Winter is here. Or is it really? This winter started without snow and with fairly enjoyable weather right up to December. The season has announced itself to be as hot as our cover picture! That’s right, the Rugby calendar has got competi-tion as for this issue of the Student Voice, our team literally uncovered itself to wish you a Merry Naughty Christmas.

Ten days to go and it will be presents-time! What was on your wish list this year? A hot Lamborghini? A new tie? A girl’s phone number or just love from your friends and family? Well, we wished for some more creative, funny and entertaining columnists to add to our existing ones, so that together we can make YOUR newspaper worth your time.

This issue is dedicated to the Christmas holidays and the coming New Year. You will discover Switzerland’s winter party places (yes, this country is not as bor-ing as it may occasionally seem) in contrast to the hot, hot parties Singapore has to offer for Christmas and New Year’s. You will also find out what will really happen on December 21st 2012 and why you will not respect the resolutions you will set for next year. Also featured in this issue is an exclusive article by the LikeEat Committee, whose targets for their most recent tasting were the different nationalities at Fête Universelle!

Ah yes, the Student Council’s Fête Universelle (not to be confused with Fête Finale), a display of true EHL spirit, was one of the highlights since school started. Other party opportunities were brought to us by the actual Fête Finale, who took us around the world in just three months. The good old BSC3s are back from real life - the boys with their hair pulled back reminding us of John Travolta in Grease. And the BSC3 girls, they are certainly setting the fashion bar high with their hot styles.

Our conclusion: With all this hotness going around, winter certainly does not stand a chance. And if the cold, snow and ice manage to reach us in the end, do not fret. Get a mulled wine, wrap up in a hot blanket (preferably not alone) or get crazy at the après-ski bar. Wherever you will be during these holidays, we are sure there are many ways to make Christmas and this winter a hot one!

We wish you a Merry Naughty Christmas and see you in 2012!

Café des StagiairesThe “Café des Stagiaires”, literally the “Intern’s coffee shop”, is a small coffee/bar in the heart of Shanghai created by interns for interns (from EHL of course!). There you will find a large choice of beer (including the draft Chouffe for all beer lovers), a good French wine menu, cheese and ham plates, farmhouse pâté or even foie gras and Spanish jamón! Buoyant and convivial, it should not to be missed for an after-work drink or rendezvous! For more info, search for “Café des Stagiaires Shanghai” on Google or wait for the next Student Voice!

TrendsFeuerzangenbowleIf you happen to pass by a German Christmas market in the next few days, be sure to look for and try a Feuerzangenbowle. It’s a slight devia-tion from your standard mulled wine – basi-cally a rum-soaked sugarloaf is set on fire and the syrup drops into the mulled wine. It be-comes quite sweet but since it has double the amount of alcohol in it, it will quickly warm you up while you’re standing outside in the cold. Warning: since it contains a lot of sugar, it could quickly get to your head.

Dear All,

The last golden leaves, taken away by the fierce cold wind, are announcing the swift coming of the cold Swiss winter, and even more importantly, the long-expected and well-deserved Christmas holidays. Some of us will spend this time far away, visiting friends and family or simply relaxing on some unknown beach whilst sipping exotic cocktails. At the same time, some poor souls will be enslaved on their internships. However, for those who will be staying in Switzerland and who are looking for challenges, new experiences and a good deal of fun, here are a couple of ideas on how you could make your holidays memorable: By practicing what has long been considered as Switzerland’s trademark -SKIING!

Gstaad

For those who are ignorant of the fine art of skiing, here is your chance to explore it! In Gstaad you will find gentle slopes and patient trainers (who will watch you with a loving eye as you tumble down the slope, knocking out a few children, and tell you that you are extremely gifted). But most importantly, Gstaad is known for its ambient luxury: Louis Vuitton, Breguet and Chopard are ready to welcome the exhausted skier with open arms. What’s more, those who are particularly exigent in matters of accommodation can find their ultimate dreams come true at the luxurious GSTAAD PALACE, one of Switzerland’s most exquisite hotels.

Crans

Situated in the canton of Valais, this resort is attractive both because of its 140 km of slopes and its HOT après-ski (in fact, most consider the latter as reason enough to go there). Possibly as a fortunate guest of the Hotel Royal, decorated in an elegant mountain style and offering a beautiful view of the Alps, you will eat with pleasure at the Caviar House & Prunier. You can also discover the exquisite ‘’La Marmotte’’ beer brewed directly in the Brasserie La Marmotte, chill at the Monk’s Bar and end up in the Pacha Club for the rest of the night (which you will eventually leave to reclaim your bed, alone or not, to start all over again the next day!)

