

see if Kevin could be passed on probation to the next year and so we went tosee the high school principal. His answer was "NO" but he was very sympathetic as he understood the problems involved in changing from the U.S. tothe S.A. school system. Our interview with the principal lasted two hours during which time he reluctantly agreed to give Kevin a chance to see if he coulddo the work required in the advanced year.

At this writing Kevin has been in the new term three weeks and seems to bedoing well. We were very happy when he scored a 91% grade this week in hisfirst science text which put him fourth highest in a class of 30 students. Yet this isonly one subject of six and we must wait and see how he will do in his othersubjects.

Cheryl is also doing very well in her high school correspondence coursesfrom the University of Nebraska. She received her firstexam paper in History inwhich she got an "A." In her weekly work she received a "B" grade for the firstunit of history.

Linda started her first year of school on her birthday January 7. She was sixyears old. She loves school and is learning to read about Dick and jane and theball and the cat. She likes to go to bed very early as she doesn't want to missschool the next day.

Darin, now four, is not old enough for school but collects bugs in the backyard for his playmates which he names and then brings in the house to showeveryone.

Still Painting—By the time you receive this I hope to have the airplane painted. Our weather here has really made It difficult to complete this work. We haveNO hangar and winds and rain have made It Impossible to finish this paintingspeedily. We are keenly aware of the weather now and take every opportunityof suitable weather to paint when we can. Painting an airplane sounds simple. Ican assure you It is not an easy task. I must get It done soon though as I havetrips scheduled for the airplane in February and March.

We hope you are all well. God bless you as you serve Christ. Thank you foryour many prayers and kind and generous support of our work for Christ hereIn South Africa.

AFRICAN MISSION EVANGELISM

Rioting in South Africa

August, 1976

Rioting in the Africantownships has resulted in approximately 175 killed and 1300injured. Derry has had to cancelhis TEE classes because of theunrest. Riots have occurred inall of the areas in which he hasclasses. He was to conduct aclass in Kagiso the night riotingstarted there but fortunatelywas not in the township havingdecided it may not be safe afterthe disturbances in Soweto. Thefollowing week BrotherTsatseng called to say riotinghad started in Klerksdorp and Itwould not be safe to meet for Two small grand-daughters of the Zulu chief.

class. During the weekend of the Soweto riots it was necessary for Derry, Cheryl, and Kevin to remain overnight in Johannesburg since violence was occurring on the main road betweenJohannesburg and Carletonville. They were in Johannesburg to attend a rally for the churches.Permits for whites to enter the African townships have been withdrawn and Derry will need toapply for a new permit before he can resume classes. This week four schools were damaged, achurch, beerhall, and buses were set on fire in the Khutsong township in Carletonville. This isabout five miles from our house. All of the rioting has been confined to the African townshipsand we are not in any danger as long as we stay out of those areas. Rioting is still erupting hereand there but not with the violence of Soweto. African schoolsare reopening and we trust that allwill soon be back to Normal.

CRAICHALL PARK CHURCH

The European (white) church at Craighall Park, Johannesburg has been through a year and ahalf of turmoil caused by the misuse of funds by its South African minister. This has resulted In thechurch losing $18,000 and being sued in the Supreme Court for a further $15,000, members leaving the church, and division in the church over a disfellowship of a man objecting to the minister

—continued on inside

retaining his position, it has been into thissituation that Derry was asked to serve asminister. Other commitments, financing, andKevin's school problems have prevented usfrom moving to Johannesburg, but Derryagreed to serve as Interim Evangeiist in orderto assist them and provide leadership fhroughthese difficulties. Derry attended the SupremeCourt hearing six weeks ago and we are nowawaiting the decision of the Magistrate. It hasalso been necessary to review the disfellowshipcase and try to resolve some of the problemsresulting from this action. The church iswithout any experienced leadership since allthe Christians are babes in Christ. For thisreason Derry has set up an in-trainingJeadership program and has drawn upguidelines for the administration of thechurch. A shepherding program is beingorganized with male members of the congregation sharing in this program. The churchrequested Derry to "set the church in order"and this has involved much teaching and explaining in order to organize the church Into afunctional body of believers. It is difficult toget this ail done when we live some 50 milesaway but in spite of all of the problems thespirit has improved and the people are willingto learn. We would ask for your prayers for thiscongregation, for these babes in Christ. Praywith us that the decision of the court will not

be against them; if it is they will most likelyhave to sell their building. Pray too for us thatwe will have the wisdom needed to solve theseproblems.

TEE PROGRAM RESULTS

At our last annual minister's week I distributed copies of a PI book on pastoralleadership entitled "The Shepherd and HisWork." Many of our African ministers here inSouth Africa are too far distant for me to visitthem on a weekly basis so we try to assist themwith materials that will help them in theirrespective local ministries. I gave the abovementioned book to 13 different Africanpastorsmore or less on an experimental basis to seewhat they would do with it left on their own.(In the Transvaal area where we live, we gothrough these books on a weekly basis withweekly visits with the pastors of this area). Thefollowing letter shows in one case that the experiment was highly successful. I am hopeful

—continued on back page.

that this PI book will bring more good resultsamong the other pastors as well and hope toreceive more letters like the following:Dear Bro. Smaage,
