World Bank approves funds to support Togos efforts to rehabilitateroads and drainage systems damaged by floodingThe World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today (5 th June 2013)

approved a US$14 million IDA* grant to support the Government of Togosefforts to rehabilitate roads, drains and other infrastructure, to scale-upurban services, and strengthen the capacity of institutions.

Togo, together with most countries in West Africa, suffered from heavy precipitation and floodingduring the fall of 2010 rainy season, said Madani M. Tall, World Bank Country Director for Togo. Theproposed rehabilitation works will improve access to basic services and contribute to creating jobsand supporting the Government in its efforts to build resiliency to future flooding impacts.

The funds will support the on-going Emergency Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Energy Project(EIREP). The project has two components: the first, rehabilitating infrastructure such as drains, canalsand gutters, is aimed at reducing the number of people affected by periodic flooding in low-lying poorneighborhoods of the capital city, Lom. The second component is designed to strengthen the

capacity of the institutions involved in the management and implementation of the project and thoseresponsible for delivering urban services.

Over 86,000 people were affected throughout the country, many of whom lived mainly in low-lyingpockets of Lom, said Jamal Saghir the World Bank's Director of Sustainable Development for the

Africa Region. This funding will enable the government of Togo to further expand the rehabilitation ofthe drainage system and roads while reducing the disruption of urban services.

These funds will support the rebuilding some 10 kms of drainage infrastructure in Lome and of aboutfive kilometers of secondary roads. The drainage works are expected to benefit some 48,000 peoplewhile the road upgrades will benefit as many as 27,500 people with all-season transport access.

The labor-intensive methods for drain rehabilitation to be used under the project will clearly contribute

to the livelihoods of local residents in the project neighborhoods. Moreover, the road rehabilitationefforts supported by these funds will improve and lower the cost of transportation in low-incomeneighborhoods located far from job opportunities, saidKwabena Amankwah-Ayeh, World Bank TaskTeam Leader for the project. I am pleased to continue supporting this project and the jobs andbenefits it brings to the people living in and near Togos capital city.

    3 Good News

    Ismael (4-63)

Ismael is a 7 month old baby boy from the town of Sotouboua in the Central region of Togo. hisparents are young local farmers in the region, who are only able to provide basic food and housing fortheir 1st newly born child.

At birth Ismael was born without an anus and the local hospital was unable to treat her due to thecomplicated procedures involved. At the age of 1 month he was moved to the Central Hospital in thecapital Lome after a sack like mass started growing out of his back.

Now at the age of 7 months, following three operations, the doctors have been able to remove thegrowing mass from his back. In addition, following a forth operation on the 10th June, the doctorshave been able to surgically correct his condition; allowing his body to operate correctly by creating afunctioning anus.

PDH in collaboration with the Religious Congregation of Sisters of Providence of St. Gaetan and twoof the Surgical Doctors treating Ismael have paid for the medication and operations to give Ismael anormal life. He has now recovered fully and been given the all clear by the hospital and has returnedwith his parents back to Sotouboua.

    Grace 04 69

Grace is a fourteen year old girl, from an impoverished localfamily. She is the eldest of six, and has been fortunate to receive

the support of Carolin, a former PDH volunteer, through thesponsorship program. Grace is an extremely intelligent girl, andwith the recent release of her school results, PDH is happy toreport that Grace received a mention of Assez Bien. This meansthat Grace managed to maintain an overall average of between12 and 14 out of 20. This is a truly excellent result given thedifficult circumstances her family faces everyday just to survive. When asked what she was going to do during her holidays, shetold us that she was going to use some of her sponsorship moneyto start a small holiday job of selling peanuts to try and help herfamily and contribute towards her costs for the next school year.Congratulations Grace!

    Yasmine (04-61)

Yasmine is a four year old little Muslim girl; whosefather divorced her mother 2 years ago afterconverting to Christianity. She is the only daughter offour children. In May 2011 when she was a year old,she drank caustic soda in the middle of the night whileher parents were sleeping. Immediately after theincident, she was driven to the Hospital in downtownBassar, before being transferred to the UniversityHospital Center in the city of Kara, where she wastreated for 3 months.

After originally being released from hospital, she wasoften readmitted due to repeated problems of losingconsciousness. Two or so years after the incident,Yasmine became unable to swallow solid food andmedical tests revealed she suffers from dysphagia tosolid foods. She was then transferred to the UniversityHospital Center of Lome where she has now beenhospitalized in the Pediatric Surgery centre sinceJanuary 29, 2013. Yasmine has already undergonefive surgeries on her esophagus, the fifth having takenplace on Wednesday 10

    thJuly. Unfortunately due to

her age this is the only surgery doctors are willing toperform, and it will have to be continually repeated

until she is old enough for the scarred part of the esophagus to be removed and then rejoined. Hermothers lack of funds after the divorce and supporting three other children, means they are unable toafford the continual medical bills as each operation costs 50,000 CFA, leaving little Yasmine to anuncertain fate.