Zermatt

If you still haven’t found what you were looking for, here is your last chance! Zermatt is

as renowned for its slopes (with views of the famous Matterhorn) as well as for its WILD night life. After

skiing the whole day (if hangover allows), you’ll dive head first into the crazy party ambiance (once again). No matter where you’re staying (hotel or renting a flat) or eating (the Spaghetti Factory just over the Broken club

is amazing), do NOT miss the fun at the Broken, the Papperla Schneewittchen (or the first bar/club you

encounter), for white nights, (very) interesting new acquaintances and an amazing stay! All in all, regardless of

where you’ll be or what you’ll be doing (if you don’t want to

ski, it’s not my problem, you’ll just be miserable for the rest of your

life!), I wish you all a Merry Naughty Christmas!

Verbier

Inexperienced skiers BEWARE: this is definitely not for you. Verbier is

not only the largest skiing area in the Swiss Alps, it is also one of the most prized destinations

for extreme skiing in the world. Forget the lovely blue and (God forbid!) green slopes: here the dominant color is BLACK! For extreme skiers not afraid of harsh conditions, the Cabane de Tortin, situated on one of the most vicious black slopes, offers accommodation of the following nature: no running water (no shower,

picturesque ‘’bathroom’’), electricity from an electric generator (lights out at 10:00 pm)

and heating, depending on your luck... Enjoy!

Unrestricted by the nature of its small size, Singapore has much to offer to visiting guests every Christmas and New Year’s! Without exception, in 2011 Singapore will provide even more options to discerning guests. Check out what’s available on this sunny little island for a warm Christmas!

Orchard road Christmas Light-upWell-known for its Christmas light-up on the famous shopping belt Orchard road, visitors and locals alike flock this place to embrace the festive atmosphere, and to indulge in the massive year-end sales! This year, themed as “Christmas blooms in Singapore”, flower lights will dress the long street, while shopping malls along the stretch will put on their best Christ-mas “make-up” and compete for the title of “Best Dressed Building”.

Marina Bay Christmas Light-upBesides the famous shopping boulevard, the up-and-coming place to be at over Christmas is the Marina Bay area. Set against the back-drop of the latest face in the hotel industry, the Marina Bay Sands Singapore, this waterfront region provides visitors a sensory Christmas to celebrate the year of 2011! Various art, light and musical installations surround the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Locals and foreigners can come here to enjoy the free choirs and musical per-formances for more than a month-long period!

New Year’s ResolutionsIt’s once again time for that useless task

Of drafting new year’s resolutions that won’t last:I could resolve to get my act together

Be more serious and study better.

I could resolve to sit in front of classAnd pretend to be a real smart-ass.

I could resolve to facebook lessBe more professional in how I dress.

I could resolve to stop pretendingI’m important when just bbming.

I could resolve to not procrastinateOr help EHL to better communicate.

I could resolve to come up with better excusesAs to why I’m late and morning-useless.I could resolve to stop watching GLEE

Or be like Anna and scare Aps.

I could resolve to be like Rishav VermaSave the dolphins, eat less tuna.

I could resolve to read all documents on moodleAnd be like Ian-without-hair-products: a poodle.

I could resolve to be like Maggie ChenOh, what a Genius I’d be then!

I could resolve to be more like youBut I’m quite happy being Hallalulu.

I could resolve to stop making resolutionsOr come up with better lost-and-found solutions.

Or I could simply resolve to stop resolvingA resolution probably well-worth holding.

The end of the world… Again?!On the 21.12.2011, we start THE countdown to the end of the world. Are you plagued by superstitious fears or ca-lendar expiries? Please, your cause for alarm is based on rumours and ‘internet gossip’ only.

This is how it all began: A lonely planet named Nibiru, 2-3 times the size of Earth, seemingly invisible (it is too faint to see with all but very few powerful telescopes), threatens to collide with the Earth. This myth is based on the imagination of a science-fiction author, who wrote about a civilization known as the Sumerians. Ac-cording to him, the Sumerians feared that Nibiru would collide with Earth. Howe-ver, historians know that this fear was un-founded, since the Sumerians’ interests lay not in astronomy but in agricultural deve-lopment.

