"No matter how far you have wandered hitherto, or how many famous gorges and valleysyou have seen, this one, the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, will seem as novel to you, asunearthly in color and grandeur and quantity of its architecture, as if you had found itafter death, on some other star."

– John Muir

Arizona's most famous gem, the Grand Canyon has capti-vated visitors ever since early 1880s pioneers discoveredits charm and realized this spectacular site was destined

for tourism rather than copper mining. In 1908, federal authorities concurred with this decision, naming

the Grand Canyon a National Monument. In February 1919, theyfurther elevated its status by designating an enlarged area as theGrand Canyon National Park. Spanning 3,931km2, the park hasgone from welcoming 44,173 visitors in 1919 to more than fivemillion per year today.

Thousands of adjectives can be used to describe the GrandCanyon, including "spectacular," "awe-inspiring" and "superb," but

most visitors are simply left speechless by thesight of this incredible natural wonder. It tookmore than 5 million years of wind and rainerosion to create Arizona's most visited attrac-tion. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, theGrand Canyon is truly irresistible.

Moreover, if the outdoors are your passion, there are countless opportunities to get outand do just about anything your heart desires.Page, a booming town situated next to LakePowell, north of the Grand Canyon's NorthRim, is a great spot for outdoor recreationenthusiasts. Watersports are the most popularactivities, but many golfing opportunities canalso be found here.

Here are a few suggestions of outdoor activities in the GrandCanyon area:

RaftingThrill-seekers will take great pleasure in rafting down the Grand

Canyon's Colorado River. The ride provides an exhilarating shot ofadrenaline and the knowledgeable guides will captivate you withfacts about the geology and history of the canyon. Rafters will notforget that this trip is often dubbed "the trip of a lifetime." One-dayfloat trips are available, as are longer voyages of up to 19 days onthe water. Prices vary according to the length of the trip but shouldhover around $200US per day. Trips are usually offered betweenApril and October, but some companies operate year-round. Morethan 15 guide companies are authorized to navigate the waters ofthe Colorado River. You should contact them at least a year aheadbefore making plans to raft the canyon.

HikingThe Grand Canyon is full of hiking opportunities appropriate for

beginners and experts alike. Although most hikes are strenuous dueto the steep pitch of the canyon, the Rim Trails are suitable forthose looking for an easy hike. The paved trails meander along theSouth Rim and are best for 15min to 1.5hr walks. These trails offergorgeous views of the inner canyon from up high.

The most popular hike on the South Rim is the Bright AngelTrail. With its trailhead west of the Bright Angel Lodge, this routewinds down to the Phantom Ranch and offers spectacular views ofthe canyon. Those who are not planning to stay the night at theranch can still enjoy the trail and its several stops along the way. Theshortest hike covers 4.8km and leads to the 1 ½ Mile Resthouse, requiring 2 to 4hrs to complete; the longer 10km hike takes 4 to6hrs round-trip. Water is available at these stops during the sum-mer.

Experienced hikers who are not daunted by an unmaintainedtrail can attempt the Hermit Trail. The trailhead starts 152m westof Hermits Rest. Hiking boots are required for this trip, which dipsdeep into the canyon. Two options are available: the 7.2km routestops at Santa Maria Spring and takes 5 to 8hrs to complete, while the 10.5km hike to the Dripping Springs takes between 6and 9hrs. Hikers should bring their own drinking water or be pre-pared to treat the water they find along the way.

Note that pets on leashes are permitted on the South Rim but noton the North Rim trails.

GolfThe Elephant Rocks Golf Course is located a mere 4.8km west

of Williams. Set amidst the pine trees, the course offers 18 holesthat will challenge the avid golfer. There is also a driving range anda practice green. To tee off at another superb course, check out theLake Powell National Golf Course. Golf Digest gives it a four-star rating.

With a thousand-year-old history, Brussels takes its timein revealing its many charms to the uninitiated visitor. And there is no better introduction to this vibrant cap-

ital of Belgium than to spend a leisurely afternoon at one of themany cafés found around its impressive Grand Place. Althoughconsidered to be mainly a center of commerce, Brussels has beenknown to seduce many of its visitors who have chosen to spend evena brief sojourn in the city.

Seated before a tall refreshing glass of Belgian lager or dark ale, crisp golden French fries and a plate of fresh, glistening mussels, you quickly forget everyday cares as your eyes feast on these delec-table offerings, made even more so laid out on a sunlit tablecloth. The effect is quite enchanting and equally appetizing.

After a couple glasses of Belgium's world-famous beer, it's easyto believe that one can actually see the phantom of a pensive VictorHugo, leaning his elbows on the window sill of the residence inwhich he lived during its exile. And hold it a minute! Could that bethe poets Verlaine and Rimbaud, still in the heat of one of their leg-endary squabbles? And those dancing shadows; aren't they the frilly

dresses of the beautiful ladies who attend-ed the middle-age tournaments, grandiosefestivals and bloody happenings that tookplace in this very square? Ah, if only theseold cobblestones could speak!

