Dear Members of the Archery Family,

e have had many important events since our last Congress. First, the World Championships were very well organised in Ulsan and they

were broadcast live in HD quality. For the most part it was a very successful competition and many new world records were established!

Less than a month later, there was another major event on our cal-endar; the World Cup Final in Copenhagen—staged in the city centre in the historical “Nyhaven” canal section. This well organised final was also broadcast live in HD quality. The final matches drew many spectators in-cluding HRH the Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, the Minister of Sports, and the Mayor. The FITA Team and the organisers worked very well to-gether with great success in both events. I congratulate them all.

As you know we made some rule changes in the last Congress. We will experiment with these changes in our World Cup next year to perfect the right system. Of course, we will continuously try to balance the needs of both archers and spectators to come up with the ideal solution. For instance, our new set system was tried in Great Britain this Fall—the ar-chers were very pleased.

There was an important Olympic Congress and IOC Session held in Copenhagen right after the World Cup Final. Our Secretary General and I participated in this interesting session, where we heard many contribu-tions and valuable ideas from around the world. I delivered a speech at the Olympic Congress on, “Is Competitive Sport Still Appealing?” During the Congress, an important matter under discussion was youth participation in sport. A young Canadian archer Vanessa LEE was invited as a special guest of the IOC due to her success on YouTube. You may know that the IOC arranged a contest on YouTube and she and a young Korean lady were successful among thousands of participants. Miss LEE demonstrated her abilities as an archer during the IOC Session. It was really a great thing for our sport. Our Secretary General invited her to attend the World Cup in Antalya in 2010.

The IOC has decided to add two new sports to the 2016 and 2020 Games: rugby sevens and golf. There will be another decision in 2013 con-cerning the 2020 Games for the Summer Games Programme and of course we have to continue to be very active and push our World Archery Plan.

At the end of October, we had an Audit and Finance Committee meet-ing in Lausanne to examine our budget several years into the future. We do have a very aggressive development plan in place, and the success of this plan depends on our financial health. In the coming days, I will be paying particular attention to our sponsorship programme as we renew our exist-ing contracts and develop additional sponsorship opportunities.

With these final comments, I would like to wish all of you the best for 2010!

Un grand nombre d’événements majeurs ont eu lieu depuis notre dernier Congrès. Tout d’abord les Championnats du Monde d’Ulsan, qui ont été très bien organisés et diffusés en direct en haute définition. Cette com-pétition a été couronnée de succès, avec notamment l’établissement de nouveaux records du monde.

Moins d’un mois plus tard s’est tenu un autre événement majeur, la Finale de la Coupe du Monde à Copenhague, disputée dans le canal de Nyhavn, en plein centre-ville. Cette compétition a été elle aussi très bien organisée et diffusée en direct en haute définition. Les matches des finales ont attiré un grand nombre de spectateurs parmi lesquels S.A.R. le Prince Frederik du Danemark, le Ministre des Sports et le Maire de Copenhague. Je tiens à féliciter l’équipe de la FITA et les organisateurs de ces deux événements, dont la collaboration a été très réussie.

Comme vous le savez, des changements ont été apportés au règle-ment au cours de notre dernier Congrès. Nous testerons le nouveau format de compétition lors de la prochaine saison de la Coupe du Monde, en vue de le perfectionner. Nous continuons évidemment de chercher un équi-libre parfait entre les besoins des archers et ceux des spectateurs. Par exemple, le nouveau format de sets a été testé en Grande-Bretagne cet automne, et les archers en étaient très contents.

Au lendemain de la Finale de Coupe du Monde, Copenhague a accueilli le Congrès Olympique et la Session du CIO. Notre Secrétaire Général et moi-même avons participé à cet événement passionnant, où nous avons écouté de nombreuses interventions et idées précieuses de délégués du monde entier. J’ai prononcé un discours lors du Congrès Olympique sur le thème “Le sport de compétition est-il toujours aussi attrayant?” Un sujet de discussion important de ce Congrès a été la participation de la jeunesse au sport. Une jeune archère canadienne, Vanessa LEE, a été invitée à Copen-hague comme hôte d’honneur du CIO grâce à son succès au concours de vidéos organisé par le CIO sur YouTube. Cette archère ainsi qu’une jeune Coréenne ont remporté le concours, dont les participants se comptaient par milliers. La jeune Canadienne a démontré ses qualités d’archère lors de la Session du CIO, ce qui a été très positif pour notre sport. Notre Secrétaire Général l’a invitée à l’épreuve de Coupe du Monde d’Antalya en 2010.

Le CIO a décidé d’ajouter deux nouveaux sports au programme des Jeux de 2016 et 2020, le rugby et le golf. En 2013, le CIO prendra les décisions quant aux sports qui seront au programme des Jeux Olympiques d’Été de 2020. Nous devons bien sûr continuer de travailler activement et poursuivre notre Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc.

À la fin octobre, nous avons organisé une réunion de la Commission d’Audit et des Finances à Lausanne afin d’examiner le budget des années à venir. Nous avons un plan de développement très agressif dont le succès dépend de notre santé financière. Ces prochains jours, je vais me consacrer tout particulièrement à notre programme de sponsoring, à l’heure de re-nouveler les contrats existants et de développer de nouveaux partenariats.

Finalement, j’aimerais vous souhaiter une très bonne année 2010!

he 48th FITA Congress took place in Ulsan, Ko-rea on 30-31 August on the eve of the 2009

World Archery Championships. On this occasion, elections were conducted and several awards were distributed; Congress delegates also accepted ma-jor changes to the rules of archery, in a continuing effort to move the sport forward.

IOC Member Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER (TUR) was unanimously re-elected as FITA President, and Mr Tom DIELEN (BEL) was re-appointed as Secretary General. They will carry their second four-year man-date with one goal in mind: continue the successful World Archery Plan. Philippe BOUCLET (FRA) and Sanguan KOSAVINTA (THA) were re-elected as FITA Vice-Presidents. Vladimir ESHEEV (RUS), Mario SCARZELLA (ITA) and Trudy MEDWED (AUT)

Le 48e Congrès de la FITA s’est tenu à Ulsan (Co-rée) les 30-31 août, à la veille des championnats du monde de tir à l’arc. Cela a été l’occasion de procéder à un certain nombre de votes et élections et d’attribuer les récompenses de la FITA. Les délé-gués ont également décidé d’apporter des change-ments majeurs au règlement du tir à l’arc interna-tional, visant à permettre un développement optimal de notre sport sur le long terme.

cials by giving FITA Plaquettes and awards. A Gold Plaquette was awarded to Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER. Mr. Werner BEITER (GER) re-ceived the prestigious Golden Arrow award. Silver Plaquettes went to Kahraman BAGATIR (TUR), Alojz MAUSER (CRO), Trudy MEDWED (AUT), Morten WILLMAN (NOR), Xiuzhi ZHANG (CHN), Kotaro HATA (JPN). Finally, Bronze Plaquettes were awarded to Renato DONI (ITA), Tony McLOUGHLIN (IRL) and Carole HICKS (NZL).

Congress delegates then turned their attention to the World Ar-chery Plan. They praised the work that has been accomplished so far within the long-term, strategic plan to make archery an interna-tionally recognised important Olympic sport. Since 2007, the World Archery Plan has targeted five areas: Identity, Events, Promotion,

La FITA a honoré plusieurs de ses remarquables bénévoles et officiels en décernant Plaquettes et autres récompenses. Une Plaquette d’Or a été attribuée au Prof. Dr Ugur ERDENER. Werner BEITER (GER) a reçu la prestigieuse Flèche d’Or. Des Plaquettes d’Argent ont été remises à Kahraman BAGATIR (TUR), Alojz MAU-SER (CRO), Trudy MEDWED (AUT), Morten WILLMAN (NOR), Xiuzhi ZHANG (CHN) et Kotaro HATA (JPN). Enfin, les Plaquettes de Bronze sont revenues à Renato DONI (ITA), Tony McLOUGHLIN (IRL) ainsi que Carole HICKS (NZL).

Les délégués au Congrès ont ensuite concentré toute leur at-tention sur le Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc. L’assistance a loué le

Partnerships and Expansion. Focus groups have tackled the vari-ous aspects of the plan with concrete actions, such as: defining the values and image of archery, launching (this year) the World Archery brand—the flagship product of archery, and giving greater differentiation and identity to recurve and compound to ensure a better future for both.

Finally, the Congress took major steps forward in accepting a series of new competition rules that will apply as of 1 April 2010. The mixed team competition that was introduced as an exhibition category in 2009 will now be official! This event consists of one man and one woman from the same team shooting four ends of four arrows in a match. Other major change, archers will have to win three sets to win their matches. Each end of three arrows will count as a set. Of course, tie-breakers, as they occur, may still be required!

Congress also sent a clear message to give more identity to compound and differentiate it from recurve. Compound means ultimate accuracy, and athletes will be able to prove it with the Hit/Miss scoring system. Compound archers will shoot at 50 me-tres with a very challenging hit-zone target. FITA will put together a transition plan from the regular target to the Hit/Miss targets. The new set system will also be applicable to compound.

travail accompli dans le cadre de ce plan stratégique et à long terme visant à faire reconnaître le tir à l’arc comme un sport olym-pique important. Depuis 2007, le monde du tir à l’arc travaille sur cinq objectifs cibles: Identité, Événements, Promotion, Partenariats et Expansion. Des groupes de travail ont abordé les différents aspects du plan par des actions concrètes telles que définir les valeurs et l’image du tir à l’arc, lancer la marque World Archery (véritable porte-drapeau du tir à l’arc) cette année, et donner une identité distincte à l’arc classique et à l’arc à poulies, afin de leur donner de meilleures chances pour l’avenir.

Le tir à l’arc a franchi un cap important avec l’acceptation d’une série de nouveaux règlements, qui entreront en vigueur le 1er avril 2010. L’épreuve mixte introduite comme exhibition en 2009 sera désormais officielle! Rappelons que cette épreuve réunit un archer et une archère d’une même équipe nationale tirant chacun quatre volées de quatre flèches par match. Autre changement ma-jeur, les archers devront gagner trois sets pour remporter un match. Chaque volée de trois flèches comptera comme un set. Bien sûr, en cas d’égalité, ils tireront un tie-break!

Enfin, le Congrès a clairement exprimé sa volonté de donner une identité propre à l’arc à poulies, en le différenciant davantage de l’arc classique. L’arc à poulies permet la plus haute précision, ce que les archers pourront démontrer grâce au nouveau système de scores “Hit/Miss”. Dans cette division, les archers tireront à une distance de 50 mètres vers une cible hit-zone très exigeante. La FITA mettra en place un programme spécial afin d’assurer la tran-sition entre les cibles normales actuelles et les cibles Hit/Miss. Le nouveau système de sets sera également appliqué à cette division.

he World Archery Championships took place in Ulsan (Korea) on 1-9 September 2009.

The venue for this event was the beautiful Ulsan Munsu International Archery Field built at the foot of the mountains. Expecting more than 400 archers from over 70 countries, the Organising Committee did not hesitate to move a mountain to make their field bigger!

In the recurve competition, LEE Chang-Hwan (KOR) and JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR) emerged as the big winners! Korea showed their complete domination of re-curve archery by winning two gold and two silver medals, out of a possible six medals! In compound, the new champions were Reo WILDE (USA) and Albina LOGINOVA (RUS). All the individual champi-ons led their teams to gold the day before!

Recurve MenGold Medal: IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) vs LEE Chang-Hwan (KOR)This 100% Korean final featured two archers who had won the team gold together in Leipzig 2007 and at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. IM Dong-Hyun is the individual world champion from Leipzig and the World Cup winner from Lausanne 2008; LEE Chang-Hwan, despite his large international ex-perience, has never won an individual medal at this level. Lee had been defeated by IM 108-109 just one month before this final, at the World Cup stage in Shanghai and probably wanted revenge!

In the first end, LEE scored 9-10-10 to take a 2-point (29-27) lead over IM, who shot 8-9-10. In

IM Dong-Hyun est le champion en titre de Leipzig et a remporté la Finale de Coupe du Monde 2008 à Lausanne; LEE a une très grande expé-rience internationale mais n’a jamais gagné de médailles individuelles à ce niveau. Il a été battu par IM 108-109 un mois plus tôt lors de l’étape de Coupe du Monde de Shanghai. LEE espérait prendre sa revanche!

the second end, IM shot 9-x10-9 to recover 1 point and trail 55-56. From the third end IM seemed to be more affected by the wind than LEE was. IM shot 9-9-9 in the third end, while LEE did slightly better with 10-9-9. In so doing, LEE lead by 2 points with three arrows to go. IM shot a weak 8 to start the last end, and LEE a 9. IM shot two 9s and this must have relieved some of the pressure on LEE, who scored two 10s to clinch the gold over his teammate, 113-108!

