AP1000 Advanced Passive Plant

 Modular and Simplified

 Passive safety systems (gravity, natural

circulation, condensation)

- Requires no operator action for 72 hours

after an incident

- Maintains core and containment cooling

without ac power

- Licensed in the United States

Power generation systems in AP1000 are based on

traditional PWR technology:

– Same system arrangements and functions

– Same basic components: fuel, reactor vessel, steam generator, turbine generator, etc.

 Safety systems are simplified:

– Tanks & pipes instead of pumps and valves

– Validated by extensive scale tests and rigorous NRC review

AP1000 Is Proven, Simplified Technology

No technology risk

Fundamental principles of operation: gravity,

natural circulation, condensation

AP1000 Design Certification Schedule

Mar 28, 2002 Applied for Final Design Approval (FDA)

Sept 13, 2004 Final Design Approval issued

Dec 30, 2005 Design Certification (DC) approved

AP1000 is licensed in the

U.S.

Proven AP1000 Reactor Coolant System

 Proven Reactor Design

– W XL Core Designs

– Doel 4; Tihange 3; South Texas

 ∆∆∆∆125 Steam Generators

– Similar to large W/CE SG in operation

– System 80; ANO RSG

 Reactor Coolant Pump

– Canned motor pumps

– Naval reactors; AP600; early commercial

reactors

 Simplified Main Loop

– Same as AP600

– Reduced welds / supports

 Pressurizer

– 50% larger than operating units

Westinghouse Activities

with U.S. Power Companies

 Most significant interest currently centered

in the Southeastern United States:

– Duke - has announced plans and selected AP1000 technology for their COL application

– Progress - has announced plans and selected AP1000 for a COL application at the Harris site

– SCANA - has announced plans and has met with USNRC to discuss COL activities

– Southern - has announced plans to pursue ESP (and perhaps COL) for Vogtle site

– TVA - Bellefonte site has been selected for the NuStart AP1000 COL application

 Westinghouse has signed an Agreement

with Duke and has had varying degrees of

interaction with the others

Interest also being expressed by other US

power companies 11

Ansaldo / Westinghouse AP1000Co-operation

Ansaldo has participated since 1989 in

development of the passive plant technology

embodied in the AP1000 design

Ansaldo and Westinghouse are the industrial

partners in a co-operative program with

European utilities to apply the technology in

Europe (European Passive Program)

12

AP1000 - European Involvement

Involved in European Passive Plant (EPP) Program for over 10 years

AP1000 has been assessed against EUR Rev. C and shows good level of compliance

Current and future EPP programs are addressing required

changes to the AP1000 for European application and

licensing

The European activities

provide confidence that

the AP1000 can be

licensed in Europe 13
