Country institutional differences and multinational
advantage in banking We seek to answer the following questions: “Do country-level institutional differences affect
benefits of multinationality? If so, how?” Focusing on resource and knowledge transfers as the key
source of multinational advantage, we argue that the degree to which multinationals can benefit
from such transfers depends on the extent to which knowledge or other resources are applicable
across units. We further argue that the greater the institutional similarity across different countries
in which the MNE is present, the greater the applicability and transferability of resources across its
units. Hence, we claim that the greater the institutional similarity, the greater the firm performance
and, further, the greater the effect of multinationality on performance. We test these arguments in
a sample of 85 multinational banks using data from 2001-2002. We find that (1) institutional
similarity significantly improves MNE performance, (2) multinationality does not have an
independent effect on performance, and (3), contrary to our expectation, the positive effect of
institutional similarity actually decreases with increasing levels of multinationality. Our paper
contributes to the literature on multinationality, learning and resource transfer within MNEs, and
the contingent resource-based theory of the firm.

Knowledge Diffusion, Supplier's Technological Effort and Technology Transfer via Vertical Relationships This paper studies the effect of knowledge diffusion on the incentives for developed countries’
(DC) firms to undertake costly technology transfer to their developing countries’ (LDC) suppliers
whose cost of production varies inversely with their technological effort. When the incumbent
supplier’s cost of improving efficiency is high, upstream (or, respectively, downstream) diffusion
of knowledge to potential input (final output) producers encourages (discourages) technology
transfer as it increases upstream (downstream) competition. However, and in sharp contrast to
existing literature, when technological effort is less costly, upstream (downstream) knowledge
diffusion discourages (encourages) technology transfer by reducing (increasing) the incumbent
supplier’s technological effort.

The Drèze and Grossman-Hart criteria for production in incomplete markets: Voting foundations and compared political stability This paper studies corporate control in a general equilibrium model with incomplete markets. At
the market equilibrium, shareholders typically disagree on the way to evaluate production plans
outside the market span. Hence a collective decision mechanism is needed to resolve this conflict.
A mechanism proposed by Drèze (1974), resp. Grossman & Hart (1979), consists in allowing
(Lindahl-like) sidepayments between final, resp. initial, shareholders. Although it is likely to
exhibit desirable efficiency properties, this mechanism is difficult to implement. Another
mechanism (e.g., Drèze (1985) and De-Marzo (1993)) relies on majority voting by shareholders.
Since voting occurs in a multidimensional setup, super majority rules are needed to ensure
existence of equilibria. We give conditions under which sidepayment equilibria are voting
equilibria for the smallest rate of super majority ensuring existence. Thereby we are able to
compare the relative performances of the Drèze and Grossman-Hart criteria with respect to stability
in the voting mechanism. We show that the endogenization of portfolio holdings in the Drèze
criterion can either help or completely jeopardize the aggregation process, depending on the
shareholders’ expectations. This ambivalence is absent in the Grossman-Hart criteria.

«Should You Set Up Your Own Sales Force or Should You Outsource It ? Pitfalls in the Standard Analysis» Should you set up your own sales force or should you outsource it ? The standard analysis uses a
cost basis to answer this question. It assumes that the direct sales force is largely a fixed cost and
that the outsourced sales force is largely a cost that varies with sales. It then calculates the sales
quantity at which the costs associated with the direct sales force are equal to the costs associated
with the outsourced sales force. It suggests that for sales above that quantity, firms should have
their own direct sales force. This analysis has two serious problems. First, it is too simplistic; this
paper details other cost factors not considered in the standard analysis but that should be. Second,
the standard analysis is bases only on cost; it ignores differences in coverage efficiency and selling
effectiveness between the two sales forces, two important factors that are developed in this paper.

Disclosure and determinants studies: An extension using the divisive clustering method (DIV) Disclosure and determinants studies have been extensively carried out in past accounting research.
However, they have one major methodological drawback: the disclosure analysis in these studies is
often limited to the determination of the disclosure index, i.e. the sum of disclosed items, weighted
or unweighted. The disclosure profile (which reflects the structure of published information) is
generally not used in the research design. The objective of this paper is to introduce a divisive
(descendant) clustering method which splits the sample into homogeneous sub-groups
corresponding to disclosure patterns (or profiles), for clearer determination of the financial
characteristics of each group. This methodology is illustrated by a study of disclosure on
provisions by large French firms. The results show that the disclosure pattern is related to provision
intensity, size, leverage, profit and market expectation, but not to return and industry. This new
research method is a valuable complement to expand on disclosure and determinants studies,
moving from disclosure levels to disclosure patterns.