Bronze Medal: OH Jin-Hyek (KOR) vs Viktor RUBAN (UKR)The 2008 Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN was set to shoot against OH Jin-Hyek, the new FITA Round world record holder and No. 1 seed, who was competing in a world championships for the first time and had little international experience.

A very strong wind came up as the athletes started this match. OH took an early lead over RUBAN, 29-28. However the Korean was affected by the wind in the second end, scoring 10-7-x10, while RUBAN made a very good come-back with 9-10-10 to lead 57-56. The Ukrainian maintained his lead for the rest of the match. Showing his experience, he won the bronze by just one point, 111-110!

Recurve womenGold Medal: KWAK Ye-Ji (KOR) vs JOO Hyun-Jung (KOR) In the women’s category as well, the gold medal final was 100% Korean! JOO had won a team gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, where KWAK was an alternate. After winning gold in the team competition in Ulsan, both JOO Hyun-Jung and KWAK Ye-Ji probably wanted to add another gold medal to their fast-growing collection! They had met earlier in 2009 at the Shanghai World Cup stage. The winner was KWAK (113-110).

Ce dernier s’est emparé du record du monde de l’épreuve FITA en qualifications, une belle réussite pour sa première participation à des championnats du monde! Mais en finale OH pourrait souffrir de son manque d’expé-rience au niveau international.

Le vent soufflait très fort quand les archers sont entrés sur le terrain. OH a tiré x10-9-10 à la première volée pour prendre l’avantage sur RUBAN, 29-28. Mais le Coréen a été affecté par le vent dans la deuxième volée, avec des flèches à 10-7-x10, alors que RUBAN est revenu au score grâce à de bons tirs (9-10-10). L’Ukrainien a pris la tête pour 1 point, 57-56, et a montré son expérience en conservant son avance jusqu’à la fin du match. Il s’est emparé du bronze 111-110!

The final promised to be very tight. JOO had the best start, shooting 9-10-x10, while KWAK shot 9-9-10. JOO led 29-28. KWAK was stronger in the following end scoring 9-10-x10. JOO was 2 points behind at 8-10-9 and lost her lead to trail by 1 point, 56-57. The two athletes were indeed very close, not showing any nervousness and shooting to their full potential. They finished the third end in a tie at 84-84. Both Koreans started the last end with a 9. KWAK then shot a 9 while JOO managed a 10 to recover the lead before the final arrow. It was a 10 for KWAK, but JOO clinched the victory with a 10 of her own! Both Koreans only had one 8, but JOO had one more 10 than KWAK. JOO was the new world champion!

Bronze Medal: Karina LIPIARSKA (POL) vs Natalia SANCHEZ (COL)The two archers were tied after the first three arrows, 26-26. The wind came up, causing LIPIARSKA to score only 9-8-6 in the sec-ond end. SANCHEZ had a better group and scored 8-9-9. The Co-lombian led 52-49. The wind got stronger in the second half of the match, but LIPIARSKA still managed a very good score in the third end, 10-9-9. SANCHEZ lost some of her advantage with 9-8-9 but was still in the lead, 78-77. LIPIARSKA seemed to be tense in the last end, scoring only 7-9-6. SANCHEZ was more consistent, finishing with 8-9-10. The final score was 105-99 for SANCHEZ, who won the bronze medal!

and in Ulsan 2009. Individually, he won gold at the World Cup Fi-nal in Merida 2006, the World Indoor Championships in Nimes 2003 and the World Indoor Championships in Aalborg 2005. Both archers looked very solid, opening with 29s in the first end. WILDE shot first in the second end and started with a 10. GRIM-WOOD had a 9 which caused him to trail 58-59 halfway through. The two were less consistent in the next end. GRIMWOOD scored 9-10-9 (the last arrow just on the line), while WILDE shot 9-10-x10. The American was in the lead before the last three arrows, 88-86. In the last end, both archers showed they really wanted the gold

Poulies HommesMédaille d’or: Reo WILDE (USA) vs Liam GRIMWOOD (GBR) Reo WILDE, 35 ans, est l’un des archers les plus expérimentés de cette compétition. Champion du monde par équipe à Leipzig, il a conservé son titre à Ulsan avec les Etats-Unis. Individuelle-ment, il a gagné la finale de Coupe du Monde à Mérida en 2006, ainsi que les Championnats du Monde de Tir Intérieur 2003 à Nîmes et 2005 à Aalborg. Reo WILDE espère sûrement suivre les traces de son père Dee WILDE, champion du monde 1997, qui a battu des records du monde à plus de 50 reprises. Quant à GRIMWOOD, il a participé à plusieurs étapes de Coupe du Monde depuis 2006. Il s’est classé 4e à Douvres en 2007 et 4e à Saint-Domingue en 2008.

by starting with two 10s. GRIMWOOD was solid on his last arrow: another 10! WILDE needed a 9 to win, and he shot a 10! Final score: 116-114 and so Reo WILDE won the gold medal, 12 years after his famous father!

Bronze Medal – Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) vs Jose DUO (ESP)DUO was 4th at the World Championships in Leipzig 2007 and was shooting again for a bronze medal. He had the best start with 10-X10-10, 10-9-10 to lead 59-57. CLIFTON must have been a bit nervous at the start, but he finished really well, with 10-X10-10 in the third end. Meanwhile DUO shot well with some 10s but had a couple of bad arrows. He lost a few points in the third end with 8-9-10, tied score at 87! Then CLIFTON shot a 10 liner and a solid 10. DUO shot a 10 and an 8. CLIFTON concluded with a 10 to clinch the bronze! Although DUO finished with a 9, he was the unlucky 4th again at the World Championships.

Compound WomenGold Medal: Jorina COETZEE (RSA) vs Albina LOGINOVA (RUS)This was a match between youth and experience! The No. 21 seed from the qualifications Jorina COETZEE, only 17, competed in the World Youth Championships earlier in the summer. On the other side, LOGINOVA was the runner-up from Leipzig 2007 and was in great shape in 2009, recently placing 3rd in Shanghai.

LOGINOVA wanted to win the gold in Ulsan after her silver at Leipzig! The Russian had the experience of this type of competition and started well, x10-9-x10, while COETZEE seemed to be ner-vous and shot 9-9-9 (last arrow just out of the 10 ring). LOGINOVA led 29-27 and followed with a perfect 30 in the next end! Mean-while, COETZEE only managed 9-8-8 to trail 52-59. LOGINOVA’s experience was really showing in her scores. She increased her lead further in the third end, shooting 9-x10-9, while COETZEE scored 8-9-9. The Russian led 87-78. The young South African concluded with a good 9-9-x10. LOGINOVA shot 9 and x10, mean-ing she just needed a hit to win, and she scored x10! It was a sec-ond gold medal for LOGINOVA after she became team champion the day before in Ulsan!

Jorina COET-ZEE n’a que 17 ans et a participé aux Championnats du Monde de la Jeunesse au début de l’été. De son côté, LOGINOVA a été médaillée d’argent à Leipzig en 2007 et espérait sûrement gagner l’or à Ulsan! Elle a affiché sa grande forme en se classant 3e à la Coupe du Monde de Shanghai 2009.

La Russe a tiré la première et réussi une bonne première volée, x10-9-x10, alors que COETZEE a fait 9-9-9 (sa dernière flèche était juste en dehors du cercle de 10). LOGINOVA menait 29-27 et a continué sur sa lancée avec un beau score de 30! Entre-temps, COETZEE n’a tiré que 9-8-8 pour être menée 52-59. The 21-year-old from Italy was seeded No. 9 after qualifications. SOEMOD had the best start leading 29-28, but LONGO came back with nine 10s in a row (!) to clinch the match 118-113. This was a superb performance from LONGO!

Mais SOEMOD pouvait encore gagner une médaille de bronze à Ulsan face à l’Italienne de 21 ans Laura LONGO. La Danoise a eu le meilleur départ pour mener 29-28. Cependant LONGO a enchaîné avec neuf 10 (!) pour finalement gagner le match 118-113.

n the team finals, Korea took the gold in both the men’s and women’s recurve world

championships. In the compound division, the US men were untouchable and in a dramatic match, the Russian women took the gold med-al from Korea. The mixed team competition, launched this year at the World Cup, was shot for the first time at a world championship as a very exciting exhibition-only match!

Recurve MenGold Medal: Korea vs FranceThis final featured the leader and the runner-up from the qualifications! The Koreans, who had broken the FITA round world record earlier in the week, were the overwhelming favourites in this match against the French team, who were 4th in the World Cup ranking list. The Koreans looked untouchable enter-ing the final, their team being the defending cham-pion from Leipzig 2007 and the current Olympic Champion. Korea also celebrated great success in 2009 by winning the World Cup events in Antalya and in Shanghai, where they had met this same French team in the final and won by a large margin.

In Ulsan, France took an early lead over Korea, 29-27. Korea then scored 9-9-x10. Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA) was bothered by the wind and scored only a 7, followed by two 8s from his team-mates. Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) scored his last ar-row with 1 second left. Korea now led 55-52. France made a very good come-back in the second end with 30, to which Korea answered with 9-10-9. The Frenchmen then scored x10-7-10, for a total of 57. The Koreans shot 9-x10-9 to lead 111-109. France started superbly in the third end with another x10-

Lors des finales par équipes des Champion-nats du Monde de Tir à l’Arc, la Corée a gagné la médaille d’or en arc classique aussi bien dans la compétition féminine que masculine. Dans la division poulies, les Etats-Unis ont été intouchables chez les hommes. Alors que dans la catégorie féminine, les Russes se sont em-parées de la médaille d’or après un match à grands rebondissements contre les Coréennes. Les Coréens, qui avaient battu le record du monde de l’Epreuve FITA la se-maine précédente, étaient les grands favoris de ce match et semblaient intouchables. Leur équipe était la championne en titre de Leipzig 2007 et cham-pionne olympique 2008. La Corée a également connu des succès plus récents avec des victoires lors des étapes de Coupe du Monde d’Antalya et de Shanghai cette année! Lors de cette dernière com-pétition, les Coréens ont battu l’équipe de France en finale 216-207.

A Ulsan, c’est la France qui a pris le meilleur dé-part pour mener 29-27. La Corée a ensuite tiré 9-9-x10. x10-10! With scores of 10-9-10, Korea led by only 1 point at this stage. France then shot 9-9-8, while Korea followed with 8-10-9 to lead 167-165. France went on to shoot very well in the last end: 10-8-10. Korea probably started to feel the home crowd pressure with only 8-8-9. The match would be decided in the last three arrows. France concluded with 9-9-9, leaving the door open for their opponent. As the crowd cheered loudly, IM Dong-Hyun, LEE Chang-Hwan and OH Jin Hyek scored 10-x10-10 to give Korea the gold over France, 222-220!

Bronze Medal: Japan vs ChinaThis was a final between the No. 6 seed China and No. 12 Japan. China placed third at the 2008 Olympics, but only 4th in Antalya and 8th in Shanghai at this year’s World Cup stages. The last time these teams met was at the 2006 World Cup Stage in Antalya, where Japan won in the semifinal 222-212.

In this final, China took an early lead (28-25) over Japan, but the scores of the next three arrows were exactly the opposite and the two teams tied at 52-52. China raised their level of accuracy in the next end with 10-9-9-9-10-10 (57), while Japan scored only 51 (7-8-9-9-9-9). China led by 6 points, 109-103. Japan an-swered with a perfect score of 30. Japan recovered 1 point to trail 158-159. Japan started strongly in the final end: 9-9-10. China faltered with 9-7-9, which gave the Japanese a 2-point advantage at this stage! Japan shot a good 8-x10-10 in their final arrows, meaning China had to score 10-10-10 to tie. They managed only 9-10-9 and Japan won the bronze medal, 214-212!

Recurve womenGold Medal: Korea vs JapanThe battle for gold was between close neighbours! Korea, the No. 1 seed from qualifications, was the favourite for this final against the

menait 55-52. La France a fait un très bon retour à la deuxième volée avec 30 points, ce à quoi la Corée à répondu par 9-10-9. Les Français ont terminé leur volée sur un score de x10-7-10 (57 points au total). La Corée a quant à elle tiré 9-x10-9 pour mener 111-109. La France a entamé le troisième end de superbe ma-nière avec x10-x10-10! Avec des tirs à 10-9-10, la Corée n’avait plus qu’un point d’avance. Puis les Français se sont relâchés avec 9-9-8, et la Corée a tiré 8-10-9 pour mener 167-165. Après des tirs français à 10-8-10, les Coréens ont certainement ressenti un peu de pression et n’ont pu faire que 8-8-9. Le match allait donc se jouer sur les trois dernières flèches! La France, en concluant sur 9-9-9, a laissé une porte ouverte à l’équipe adverse. Sous les en-couragements du public, IM Dong-Hyun, LEE Chang-Hwan et OH Jin Hyek ont tiré leurs dernières flèches à 10-x10-10 pour donner l’or à leur pays, 222-220!