Nibiru was soon referred to as Planet X. This is the way astronomers refer to suspi-cious objects, which then receive a name like Pluto or the dwarf planet Eris, once they’ve been identified. So Nibiru, Pla-net X or Eris, was supposed to crash into the earth in 2003. It never happened. All conspiracy theorists realized they had miscalculated – it was actually 21.12.2012 at the time when the Mayan calendar ends. Convenient, don’t you think? Come 21.12.2012 they will be re-calculating the

by Alex Just

date of Armageddon because nothing happened… again.

The Mayans, who are one of the oldest civilizations on our planet, are renowned for their skills in making calendars. You see, their calendar ends on the 21.12.2012, which has caused everyone to jump around in fear and panic. Put it this way, do we panic when at the end of our year the calendar is finished? No, we go and buy another one. The problem with the Mayans was that they died before they could produce a calendar for the following cycle. Also to be noted, this sophisticated race believed the sun to be a God fuelled by blood sacrifices and was under the in-fluence of potent hallucinogenic plants whilst prophesying. Basically the Mayan calendar manufacturers kicked the bucket and now there are no more calendars on the market. It was probably the drugs that killed them. End of the world? Or is it just clever conspiracy theorists trying to create demand for a niche?

Another theory: Polar shift caused by strange planetary alignments? Oh sorry, that was Hollywood. Actually every De-cember the Earth and sun are aligned with the centre of the Milky Way in the constel-lation of Sagittarius. Why should it be any different this year? Because of an ‘invisible planet’ meandering into our inner solar

Page 13: SV 15 - MERRY NAUGHTY CHRISTMAS

13

Trends

system? Don’t be ridiculous. It’s the exact same concept with the polar shift. This ali-gnment happens every year, and for some reason people are expecting our magnetic poles to rotate, something which takes 400’000 years to happen. Last time I chec-ked, 400’000 is slightly more than the 24 hours on 21.12.2012; plus these 400’000 years aren’t due on 21.12.2012. The other scare is that due to this alignment we will be sucked into the super massive black hole 30’000 light years away in the middle of our galaxy… Our planet orbits the sun, so if we were to be ‘swallowed’ by a black hole, it would mean our sun would pack up its bags (namely all the planets) and catch the next breath of solar wind to des-tination super massive black hole. And all of this in the space of one year (30‘000 light years are about 283’821’914’177’424km and the sun is not able to travel at the speed of light). Do the math, that’s not going to happen.

The 2012 theories are one of the many doomsday predictions we’ve seen to scare people. If the end of the world does hap-pen, think about it this way: if we’re all going to die, why be scared? It’s not like you are going to be missing out, we’re all going out at once. In fact if you survived, life would be pretty shitty seeing as you would most probably be one of the only humans left. Talking to brick walls gets pretty boring after a while.

Christmas just wasn’t quite

the same

Typically, Christmas is all about getting together with friends and family, eating and drinking in a warm, cosy little hut, sheltered from the snow and cold out-side. However, just some years back, when he was still a teen, Damien Dellea, one of EHL’s faculty members, experienced Christmas in a slightly untypical way. (The story will be narrated from Damien Dellea’s perspective.)

I vividly remember the year when I was sixteen: instead of spending a traditional Swiss Christmas at home, my family was all geared up on a plane to Oran, Algeria. It would be the first time we would spend Christmas overseas, in a town called Beni Abbes. My father’s friend Mohamed had kindly invited our family to spend a week of Christmas with them.

I will never forget how freezing cold it was when we were in the bus from the airport. It was winter and there were holes in the floor of the bus. Although we were pre-pared for winter, we were definitely not ready to tackle the cold indoors. Finally, we arrived in Beni Abbes, and were pleas-

with Damien Dellea

by Jollene Jimmys

antly surprised by the organized slums people live in.

As guests, we were treated with utmost hospitality and respect; we were offered the best room to sleep in while Mohamed and his family squeezed themselves in a room with bare floors. As with any typi-cal Algerian family, he had many children and their so-called bedroom only had one piece of “furniture” in it, the carpet on the floor.

At dinner, men and guests were the only ones allowed at the dining table while women and children had to dine sepa-rately in the kitchen. That evening, we were treated to a sumptuous meal of lamb; it was only on special occasions that their family could expect meat on the table. However, I remembered not fancying the dish too much. Apart from the fact that it was lamb, which I am not a huge fan of, it was matured lamb meat: the smell was too strong for me. As I was seated near the kitchen, which was separated from the dining area only by curtains, I secretly passed the food behind my back to the kitchen. The children were elated! I be-

Page 15: SV 15 - MERRY NAUGHTY CHRISTMAS

15

Ehllieve the adults were too busy reminiscing to notice anything at that time.

