MODTRAIN Definition

MODTRAIN: Innovative Modular Vehicle Concepts for an Integrated European Railway System• MODTRAIN background: New trains risk independent interpretations of

requirements and being built from unproven prototype components.• MODTRAIN objective: Definition and proof of the necessary functional,

electrical and mechanical interfaces and validation procedures as reference to deliver the range of interchangeable modules that will make the next generation of intercity trains and universal locomotives possible.

• MODTRAIN framework: Fixed formation passenger trains and universal locomotives capable of 200 km/h and more. Hope to embrace other forms of traction as work advances.

MODTRAIN Targets

Benefits for European Rail Transport: Towards an Integrated European Railway SystemMODTRAIN targets:• Reduction of average cost per pkm / tkm: up to 10%• Increase of new rolling stock productivity: 30%• Increase of the percentage of service proven components built into new

series: from 40-50% up to 80-90%• Market reduction in bidding costs due to increased modularisation of train

architecture: up to 25%• Reduction of manufacturing cost through platform-based production

patterns: ca. 10%• Reduction of time-to-market: ca. 30%• Increase of reliability: up to 25%.• Reduction of maintenance costs: up to 30%.• Integration of the passenger needs at design stage of the new system.

Les Journées de la DRAST : Projets de Recherche Européens : où en sommes-nous? 15022005, Paris 12

MODTRAIN Benefits

Operator benefits: More value for money• Wider choice of supply base to

increase competition• Re-use of proven technology; better

quality, reliability and cost reduction; • Increased infrastructure capacity by

use of more multiple train units • Train crew efficiency• New cross-border operations• Environmental optimisation of design• …

past future• Reduce number of

single parts

• Concentration on sub-assemblies

500 h 10 days2000 h 40 days

• Simplify the connections and interfaces

• Separate functions in pre-tested subassemblies

Les Journées de la DRAST : Projets de Recherche Européens : où en sommes-nous? 15022005, Paris 14

Main work progress achieved until today:• Agreement on a common Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) and

Functional Breakdown Structure (FBS).• Agreement on a common template for Functional Requirement

Specifications (FRS).• Identification by each Subproject of the necessary FRS for

standardisation within the scope of MODTRAIN (in total 88) and drafting of the FRS (1rst draft to be finalised end of 2004).

• Identification by the MODTRAIN Operator Group of a priority list of 34 interoperable constituents for the scope of „Plug-and-Play“

• Industry feedback on the priority list with proposals for possible standardisation levels

• Set up of the MODTRAIN Technical Management Team (TMT) for coordination of the Subsystems‘ work at system level.

The role of MODUSER• MODUSER members:

– UNIFE, ANIE, FIF, RIA, VDB– UIC, UIC member experts– RSSB, Porterbrook

• Information of railway stakeholders of the MODTRAIN project progress via:– MODTRAIN website www.modtrain.com– MODTRAIN newsletter – MODTRAIN stakeholder conferences (next conference planned for April /

May 2005)– At national level: MODTRAIN seminars & events of the national railway

industry associations

Les Journées de la DRAST : Projets de Recherche Européens : où en sommes-nous? 15022005, Paris 17

Next steps for early 2005:• Operator revision of the first draft FRS• Finalisation of the priority list of interoperable constituents and

industry / operator agreement on levels of standardisation & time plan

• Set up of an overall MODTRAIN work plan adapted to the additional work performed (milestones)

• Making the Technical Management Team work: coordination at system level; closer cooperation with the operators

• Ensuring FRS coherency with revised TSIs; link with AEIF experts and AEIF Conformity Group & Economic Evaluation Group