Médaille de bronze: Japon vs ChineCette finale a mis aux prises la Chine, tête de série no 6, et le Japon, no 12. La Chine a été médaillée de bronze aux Jeux Olym-piques 2008, mais ne s’est classée que 4e à Antalya et 8e à Shan-ghai lors des récentes étapes de Coupe du Monde. La dernière fois que les deux équipes se sont rencontrées, à Antalya en 2006, le Japon a gagné en demi-finale, 222-212.

Dans cette finale, la Chine a pris l’avantage d’entrée sur le Ja-pon (28-25). Mais les scores des trois flèches suivantes ont été exactement l’inverse, et les deux équipes se sont retrouvées ex aequo, 52-52. La Chine a élevé son niveau à la volée suivante, 10-9-9-9-10-10 pour un total de 57, alors que le Japon n’a fait que 7-8-9-9-9-9 (51). La Chine menait par 6 points, 109-103. Le Japon a parfaitement répondu en récoltant ensuite 30 points. La Chine a perdu de son avance en ne tirant que 9-9-8, même si elle conservait 2 points d’avance. Puis le Japon a tiré 10-7-8, contre 9-7-8 du côté chinois. Le Japon a récupéré un point et rattrapait gentiment la Chine, 158-159. Les Japonais ont bien commencé leur dernière volée: 9-9-10. Also, they placed first this year at the World Cup stages in Antalya and Shanghai. As for Japan, interestingly in Ulsan their teams qualified for the finals in both the men’s and women’s re-curve categories, despite a mediocre performance in qualifications. The women’s team had placed 4th at the Summer Universiade in Belgrade and the World Cup stage in Turkey this year.

These teams have met face-to-face three times in recent years. Korea beat Japan at the 2006 World Cup Stage in Antalya and at the 2007 Asian Championships, where the two teams tied at 217-217, before Japan lost in the shoot-off 24-27. Finally, the most recent Korean victory over Japan came this year in the semifinals at the World Cup stage in Antalya.

In this final, the score was tied at 26 after the first three arrows. Korea continued with x10-10-9, Japan 9-9-10. Korea led 55-54 and increased their lead to 113-106 with scores of 9-x10-9 and 10-x10-10! In the third end, Japan scored 8-9-8-8-x10-9 while Korea shot 9-9-8-9-10 with their first five arrows. The last Korean archer shot with only 10 seconds to go and she scored a 10 to give a 10-point lead to her team! Japan was inconsistent in the final end, concluding with 10-7-7-10-x10-7. Korea scored x10-9-9-9-9 to clinch the gold with one arrow to go. The last archer YUN Ok-Hee shot a perfect x10 to win the gold by the highest margin of the day, 224-209! Their victory left KWAK Ye Ji in tears!

Bronze Medal: Belarus vs RussiaAnother match between two neighbours featured the No. 12 and No. 14 seeds from qualifications. What a surprise to find Belarus, a country that has not medalled in recent years, at this stage of the competition! As for the Russians, they qualified this year for the finals at the Antalya and Shanghai World Cup stages—but lost both times.

In the final for the bronze, both teams shot some bad arrows in the first end. Russia started with a 6 as a consequence of the wind. The scores for Russia were 6-8-10-6-7-9, while Belarus shot 8-4-8-7-7-9 (Russia led 46-43). The two teams performed better under the pressure in the second end: Belarus shot 10-9-x10-9-8-9 and Russia x10-8-10-9-6-9. The match was very close, with Russia leading 99-98. Belarus came back in the third end, scoring 10-7-9-9-9-x10 while Russia faltered with 8-9-8-9-7-9. Belarus took the lead, 152-149, but Russia soon recovered with their next three arrows (9-9-7), mainly because of two bad shots from Belarus (9-6-6). The Russians concluded with 10-10-10 to clinch the bronze before the Belarusians even shot their last three arrows. The final score was 204-199.

Compound MenGold Medal: Russia vs USAThis was a match between experience and youth! Reo WILDE and Braden GELLENTHIEN of the USA entered this final as defending world team champions, while Russia was competing in their first ever final in a world championships in this division. The Americans were in great shape, having won the World Cup stage in Santo Domingo earlier this year and the Summer Universiade in Belgrade, where they defeated Russia in the semifinal. Classique FemmesMédaille d’or: Corée vs JaponCette finale a été une bataille entre voisins! La Corée, classée no 1 des qualifications, partait favorite face au Japon, classé 14e (!). Comme chez les hommes, la Corée est l’équipe championne du monde et championne olympique en titre. Elle a également rem-porté les épreuves de Coupe du Monde d’Antalya et de Shanghai. Quant aux équipes japonaises, chez les femmes comme chez les hommes, elles sont parvenues à se qualifier pour les finales mal-gré leurs performances médiocres lors des qualifications. L’équipe féminine s’est récemment classée 4e de l’Universiade de Belgrade et de l’étape de Coupe du Monde d’Antalya.

La Corée et le Japon se sont affrontés à trois reprises ces der-nières années. La Corée a battu son grand voisin lors de l’étape de Coupe du Monde 2006 d’Antalya et lors des Jeux Asiatiques 2007, où les deux équipes étaient ex aequo à 217-217 avant que le Japon ne perde en barrage! Enfin, la dernière victoire de la Corée a eu lieu à Antalya en demi-finale de l’épreuve de Coupe du Monde en juin dernier.

A Ulsan en finale, les deux équipes ont commencé par une éga-lité à 26-26. La Corée a poursuivi avec x10-10-9 contre 9-9-10 pour les Japonaises. La Corée menait 55-54 et a augmenté son avance à 113-106 grâce à ses scores de 9-x10-9-10-x10-10. Au troisième end, le Japon a tiré 8-9-8-8-x10-9, alors que la Corée a réussi 9-9-8-9-10 pour ses cinq premières flèches. La dernière archère coréenne n’avait plus que 10 secondes pour tirer, et elle a fait un 10 pour offrir un avantage de 10 points à son équipe! A 168-158, la Corée s’envolait vers la médaille d’or. Le Japon a été inconstant au cours de la dernière volée, conclue sur le score de 10-7-7-10-x10-7. La Corée a tiré x10-9-9-9-9, médaille d’or assurée avant de tirer la dernière flèche! La dernière archère YUN Ok-Hee a tout de même tiré un superbe x10 pour l’honneur. La Corée a gagné la médaille d’or au détriment du Japon avec la plus grande marge de la journée, 224-209, une victoire qui a arraché des larmes à KWAK Ye-Ji!

Médaille de bronze: Belarus vs RussieEncore un match entre pays voisins, le no. 12 et le no. 14 des qua-lifications! Quelle surprise de trouver le Belarus à ce stade de la compétition! Cette équipe n’a jamais était médaillée ces dernières années. Du côté russe, l’équipe s’est qualifiée pour deux finales d’étapes de Coupe du Monde cette année, à Antalya et Shanghai, mais elle s’est inclinée les deux fois.

Dans ce match, les deux équipes ont tiré de très mauvaises flèches d’entrée. La Russie a commencé avec un 6, sûrement à cause du vent. La Russie a tiré 6-8-10-6-7-9, alors que le Belarus a fait 8-4-8-7-7-9. La Russie menait 46-43. Les deux équipes se sont reprises à la deuxième volée pour tirer plus près de leur niveau habituel. As a result the USA increased their lead to 116-111. The USA lost one point of their advantage in the next end, scor-ing 10-x10-10-9-8-9, while the Russians improved from their previous score with 9-10-10-x10-10-9 (total 58). The USA led 173-169. The young Russian team had an almost perfect last end, scoring five 10s in a row! The last archer shot an 8. The USA started with a 9 but followed with five 10s of their own. They won the gold 232-227! Despite this defeat, the future looks bright for the young Russian team!

Bronze Medal: El Salvador vs FinlandBoth teams were new at this level! It was a long road for Finland who made it from 13th in the qualifications all the way to the bronze medal final! Their opponents El Salvador were seeded No. 3.

Finland opened the match with 9-9-8-9-10-9 (total 54) to lead by 1 point over El Salvador 10-9-8-9-9-8 (total 53). The Salvador-ians improved in the second end to take a 1-point lead, 111-110. Finland lost 2 more points over the next three arrows: 9-9-9 to El Salvador’s 10-9-10. The Finns then scored 10-9-10, while El Sal-vador managed x10-10-9. Interesting fact, out of 6 arrows Jorge JIMENEZ shot only one 9 and five 10s! El Salvador led 169-166. Both teams amassed 27 points in the first three arrows of the fourth end. Finland shot their last three arrows first: 9-9-10. JI-MENEZ scored x10, followed by a 9 by Rigoberto HERNANDEZ. The third archer from El Salvador Roberto HERNANDEZ needed a 7 to win, and he shot a 9! El Salvador won the bronze, 224-221.

Compound WomenGold Medal: Russia vs KoreaThe leader of the qualifications Korea and the runner-up Russia made it to the final! This compound final was the first ever for Korea in a world championships. Russia was the recent winner of the World Cup stages in Antalya and Shanghai. Korea was in good shape too, having won bronze at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade.

Korea started the gold medal final with 29; Russia shot 27. Ko-rea followed with a perfect 30 to the delight of the spectators. Rus-sia was really feeling the pressure and shot only 7-8-9 to trail 51-59. Korea didn’t do as well in the next end, scoring 8-9-10-9-10-9 for a total of 55. With their total of 54, the Russians lost another point to Korea, who led 113-105. In the third end, Korea started with a 6. The second archer crossed the line before the first archer returned from the shooting line, causing them a line penalty. Their first three arrows were 6-9-9, while Russia scored 9-7-8. The Ko-rean girls then paid a high price for their line mistake. The second Korean girl shot with only 20 seconds remaining as a consequence of the time penalty and she shot a 10! The third Korean came to the line with only 6 seconds left and her last arrow didn’t even hit

Bronze Medal: Mexico vs USAThis match featured the USA, No. 3 seed from qualifications, and the No. 5, Mexico. The US team had won the bronze in Leipzig and was hoping to repeat this in Ulsan! The two teams met in March at the World Cup stage in Santo Domingo where the USA defeated Mexico in the final, 227-225.

The USA started this final with 27 to take the lead over Mexico, who scored 26. The USA followed with 9-9-8. After Almendra OCHOA shot an 8, Mexico had two arrows to shoot with only 20 seconds left. Ana CRISANTO scored a 9, while Linda OCHOA shot just in time for an 8. The USA led 53-51. Mexico continued to have problems with the clock in the third end. They scored 52, al-lowing the USA to increase their lead to 6 points, 109-103. In the third end Mexico scored 9-9-8-8-9-8, while the USA was almost perfect, scoring 10-10-x10-9-10-10! The USA went on to win the bronze, 223-208.

Les Coréennes ont payé leur erreur au prix fort: la deuxième archère s’est présentée alors qu’il ne restait que 20 secondes, ce qui ne l’a pas empêchée de faire un 10! Mais la troisième Coréenne est arrivée sur la ligne 6 secondes avant la fin du temps imparti. Sa flèche n’a même pas touché la cible. Score de 9-10-0 pour la Corée. Après cet incident, les Russes ont retrouvé leur confiance et ont tiré 10-10-10. La Russie, me-née auparavant de 8 points, a pris la tête 159-156! La Corée a fini tant bien que mal avec 10-10-9-9-8-7. La Russie, au bé-néfice de l’ascendant psychologique, a bien terminé son match, 10-9-9-10-9-9. Score final: 215-109, la Russie a été sacrée championne du monde!

Cette équipe composée de Victorya KOVAL et du champion olympique Viktor RUBAN a gagné l’or devant la Chine, alors que la Corée a pris le bronze. Chez les poulies, les Russes Albina LOGINOVA et Vladimir FEDOSOV ont été invincibles en finale face au Danemark: seize 10, premier score parfait dans cette épreuve! Quel superbe spectacle pour cette exhibition! Le Canada a gagné le bronze devant l’Italie 156-154.

he Archery World Cup Final was held on 26 September 2009 in Copenhagen (DEN). This

extraordinary event took place on the waters of the historic canal of Nyhavn, a canal lined with colourful, picturesque buildings and filled with moored sailing boats. The four best archers of the year per category had qualified based on their top three results out of the four World Cup stages in Santo Domingo (DOM), Porec (CRO), Antalya (TUR) and Shanghai (CHN).

