A Rule of Life
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Fr. Zachary of the Mother of God, SOLT offers a beautiful reflection on the five important “rules” that
can be a part of our lives every day of our life. I think they are solid rules that can help us all to become
better disciples of Our Lord Jesus.
#1 The first rule begins when we rise from bed. First thing in the morning say: "This is the first and
greatest of all the commandments, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your
soul, and with your whole mind, and with all your strength’ and the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Next, say the morning offering: "O Jesus, in union with your Most Precious Blood poured out on the cross and offered in every Mass, I
offer you today my prayers, works, joys, sorrows and sufferings for the praise of Your Holy Name and all the desires of Your Sacred
Heart; in reparation for sin, for the conversion of sinners, the union of all Christians and our final union with You in heaven."
#2 Pray unceasingly. Throughout the day practice the constant quiet repetition of a Jesus prayer or prayers. They are like arrows
aimed at the heart of Jesus. "Jesus, I love you, possess me." "Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner."
"Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust In Thee." "Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine." "Jesus, Mary,
Joseph, I love you. Save Souls." "Heart of Jesus burning with love for me, inflame my heart with love for Thee." "O my Jesus, forgive
us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in need of Thy mercy." "Eternal Father, I offer You
the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the
whole world." "For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
The Act of Contrition: "O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins, because of Thy just
punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with
the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin."
The Hail Holy Queen: "Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor
banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious
advocate, Thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O Clement, O
Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary!
#3 Every Wednesday, fast completely from watching television; read one chapter of either Matthew, Mark, Luke or John on that Fast
Wednesday and preferably every day.
#4 Almsgiving: Give directly to a charity or give through the Church. Check that the organization you donate to, truly upholds respect
for human life - from conception to natural death.
#5 Once a week, besides Holy Mass, go on a pilgrimage. Visit the adoration chapel, reminding yourself that you are on pilgrimage to
the Holy Land of Heaven.
May our Patroness, most powerful St. Bernadette obtain for each of us the grace to one day meet God face to face and may Our Lady
be our solace and guide in every endeavor, joy, and trial! And may the Holy Eucharist be our wisdom and strength!
God Bless,
Fr. Don Kline, V.F.

GOSPEL REFLECTION
What can work and
wages, welfare and the
unemployed tell us about
the kingdom of God? In
the parable of the
laborers in the vineyard
we see the extraordinary
generosity and
compassion of God
(Matthew 20:1-16).
There is great tragedy in unemployment, the loss of work,
and the inability to earn enough to live and support oneself or
one's family. In Jesus' times laborers had to wait each day in
the marketplace until someone hired them for a day's job. No
work that day usually meant no food on the family table. The
laborers who worked all day and received their payment
complain that the master pays the late afternoon laborers the
same wage. The master, undoubtedly, hired them in the late
afternoon so they wouldn't go home payless and hungry.
God is generous and gives us work for his kingdom
God is generous in opening the doors of his kingdom to all
who will enter, both those who have labored a life-time for
him and those who come at the last hour. While the reward is
the same, the motive for one's labor can make all the
difference. Some work only for reward. They will only put in
as much effort as they think they will get back. Others labor
out of love and joy for the opportunity to work and to serve
others. The Lord Jesus calls each one of us to serve God
and his kingdom with joy and zeal and to serve our neighbor
with a generous spirit as well.
Empowered to serve with a joyful and generous spirit
The Lord Jesus wants to fill each one of us with the power
and strength of the Holy Spirit so we can bear great fruit for
God's kingdom (the fruit of peace, joy, righteousness, and
love) and also bring the fruit of his kingdom to our neighbor
as well. We labor for the Lord to bring him praise, honor, and
glory. And we labor for our neighbor for their welfare with the
same spirit of loving-kindness and compassion which the
Lord has shown to us.
Paul the Apostle reminds us, "Whatever your task, work
heartily, as serving the Lord and not others, knowing that
from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward
- you are serving the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:23-24). Do
you perform your daily tasks and responsibilities with
cheerfulness and diligence for the Lord's sake? And do you
give generously to others, especially to those in need of your
care and support?