What would Algeria be without sand? That was to be the main purpose of our entire trip. We realized the next day that we were bound for a week’s stay in the desert. It sounded exciting but slightly too thrilling for Christmas. With a tent and minimal belongings, we embarked on the journey. We used dromedaries as our form of transport while Muhamed’s family went on foot. How much more privileged could we be?

Being in the desert is no doubt an expe-rience of a lifetime, not to mention being there over Christmas. I will never for-get the clear skies at night with no lights around and only the stars blinking at you; that was pure celestial bliss. We pitched a tent big enough to fit 20 people, which was truly made of and smelt like raw leather, in the middle of nowhere. There, we set-tled down and started our week of indig-enous living. We first had to learn to bathe ourselves with less than what we normally drink in a day. The children were, howev-er, pleased not to shower at all.

Soon, December 25th came knocking on the door. Of course, no one should ever have to celebrate Christmas without a Christmas tree! Although it may seem like a huge effort to drag a tree all the way from Switzerland, up the plane, onto the bus, to the village and on the dromedary into the middle of the dessert, IT WAS ALL WORTH IT! On that memorable day, we celebrated Christmas in Swiss-African fusion style!

As we headed back to the village, another surprise awaited us. Gigantic fortress walls were being set up for a film set near the

village and camera crews were seen run-ning around. Bertolucci, a famous Italian film maker, was there to produce his new-est film “Un Thé au Sahara”! It was a real treat for us!

Good things never stopped happening to us; we witnessed yet another rare event – it rained! In the desert, it only rains once or twice every five to six years! Strangely, after the rain, children were running along the streets with X-ray films in their hands. All of them were heading to the sand dunes just behind the village. We should have guessed that they were going to sleigh down the dunes with the films as sleds! We were not left behind as my brother unpacked his skis, which he had painstak-ingly brought over from Switzerland. The children were so fascinated that we had to queue them up for a ski-run on the dunes.

How different can Christmas get???

What do you do for Christmas when you are in a roomful of MHA students from 19 different countries and territories? Well, we celebrate it in 19 different ways!

19 different ways of Christmas

by Sayaka Mori

Since we are in Switzerland, for us MHA stu-dents Christmas-time will start on December 6th this year, when people wear gigantic illumi-nated lanterns in the shape of a Bishop’s mitre on their heads. Spain will follow on the 8th with the feast of Immaculate Conception during which a nativity is set up in each house. In Italy, the festivities begin eight days before Christ-mas. They are known as Novena and last until the Feast of Epihany on January 6th.

Posada processions begin in Mexico on the 16th of December; performed by children, they re-enact the search for an Inn by Joseph and Mary. In Portugal the main event happens on Christ-mas Eve, when Pai Natal or Father Christmas visits all children, bearing gifts.

Korea celebrates Christmas through the shar-ing of Christmas cakes – delicious sponge cakes, covered with cream. Australia adds a historical touch to the food theme coming from the days of the Gold rush. Whoever finds the gold nug-get in the pudding will enjoy good luck!

In Norway they sing carols and eat porridge with a magic almond hidden in a bowl. The carp is the Christmas specialty in Slovakia. It is gutted, cooked and served for the Christmas meal.

In Argentina it is tradition to hang red and white garlands on the doors of houses to mark the festivities. In the U.S.A, small evergreen trees are displayed in every home. They are beautifully decorated with colored lights, tinsel,

angels, stars and bright ornaments. Christmas in France is marked by the burning of yule logs made out of cherry wood. In the Bahamas a great way to celebrate is by singing that great calypso carol “Great Day in Bethlehem”.

In China, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong for non-Christians, celebrations include going shopping and watching the Christmas lights in the city. In India, on the night of the 24th, families visit their local churches to attend the Midnight mass.

Last but not least, the Nova Scotia region of Canada has a very interesting tradition called the Taffy Pull. It involves making a candy called Saltwater Taffy.

You see, only in the MHA classroom one single celebration – the birth of Jesus – is celebrated in 19 different ways. It brings peace and hope to different nations, cultures, and ethnicities, and is celebrated in unique ways.

We are the 99%

Ever heard of the Occupy Wall Street Movement? In the past weeks, groups representing the mid-dle and working classes have gathered together in mass protest against the American upper class and the unfair distribution of wealth in the country. A number of people have taken this protest online and created a blog titled “We are the 99%”, where they publish confessions related to their troubles.