The Archery World Cup Final was a part of The Danish Year of Sport 2009. The World Cup Final was the perfect opening shot for the IOC Session and Olympic Congress, the largest of the 54 sport events held this year in Denmark. The semifinal matches were held in the morning and the finals in the af-ternoon with HRH the Crown Prince Frederik, the Culture Minister of Denmark Carina CHRISTENSEN and other dignitaries present. Total prize-money of more than 150,000 USD was at stake.

The venue was constructed on the pier at Nyhavn canal. The archers aimed across the water at targets placed 70 metres out on a bridge across the canal that had been made for the occasion. Nyhavn, which means new harbour in Danish, is both the most vi-brant meeting place of present-day Copenhagen and an attraction of historical significance. The ca-nal was originally built in 1673. La Finale de la Coupe du Monde de Tir à l’Arc s’est tenue le 26 septembre 2009 à Copenha-gue. Cette compétition exceptionnelle s’est dé-roulée au-dessus des eaux du canal de Nyhavn, célèbre pour ses bateaux amarrés et pour les couleurs vives des maisons qui le bordent. Les quatre meilleurs archers de l’année par catégo-rie se sont qualifiés sur la base de leurs trois meilleurs résultats lors des étapes de Coupe du Monde de Saint-Domingue (DOM), Porec (CRO), Antalya (TUR) et Shanghai (CHN).

Les demi-finales de la Coupe du Monde ont été tirées le matin et les finales l’après-midi en présence de SAS le Prince Frederik du Danemark, la Ministre de la Culture Carina CHRISTENSEN et d’autres notables. Des prix d’une valeur de 150 000 dollars étaient en jeu. La Finale de Coupe du Monde faisait partie de l’Année Danoise du Sport 2009. Elle a été une belle introdcution au plus grand des 54 événements sportifs accueillis par le Danemark cette année, la Session et le Congrès du CIO.

Nyhavn, qui signifie “nouveau port” en danois, est un lieu chargé d’histoire devenu l’endroit le plus vivant de Copenhague. Le canal, construit en 1673, a vu accoster le long de ses quais des bateaux ve-nus du monde entier. Marins, bistrots, prostituées et soirées ont laissé leurs marques sur le vieux port. Les maisons décrépies qui avaient un jour abrité marchands et maisons closes ont été restaurées, et proposent désormais restaurants cosy et terrasses. On trouve aussi à Nyhavn l’ancienne maison du grand écrivain danois Hans Christian ANDERSEN, qui y a écrit ses premiers contes en 1835. Danish author Hans Christian ANDERSEN wrote his first fairy tales in 1835 and lived for several years.

Recurve Men1st place: Simon TERRY (GBR) vs Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) GALIAZZO was the 2004 Olympic champion, while Simon TERRY was a double medallist at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games! TERRY came out of retirement and won a team silver at the 2007 World Championships.

TERRY opened with unusually low scores: a 7 followed by a 9 and an 8. GALIAZZO also had one bad arrow (8), but still led 27-24. TERRY started the second end with another 7, losing more points to trail GALIAZZO 50-55. In the third end, it was GALIAZZO’s turn to shoot low scores. With a total of 26, he lost 3 points to TERRY who scored 29, but the Italian was still in the lead, 81-79. With a last end of 8-10-8, the Briton did not put much pressure on GALIAZZO. The 2004 Olympic champion scored 9-9-9 to win the match 108-105. It’s another major victory for the Italian archer!

3rd place: Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) vs Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND)TALUKDAR won the very first World Cup stage in 2006. One of the most talented archers on earth, Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) was the 2006 Youth world champion. He has won two World Cup stages since then, placed third at the Lausanne final last year and recently clinched the team silver medal at the Ulsan World Championships. The two archers had met just once before, at the 2008 World Cup stage in Santo Domingo, where GIROUILLE won 108-107.

Classique HommesGrande finale: Simon TERRY (GBR) vs Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) Cette finale a opposé GALIAZZO, le champion olympique 2004, à Simon TERRY, double médaillé de bronze des Jeux Olympiques de Barcelone 1992! TERRY a également gagné l’argent par équipe aux Mondiaux 2007.

L’Anglais a entamé cette finale avec des scores inhabituelle-ment bas: 7-9-8. GALIAZZO a également tiré une mauvaise flèche (8), mais a tout de même pris la tête 27-24. TERRY n’a pas réussi à se reprendre avec un 7 au deuxième end qui a fait augmenter son retard sur GALIAZZO, 50-55. A la troisième volée, c’est l’Italien qui a mal tiré. Avec son total de 26, GALIAZZO a perdu un peu de son avance sur TERRY, auteur de 29 points, mais conservait la tête 81-79. Avec une dernière volée à 8-10-8, le Britannique n’a pas mis trop de pression sur son adversaire. Le champion olympique de 2004 a tiré 9-9-9 pour une nouvelle victoire de rang, 108-105!

GIROUILLE had a slightly better start in the first end. With 10-9-8, he took a 1-point lead over TALUKDAR who scored 8-9-9. GIR-OUILLE seemed to be used to shooting with very little time remain-ing, as he shoots last when competing with the French team. In this competition the archers had only 20 seconds to shoot each arrow, much less than the 30 seconds they usually have. In the second end, the Frenchman shot 9-10-10 to increase his advantage by 2 points: he led 56-54. TALUKDAR had a perfect come-back in the third end with 30 points. He trailed by only one point, 83-84, before the last three arrows. GIROUILLE did not let the pressure bother him in the last end. His opponent shot 10-9-8, to which the Frenchman answered with 10, 9, and finally a 10 to conclude the match and win 113-110. GIROUILLE successfully defended his third place from last year!

Recurve Women1st place: KWAK Ye-Ji (KOR) vs ZHAO Ling (CHN) KWAK, a recent team world champion, was the individual silver medallist at the Ulsan World Championships this year and earned 1st place at the World Cup stage 3 in Antalya. ZHAO Ling (CHN) was victorious this year at the Porec World Cup stage 2. This was a rematch of the Shanghai World Cup third place final in August, where KWAK defeated ZHAO 104-102.

KWAK had an almost perfect start in this final with 29 points to lead ZHAO who scored 9-9-8. In the second end, the Korean archer scored another 29 points, increasing her margin over ZHAO by 5 points, 58-53. ZHAO lost more ground in the third end with scores of 10-7-9, while KWAK had her weakest end of the final at 9-9-9. KWAK led 85-79. ZHAO was almost perfect in the last end with 10-9-10, but it was too late. KWAK scored 8-10-10 to win the Final 113-108!

A la deuxième volée, le Français a tiré 9-10-10 pour élever à 2 points son avantage sur l’archer indien, 56-54 à mi-parcours. TALUKDAR a fait une superbe remontée à la troisième volée avec 30 points. Il n’était mené que d’un point (83-84) avant les trois dernières flèches, et a conclu le match avec 10-9-8. Sous les encouragements soutenus de son entraîneur, GIROUILLE n’a pas craqué: 10-9-10, victoire 113-110 pour le jeune Français qui conserve ainsi sa troisième place de l’an dernier!

3rd place: YUN Ok-Hee (KOR) vs Berengere SCHUH (FRA)YUN is a current team world champion. She was team Olympic champion in 2008 where she also won the individual bronze med-al. Moreover, she is the only woman to have won four World Cup stages! Berengere SCHUH (FRA) has been a consistent top archer during the last decade. She was indoor world champion in 2003, European outdoor champion in 2008 and won the team bronze in Beijing. YUN beat SCHUH twice in 2009, in Shanghai and Antalya, both times by a very small margin. Berengere SCHUH was probably very hungry for revenge!

SCHUH shot first with 9-9-9 for a total of 27 in the first end. YUN scored 9-10-10 to take a 2-point lead. The French archer shot a little better in the second end — 8-10-10, and recovered one point to trail YUN 55-56. The wind was swirling as the archers began the third end. Berengere shot 9-9-8 and YUN 10-9-10. YUN led 85-81. The French archer was not able to recover from her 4-point disadvantage, with 8-8-9 for her final three arrows. The Korean shot 9-9-9. YUN won the match 112-106!

Compound Men1st place: Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) vs Sergio PAGNI (ITA) Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) is an archer with many individual achievements, including second place at the 2007 World Cup Final in Dubai. At only 23, he has already won the team world champi-onships four times! Earlier in the day, in the Copenhagen semifinal match, he had shot a perfect score of 120 points with eight x10s, setting a new world record in the compound men’s division! As for Sergio PAGNI (ITA), he was the only archer who had won four World Cup stages! He finished 4th at the last World Cup Final.

YUN a déjà battu SCHUH à deux reprises en 2009, en finale à Shanghai et en quarts de finale à Antalya. Elle s’est chaque fois imposée de très peu, et Bérengère avait certainement soif de revanche!

La Française a tiré la première dans ce match, 9-9-9 pour un total de 27 à la première volée. Avec un 9 suivi de deux 10, YUN a pris 2 points d’avance. SCHUH a récupéré un point à la volée suivante, en tirant 8-10-10 contre 10-9-8 à son adversaire. YUN menait 56-55 à mi-parcours. Un vent tourbillonnant s’est levé sur le canal alors que les archères entamaient leur troisième volée. Bérengère a tiré 9-9-8 et YUN 10-9-10 pour mener 85-81. L’ar-chère française n’est pas parvenue à compenser son retard. Ses dernières flèches ont été 8-8-9, alors que la Coréenne a fait 9-9-9. YUN a gagné le match 112-106 pour s’emparer de la troisième place!

The first end saw both archers shoot 10-10-9 for a tie at 29-29. GELLENTHIEN looked disappointed with his score of 29 in the second end, even though it was enough to take the lead (58-57) over PAGNI, who shot 10-9-9. The Italian came back strongly in the third end with 30 points, while GELLENTHIEN scored “only” 29 again. The two were tied at 87-87 with three arrows to go. GEL-LENTHIEN opened with an 8. He looked disgusted, probably antici-pating that the mistake would cost him the gold. PAGNI shot a 10, followed by a 10 by the American archer. Then PAGNI scored a 9. GELLENTHIEN still had a chance, but he scored “only” a 9 on his last arrow. With a 9 on his final arrow, the Italian clinched the vic-tory by just one point, 115-114. PAGNI was the World Cup winner in compound!

GELLENTHIEN admitted that, “To be honest, a lot of the joy of being the new match world record holder in my semifinal disap-peared when I had that one bad arrow in the final. That one bad shot was enough for Sergio to beat me. Still, since the competition format will change next year, maybe I will keep this world record forever!”

3rd place: Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) vs Patrizio HOFER (SUI)Patrizio HOFER (SUI) is the only archer to have competed in all 16 World Cup competitions that have been held. He was the runner-up at the World Cup Final last year. Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) was the winner of the 2007 World Cup Final and won a team bronze at the Ulsan World Championships this year. These two archers have met three times at World Cup events, in 2006, 2007 and 2008. HOFER

won the first and last time, and JIMENEZ the second. The matches were very close every time.

In this match, Jorge JIMENEZ started in perfect fashion with three 10s to lead HOFER 30-28. HOFER was not going to let the match go and came back in the second end with his own perfect score of 30. Meanwhile, JIMENEZ scored the exact same points as HOFER had in the previous end—the two archers were tied at 58-58 at the halfway point. HOFER shot another perfect end with 10-10-10, to which JIMENEZ answered with 9-10-10. HOFER led by just 1 point with three arrows to go, 88-87. JIMENEZ opened with a 10, followed by another 10 by HOFER. The 2007 champion then

Vu son air dégoûté, il a certainement compris à ce moment-là que son erreur allait lui coûter le titre. PAGNI a enchaîné avec un 10, suivi d’un 10 de l’Américain. Puis l’Italien a tiré un 9. GELLEN-THIEN avait encore une chance, mais n’a tiré “que” 9 à sa dernière flèche. Avec un tir dans le cercle de 9, Sergio PAGNI a remporté la Coupe du Monde pour un point, 115-114!

GELLENTHIEN a déclaré après la finale que «honnêtement, une grande partie de ma joie d’être le nouveau détenteur du record du monde du match après la demi-finale a disparu quand j’ai tiré cette seule mauvaise flèche qui m’a fait perdre contre Sergio. Mais comme le format de la compétition va changer l’année prochaine, je garderai pour toujours ce record du monde!»