Something to Think About
Are you prepared for an emergency situation? Have
you recently reviewed Arizona’s statute concerning
who would be making medical decisions on your
behalf if you are unable to do so and you do not
have a power of attorney on file. (POA)?
Remember the best thing one can do is to appoint a
medical power of attorney (POA) and have a back
up POA to make decisions for you if you become
unable to make decisions for yourself. Otherwise,
someone who may not know you or have the same
values, and beliefs may be making those decisions.
According to Arizona law:
“If an adult patient is unable to make or communi-
cate health care treatment decisions, a health care
provider shall make a reasonable effort to locate
and shall follow a health care directive. A health
care provider shall also make a reasonable effort to
consult with a surrogate. If the patient has a health
care power of attorney that meets the requirements
of section 36-3221, the patient's designated agent
shall act as the patient's surrogate. However, if the
court appoints a guardian for the express purpose of
making health care treatment decisions, that guardi-
an shall act as the patient's surrogate. “
If neither of these situations applies, the healthcare
provider will make reasonable efforts to contact
family members or a close friend of the patient.
If the healthcare provider cannot locate a family
member or close friend, “the patient's attending phy-
sician may make health care treatment decisions for
the patient after the physician consults with and ob-
tains the recommendations of an institutional ethics
committee.”

“O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul
thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.” —Psalm 63:1
Thirsting for God?
Do you know an adult that is not baptized or that is baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition,
who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?
Do you know someone who is already Catholic, but has not yet received Confirmation and
Communion? They may be thirsting too!
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek
understanding. Attend weekly sessions with no obligation.
Weekly themes include the history and structure of the Church, understanding of the Bible and
sacred tradition, the sacraments and their meaning, the mass, end times, Church Fathers, saints
and the Virgin Mary.

Prayer Group Meets at Planned Parenthood
It started with a small group of teens who are passionate
about praying for the protection of the unborn. They
began meeting every Sunday afternoon to pray outside of
a local Planned Parenthood clinic. When word got out,
their families and others were inspired to join them. Now
they are extending an invitation to you. All are welcome.

Pray to Open Your Hearts to Life!
Heavenly Father, the beauty and dignity
of human life was the crowning of your
creation. You further ennobled that life
when your Son became one with us in his
incarnation. Help us to realize the
sacredness of human life and to respect
it from the moment of conception until
the last moment at death. Give us
courage to speak with truth and love and
with conviction in defense of life. Help us
to extend the gentle hand of mercy
and forgiveness to those who do not
reverence your gift of life. To all, grant
pardon for the times we have failed to
be grateful for your precious gift of life
or to respect it in others. We ask this in
Jesus' Name. Amen.

MASS INTENTIONS
FOR THE WEEK
“Be Not Afraid, I Go Before You Always.”
As a family, or as an individual, simply pray these intentions
before praying the daily Rosary. The Rosary is prayed every
day of the Novena.
Please pray for the following intentions:
1. For the conversion and spiritual protection of our nation,
currently experiencing a calamity of sin, division, and
vitriol.
2. For authentic leadership, secular and in the Church, rooted
in true virtue.
3. For the political parties of our nation to be led by the com-
mon good, and to agree on the fundamentals of any nation
with a future: protection of human life at all stages, recog-
nition of the dignity of every human person precisely be-
cause he or she is made in the image of God, upholding of
marriage as the fundamental building block of society, and
protection of free speech, freedom of religion, and all oth-
er attendant freedoms which help build a virtuous and
generous citizenry.
4. For the rejection of all forms of collectivism (CCC 1885),
whether Marxist or born of another false ideology, and the
cultivation of true patriotism, based on love for what is
best in our country, solidarity with those in need and sub-
sidiarity for those smaller stations of governance such as
the family.
5. For the strengthening of all families, in particular that
Catholic families live more deeply their call to be the
“domestic church”.
6. For the virtues of mercy and forgiveness to be demonstrat-
ed by our leaders and especially those who pray the Our
Father.
7. For an end to unjust discrimination and the healing of ra-
cial divisions and all other divisiveness unworthy of a
sovereign nation.
8. For the vulnerable among us, especially pre-born children,
elderly, immigrants, unemployed and the poor.
9. For the restoration of one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

Prayer for Catechists
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of faith-filled catechists to be heralds of the
Gospel to our children, our youth, our teens, and our adults.
We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their work, their hopes and
their dreams.
May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and
challenges, is compassionate and consoling.
We pray that we will always be blessed with those who respond to the call to share in Christ’s prophetic
mission as catechists. May we be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all
disciples, contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church.
We ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