We have decided to bring this movement to EHL, representing the 99% of the elite student body. Here are some revelations of what the majority of us students experience on a day-to-day basis.

I am 21 years old.I spend any free time I have par-tying instead of working for extra money.I spend more time with my group than I do with my “real” friends.I am lazy, and I do leave my work to the last minute.I am the 99%.

by Karishma Rupani & Stephanie Dhima

I complain about early morning classes,

after having stayed up late the night

before for any reason other than school-

work.I buy coffee and Red Bulls from Main

bar all day, and then wonder where my

F&B money went.I constantly comment on the quality of

food served at school, but gun-to-my-

head, I couldn’t cook to save my life

(despite having gone through AP).

In an effort to break the monotony of

my days, I am inclined to rebel against

the dress code.I am the 99%.

I find more value in the job fairs and guest speakers than I do in my actual classes.I have given out more CVs and business cards than phone numbers to girls. We care more about how prospective em-ployers perceive us than what our own parents think of us.We put immense effort into our future despite knowing that after graduat-ing, all this hard work won’t pay off for years…We are the 99%.

BSC3 internship Flashbacks

Ehl

20

BSC3 internship FlashbacksAfter five long months, BSC3s are back from their internships. We have made a small com-pilation of their experiences, which may give you some inspirations for when you will next look for an internship.

Thomas was the Assistant to the Executive Vice-President of Operations at Servair’s head-quarters. For him, it was a great experience. Ev-ery day, he worked in a cross-cultural environ-ment – he had one pretty Mexican colleague on the left side of his desk and a charming Swiss one (AEHL) on the right!

Also at Servair, Anna worked as a Project Man-ager. Her mission was to update the concepts of two of their restaurants within a budget of €100 thousand and to optimize their profitabil-ity. Moreover she was asked to analyze a new fast food concept before its implementation and develop a business plan to diversify their activity.

Veronique spent five months at the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach. This internship in Mar-keting was all about creativity and patience. As they were only two employees in the depart-ment, she was involved in a variety of tasks, such as writing editorials, dealing with the PR agency, organizing photo-shoots and dealing with suppliers. She also designed artworks and created hotel collaterals. Sounds like fun? It surely was!

Adrian Ion

Also in Dubai, Christof was an intern at the Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts Area Office for Middle East and Asia. The job was great and so was experiencing Dubai. He was sent to audit 13 hotels in Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon and Jordan. The only down-sides: The Dubai weather from June to August and realizing that touching your face while swimming in the Dead Sea burns like hell. (By the way this internship is available again…)

Marguerite worked in the Finance department of the Mandarin Oriental in Paris. She started her internship 2 weeks before the opening, on June 28th. It was thrilling to work in a brand new hotel, with an amazing team spirit, which she had never experienced before. But the workload was huge, and even five months after the opening, many things still were not set up.

After working two months for a small and not very professional Event company in Amster-dam, the school agreed to let Margaux change her internship. She decided to stay in Amster-dam, as she was in love with the city and had already settled in. Within 2 weeks she found another internship at the Hilton Amsterdam as a Marketing Trainee. It was a great opportunity to work in a professional and international en-vironment.

Estelle was an intern at the London office of The Leading Hotels of the World Ltd. She suc-cessfully managed to learn and acquire invalu-able experiences, while being kept busy and being given plenty of responsibilities. She was in constant contact with LHW’s clients (i.e. member hotels but also travel agencies and end consumers) and the company’s headquarters, providing a unique insight on the inner works of our industry.

Page 21: SV 15 - MERRY NAUGHTY CHRISTMAS

Also in London, Marine was an intern at Ralph Lauren’s Head Marketing office for Europe. She worked in Retail Marketing for France & in Customer Relations Management. She had many responsibilities; from supporting the re-gional Marketing Manager in the development and the implementation of a Marketing plan for France, to translating and checking adver-tising texts.

Nicolas applied at the President Wilson Hotel (Geneva) in spring 2010. He was an F&B As-sistant Manager trainee. After an arrangement with the school, he worked there for one year, in the ten F&B outlets (bars, restaurants, ban-queting...). He finished in spring 2011, but as school would only start again in November, he renewed his contract as a Rooms Division Management trainee. After one month in this department, the F&B manager left the hotel. The GM then told him that due to his experi-ence, he was the only person who could take over the responsibilities of the former F&B manager until a new one was hired. He then became the F&B Manager, assisted by a recent EHL graduate.