Il a terminé deuxième de la Finale l’année passée. Quant au Salvadorien Jorge JIMENEZ, il a remporté la Finale de 2007 ainsi qu’une médaille de bronze par équipe au Mondiaux d’Ulsan cette année. Poulies FemmesGrande finale: Camilla SOEMOD vs Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) Le Danemark a sa représentante dans cette catégorie, en la per-sonne de Camilla SOEMOD! Celle-ci a retrouvé une très bonne forme après son titre aux Championnats d’Europe 2006. Elle a gagné l’étape de Coupe du Monde de Shanghai cette année et est passée tout près d’une médaille aux Championnats du Monde, où elle a terminé 4e. Pour sa part, la Vénézuélienne a connu ses plus grandes réussites avec des victoires aux étapes de Coupe du

She was back this year in stellar form with a win in Shanghai and came close to a medal at the world championships, finishing 4th. The best achievements for Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN) were her victories at the World Cup stages in Boe 2008 and Antalya 2009.

This gold medal final featured these two archers who had al-ready competed against each other this year in Antalya. GUEDEZ had won 107-106. SOEMOD opened the match in Copenhagen with two 8s and a 9 in the first end for a total of 25, allowing GUE-DEZ to take the lead with 9-10-8, 27-25. Both archers shot the exact same scores in the second end (9-10-9). GUEDEZ still lead by 2 points, 55-53. GUEDEZ was unable to maintain her lead in the third end. She shot 9-9-9, while SOEMOD came back with 10-9-10 for a tie, 82-82. SOEMOD shot first in the last end. She opened with a 9, soon matched by GUEDEZ. The Danish champion followed with an 8, while GUEDEZ had a 9. The final arrow would decide the gold medallist. SOEMOD shot an 8, opening the door for GUEDEZ who needed at least an 8 for the victory. The archer from Venezuela did just that to win the gold medal, 108-107! It is the first victory for Venezuela in a World Cup Final or World Championships!

3rd place: Ivana BUDEN (CRO) vs Nicky HUNT (GBR) The Croatian has progressively been on top of this category over the last two years. She was 4th at the World Cup Final in Lausanne

last year and was on the podium at three World Cup stages. She also won bronze in field archery at the World Games last July. Nicky HUNT (GBR) was the winner of the World Cup stage 2 in Porec and has had her best season ever this year. These two archers had already met this year at the World Cup stage 2 in Porec. HUNT was the winner 113-111, and BUDEN probably wanted to take revenge here!

In their final for the bronze medal, BUDEN and HUNT both scored 29 in their first end. Nicky HUNT had an 8 in the second end, which cost her 2-points against her opponent. BUDEN led 58-56

GUEDEZ était donc toujours en tête pour 2 points, 55-53. Mais elle n’est pas parvenue à maintenir son niveau par la suite. Son score de 9-9-9 a permis à SOEMOD (10-9-10) de revenir à égalité, 82-82. La Danoise a tiré la première dans la dernière volée. Elle a décoché un 9 vite égalisé par GUEDEZ. La championne lo-cale a enchaîné avec un 8, contre 9 pour GUEDEZ. La victoire allait se jouer sur la dernière flèche! SOEMOD a tiré un 8. GUEDEZ, qui devait faire au moins aussi bien pour remporter le match, a profité de cette belle ouverture! L’archère vénézuélienne a tiré un 8, score final 108-107! Le Venezuela tient là sa première victoire dans une finale de Coupe ou Championnat du Monde!

Mixed TeamsThis year’s spectacular Archery World Cup Final in Copenhagen concluded with two mixed team matches. In Copenhagen, the Dan-ish recurve and compound teams welcomed the two best mixed teams of the year, China and Italy, selected from the four World Cup stages held in 2009. In the recurve category, the Danish pair of CHRISTIANSEN/CASPERSEN lost to China’s ZHAO/YU, while in compound, SOEMOD/DAMSBO beat PAGNI/ANASTASIO from Italy.

It is the last time that FITA will stage a mixed team event as an exhibition. From 2010 on, the mixed team category will be officially included in the programme of all the World Archery competitions.

he World Archery Indoor Championships 2009 took place on 4–8 March at the impressive

Sports Arena in Rzeszow (POL). There were 413 participants (338 athletes and 75 officials) from 37 countries. Berengere SCHUH (FRA) broke the re-curve women world record in qualifications, while the compound men’s team from the USA made the first perfect score in the gold final (world record)!

he World Archery Youth Championships 2009 took place on 12–19 July in Ogden, Utah (USA).

The finals took place in the Lindquist Baseball Sta-dium with the top archers of the 619 participants (444 athletes and 175 officials) from 62 countries. Qualifications and eliminations were played at We-ber State University.

he Archery World Cup 2009 had four qualifying stages in Santo Domingo (DOM), Porec (CRO),

Antalya (TUR) and Shanghai (CHN). The first three were covered in the last edition of the Target maga-zine. On 4-9 August, stage 4 in Shanghai had 278 participants (201 athletes and 77 officials) from 33 countries. Many matches were truly decisive for the qualifications to the Final in Copenhagen (DEN). For instance CHEN Wenyuan (CHN) eliminated OH Jin-Hyek (KOR) from the race, while Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) had to beat Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) and An-astasia ANASTASIO (ITA) to clinch a berth in a World Cup Final “at home”. Congratulations to the medallists in Shanghai:

ongratulations on winning two gold medals in compound at the World

Championships in Ulsan! How do you explain this great success? Thank you! I had set the goal for myself to win the World Championships, but the desire to win is not enough, of course. I trained a lot towards this goal, however the merit is not only mine: my entourage played a large role in my performance, especially my coaches, who supported me and helped me in everything. My success is also the product of my in-ternational experience. In 2007, at the Leipzig World Championships, I was lacking international experi-ence. After winning the semifinal, I did not shoot to my full potential in the final and had to settle for silver.

Could you describe your training?My training starts with conditioning and general physical training. Then, I do special exercises with the bow, like shooting from various distances at dif-ferent targets. During the summer, I like to shoot at 90 metres. I try to swim whenever I have the op-portunity. And every year, after the end of the sum-mer season, I train with a recurve bow. When I’m at home, I train five days a week for about four hours and if I have the time, twice a day. Before the international competi-tions I train with the Russian compound team in cycles of four or five days—we train twice a day for three or four days and then rest for one day. During these training camps I also do exercises for general physical conditioning as well as special shooting.

Je m’étais fixé comme objectif de gagner les championnats du monde. Mais l’envie de gagner ne suffit pas, évidemment! Je me suis bien sûr beau-coup entraînée, mais je ne porte pas tout le mérite de cette victoire: mon entourage a joué un grand rôle, notamment mes entraîneurs, qui m’ont soute-nue et aidée à tous les niveaux. Mon succès d’Ulsan est aussi le fruit de l’expérience internationale que j’ai acquise. En 2007, aux Championnats du Monde de Leipzig, je manquais d’expérience. Après ma vic-toire en demi-finale, j’avais tiré en dessous de mes capacités lors de la finale, et j’avais dû me contenter de la médaille d’argent.

What is the support given to compound archery in Russia? Compound is less developed than recurve in most parts of Russia. Because compound is not an Olympic discipline, the local authori-ties are not willing to spend financial resources on its develop-ment. As a consequence, support and renumeration for compound archers are significantly lower than that given to recurve archers.

What motivates you to compete internationally? I like to shoot archery, and I like to win! I also enjoy travelling to dif-ferent countries, meeting sportsmen from other nations and shar-ing our respective experiences.

How did you start archery? I shot with a gun for a few years and entered the Russian State Academy of Physical Education, in the Faculty of the shooting dis-

Quand je suis chez moi, je m’entraîne cinq jours par semaine environ quatre heures, deux fois par jour si j’ai le temps. Avant les compétitions internationales, je m’entraîne avec l’équipe na-tionale russe par cycles de quatre ou cinq jours - les trois ou quatre premiers jours, l’équipe s’entraîne deux fois par jour, et le dernier jour on se repose. Je fais aussi des exercices de condition physique et de tir.

Quel est le soutien accordé au tir à poulies en Russie? Dans plusieurs régions de Russie, l’arc à poulies est moins dé-veloppé que l’arc classique. Comme l’arc à poulies n’est pas une discipline olympique, les autorités locales ne veulent pas soutenir financièrement son développement. Par conséquent, le soutien aux archers à poulies et leur rémunération sont bien moindres que ceux qu’on offre aux archers classiques.

Qu’est-ce qui te plaît le plus dans la compétition internationale? J’aime le tir à l’arc et j’aime gagner! J’ai aussi beaucoup de plaisir à voyager de par le monde, à rencontrer des archers d’autres pays et à partager nos expériences.

ciplines. In Moscow, I didn’t have any opportunities to shoot with a gun, so I decided to do archery instead. I started with a recurve bow, but after 8 months, one week before the competitions, my coach gave me a compound bow. I won the competition and this is how I started to shoot in the compound division.

What do you do outside of archery?I’m completing a Master’s Degree at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism, majoring in “Sport and the Methods of Preparation of Athletes”. Now I devote almost all my time to archery. When I’m not training, I like to meet friends and read books.

What do you think of the Hit/Miss system that will be introduced next year?I think it will be interesting and spectacular. Up until now, I really liked the format of the competitions for students, like the Sum-mer Universiade and the World University Championships. I think the new system will make the outcome of the competitions less predictable. Overall, archery should become more dynamic and interesting for spectators and more attractive for the media.

How are you going to adapt to the new system?Whenever changes are made in the rules for international archery, the Russian national competitions will adapt to them. This happens periodically and archers adjust to the changes rather quickly. Because of that, I don’t think there will be any particular problem with adapting.

What are your goals for your career in general and for 2010? Just like many other sportsmen, I would like to win an Olympic gold and I hope that compound will become an Olympic discipline. As for the next season, it is hard to guess what will happen and what the results will be. I would like to break the world record in the FITA Round, to win medals at all the World Cup stages and, finally, to win the World Cup Final!

Comment as-tu découvert le tir à l’arc?J’ai fait du tir au pistolet pendant quelques années, et je suis en-trée à l’Académie d’Etat d’Education Physique, à la Faculté des disciplines de tir. Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de faire du tir au pistolet à Moscou, alors je me suis mise au tir à l’arc. J’ai commencé avec un arc classique, mais après 8 mois, une semaine avant une com-pétition, mon entraîneur m’a donné un arc à poulies. J’ai gagné la compétition, et c’est comme ça que j’ai commencé à tirer avec un arc à poulies!

Que fais-tu en dehors du tir à l’arc?Je prépare un Master à l’Université d’Etat pour l’Education Phy-sique, le Sport, la Jeunesse et le Tourisme, dans la section «Sport et méthodes de préparation des athlètes». En dehors de ça, je consacre presque tout mon temps au tir à l’arc. Quand je ne m’en-traîne pas, j’aime retrouver des amis ou lire des livres.

Que penses-tu du nouveau format de compétition «Hit/Miss» qui entrera en vigueur l’année prochaine?Je pense que ce format sera intéressant et spectaculaire. Jusqu’à maintenant, j’aimais beaucoup le format des compétitions pour étudiants, comme les Universiades ou les Championnats du Monde Universitaires. Je pense que le nouveau système rendra l’issue de la compétition moins prévisible, et que le tir à l’arc va devenir plus dynamique et intéressant pour les spectateurs, et plus attrayant pour les médias.

Comment vas-tu t’adapter au nouveau format?Quand des changements sont apportés au règlement du tir à l’arc international, le programme des compétitions nationales de Russie les intègre aussi. Cela arrive de temps en temps, et les archers s’y adaptent relativement vite. A mon avis il n’y aura pas de problèmes d’adaptation.

Quel sont tes objectifs pour ta carrière en général et pour 2010?Comme beaucoup d’autres athlètes, j’aimerais gagner une médaille d’or olympique, j’espère donc que l’arc à poulies deviendra bientôt une discipline olympique! Quant à la saison prochaine, difficile de prédire ce qui va se passer et quels seront les résultats. J’espère battre le record du monde de l’Epreuve FITA, gagner des médailles aux quatre épreuves de Coupe du Monde et enfin gagner la Finale!

Copenhagen! How did you celebrate this victory? Thanks a lot! I had to celebrate such a result with my friends. I considered it a duty to celebrate with the peo-ple that were around me while I was training. It was something more like a group victory, not only mine.

Did you receive any special honours in your country? And what about the media impact? My city of Montecatini Terme and the Mayor are en-thusiastic about the result, even though the Italian Olympic Committee does not take this event into consideration (it considers only World Champion-ships and Continental medals). Local newspapers reported my victory and still are writing about me.

How hard did you work to achieve this?I have worked hard, but I consider practicing archery a pleasure. I enjoy it and I need it! I’ve grown up with archery, I had been competing in international tour-naments for several years, then I had some good results and now, I have won four of the last eight World Cup Stages, plus the Final in Copenhagen! It’s a great achievement for me—a big step forward—but it’s absolutely not the end! I need to look forward to something. I’m not done with the hard work—I have only just started!