The immense rectangle that is La GrandPlace, measuring some 110 metres by 69metres, is covered in summer with an intri-cate display of 75,000 begonias that forma huge, colourful outdoor carpet. Inthe12th century, it was nothing more than adrained marsh. Today, it is the very heart ofthe old city and the pride of the Brussels'inhabitants. Dominated by the Town Hall, which was built in the 15th century, LaGrand Place also features buildings in theGothic style, such as the imposing GuildHalls built after the bombardment of thecity in 1695 and restored in the 19th cen-tury, as well as many statuettes, includingthose of Saint-Michel.

During the day, La Grand Place teemswith locals and tourists who visit, shop, browse or stroll along its terraces. Manyare there for the simple pleasure of watch-ing the comings and goings of the affablecrowds. In the evenings, spectacular soundand light shows or illuminations of the sur-rounding historic buildings transform LaGrand Place into a magical place. It is saidthat Cocteau once called this imposingTown Square "the liveliest theatre in theworld."

Located a few steps from the square, thePlace de Brouckère is a prestigious hotelthat offers visitors a unique and unforget-table stay. The nearby Hôtel Métropole isalso an excellent choice. A historical listedmonument, the décor of this hundred-year-old hotel is a lively mix of the FrenchRenaissance, Romanesque and the early20th-century styles. Over the decades, celebrities as diverse as Einstein, JodyFoster, Luc Plamondon and General deGaulle have stayed at the Métropole.

Three CapitalsBecause of its geographical position,

Belgium was always a meeting-place ofdiverse cultures and people. This has great-ly contributed to its historical, cultural andartistic richness. This relatively small coun-try is considered to be the very nerve centreof Europe, thanks to the many EuropeanUnion institutions that sit there. The city ofBrussels is at the same time, the capital ofthe European Union, the capital ofFlanders and of course, the capital ofBelgium.

In this multicultural and polyglot city, home to more than one mil-lion inhabitants, one meets people from everywhere in the world, inparticular civil servants of the 25 European Union countries. However, for the large majority of the inhabitants of Brussels,French remains the everyday language of use. Although a French-speaking metropolis, many people also speak English as in mostother European cities.

For the tourist who really wants to discover and appreciateBrussels, nothing is worth more than a leisurely stroll through itsneighbourhoods, taking the time to meet and get to know theBelgians. This is also an occasion to admire its architectural treas-ures, the heritage of the Belgian dynasty. These include the RoyalPalace and Park, the Park of the Fiftieth Anniversary; and the con-servatories or other buildings that preserve important stages in thedevelopment of the Art Nouveau movement and its leading mem-ber, Victor Horta.

Your stroll will also allow you to trace the footsteps and visit theplaces habituated by such luminaries asSimenon, Jacques Brel, Magritte andDelvaux. But there will also be specialmoments during your stroll to make newfriendships in the markets, shops and smallrestaurants; to taste the myriad of local beers;to gorge yourself on chocolate; and to yield tothe temptation of snacking on fries and themussels without forgetting the famed gastron-omy of Brussels.

A Bit of HumourIt is impossible to speak about Brussels,

without mentioning the warm hospitality andoften-naughty repartee of her inhabitants. The Belgians like to laugh and, it should alsobe noted that they like to bend their elbows aswell. "Here, one lives under the influence ofbeer," notes one guide. "Everything changes, depending on what one drinks."

Perhaps this is the explanation of the popularity of the MannekenPis, a legendary figure that has been showered with honours anddistinctions. Many legends exist in connection with this symbol of thespirit of independence of the inhabitants of Brussels, its past rebels,mischief-makers and assorted rogues. The story goes that, as earlyas the Middle Ages, there existed a statue bearing the same name.In any event, it is impossible to resist the strong impulse to join theflood of tourists who pay homage to this small bronze fellow, whohas been peeing for centuries under the amazed gaze of thetourists. The Manneken Pis fountain is located not far from theGrand Place.

After having paid homage to the statue, why not go on to admirehis imposing wardrobe? Oh yes! Over 750 different outfits, one ofwhich one which transforms him into Elvis, are on display in theMaison du Roy de la Grand Place!

But the Manneken Pis is not alone in having a museum. Thereare some 75 other interesting museums in Brussels including theMusée des instruments de Musique (www.mim.fgov.be), displayingmusical instruments; the Centre belge de la bande dessinée(www.brusselsbdtour.com), exploring the history of the Belgiancomic strip; and the Horta Museum, located in the original privatehome of this renown architect. His style upset the middle-class of hisday, but everyone now admires his sumptuous buildings.

To discover this city and to appreciate all its charms, the Guide &Plan du tout Bruxelles is highly recommended. It offers an overviewof Brussels' markets, shops, museums and monuments as well assuggestions for guided tours. Under the topic Voir et Dire Bruxelles, six knowledgeable associations have compiled daily itinerariesbased on different themes. These fascinating self-led tours enablevisitors to explore aspects of Brussels that interest them, such as thecity's politics, its celebrities, its churches, its art, its past, its comic strips, its beer orits architecture.