Christopher’s tip to survive an administrative internship in Barcelona: it’s an easy week and on weekends – well, try not to get yourself killed during the famous bull run in Pamplona (true story). Barca is a “hub” for IT-hotel man-agement, out of which main actors in distribu-tion, as well as start-ups operate. He truly rec-ommends going there, since it provides good possibilities for work, and offers a great social experience.

In Shanghai, Thomas created the Shanghai Sta-giaire Crew. It is a group created by interns for interns. Made up of four businesses, it includes a French bakery, a neighborhood bar, a restau-rant/pizzeria and a real French butchery. The bakery and the bar have already opened and are a great hit! The other two businesses require a license, but by the time you read this, they should already be open, as well.

One kick-ass coach, 50 fighters, three disciplines and 1000 beads of sweat – that’s what the EHL Martial Arts committee is all about. Established in 2010 by a group of gentlemen who wanted to share their passion for boxing, Muay Thai and self-defence, our committee now boasts numerous members who go through boxing exercises within one hour and a half of intense and hard-core training each week. Push-ups, pull-ups, hooks, punches and low-kicks all belong to the standard training procedure every Thursday night in the gym. This not only builds up physical fitness, it also boosts confidence and arms you with the right techniques to immobilize your opponent if necessary! To give you a little insight as to how to best face your combatant in a fight, here are the most important points to keep in mind:

Use martial arts skills only when necessary Fighting is like chess, always think 4-5 steps ahead or just bring a chessboard along

to throw at your opponent Always guard your face to avoid a black eye on your beautiful face Size is misleading, even small guys can kick ass (especially your ass) If you do not have any experience in martial arts and your opponent is obviously

stronger than you, call your friends and hide until they arrive (if you can)Do not imitate fighting scenes from movies, you are not Chuck Norris Last advice for guys: If you kiss another girl in front of your girlfriend… any self-

defence is pointless, just run and pray she does not find youThe Martial Arts committee challenges you to sweat out all your stress, build up some muscles and to man-up! (Mind you, our strong female presence proves that women are just as tough and capable to become excellent fighters). And if you’re really hard-core, show what you’ve got during our upcoming self-defence all-day course planned in the near future, where you learn the neces-sary basics on how to neutralize your opponent with your own bare hands! For more information, follow our new Facebook page “EHL Martial Arts”. We’ll see you in class!

Ready? Ready? … Yeahby Nina Seppey

A new year, a new committee, a new logo, a new team, a new coach… but still the same EHL spirit and motivation since our committee’s inception in 2010 remains!

This year started off with the recruit-ment of new committee members, all 13 of us motivated to ensure you would be provided with entertaining sport-related events (showing Glion who does it better goes without saying). The first EHL-Gli-on game ended with a 10-10 try and, un-satisfied with this score, the boys proved that revenge is sweet with a 14-10 win on the 13th of November. A shout out to all supporters and cheerleaders for your in-credible support, and of course congrat-ulations to the Griffons! The first ever EHL mixed touch game was also played this trimester; winning the first tourna-ment we ever participated in is not too bad ‘eh? Congratulations Panthers!

On another note, is the moustache back in style? Brought to you by the rugby boys, they are growing a ‘stache to raise funds for men’s health, specifically for prostate cancer. And did you know that half of the proceeds of all EHL Rugby shirts in November were donated to this charity? Now, in December, you’re not expecting the EHL rugby boys and girls to leave you hanging are you? Nope, in-stead… Get ready for the rugby calen-dars, out TOMORROW.

Coming up after the holidays: The infa-mous Rugby Night, providing you with boys, both with and without clothes on.

The Rugby Committee wishes everyone happy holidays and a special thank you to all our supporters out there. Keep the spirit alive!

As the President of the Active Leader-ship Committee, could you briefly ex-plain the principal aim and the core ac-tivities of ALC?The Active Leadership Committee, as its name already implies, is dedicated to help-ing all of our members to become active leaders of tomorrow’s economy. This goal will be achieved during our semi-weekly meetings, where members get the chance to prepare a speech, which they will later perform in front of an audience made up of the remaining members. The speech will then be evaluated by a member who already possesses sufficient experience in giving constructive feedback. Each speech and its evaluation will improve skills by finally enabling the ALC member to be-come an expert in public speaking.

Vision and mission are two terms that are used very often in our immediate envi-ronment. These important terms con-tribute essentially to the success of any new venture. Do you have any of these already established?Certainly, we have formulated both our vi-sion and our mission upon the founding of ALC. Our vision is to create a preferred platform for the EHL community to not only experience the Toastmaster values, but also to enhance public speaking, lead-ership and communication skills. There-fore, our mission is to create challenges by organizing events and gatherings in which attendees can acquire and practice these skills.