Obviously, victory at the highest level requires good preparation. Could you describe your training?My method is simple. I train according to a methodi-cal process that includes technical separation into

Quel a été l’impact de ta victoire dans ton pays?Les habitants de ma ville, Montecatini Terme, et notre maire sont très heureux de mon résultat, même si le Comité Olympique Italien ne le prend pas en consi-dération (seules les médailles des championnats du monde et championnats continentaux sont prises en compte). Les journaux locaux ont relaté ma victoire et continuent à me consacrer des articles.

Comment t’es-tu préparé pour la Finale de Coupe du Monde?J’ai travaillé dur, mais l’entraînement au tir à l’arc est un plaisir. J’adore ça et j’en ai besoin! J’ai grandi avec le tir à l’arc, je participe à des tournois interna-tionaux depuis plusieurs années et j’ai commencé à avoir de bons résultats. J’ai gagné quatre des huit dernières étapes de Coupe du Monde plus la Finale à Copenhague! C’est une grande réussite, un grand pas en avant pour moi, mais je ne vais pas m’arrêter là! J’ai besoin d’avoir un objectif. Je n’ai pas fini de travailler — au contraire, ça ne fait que commencer!

La victoire à ce niveau demande une bonne préparation. Quelle est ta technique?Ma méthode est simple. Je m’entraîne suivant un processus méthodique qui divise le mouvement

individual parts. After that, I make a lot of different shots to find the little adjustments that work for me. It’s not a process that requires long hours of training, but demands focus and systematic control over the fixed work. Also, I use my strong point, which is a great capacity for concentration. My preparation involves great mental effort and whenever I find a problem, I try to fix it! Perfection for me is to surpass myself, so I’m constantly working on the mental plan in order to amplify my strength using my weaknesses! It’s a lot of work.

Now that you have won gold at the highest level, do you have new goals for your career?Sure! Every time I fail in a tournament, it’s like a new beginning for me, because when I lose I realise how much work I have to do!

How did you start archery?My father brought me to archery. I was not happy the first time, but after some training I saw the beauty of the fusion between the man and his mind... and now I love this game!

You travelled to the four World Cup stage events this year, plus the World Championships and the World Cup Final. What do you do outside of archery? How do you manage to travel so often?Well, it’s very easy for me! After university, when I began travelling around the world with the archery national team, I was training in a shop near my house—one of the best places in Italy for compound. I was appreciated there and started working with Paolo BENEDET-TI—I now work at his archery shop, Armeria Benedetti; and we consider my events around the world like work for the shop! For my

As-tu de nouveaux objectifs pour ta carrière?Bien sûr! Chaque fois que je fais une mauvaise performance à un tournoi, c’est comme si je devais tout recommencer: quand je perds j’ai l’occasion de mesurer combien il me reste à travailler!

Comment as-tu commencé le tir à l’arc?C’est mon père qui m’a initié au tir à l’arc. La première fois je n’ai pas aimé, mais après quelques séances j’ai vu la beauté de la fu-sion entre l’homme et son esprit… et maintenant j’aime ce sport!

Tu as voyagé aux quatre étapes de Coupe du Monde cette année ainsi qu’aux championnats du monde et à la Finale de Coupe du Monde. Que fais-tu à côté du tir à l’arc, pour pouvoir voyager autant?Eh bien, c’est très simple! Après l’Université, j’ai commencé à voyager à travers le monde avec l’équipe nationale. family it is not easy, but my sweetheart, Pia Carmen LIONETTI, trav-els with me. With a ranking of No. 7 in the World Cup this year, she is one of the best archers in the world. Even though we travel together, it can be difficult to spend so many weeks away from home.

What do you think of the evolution of archery since you started competing internationally?It’s difficult to say: I started in 2001 and I made my international debut in 2004, so for me it is a great archery world with World Cup and world events. I know archery was very different in the past, but I like to live in the present for archery!!

What is your opinion on the World Cup? I prefer the World Cup to the regular events and have high hopes for the future! The World Cup requires a lot of people and hard work. I really appreciate the work of all these persons that only the international archers know. They are the heart of the archery world and I hope they will keep up the good work.

What do you think of the Hit/Miss and the set system competition format that will be introduced next year? Well, we have to try it first. I suppose the level will increase and it will become less common for high-level archers to lose a match on a single bad arrow. But we have to consider the changes from an archer’s point of view: you can change the rules and the target, but the game remains the same—shoot well, shoot hard! At least, I hope these changes will help increase the media interest and the number of visitors on the FITA website and on the field!

How are you going to adapt to the new system?Well, for me, archery is not all about the target. The real thing is, the archer will have to make the change, so the game will still be the same!

Que penses-tu de l’évolution du tir à l’arc depuis tes débuts en compétition internationale?C’est difficile à dire: j’ai commencé en 2001 et j’ai fait mes débuts internationaux en 2004, alors pour moi le monde du tir à l’arc est beau, avec sa Coupe du Monde et ses compétitions mondiales. Je sais que le tir à l’arc était très différent avant, mais j’aime vivre dans le présent de notre sport!!

Que penses-tu de la Coupe du Monde? Je préfère la Coupe du Monde aux autres épreuves et j’ai de grands espoirs pour l’avenir! La Coupe du Monde nécessite beaucoup de personnel et beaucoup de travail. J’apprécie vraiment le travail de toutes ces personnes que les archers internationaux sont les seuls à connaître. Ces gens sont le moteur du tir à l’arc et j’espère qu’ils vont continuer sur cette voie.

Que penses-tu du nouveau système de sets et du Hit/Miss qui sera introduit en compétition l’année prochaine? Eh bien, il faut d’abord que je l’essaie. Je pense que le niveau va augmenter et qu’il arrivera moins souvent qu’un archer d’élite perde un match à cause d’une seule mauvaise flèche. Mais si l’on regarde ça du point de vue des archers, on a beau changer le règlement et la cible, le jeu reste le même: tirer bien et fort! Au moins, j’espère que ces changements vont contribuer à élever l’intérêt médiatique et le nombre de visiteurs sur le site de la FITA et sur les terrains de tir!

Comment vas-tu t’adapter aux changements?Pour moi, le tir à l’arc ne se réduit pas à la cible. En fait, les archers devront s’adapter au changement, et le jeu restera le même!

Copenhagen! How did you celebrate it? Thank you for the congratulations. The celebration started in Copenhagen with my Latino friends and went on with a welcome from my friends and family at the Caracas Airport in Venezuela. I want to thank them all for the support they gave me!

What was the impact of your victory in your country? The media covered the news of my victory. A press conference was organised at the Ministry for Sports, which was attended by the Minister and the writ-ten press, the radio and national television. I was also invited to some regional radio and television programmes.

At 28, you have achieved your first victory at the highest level. How do you explain it? I have been practicing this beautiful sport for 10 years. I started preparing for the World Cup Final in Venezu-ela. My coach Alirio DURAN developed a strategy to help me compete successfully in a major event. We also worked on my adaptation to the competition scene. The location of the finals was completely un-usual, since it was to be shot in the historic canal of Nyhavn. This promised to be really impressive!

I have been working very hard from the begin-ning in order to achieve what has turned into a major victory for me and my coach, my federation and my country. In the last five years, especially after finish-ing 2nd at the 2004 European Grand Prix in Antalya (Turkey), I realised I have the potential to achieve something big in this sport. In 2008, I won the World

Quel a été l’impact de ta victoire dans ton pays? Ma victoire a été relatée dans les médias. Une conférence de presse a été organisée au Ministère des sports en présence de la ministre. Des repré-sentants de la presse écrite, de la radio et de la té-lévision nationale y ont assisté. J’ai aussi été invitée à des programmes de radio et de télévision locales.

Comment expliques-tu cette première victoire au plus haut niveau, que tu viens de remporter à 28 ans? Je pratique notre beau sport depuis 10 ans. J’ai commencé à me préparer pour la Finale de Coupe du Monde au Venezuela. Mon entraîneur, Alirio DU-RAN, a développé une technique pour me permettre de réussir dans les grandes compétitions. On a aussi travaillé pour que je m’adapte au cadre de l’épreuve. L’emplacement des finales était vraiment inhabituel, puisqu’il s’agissait du canal de Nyhavn à Copenhague. Ça promettait d’être impressionnant! J’ai travaillé très dur depuis le début pour obtenir ce qui est aujourd’hui une victoire majeure pour ma carrière mais aussi pour mon entraîneur, ma fé-dération et mon pays. Au cours des cinq dernières années, et surtout après avoir terminé 2e au Grand Prix Européen 2004 à Antalya (Turquie), je me suis rendu compte que j’avais le potentiel de réaliser quelque chose de grand dans le tir à l’arc. Cup Stage 4 in Boe (France) and this year I won the World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya. Thanks to these results I gained confidence winning finals and now I am near the top in the World Cup Ranking. My main motivation is to always stay among the best in the world. This encourages me to carry on the hard work.

What are your training conditions like in Venezuela?My coach trains me six times a week according to the schedule of my classes. He uses a technico-stragegic method, physical and mental, depending on where I stand. The conditions where I train are ideal. We have really beautiful archery facilities. What’s more, I can count on the support of my Federation and the Ministry for Sports to cover my travel expenses and the cost of the preparation for the events I compete in.

Do you have new goals, now that you have claimed victory at the highest level?Of course!!!! Now is the real beginning. I want to be among the group of archers that managed to shoot 1400 points, to win at the World Championships and to stay among the best in the world in the various international events. I also hope to compete in the Olympic Games if compound is officially approved as an Olympic sport or exhibition. It’s the major dream of every athlete, and I’m no exception.

How did you start in archery?In 1997, when I was a high school student, I heard about archery and asked some boy schoolmates about it, but they told me the ar-chery club didn’t accept girls (she laughs). In 1999, thanks to my persistence and interest, I, along with four girl friends, managed to become members of the club. Now, I’m the only one remaining. The year I started, I took part in my first National Games. Despite being very new to the sport, I managed to place 5th! That encour-aged me to continue on and train very hard.

Quelles sont les conditions d’entraînement au Venezuela?Mon entraîneur programme six jours d’entraînement par semaine en fonction de mes horaires de cours. Il utilise une méthode technico-stratégique, physique et mentale, selon mon état. Mes conditions d’entraînement sont idéales. Nous avons de très belles installations de tir à l’arc. De plus, je peux compter sur le soutien de ma Fédération et du Ministère des sports pour ce qui est de financer mes frais de voyages et la préparation pour les compéti-tions auxquelles je participe.

Après cette victoire au plus haut niveau, as-tu de nouveau objectifs?Bien sûr!!!! C’est maintenant que tout commence. Je veux rentrer dans le cercle des archères ayant réussi 1400 points, gagner aux championnats du monde et rester parmi les meilleures mondiales lors des tournois internationaux. J’espère aussi participer aux Jeux Olympiques si l’arc à poulies devient discipline olympique ou exhi-bition. C’est le rêve de tout athlète, je ne fais pas exception.

Qu’est-ce qui te pousse à mener une carrière internationale?Ma plus grande motivation est de rester parmi les meilleures du monde. Cela m’encourage à continuer de travailler dur.

Comment as-tu commencé le tir à l’arc?En 1997, quand j’étais au lycée, j’ai entendu parler du tir à l’arc et j’ai discuté avec des garçons parmi mes camarades, qui m’ont dit que le club de tir n’acceptait pas les filles (rires). En 1999, grâce à ma per-sévérance et à mon grand intérêt, j’ai réussi à rentrer dans ce club en

You travelled to all four World Cup Stages this year, the World Championships and the World Cup Final. What do you do outside of archery and how do you manage to train and travel so often?I’m studying to become a pre-school (kindergarden) teacher, but because of all these international commitments, I have had to take a semester off in order to focus on the major archery events. For-tunately, my dedication is bearing fruit.

What do you think of the new Hit/Miss competition format that will be introduced in 2010? How will it affect archery?This change looks interesting to me. In 2007, I competed in the first mixed team event in Dover (Great Britain), where the scor-ing was based on the Hit/Miss principle. I was paired with Vlado SIGAUSKAS from Lithuania—we won the competition. Actually, I enjoyed this format! It was very interesting, apart from being a good way to make recurve and compound more different in an effort to have compound be part of the Olympic programme. Time will tell if the new competition format works well or if adjustments have to be made. But it’s definitely enjoyable and easy to under-stand for spectators.

How are you going to adapt to the new system?I will train with the new bull’s-eye and practice enough at such a distance in order to get familiar with it quickly and change the mental approach.