Brussels is discoveredslowly, but before you knowit you will become captivat-ed by its charms! To reallyappreciate the city, putyourself in its shoes andlose yourself in its streets. The magic unfolds veryquickly, and as you bidadieu, you will already bedreaming of your returnvisit!

IndeUne histoire riche et fascinante

IndiaA Rich and Colourful History

Indian history dates back to 3000 BC. Excavations in Punjab andGujarat reveal that the Indus Valley civilisation was a highlydeveloped urban civilisation.

In fact the two cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro, situated ontwo sides of the river Ravi, are known to have been built on a sim-ilar plan. But that only meant a new wave of urbanisation was tak-ing place along the Ganges around 1500 BC.

This has been recorded in the Rig Veda – the earliest known lit-erary source composed in this period thatsheds light on India's past.

The Great DynastiesBy 6th century BC, the Magadh rulers

dominated the Northern plains. It was alsothe time when new thinking emerged in theform of Buddhism and Jainism to challengeHindu orthodoxy. The Magadh rule was fol-lowed by the rule of Chandragupta Maurya(322-298 B.C.), one of India's greatestemperors.

The Mauryan reign peaked under thereign of Ashoka the Great who extended hisempire from the Kashmir and Peshawar in theNorth to Mysore in the South and Orissa inthe East.

Not only was Ashoka a great ruler, hewas one of the most successful propagatorsof Buddhism in the country. After Ashoka'sdeath in 232 B.C. the empire began to dis-integrate and the country was repeatedlyraided and plundered by foreign invaders, leaving India disunited and weak for thenext 400 years.

Stability returned with the reign ofChandra Gupta I (380-412 A.D.). His ruleis considered the golden period in Indianhistory when art and culture flourished andthe country prospered.

Unlike the North of India, foreign inva-sions had little impact on life in South Indiawhich also saw the rise and decline of

many empires. These included the Cholaswhose rule extended to Sri Lanka andSouth East Asia, the Pandyas, the Cheras, the Pallavas and the Chalukyas.

Under the various rulers, arts and craftin the South also saw the emergence ofvarious styles of architecture and some ofthe grandest architectural accomplishmentsin the South - the most famous being theexquisitely crafted Chola bronzes. Thesewere followed by the Hoysala and theVijaynagar empires - among the greatestHindu empires.

death. Sher Shah is, however, rememberedas the one to build the Grand Trunk roadspanning from Peshawar to Howrah.Humayun's reign was followed up by hisson Akbar who actually consolidated powerand extended the empire across NorthIndia and parts of South India.

One of India's wisest rulers and mostable administrators, Akbar's reign is con-sidered to be one of the best the countryhas known. Akbar was succeeded byJahangir, followed by his son Shah Jahan -best known as the builder of the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid. ShahJahan's reign was followed by Aurangzeb's.The death of Aurangzeb saw the decline ofthe Mughal rule in India.

British Rule Over the centuries India had always

been attractive to traders, and one of thefirst Europeans to come to India was thePortuguese trader Vasco da Gama wholanded at Calicut, sailing via the Cape ofGood Hope in 1498. The Portugueseestablished their colony in Goa in the 16thCentury but they did not expand it thoughtheir rule continued till 1961. Vasco daGama was followed by the French, theDutch and the English, all of whom werelured by the commercial interests that Indiaoffered. By the last quarter of the 18th cen-tury the English established themselves asthe dominant power in India and they setabout making revolutionary changes in thesocial, political and the economic life of thecountry.

Towards Independence The disintegration of the Mughal empire, fighting among the

Maratha rulers and inability of the various rulers across the countryto unite against a common enemy saw the British consolidate theirposition in the country. However, the 19th century saw a revival ofnational pride and social reform and the Indians began to tire ofthe suppressive British rule.

Things reached a flash point in the second half of the 19th cen-tury when the first war of independence in 1857 broke out inMeerut. It was sparked off by the introduction of a new rifle and car-tridge by the British in the Army. The cartridges which soldiers hadto bite off, allegedly contained pork and beef tallow, which offend-

ed the religious senti-ments of both Hindusand Muslims.

The soldiers rebelled, reached Delhi and pro-claimed BahadurshahZafar the sovereign rulerof India. They were even-tually overpowered by theBritish.

But there was no look-ing back for the Indianswho wanted social reformand freedom. The IndianNational Congress was setup and educated Indiansstarted formulating strate-gies to assert theirbirthright to independ-ence.

Gandhi’s ArrivalThe anti-British sentiment became a mass movement with the

arrival of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who devised a uniquestrategy for India's freedomstruggle based on non-vio-lence and civil disobedience. He conceived and led thenon-cooperation movementin 1922, the Salt Satyagrahain 1930 and the Quit IndiaMovement in 1942. All ofwhich pushed the British intoagreeing to transfer power onAugust 15, 1947, the day thatis now celebrated as India'sIndependence Day.

Today, India is the world'slargest democracy with a fed-eral form of government.