Your core activity sounds undoubtedly fundamental to most of us at EHL, who want to settle down in a competitive environment, where confident public appearance is crucial. Apart from the aforementioned speeches, do you of-fer any activity that is entertaining and amusing? Of course, ALC is mainly about learning and improving, but we strive to achieve these objectives through bringing some fun into the learning process, as well. The second part of our meeting has members creating stories by finishing each other’s’ sentences or for instance, a member has to pretend to be selling the world’s best watch to someone. These are the “Table Topics” and almost everyone comes to our gath-erings to witness the hilarious stories that evolve therefrom.

One last thought for our future mem-bers.To our fellow toastmasters to be, bear in mind that ALC does not require any ad-ditional time investment apart from the two monthly gatherings. Therefore, poten-tial members should feel free to attend our meetings whenever their schedule permits it. I can only recommend participating in at least one gathering in order to experi-ence our committee and our spirit, and I promise that you will not be disappointed.

The True Price of furEvery fur coat, trinket, and trim caused an animal tremendous suffering—and took away a life. Animals on fur farms spend their lives in cramped, filthy cag-es, living in their own excrement and are often driven mad by confinement until they are cruelly slaughtered by electro-cution, poison, suffocation or beating. Often they are skinned alive and left to slowly die from infection and bleeding.

Not only is the fur industry horrifically cruel to animals, it has also been proven to be environmentally disastrous. Fur farms produce high levels of formaldehyde, chromium and ammonia, causing air pol-lution, impeding the wintering of trees and contaminating waterways and soil. It takes 20 times more energy from fossil fu-els to produce a fur coat than a synthetic jacket.

have a hearT, don’T buy fur This

winTerLuckily, there is no need to be cruel to stay warm and look good this winter. Cruelty-free fabrics and faux furs are available in stores everywhere. Here are just a few ex-amples of cruelty-free brands: Ralph Lau-ren, Diesel, Nine West, Paul Frank, Juicy Couture, True Religion, Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Abercrombie & Fitch and Stella Mc-Cartney.

Page 29: SV 15 - MERRY NAUGHTY CHRISTMAS

29

At Chalet-à-Gobet, the climate is harsh and snowstorms are frequent. So, get well-equipped and wrapped up, while staying fashionable. We hereby present the Win-ter 2011-2012 genuine must-haves!

This winter will be white. Although it may seem plain and boring, it will light up our wardrobes. With only a discreet presence in last season’s fashion, white is back on every catwalk. Hermès, YSL or Band of outsiders, for example, create the all-white look, with maxi skirts or turtle necks.

EHLLE - Are you ready for snow?

by Himiwa Rakotomavo & Zoé de Montvallon

Which coat will you wear at the Montreux or Strasbourg Christmas markets, while choosing all your Christmas gifts? Coats and fur vests – real or fake – are to be worn with your summer maxi skirts, as seen during the Kenzo catwalk. They are of course indispensable this winter, and should be rather short. The Duffle coat comes right from England and owes its popularity to the British Royal Navy. The wooden toggle-fastenings are made to be easily fastened and unfastened. Every Duffle coat you see today is a copy of the original made by Gloverall. It is making a great come back and is in the spotlight at many catwalks, such as Maje, Sandro, or Bensimon Collection.

To keep your feet warm: If you weren’t sure how to wear the over-the-knee- boots (called cuissardes in French ), this winter you will find a good compromise – the knee-high boots (as seen during the Blu-marine catwalk). For snowy days, you can still put on your moonboots, of course, and change the color according to your mood.

The newest fashion for skiers: During your holidays in Verbier, Courchevel or Zermatt, ski down the slopes with the new Armada skis – Cantika for girls and Thall for boys. Enjoy your holidays and see you there!