Que penses-tu du nouveau format Hit/Miss qui sera introduit en 2010? Ce changement me paraît intéressant. En 2007, j’ai participé à la première épreuve mixte à Douvres (Grande-Bratagne), où les scores étaient établis selon le principe du Hit/Miss. J’ai fait équipe avec le Lituanien Vlado SIGAUSKAS, et on a gagné la compétition. J’ai adoré ce format! C’était très intéressant, en plus d’être une bonne manière de différencier l’arc classique des poulies dans le but de faire introduire l’arc à poulies aux Jeux Olympiques. L’avenir dira si ce format de compétition est satisfaisant ou s’il faudra faire des changements. En tout cas, il est très agréable et facile à suivre pour les spectateurs.

Comment vas-tu t’adapter au nouveau système?Je vais m’entraîner à faire des hit et pratiquer depuis la distance réglementaire pour m’adapter rapidement et changer l’approche mentale.

Cup event in Antalya and the World University Games. She recently won the Olympic Congress video contest which won her a trip to attend the Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. Here is what she has to say about Olympism, her experience in Copenhagen and archery.

Congratulations Vanessa on winning the video contest about the future of the Olympic Games! First of all could you tell the main message of your video for the readers who haven’t seen it?The overall main message of my video is that the future of the Olympics is bright! I first talk about the Olympic Games continuing to be the world’s premier sporting event. I also envision athletes from devel-oping countries—not only participating in a wider variety of sports but even setting higher athletic standards for other athletes in the world. I look at the future of youth in competitive sport and foresee that the Youth Olympic Games will be a valuable way for young athletes to embrace Olympic Values and Olympism from an early age. I then talk about the world being united through different means of com-munication and broadcasting the Olympic Games. And finally, I mentioned that I believe the Olympic Games will eventually be hosted by developing na-tions that have yet to welcome the world.

Tout d’abord, peux-tu résumer le message de ta vidéo pour nos lecteurs?Le message principal, c’est que les Jeux Olym-piques ont un bel avenir devant eux! Je prévois d’abord que les Jeux Olympiques vont rester le plus grand événement sportif du monde. Je prédis aussi que les athlètes des pays en développement vont non seulement participer à un plus grand nombre d’épreuves, mais qu’en matière de performances, ils vont élever les standards par rapport aux autres athlètes. Je m’intéresse à l’avenir de la jeunesse dans le sport de compétition et prédis que les Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse seront une bonne ma-nière pour que les athlètes embrassent déjà très jeunes les valeurs olympiques et l’olympisme. Je parle ensuite de la possibilité de réunir le monde à travers les différents moyens de communication et la diffusion des Jeux Olympiques. Please describe your experience in Copenhagen. How did it inspire you as an athlete and student? It was an incredible experience to be in the room with some of the world’s most influential people and individuals who have contrib-uted so much to the world of sport. All the people at the Congress were looking for ways to better the Olympic Movement, which was both a humbling and inspiring experience. As an athlete, I was inspired to really work hard to achieve my Olympic dreams. I saw how much work the IOC, NOCs, and IFs were putting into the Olym-pic Movement and it made me want to be part of the Movement even more. As a student, I was first inspired to study very hard so that maybe one day I could be on the Athlete’s Commission or other sector of the IOC.

Throughout the Olympic Congress, I tried my best to represent young archers around the world. And during one of the break-out sessions, I had an opportunity to speak in front of many dele-gates and IOC Members, where I talked about the positive values the sport of archery instilled in my life. I really hope I was able to promote the sport in any way I could. Speaking during that discussion session was definitely one of the highlights of my time in Copenhagen!

How did you come up with the idea of the developing countries?I have always been inspired by President Jacques ROGGE, who has mentioned many times that he would like to see the Olympic Games being held by developing countries. I’d love to see it one day! The Games aren’t just for a certain number of countries in the world, but there are 205 National Olympic Committees, yet only a number of them have hosted the Games.

I think the choice for Rio de Janeiro as host of the 2016 Olympic Games was a great one! It’s the first time the Olympic Games will be held in South America and I believe it’s a huge step in the right direc-tion for the IOC. I look forward to hopefully competing there as well!

What can you say about developing countries in archery?Archery is setting an example for other Olympic sports. We’ve seen such a huge growth in the number of countries participating in archery in every corner of the world—and the numbers still con-tinue to grow! The great thing about archery is that you don’t need expensive facilities to take part in the sport, which means there are minimal barriers to participation!

Of course, bows at the Olympic level of competition can be ex-pensive. But I think the most important spill-over effect of the Olym-pic Games is a growing participation in physical activity at the grass-roots level. And at this level, archery equipment doesn’t cost much.

What is your opinion on the Youth Olympic Games?I think it’s such a great opportunity to get youth interested in com-petitive sport—it gives an attainable goal! I’m excited to hear about all the educational programs that the IOC has put in place for the athletes at the Youth Olympic Games. The youth will be given op-portunities to experience Olympic Values and Olympism.

J’ai vu combien travaillent le CIO, les Comités Nationaux Olympiques et les Fédérations Sportives Inter-nationales, et cela m’a donné encore plus envie de faire partie du Mouvement Olympique. Cela m’encourage avant tout à faire de bonnes études pour faire peut-être partie un jour de la Commis-sion des Athlètes ou d’un autre secteur du CIO.

Au cours du Congrès Olympique, j’ai essayé de représenter au mieux les jeunes archers du monde entier. Et pendant une des sessions en groupe restreint, j’ai pris la parole devant de nombreux délégués et membres du CIO. J’ai parlé des choses positives que le tir à l’arc m’apporte dans la vie. The 1988 Olympic champion Jay BARRS (USA) expressed his fear about youth participation in such big events: “If they have already won everything at the junior level, if they move to senior categories and don’t win straight away, they might lose their motivation.” As a young archer, what would you answer to that?I think it’s important to give youth many opportunities to participate at elite levels of sport. And the Youth Olympic Games is providing another opportunity for them to participate. Although there is that uncertainty of whether youth, who are successful at a young age, will continue in their sport, I’d rather see the youth be given these opportunities than not. Also, the IOC is putting in place educational programs to teach about values other than winning and being

“successful.” I think these efforts will help youth stay in sport and stay motivated for senior level competition.

What do you think of the evolution of archery, with the creation of the World Cup and the adoption of new rules at the last FITA Congress? I think FITA has been making great efforts such as World Cup and new match play formats in order to gain more media coverage and audiences. Archery is again setting an example for other Olym-pic sports—showing that it can evolve as a sport. Not only World Cups and new match play formats, but also Archery TV and posting video coverage of international tournaments on YouTube!

How did you start archery? Is it a family tradition?I’m the first in my family to get involved with archery. In 2004, I was visiting family and friends in South Korea while the Athens Olympics were taking place. Instead of sightseeing, I was stuck inside watching TV because the weather wasn’t very good. I saw PARK Sung-Hyun win the individual gold medal, as well as shoot a perfect 10 to clinch the team gold medal for South Korea! It wasn’t so much her incredible display of athleticism, but her composure and confidence that really inspired me to be the kind of person she was. I stopped spending money during my vacation in Korea because I was planning to buy a bow as soon as I got home. I had never shot an arrow before that, and to be honest, the first time I

L’avantage du tir à l’arc, c’est que l’entraînement ne nécessite pas d’installations coûteuses, ce qui signifie que les obstacles à la pratique du tir sont minimes! Certes, les arcs de compétition d’élite sont chers. Mais je pense que les Jeux Olympiques ont entraîné une augmentation de la pratique du sport de masse. Et à ce niveau, le matériel de tir à l’arc n’est pas très cher.

Que penses-tu des Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse?Je pense que c’est une excellente manière pour que les jeunes s’intéressent au sport de compétition, en leur donnant un objectif à leur portée! Je suis très enthousiasmée par tous les programmes d’éducation que le CIO va offrir aux athlètes lors des Jeux Olym-piques de la Jeunesse. La jeunesse aura là une occasion de dé-couvrir le Mouvement Olympique et ses valeurs.

Le champion olympique 1988 Jay BARRS (USA) a exprimé ses craintes quant à la participation de la jeunesse à de telles compétitions: “Si les jeunes ont déjà tout gagné au niveau junior et qu’ils ne gagnent pas dès qu’ils arrivent dans la catégorie senior, ils risquent de perdre leur motivation.” Qu’en penses-tu, toi qui es une jeune archère?Je pense qu’il est important de donner aux jeunes beaucoup d’oc-casions de disputer des compétitions d’élite, et les Jeux Olym-piques de la Jeunesse en sont une de plus. On ne peut pas savoir si les champions juniors vont continuer la compétition, mais je pré-fère quand même qu’ils reçoivent ce type d’opportunités. De plus, le CIO est en train de mettre en place des programmes d’édu-cation pour sensibiliser à des valeurs autres que la victoire et le succès. Je pense que ces efforts vont aider les jeunes à continuer le sport et à rester motivés pour la compétition senior.

Que penses-tu de l’évolution du tir à l’arc, avec la création de la Coupe du Monde et l’adoption d’un nouveau règlement au dernier Congrès de la FITA? Je pense que la FITA fait un bon travail avec le lancement de la Coupe du Monde et l’adoption du nouveau format des matchs en sets, dans le but d’attirer plus de couverture médiatique et de public. Là encore, le tir à l’arc donne l’exemple, en montrant qu’un sport peut évoluer. L’évolution ne s’arrête pas à la Coupe du Monde et au nouveau format des matchs, il y a aussi Archery TV et la diffusion de vidéos des tournois internationaux sur YouTube!

Comment as-tu commencé le tir à l’arc? Est-ce une tradition dans ta famille?Je suis la première de ma famille à faire du tir à l’arc. En 2004, j’ai rendu visite à ma famille et mes amis en Corée du Sud pendant les Jeux Olympiques d’Athènes. Plutôt que de faire du tourisme, je suis restée enfermée devant la télé parce qu’il faisait mauvais temps. J’ai regardé PARK Sung-Hyun gagner la médaille d’or in-dividuelle et tirer un 10 pour offrir la victoire à l’équipe de Corée du Sud! Cela m’a donné envie de lui ressembler, pas tant pour les qualités athlétiques qu’elle a affichées, mais pour sa maîtrise d’elle-même et sa confiance. Je me suis mise à économiser de l’argent pendant mes vacances en Corée parce que je voulais m’acheter un arc dès mon retour au Canada. Je n’avais jamais tiré la moindre flèche. Pour être honnête, la première fois que j’ai tiré n’a pas été aussi brillante que j’avais imaginé — je me suis cogné le bras et ma flèche s’est plantée loin du centre. Mais il faut bien commencer par le début, n’est-ce pas?

Je suis une amoureuse du tir à l’arc depuis que j’ai vu PARK sur cet écran de télévision. C’est un sport tellement juste qui exige beaucoup de travail et de sacrifices et BEAUCOUP de patience, mais je n’ai jamais songé à arrêter. Le tir à l’arc fait vraiment partie de moi.

Toi qui es une Coréenne née au Canada, as-tu profité d’une manière ou d’une autre de l’excellente coréenne en tir à l’arc?J’ai eu l’occasion d’aller m’entraîner en Corée pendant 6 mois l’année passée! En 2008, aux Championnats du Monde Universi-taires à Taiwan, j’ai tiré contre CHANG Hye-Jin, l’archère classée no 1. J’ai perdu et son entraîneur m’a dit que j’avais du talent, et elle m’a donné ses coordonnées. Après mon retour au Canada, nous avons gardé contact, et elle m’a proposé de venir m’entraî-ner avec l’équipe de son université! Ça a été une expérience très enrichissante, j’ai tellement appris sur le sport: sur la manière de tirer, les techniques d’entraînement, la discipline. Mais le meilleur enseignement que j’ai reçu, c’est que je dois trouver ma propre forme — comprendre chaque aspect de ma technique, ce qui marche pour moi ou non, et surtout m’assurer que ma manière de tirer est vraiment celle qui me convient le mieux.

Pendant ton séjour en Corée, as-tu rencontré PARK Sung Hyun?Oui! Quand je m’entraînais en Corée, j’ai suivi l’équipe de mon uni-versité sur un tournoi national et là, j’ai rencontré PARK. Elle a été

shot wasn’t as glamorous as I had imagined it would be—I hit my arm and my arrow went far from the middle. But no one becomes a good archer without failure first, right?

I’ve been in love with archery ever since I saw PARK on that television screen. It’s such a straightforward sport that requires hard work, dedication, and LOTS of patience, but I’ve just never thought of stopping—archery is really part of who I am as a person.

As a Korean born in Canada, did you benefit in any way from the Korean excellence in archery?I was given the opportunity to train in Korea for 6 months this past year! When I was at the World University Archery Championships in Taiwan in 2008, I was shooting against CHANG Hye-Jin, the 1st seeded archer. After I lost, her coach said she saw talent in me and gave me her contact information. When I came back to Canada, we stayed in touch and she offered me the opportunity to come train with her university team! It was a very valuable experience and I learned so much about the sport: about form, training techniques, and discipline in the sport. But the most important thing I learned is that I need to make my form “my own”—understand every aspect of my form, what works for me and what doesn’t, and above all make sure that the way I shoot is comfortable for me.