Using projective techniques to further understanding of the RAPM-PEU relationship evidence from the experience of marketing & sales managers In an increasingly uncertain context, budgeting faces at least two categories of concerns: how
should realistic objectives be set in a poorly predictable context? How should a fair year-end
evaluation be performed when uncertainty has affected the results and their controllability? Since
Hopwood’s (1972) paper, performance evaluative styles have provided a rich vein for empirical
behavioral studies in control, largely based on contingency approaches, and the Perceived
Environmental Uncertainty (PEU) has been specifically examined in many empirical studies.
However, two decades of literature on the RAPM-PEU relationship have produced results that are
at best inconclusive. In our view, there is a need for better understanding of the constructs
commonly used in RAPM research. To meet this need, we used a field-based study and projective
techniques to interview fourteen senior marketing and sales managers in a variety of industries.
The interviews were designed to capture the managers’ perceptions relating to RAPM, and to
uncertainty. Our results highlight an important practical and theoretical distinction between
actionable and non-actionable sources of PEU, which is based on a manager's ability to improve
the predictability of change, and/or to be able to react to changes in the environment with an
additional effort. When PEU is high and perceived as non-actionable, the paper examines what
kind of social and organizational adjustments take place that can avoid the potential negative
behavioral consequences of RAPM. The results emphasize that budgeting and performance
evaluation are a multiple-year game, where trust and knowledge of social rules build up over the
years, and learning takes place – a picture left out of traditional RAPM literature.

“How Internal Transaction Costs Drive Compensations Schemes” The literature on chief executive officers (CEOs) establishes that economic and sociological
rationales are both essential to understand the level and structure of CEOs’ compensation. Our
thesis is that internal “transaction costs” or frictions override strictly economic criteria to determine
pay levels and pay structures. We study mid-level jobs that have features strikingly similar to the
CEO. We show that pay checks and their underlying structure follow counterintuitive patterns, as if
the employer resorts to a third party (i.e. the customer base) to reduce employee discontent over
pay. We also find that firms reward managers as if they have considerable value added.

«Planning and Scheduling Transportation Vehicle fleet in a Congested Traffic Environment»). Transportation is a main component of supply chain competitiveness since it plays a major role in
the inbound, inter-facility, and outbound logistics. In this context, assigning and scheduling vehicle
routing is a crucial management problem. Despite numerous publications dealing with efficient
scheduling methods for vehicle routing, very few addressed the inherent stochastic nature of travel
times in this problem. In this paper, a vehicle routing problem with time windows and stochastic
travel times due to potential traffic congestion is considered. The approach developed introduces
mainly the traffic congestion component based on queueing theory. This is an innovative modeling
scheme to capture the stochastic behavior of travel times. A case study is used both to illustrate the
appropriateness of the approach as well as to show that time-independent solutions are often
unrealistic within a congested traffic environment which is often the case on the European road
networks..

Dynamic Modeling of Web Purchase Behavior
and E-Mailing Impact by Petri Net
Abstract:
In this article, the authors introduce Petri nets to model the dynamics of Web site visits and
purchase behaviors in the case of wish list systems. They describe Web site activities and their
transition with probability distributions and model the sequential impact of influential factors
through links that better explain Web purchase behavior dynamics. The basic model, which
analyzes site connections and purchases to explain visit and purchase behavior, performs better
than a classical negative binomial regression model. To demonstrate its flexibility, the authors
extend the wish list Petri net model to measure the impact of e-mailing intervals on visit frequency
and purchase.

Innovation, New Market and Governance Choices of Entry:
The Internet Brokerage Market Case
Abstract:
This paper investigates the case of market entry strategies following the introduction of a
disruptive innovation. Recognizing that market entry strategies have been envisioned in the
literature as a discrete phenomenon, we develop an empirical framework that portrays these
strategies as a capability building process. Three organizational modes are integrated into our
model: acquisition, alliance, and market transaction. We compare the first two with the third one
and we test our model in the setting of the online brokerage industry by using a sample of 897
moves made by 98 firms over a seven-year period (1994 to 2000). We built this dataset by
collecting secondary data. This research suggests that firms’ modes of entry can be differentiated
along factors specific to market timing as well the degree of specificity of targeted capabilities.
This paper shows that, surprisingly, market transactions are used to access specific capabilities. It
means that external sources can be used when firms face a make-or-buy decision in the aftermath
of technological change. Alliances appear to play a limited role while market transactions are
widely used. By suggesting that the entry into a new industry is not a discrete phenomenon, our
research should lead the path to additional research on this topic.

Internet Media Planning: An Optimization Model
Abstract:
Of the various media vehicles available for advertising, the Internet is the latest and the most
rapidly growing, emerging as the ideal medium to promote products and services in the global
market. In this article, the authors propose an Internet media planning model whose main objective
is to help advertisers determine the return they obtain from spending on Internet advertising. Using
available data such as Internet page view and advertising performance data, the model contributes
to attempts not only to optimize the Internet advertising schedule but also to fix the right price for
Internet advertisements on the basis of the characteristics of the exposure distribution of sites. The
authors test the model with data provided by KoreanClick, a Korean market research company that
specializes in Internet audience measurement. The optimal durations for the subject sites provide
some useful insights. The findings contrast with current Web media planning practices, and the
authors demonstrate the potential savings that could be achieved if their approach were applied.