Ever been in the situation on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon (it’s not limited to these three days, of course) that you wake up, head throbbing, thirsty as if you’re mouth’s a desert and not quite sure what happened last night, followed by the biggest lie: “I’m never EVER drinking al-cohol again”? Well, I wasn’t quite in such a situation when at the end of September a friend dared me that I’d be incapable of quitting alcohol for a year. Ever told a 5 year old that he will never dare to eat the slug? Well he will, just to prove you wrong and this was the exact same situa-tion… only 18 years later. For me, it was partly this urge that gripped me to agree to stop drinking alcohol for a year and partly, it was the thought that it honestly cannot be THAT difficult. My dad stopped drinking 12 years ago and the friend that challenged me does not drink alcohol, either. They don’t seem to be missing out. Also, I usually take the car when I go out, so I rarely drink when I’m in town anyways… The only occasions I saw as a threat to the challenge’s success were three major events throughout the year – my sister’s 30th birthday, New Year’s Eve and my own birthday. All in all, this

was going to be a piece of cake for me.I soon realized, though, that these ma-jor events would be nothing compared to the little challenges you’re faced with on a more regular basis. For instance, a good glass of wine certainly goes much better with Entrecôte de boeuf avec sauce aux morilles than a jus de pommes. A draft beer with your group after 5 hours of IP certainly lessens tension and stress bet-ter than 5 freshly squeezed orange juices. Just before getting sick, a hot Irish whis-key can lull you into soundless sleep much quicker than a camomile tea. A hot choco-late with a shot of Baileys simply makes you feel rewarded after 6 hours of work as an extra at BDS. And drinking an aperitif or long drink when you’re on a date is just much more romantic and sexy than hav-ing an alcohol-free beer.So in the end, a month after I accepted the challenge, I must admit I drank a glass of wine with friends and enjoyed every last-ing second of it. I don’t regret having tried, nor having failed. I figured: we don’t live during the times of Prohibition, so we might as well enjoy what we have. Cheers to that!

Fete Universelle Tastingby the LikeEat Committee

For our very first tasting of the year, we decided to visit some of the most talented Chefs of the world. None of them are ranked in any famous classifications and none of them are conscious of having such an enormous potential. However, all of them spent a huge amount of time on that special day known as “Fete Uni”. So yes, you got it right! You were our targets! And with a spoon of creativity, half a cup of craziness, a pinch of boldness, a lot of pride in your country, some “EHL spirit” and lots of fun, you made us discover more than 40 countries! From the “how fat will I become after eating that BELGIAN sandwich?” to the “how spicy is that SINGAPORIAN food?  “, we visited each stand, judging you on the atmosphere, the food, the drinks, etc. As you were all amazing, it was very difficult to choose and some of you might not agree with us. Nevertheless, with the help of the F&B manager on that day, here are our favorites:

Best food INDIA – We really appreciated the job you did and the  “home-made” dishes you presented us with. We were amazed by the quality and the taste of your food. We simply loved the delicious chicken and amazing potatoes filled with cottage cheese!

Best drinkMIDDLE-EAST – The rose-scent-ed Champagne made us feel part of the “Arabian Night” story. It was imaginative and very representa-tive. Simply magical!

Best atmosphereMEXICO - We do not know whether it was thanks to your “caliente” associated with your origins, your very own DJ or the guacamole, but you rocked that night!

Best showFRANCE – Incredible team spirit and… Claude François… We are running out of words here… There’s just nothing more to say.

Best stand in generalSWITZERLAND – Amazing decor, an enormous amount of food and a very nice team. We felt as if it was the “national holiday”! You made your fellow citizens proud that night, well-done!

We also want to mention the SCANDI-NAVIA stand with their very beautifully designed ”canapés”, the costumes worn by the AFRICAN team and the special touch organised by the THAILAND stand in or-der to help the victims of the flood.

5 big peaches, sliced Rosemary5 red prunes, sliced Salt and pepper2 Granny Smith ap-ples, sliced

Brown sugar

500g bacon 1 kg baby potatoes10 g paprika powder 1 kg of courgettes10g ginger powder Oregano spicesGarnish

Directions:Garnish: Mix the baby potatoes and sliced courgettes with oregano, salt and pepper. Arrange them on an oven tray. Turkey : If you believe that massaging the turkey helps to tenderize the meat, do it! Brush butter over the whole turkey, from the inside out. Rub the turkey, again from the inside out, with garlic cloves, followed by salt, pepper, rosemary, ginger and pa-prika powder. Wrap the bacon around the peaches, apples and prune slices. Stuff them inside the turkey. Brush the turkey with some Port wine and sprinkle some brown sugar to glaze the turkey. Place the turkey on the roast pan and set it in the oven for an hour and a half, roasting at 180°C. Place the tray with the garnish below the turkey, so that they can soak up the oil dripping down from the turkey*.*Note: Make sure to use a tray with holes to roast the turkey, so that the oil can drip down from the turkey! Serving: Place the turkey in the middle of a large dish and arrange the garnish around it! Be creative!