While in Korea, did you have the opportunity to meet PARK Sung Hyun?Yes, I did! While training in South Korea this past year, I followed the university team to one of the National Tournaments, where I met Park. She was very kind! I even got to sleep at her house one night, where I went fishing with her husband, PARK Kyung-Mo, and she made me breakfast! She’s such a kind and genuine person. She later sent me a package in the mail with a couple of her national team shirts, hats, and training clothes.

Could you share with us anything special that she told you?She gave me many words of encouragement and still inspires me to be the best I can be. She really emphasized how important it is to know yourself and how you shoot. She also mentioned how important it is to keep a journal while you’re training. Since then, I write in my journal about any changes I’ve made to my form and what those changes feel like. I also write about my mental state

during that practice session—whether I was calm and relaxed or had negative thoughts. I find it really helps when you’re struggling down the road and can look back to see what worked for you in each situation.

What are your goals in archery?I hope that through archery, I can become a well-rounded indi-vidual. I hope to be the best I can be, whether that means at the top or the bottom of the rankings list. But I do hope to compete at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

What do you do outside of archery? I study Physical Education and Health at the University of Toronto. I’m involved in lots of recreational sports and enjoy playing the drums! After I graduate, I hope to get a degree in Physical Therapy. But after the Olympic Congress in Copenhagen, I realized that I’d really like to become more involved in the Olympic Movement and perhaps become an IOC member on the Athletes’ Commission.

What would you change about archery if you were on the Athletes’ Commission today? I’d just like to keep archery in the direction that it is moving! With all the positive changes we’ve seen to archery recently, I think ar-chery is moving in the right direction!

Quel genre de conseils t’a-t-elle donné?Elle m’a beaucoup encouragée et continue de m’inspirer à être la meilleure possible. Elle a souligné combien il est important de se connaître soi-même ainsi que sa technique de tir. Elle a aussi men-tionné l’importance de tenir un journal lors de l’entraînement. De-puis, j’écris dans mon journal les changements que j’apporte à ma manière de tirer et ce que je ressens quand j’applique ces chan-gements. Je note aussi mon état mental durant chaque séance d’entraînement — si j’étais tranquille et détendue ou si j’avais des pensées négatives. Je trouve que ça aide beaucoup, dans les périodes difficiles, de pouvoir voir quelles solutions avaient été trouvées dans chaque situation.

Quels sont tes objectifs en tir à l’arc?J’espère devenir une personne plus complète grâce au tir à l’arc. J’aimerais atteindre mon plein potentiel en tant qu’archère, que cela me mène au bas du classement ou sommet. Mais j’espère vraiment participer aux Jeux de Londres 2012 et à ceux de Rio en 2016.

Que fais-tu en dehors du tir à l’arc? J’étudie l’éducation physique et la santé à l’Université de Toronto. Je fais beaucoup de sport pour le plaisir et je joue de la batterie! Quand j’aurai fini mes études, j’aimerais passer un diplôme de physiothérapeute. Mais après le Congrès Olympique de Copen-hague, j’ai réalisé que j’aimerais être plus impliquée dans le Mou-vement Olympique et peut-être devenir membre du CIO dans la Commission des Athlètes.

he Beijing 2008 Olympic Games have been a big success for archery. The International

Archery Federation has just received two more proofs of this.

An average of 35 million TV viewersThe International Olympic Committee mandated an in-dependent study on the audience of the Beijing Olym-pic Games. This study made by the company Sponsor-ship Intelligence was released recently. It showed that the average minute of archery coverage was seen by at least 35.2 million viewers globally during the 91 hours of archery broadcast during the Games. This ranked archery in 10th place among the Olympic sports! The study was made over 48 selected territories, but did not include Korea. This country, that won two golds, two silvers and one bronze during the Games, would have further raised the figure for archery.

Here are some other interesting facts of this study:

In China the average minute of archery coverage was seen by 20.3 million viewers.

In China the average minute of archery cover-age was seen by 1.7% of the potential audience, while the average across all sports was 1.1%. Hence the archery average was 48% higher than the average across all sports.

In China, archery was three times in the top 5 rating of the day

Les Jeux Olympiques de Beijing 2008 ont été un grand succès pour le tir à l’arc. La Fédération In-ternationale vient d’en recevoir deux nouvelles preuves.

35 millions de téléspectateurs en moyenneLe Comité International Olympique a mandaté une étude indépendante sur l’audience des Jeux de 2008. Cette étude, réalisée par Sponsorship Intelli-gence, a été récemment publiée. Elle a montré qu’il y a eu en moyenne plus de 35 millions de téléspec-tateurs par minute sur les 91 heures de tir à l’arc retransmises durant les Jeux. Le tir à l’arc se classe au 10e rang parmi les 28 sports olympiques! L’étude a été conduite sur 48 territoires sélectionnés, mais n’a pas pris en compte la Corée. L’audience du tir à l’arc a donc été encore plus élevée qu’il ne ressort de l’étude, compte tenu du fait que la Corée a gagné deux médailles d’or, deux d’argent et une de bronze.

Voici d’autres chiffres intéressants relevés par cette étude:

The total membership has raised by 7.8% (64,809 compared to 60,091)

In the junior ranks the girls enjoyed a 11.71% increase, while the boys had 5.06%

The women had a 10.3% increase, while the men had 7.2% Overall, the female archers have had a 9.46% increase, while the male improved by 9.07%

Overall, there are 28,847 (+6.5%) youth archers and 35,962 (+9.17 %) adult archers

French archery had previously benefited from a strong growth after Sebastien FLUTE became individual Olympic Champion in 1992.

Europe and the USA have always been strong powers in the archery world. Then, it was in the 1980’s that Asia emerged as one of the strongest archery regions.

The efforts made since the end of the 1990’s to help the Americas in the development of archery and the education of coaches have started to bear fruit, as shown by the results of the last two Olympic Games. Today, several Latin-American and Canadi-an archers are among the favorites at major archery events. More and more countries from the Americas are at the foot of the international podiums. At the last World Championships, both El Salvador and Co-lombia won medals.

During the last Olympiad, FITA continued to develop new ar-chery nations and also tried to help the smaller Member Asso-ciations improve. Such Member Associations are numerous in

continents such as Africa and Oceania. Since 2000, special pro-grammes have been created in favor of these continents result-ing in great success at the 2009 World Archery Championships in Ulsan (Korea) where Africa and Oceania won medals!

Successful archers from all five continents have proved that our sport has reached a truly global dimension. However, we have to remember that there is still a lot to do. FITA and the Fondation Internationale de Développement du Tir à l’Arc (FIDTA) know that they are on the right track and plan keep up the good work to further develop the sport of archery.

he International Tournament from West and Central Africa held 6-9 August 2009 in Benin

was the first 100% African-initiative tourna-ment.

Africa has hosted international competitions in the past, such as the African Championships and the Qualifying Tournament for the Olympic Games, but the tournaments were often required by the FITA Constitution or the African Archery Federation (FAA).

The Tournoi International des Zone Ouest et Cen-tre de l‘Afrique de Tir à l’Arc (TIZOCATA, International Archery Tournament for the Western and Central re-gion of Africa) was innovative in that this competition, held 6-9 August 2009 in Cotonou (BEN), was neither constitutionally imposed nor managed by third par-ties. The project was submitted in June 2009 to the International Foundation for the Development of Ar-chery (FIDTA), who supported it financially. Moreover, the local authorities played an important role in the success of this event.

This meeting was more than just a competition. The event included the following innovations.

A training session about archery for journalists was held before the competition and the partici-pants had the opportunity to shoot a few arrows.

A training session for judges was conducted be-fore the tournament and continued in a practical way during the installation and operation of the competition.

The delegations held a brainstorming meeting to discuss the level of archery in the two regions and solutions for their development. This meet-ing opened the eyes of participants on how to organize their National Championships. It also gave them the desire to always improve.

Le tournoi international de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et Centrale du 6-9 août 2009 au Bénin était le premier d’une initiative 100% africaine.

S’il y a déjà eu des compétitions internationales en Afrique, celles-ci ont souvent été organisées à l’initiative de la FITA ou de la Fédération Africaine de Tir à l’Arc (FAA) selon des exigences statutaires ou d’instances supérieures. Ainsi le championnat d’Afrique et le Tournoi Qualificatif pour les Jeux Olympiques. Il en a été autrement du Tournoi In-ternational de Tir à l’Arc des Zone Ouest et Centre de l‘Afrique (TIZOCATA) qui s’est déroulé du 6 au 9 août 2009 au Bénin. Cette compétition n’a été ni imposée constitutionnellement ni orchestrée par des coopérants. Son projet avait été soumis en juin 2009 à la Fondation Internationale de Développe-ment du Tir à l’Arc (FIDTA), qui lui avait accordé une subvention. Les autorités locales ont aussi contribué au succès de cette manifestation.

Plus qu’une simple compétition, ce rendez-vous incluait:

Une formation des journalistes à notre sport, qui s’est tenue préalablement à la compétition. Les participants se sont essayés au tir à l’arc.

Une formation d’arbitres, qui a débuté avant le tournoi et a continué de manière pratique lors de l’installation et du déroulement de la compétition.

La compétition, qui s’est tenue au Stade de l’amitié de Cotonou et à laquelle ont pris part six pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre: le Bé-nin, le Cameroun, la Côte d’Ivoire, la Guinée, le Sénégal et le Togo.

Une réunion des délégations s’est tenue pour ré-fléchir sur le niveau du tir à l’arc dans les deux ré-gions et proposer des méthodes d’améliorations.

First 100% African International Archery Competition

Première compétition internationale purement africaine


Following the competition, Olympic Solidarity offered a techni-cal coaching course. Participants learned to manufacture ropes and arrows and then were taught the basics of training with bamboo and recurved bows. Mr André KOORLAR from the Netherlands taught the course; Mr Paul ZINSOU, FITA Devel-opement Agent for Africa, assisted him.

Six countries from Western and Central Africa took part in the competition, held at the Friendship Stadium in Cotonou: Benin, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal and Togo. They really ap-preciated these initiatives and expressed their wish that this event be held every year.

About the competition:The Olympic Solidarity expert, Mr KOORLAR, attended the competi-tion and declared that, “the event was generally well-organized. The organizers did a good job in trying to scrupulously respect the FITA rules for this type of competition.”

The composition of the national teams was as follows. There were 43 archers in total.

Benin: 7 women and 12 men (19 participants)Cameroon: 1 woman and 1 man (2 participants)Ivory Coast: 1 woman and 8 men (9 participants)Guinea: 1 woman and 4 men (5 participants)Senegal: 1 man (1 participant)Togo: 2 women and 5 men (7 participants)The competition format was a FITA round followed by elimination matches (individual/team). Some distances were adapted to the level of material and equipment. Three different types of bows were used: bamboo bow, recurve bow for training and recurve bow for competition.

Local media (radio, newspapers and TV channels) reported about the competition and the coaching course.

Cette réunion a ouvert les yeux des participants sur la manière d’organiser leurs championnats nationaux et a suscité en eux le désir de progresser. Les six délégations ont apprécié et loué l’initiative de Cotonou. Elles ont exprimé le souhait que cette organisation soit répétée tous les ans.

Un cours technique pour entraîneurs de la Solidarité Olympique a aussi soutenu ce projet. Les participants ont fabriqué des cordes, des flèches et ils ont ensuite appris les bases tech-niques de l’entraînement, tant avec l’arc en bambou qu’avec l’arc classique. M. André KOORLAR des Pays-Bas, assisté par M. Paul ZINSOU, Agent de développement FITA, ont encadré ce cours qui a suivi le tournoi.

A propos de la compétition :Selon l’expert néerlandais du cours de la Solidarité Olympique, qui a pu observer cette compétition: « En général le concours a été très bien organisé. L’organisateur a fait un bon travail en s’effor-çant de respecter scrupuleusement les règles de la FITA pour un tel tournoi ».

Le format de la compétition consistait en une épreuve FITA sui-vie de duels individuels et par équipe. Les épreuves ont eu lieu avec trois types d’arcs: l’arc en bambou, l’arc classique d’entraî-nement et l’arc classique de compétition.

Pour des raisons évidentes d’efficacité du matériel, les épreuves pour certains types d’arcs ont été tirées sur des dis-tances adaptées.

Plusieurs médias (radios, journaux et télévisions) ont couvert la compétition et le cours d’entraîneurs.