    Jeannette (01-264)

Jeannette is a 45 year old, mother of three children who wasabandoned by her family. After feeling excruciating pain inher left breast in 2012; she visited the hospital in Afangnanand then the Central Hospital in Tsvi and finally SylvanusOlympio Hospital Lome for treatment. After her last visit tothe Central Hospital Sylvanus Olympio in November 2012,examinations and assessments revealed that she suffersfrom a cancerous tumor in the left breast the dimensionbeing 10 cm.

Jeannette must undergo surgery and chemotherapy at thetotal cost of 3,000,000 CFA. After the results of theexaminations, Jeannette sold all her possessions to help pay

for the treatments. Jeannette as a poor patient was referred to PDH by Sister Veronica of theCongregation of the Sisters of Providence of St. Gatan Kouv. With no financial means to pay forher surgery and chemotherapy they have enlisted the help of PDH.

    5 International Volunteer Testimonial

Before arriving at PDH I had been travelling West Africa for 3 months, visiting and exploring many countries, acclimatizing to Africa and all of itscrazy but fun quirks it has to offer. In that time I felt a little prepared forwhat Lome would be like and what volunteering in an African countrywould involve. I was wrong!

Volunteering at PDH gives you a unique insight into communities, peopleand aspects you would not normally see through the travelling eyes.Moving away from the town centre and meeting local people you start tounderstand the true poverty behind Africa, the destitution andhelplessness they experience day to day that is completelyincomprehensible to many visitors and travelers. PDH and the localvolunteers do amazing work to help these communities; whether by

providing money for medication/operations for struggling families, educating and helping young people at school or counseling HIV patients.

The country and the people here in Togo are wonderful and I will missthem greatly. I wish PDH all the best and look forward to seeing news of the opening of theAgricultural Centre later in September.

I have just completed my stay at PDH, and what an

experience! Even though, before coming, I thought I had

prepared myself for what was in store, I am afraid I was

wrong. The suffering that I have witnessed here is tragic.

But I think what is more tragic is if people continue to

remain unaware. I would encourage everyone to come toTogo and experience their reality. When I first arrived I

had decided to keep a travel journal, after my first visit to

the hospital I was unable to write another word as words

were inadequate to convey my feelings. However, these sad

times were tempered with lovely times, and I will cherish

the memories I have of the wonderful people I met and

worked with at PDH. Their dedication and hard work is

beyond compare, and I applaud their efforts. I wish I could

have done more but I think the important lesson I learned

is everybody can do something; it is not acceptable to sit back and remain ignorant.

We at PDH are aware that many of you who would like to help our cause here in Togo simply

cannot, due to your own financial limits. There are, however, various alternatives to sending

money that can greatly benefit the humanitarian work of PDH.

    Spread the word

Our website features a Download Depot, which stores posters and desktop images. You can

download and/or print these items in order to promote our organization in relevant locations aroundyour town or city eg. cafs, churches and universities.

    Promote PDH

Help us to promote our cause and international profile by telling your friends and family about us. The

more people that know about PDH, the greater our support network - it's that simple. You may also

know somebody who is in a position that can greatly aid us by promoting our cause; a university

lecturer who could throw us up on a slide, a local priest who could speak to his congregation, or even

a travel agent. You could provide them with a copy of this newsletter to distribute.

    Like us on facebook!

Every acknowledgement of our work means a lot to the local volunteers, so consider liking us today!

    Pray

For those of you who are religious, you will know the value of prayer that money simply cannot buy.

Please remember us in your prayers, as everyone's spiritual faith is integral to the work that we carry

    out here.

    Fundraise

You can help PDH raise funds by conducting your own fundraising event. For example, auctioning off

old belongings on Ebay or hosting a dinner with a silent auction.

    10 Reflections on Donations

We often get questions about what people can send to us to help. Over the last couple of years moreand more things that we need such as school books, stationery and condoms are available here to

    buy.

Monetary donations are the most liquid, and thus most effective donation that we can receive. Weavoid postal costs, and often prices are cheaper here so we can gain the maximum value from yourmoney. Another positive outcome from doing it this way is that it helps the local economy here inTogo.

On the other hand if there is something in particular that you would like to send over (e.g. clothes, puzzles, board games) then feel free to do so; we know sometimes it is nice to send over productsthat you have chosen, so we will always be happy to accept any packages we receive. We are alsovery grateful for supplies that volunteers bring with them from their families and friends.

    11 How to Donate

Very often at PDH, we are forced to turn away people that we, quite simply, cannot

help. This is due to the extremely limited nature of our financial and materialresources as we are 100% dependant on donations and volunteers.

We believe that PDH is an excellent choice for those of you who are willing to donate moneyto a small non-government, non-profit aid organization. This is because our administrationcosts are very low and we guarantee that your donation - in its entirety - will provide reliefthat is desperately required by those in need.

To send a cheque direct to Lom (in either , $US or ):

    Payable to:

Centre Social PDHAddress: 02 B.P. 20832 Lom, Togo, West AfricaIf writing a cheque please be aware that it might take several weeks to arrivebecause the post can be quite slow.

For amounts less than50 we recommend either using cheques or contacting us toavoid unnecessary fees charged by the Togolese bank.
